Sharing itunes library across accounts on the same IMac

How do you share your ITunes library with other accounts on the same IMac? There's clear advice how to share it with other networked computers, but how do you do it across accounts on the same IMac?

You can copy the desired library to the shared folder.
You then need to go to each iTunes app. in the various users and change the iTunes music folder location.

  • Sharing iTunes library across accounts on same computer

    Hi
I have just bought my first Mac. I have set up an account for me and an account for my wife but I'm wondering if it is possible for us to share the same iTunes library rather than having a lot of duplicate music. Can this be done?
    Thanks in advance
    Graeme

Oh yes, welcome to Apple, and the Apple forums,
I hope you enjoy your new iMac,
Well, the bad news is I don't think that will work, when I tried it one my computer, one User couldnt access the other's Music folder. However, I do think you could make your iTunes Music Folder be a folder in the Public folder for your account, which would allow anyone on your computer, or on your network, to use it.
To change the location of your music folder to a folder in your Public folder, follow these steps:
-Go to your Music folder (Users-Username-Music)
    -Copy the folder called "iTunes"
-Go to that User's Public folder (User-Username-Public)
-Paste your iTunes folder here (depending on the size of the folder, this may take a while)
-In iTunes, go to: iTunes-Preferences-Advanced, and look at the "iTunes Music Folder Location"
-Click the word "Change..." next to it, and choose the new folder (the one you made in the Public folder)( you only have to do this on the account that alread has the music if you want to delete the orignal music folder to save space otherwise leave it as the one in the Music folder for this account)
-Do this for the other account on your Computer, by selecting the same folder in the first user's Public Folder as the new Music Folder.
-Select "Consolidate Library..." from the Advanced menu (not the Advanced menu n Preferences, the one on the bear at the top of the Monitor), this will copy the music from the folder into that iTunes Library.
I sure hope no one else posted an answer while I wrote this, hope it helps.
Edit: I will test this as well.

  • Transfering iTunes library between accounts in the same computer??

    Hi everyone
I use my MacBook both at home and in my office. I work in a small company, so everyone is very relaxed about security. I only have one account, but recently, while at the office I discovered someone browsing at some of my kids' pictures.
To avoid this,I decided to set up a "office" account. Everything went fine until I opened iTunes and found that I don't have any songs (they must have missed the memo about the new account!)
Is there an easy way to transfer those songs to my new account? I stress, this is the same computer we're talking about!!!
    Thanks

Do you mean they were viewing the pix on your computer? iTunes does not have pix for anyone to view. (This is the iTunes forum)

You created a new account on the computer?
If you are talking about the computer, open the first accounts - > System prefs - Sharing.
    Under Services, turn OFF everything.
    Under FireWall, turn it ON.

  • How do you share one Itunes library between accounts in the same computer?

I have a new I-mac and I set up my Itunes library on the main account in the I-tunes folder, as a default. I set up a second account for my wife - how can I share the music in the main library without having to transfer it to a separate folder under her username?

  • Sharing iTunes library across four User IDs on iMac desktop

I set up three new user names on my Mac desktop to use separate parental controls for my three daughters.  Although I shared my iTunes library, only a portion of my 1,300  songs appear in their itunes libraries. (Different number for each of my three daughters, and different songs!)  Why might this be and how can I ensure that all of the songs in my library appear in theirs?
    Thanks

  • How do I share files across accounts on the same iMac?

I used Migration Assistant to bring documents from a Windows laptop over to my new iMac.  I setup several accounts already on the iMac.  I want to be able to view the migrated documents across all of the accounts on my iMac.  How do I do that?

In FINDER, copy the migrated documents you want to share into the Dropbox, in the second column over.
    Hope this helps

  • Sharing itunes library  between two accounts on the same imac

We just got a 27" imac and my wife and I have our own log on accounts. We share our itunes library. I have moved our itunes library to the shared folder so both of us can see its contents and pointed itunes on both user accounts to that shared folder. But, if she or I purchase an app or music it doesn't go into that shared folder. So I have to copy and paste it into the shared folder. Am I missing something there should be an easier way? I just want us to share the music and iphone apps we purchase.
We are using the same itunes account on the same imac, we just have different user accounts on the imac. Thanks

  • Sharing iTunes library across computers

Step 5 of the Help file says "select 'Automatically import new purchases from [Computer Name].'" Where is that selection found?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd be happy to elaborate. In iTunes Help, enter "home sharing" as the search term, and select the top topic, "Sharing your iTunes library across computers." The five items are under the heading, "To import items from other libraries using Home Sharing."
I have gone over the steps again and found my problem. I was signed onto the Store under different names (different Mobile Me email address, both mine) on the two computers. I switched to the same name, then turned Home Sharing off and then on on both computers. When each opened the other's library, the other library window has a Settings button in the lower right hand window. That button produces a pane with setting for automatic transfer.
The Help file could be improved. Or iTunes could recognize multiple email addresses for one Mobile Me account. Thanks again.

