Sharing Itunes but not contacts

I recently upgraded to an Iphone. My wife already had one. When setting up my phone I signed into our itunes account in order to get all of the music and other things we already had. The problem is with our contacts. Once I set up my phone, I got all of her contacts and she got all of mine. Is there anyway to fix this where we can keep our own contacts but not share all of them? Also, sometimes she gets texts sent to me on her phone. I think there is something in the settings that could fix these issues but don't know what that might be.
I tried to turn off icloud-contacts in my settings but that turned all of my contacts back to phone numbers with no names attached. I'm new to iphone and quickly looked but can't find an answer to this in the forums.
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Matt

You should use separate Apple ID's for iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime. These services are separate from iTunes.
Create a new Apple ID > https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/ -- Note: You need a verified email address
On one of the devices go:
Settings > iCloud > (Scroll Down) Delete Account > Sign in with the new Apple ID -- Note: This only affects the device
Settings > Messages > Send and Received > Apple ID > Sign Out > Sign in with the new Apple ID
Settings > FaceTime > Apple ID > Sign Out > Sign in with the new Apple ID
This will separate your iCloud content (i.e. Contacts, Notes, Reminders etc.), Messages and FaceTime.
You both can continue to use the same Apple ID for iTunes and share purchased Apps, Music and Movies

  • How do I share itunes, but not our contacts with two iphones

My son just got a new iphone and we want to share our itunes, but not our contacts. When I set up his phone I put it on my account and now all of my contacts are on his phone! How do I fix it and share our itunes account? Help please!

    1. You would have to delete your account on his device in "Settings > iCloud" (where he should use his own account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars etc.).
    2. In order to use the same account for iTunes and App Store purchases, just set up the same account in "Settings > iTunes & App Stores".
By the way, if you set up his device by using your Apple ID, please check also the settings for iMessage (Settings > Messages > Send & Receive) and FaceTime (Settings > FaceTime), because I guess that you acceidentally used your Appl ID also for the set up of this services.

Were you definitely connected to the internet at the time? If you don't have iOS 5 on your iPhone then the only way to update it would be via iTunes, once updated to the latest version of iOS you'll be able to update your iPhone without connecting to iTunes "over-the-air".
Before updating however it goes without saying to Backup your iPhone, this should happen by default upon connecting your iPhone to iTunes.

  • My Ipod touch is recognized by itunes, but not by my computer!

My hard drive recently crashed, and I had to get a new one. I lost all my songs, so I am trying to transfer them to my new harddrive, but windows only recoginzes my ipod touch as a camera, so I can't get to my songs. Help?

There is no disk mode like it used to be with the older ipod models. If you bought your music in iTunes, make sure autosync is disabled, connect to your computer and right click on your ipod in the device list in iTunes.
Choose "transfer purchases" to copy all media and apps bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
Also back up manually, to be able to restore your ipod after the first sync, which will erase your device due to the new iTunes library created on your HD.
Make sure to have at least one contact and event listed on your computer, to get the merge prompt while syncing contacts and calendars.
    More about backups here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
There is 3rd party software out there to copy media you did not buy in iTunes, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • ITunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet...???

    Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
    Checked my internet connection
    Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
    start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
    Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
    Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
    Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file  start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added  "#     127.0.0.1     gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.

im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.

  • ITunes purchased song plays in iTunes but not on iPod

I have purchased several songs from the music store. One of the songs will play in iTunes but not on my iPod. I've removed the song several times from the iPod and resynced with iTunes, but the song still cuts out in the middle of the song. What should I do?

If it's just a problem with that song, I would contact the customer service who may authorize another download.

  • ITunes could not contact the iPod software update server

I am trying to update the ipod software to version 3.1.3 but using my macbook (10.5.8) I cannot reach the update server and a I get the following error - "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server". I am connected to the internet, I can access the iTunes store no problem.
Using my windows XP laptop I can access the update server and I am using the same network ID and the same proxy settings.
    Any ideas?

Forget the wireless modem part of the question. I tried plugging directly into my pc and still have the same problem...very frustrating!

  • "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" Help?

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This  set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
    # Open Internet Options from control panel.
    # Click the Connections tab.
    # Click the LAN Settings button.
    # Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?

  • 'itunes could not contact the ipod software...' On Mac!

    Hi there!
When I try to restore my new 5th Gen 30G iPod using iTunes, I get an error message saying 'itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected ot the Internet'. But I can use the iTunes Store, and various other on-line applications.
There is an article on the Apple site about this problem for Windows, but there's no Mac-based solution. I'm having to restore my iPod thanks to everyone's favourite error message, (-48). Any help much appreciated!

I am having the same problem on my mac - is there anyone out there than can help us on this issue?

  • Itunes could not contact iPod update server ...not connected to internet

Please help. I have: Win XP Pro, SP2; itunes 7.0.1.8. iPod ver. 1.1 5G Video iPod. Am getting error: "itunes could not contact the iPod update server because you are not connected to the Internet."
But I am connected to the internet, and can download podcasts and access itunes store. But I cannot download ipod ver. 1.2, and thus I assume this is the reason that I am getting incomplete syncs on video podcasts.
I have followed the Apple site's recommendation to ensure the LAN settings button is set to "Automatically Detect Settings" but I still get the error.
I have uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it again; still getting error. I have disabled my firewall; still no luck.
I welcome any help, please!! Thanks.

I have been trying for 3 hours to make this work -- I've checked the box and tried; unchecked the box; rechecked, rebooted and tried ... you get the picture.
    hmmmm.
by any chance, are you using a proxy? in the context of Store connections, i've seen a problem with a proxy cause a connection issue, even though the network diagnostics looked perfectly clean.
working on that theory, if you are using a proxy perhaps try the techniques from this document:
iTunes for Windows can't access the Internet if proxy settings are incorrect
or perhaps just try to see if the connection to the update server goes through if you if you try this without the proxy.