  • Move an iTunes library between users on the same mac

How do I move an iTunes library between users on the same mac?
I accidentally created a secondary user on my mac some time ago when using the migration tool and am now going back and transferring all my files from the secondary to the admin user profile.
I wanted to know which itunes files/folders need to be copied over.
Is the process as simple as replacing the itunes folder on admin with the copied itunes folder from my secondary profile or do I need to delete the admin folder first and then copy the old folder over or do I delete the contents of the folder and replace with the copied contents?
I am using shared folders to move between users, but want to make sure that I am picking the right files to transfer.
    Thanks in advance.

Assuming you have left iTunes to default settings so everything is still in the iTunes folder the way iTunes likes it to be, copy the whole of the iTunes folder to the new location.  If it is in the default directory (Home > Music) for iTunes the application will automatically use it there for the new account.  If you put it elsewhere you will have to start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key to direct it to the new location.
It is just possible you will have to change permissions.  If you encounter those issues read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914

  • Is there a way I can move movies from one itunes library to another on the same computer?

Is there a way I can move movies from one itunes library to another on the same computer?

Locate them in the Windows Explorer, move or copy those files as you would any other, and drag them into the open iTunes window when the second library is loaded. If you're using two iTunes libraries on one user account, you only need to locate the files; otherwise, they need to be put in a shared area.

  • Can I move/copy songs from one itunes account to another itunes account on the same iMac?

Can I move/copy songs from one itunes account to another itunes account on the same iMac?

You move the song files to /Users/Shared/ and then into iTunes from the other Mac OS X user account.
If you want to change the iTunes Store account associated with them, you need to redownload them from that account.

  • The same itunes Library and playlists on the same computer with two systems

I want to have the same itunes library and playlists on the same computer with the two different Os 10.3.9 and 10.4.9 each one on the different disk. without copy this in the itunes folder (because my library its 30Gb)
I have the same user name on the Os. I use the same version of itunes in both systems
I use my ipod to play the library but its not the best solution (i lost my library in ipod twice because I confused from what os was synchronized)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Amalgamate the two iTunes libraries. Then load iTunes and hold down the Option/Alt ⌥ key and then choose "Choose Library" and then point both copies of iTunes to use the combined iTunes library.

  • Can I connect two iPhones to two different iTunes account on the same iMac?

I have one (1) iMac and two (2) iPhones and two (2) iPads...
I have set up two (2) login accounts on the same iMac... one for myself and another for my wife.
Likewise I have setup iTunes account for myself and for my wife in both the logins... the problem occurs when I try and sync my wife's iPhone to her version of the iTunes...
By the way I have authorised the same iMac with both the iTunes account so that me and my wife can have a individual setups and not mess with each others apps / music.
    Any help would be welcome.
    Thanks

Each iTunes account is linked to a different Apple ID.  Setup one iPhone with the Apple ID for your wife and the other with the Apple ID for yourself.  Then sync the iPhones to their respective login/iTunes accounts on the Mac.

  • Managing multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac

May be a very simple question to answer, but can I manage multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac?
I ask as whilst I'm totally Mac'd, my partner who has her own Apple account has a Winows laptop and experiences problems updating iOS software on her iPhone 4S and iPad 3 Gen via the laptop. I'm thinking the problems may be overcome if we manage her iOS devices through my iMac.

Thanks dwb .... I thought there'd be a catch .... not to keen on all that media and apps on my iMac!
The specific problem is that whenever she updates to the latsest version of iOS using the latest iTunes for Windows on her PC laptop she seems to lose something in the process. One time she lost all her texts and the other day when updating to 5.1.1 she lost all her reminders. Not the end of the world but frustrating and shouldn't really happen and doesn't happen to me using the iMac and OSX.
