Sharing iTunes library and having different iCloud ID ?

My wife and I use the same iTunes account and share libraries (music, apps and others).
Now, on her iPad and iPhone, almost daily she is prompted for entering an iCloud password in order to backup. I guess this makes sense in this situation to have separate backups in iCloud, but share the iTunes and App store ID and password.
Now I'm starting to wonder which is best : either backup on a Mac then no longer have to bother with this ?  Or keep using iCloud (then how could we know if she ever had an iCloud account - and can this be different than iTunes and App Store) ?  - If so how to recover ?
Or is there another way to go ?
Last thing we want is to either end up with a merged and confused iCloud backups, or that she loose all access to iTunes purchases by logging her iPad to a different ID and password for iCloud...
Thanks,
Rob

Hi lanstrad,
If your wife's iPad and iPhone are asking for a sign on to iCloud repeatedly, have her Delete the iCloud account on the device and sign back in again to see if that resolves that problem: Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom of the screen, tap on Delete account, enter iCloud password, follow the remaining prompts to delete the account (this will not affect the iCloud content - it will come back when iCloud is signed back on). Then sign back into the account.
You can use separate IDs for iCloud and for iTunes. This allows you to do exactly what you are doing - keeping your purchases shared between the two of you while keeping your Contacts, Messages, Notes, etc. separate. Here is a support article on using two IDs:

  • Sharing Itunes library and backup on external drive

Would appreciate if anyone can offer help on their experiences of external / NAS drives. I've been looking for the best solution to move my entire Itunes library to an external drive that I can put on the network so can have access from PC's, Mac and Iphone. Just recently moved to new MBP but still have PC's in home.
Have looked at varying solutions and think I've got it narrowed down to going for either QNAP  TS212 NAS or dedicated Iomega Network hard drive but seem to come over a lot of conflicting reports of these items not working well with MAC, particularily some comments on the use of Iomega which is the more cost effective solution.
A little background was planning on 2TB drives and partioning for Itunes library, Time Machine backups and PC backups. Have the S/W on MAC to read/write NTFS.
From my research the dedicated NAS would be appear to be the best answer but a lot more expensive than a network drive.
Can anyone advise of a network drive that they have experienced working well for this type of configuration?
Also is there any issues with syncing Iphone to an external networked library?
    Any Advice Appreciated
    Thanks

    Trev,
changing iTunes media folder location via preferences > advanced tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, not where the current content is.
also, with your library now on the NAS, you must make sure the NAS is mounted on your desktop before launching iTunes.
... still showed an issue with the file locations and the exclamation marks.
you may have done something wrong initially (during re-locating your library to the NAS) because the exclamation marks usually appear when media files were moved using the finder and iTunes lost track of their location.
you might be able to use this script:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

  • Iphone and ipod losing sync with shared itunes library - home sharing not working

I hope this can help some people who have had problems with syncing their IOS devices to their shared itunes library.
Having had a lot of trouble with syncing and sharing my itunes libraries from two PC's to an iphone 4 and 4S via "itunes home sharing", I decided to try and find a solution using typical search engine search phrases. I found a number of issues similar to mine that pointed toward local network protocols such as media serving, and the ability or lack of ability to use these protocols by DSL routers.
My solution was simple, change the DSL router. My ISP supplied DSL router was the problem, not being able to identify that the PC's hosting my itunes libraries become media servers when itunes home sharing is switched on. My DSL box is a Tesco Broadband branded/firmware Thomson TG580. As a test I tried out a box from my previous supplier, an O2 branded/firmware Thomson/Technicolor TG582n. Although this wont work with my ISP connection, it will work as a wirless/wired router. As soon as I connected this all together, it worked first time without any hassle. I was mirroring my shared HD videos via the itunes home shared library to my 4S perfectly.
I know this may not help most people, but if you have the chance to test another wireless router, give it a go. Having had a good look, I can't find an Apple compatibility list. Maybe this is something they could do, or maybe someone can point out a site that may have this info?
I am by no means an Apple Fanboy, but I have to say that a lot of the complaints about the home sharing between itunes, ipods, iphones, Apple TV etc. may simply be the router and not itunes or the IOS devices.
My setup is PC's running the latest itunes with Win 7 32 & 64 bit and my IOS devices on 6, I also tested an iphone 4 on IOS 5 that worked perfectly. My 4S is now a perfect HDMI media player/streamer for my itunes music and videos encoded to H.264 using Handbrake.

Assuimg you have the latest ATV firmware, at the bottom of the general settings menu on your apple TV there is an option to reset your apple TV. Try that and then reset it up back on your network.
Before testing ensure the correct time/date/nearest City is setup in the ATV settings and re-enter your apple ID/password and turn on home sharing. You can connect to your network either via wifi or cable and see if it then works.
Resetting the ATV and then checking and re-entering all my settings worked for me.
I guess if not, then the next step is to disable any firewall on your PC and see if that works after the PC is rebooted.
    Hope this helps.

  • Backing up a shared itunes library

Hi, I want to back up my shared itunes library and most importantly my purchased music onto an external hard drive. When I use backup it can't find the purchased music in the shared file (I have two users on one mac sharing the itunes library). What is the best way of getting around this. I have noted the help pages on support but they are mainly for burning to a CD/DVD and don't discuss the issue of sharing!
    Many thanks

Is there a way to make a smart "playlist" of specific books in my iTunes library, and copy ONLY THOSE books to an iOS device? I own an iPad and an iPhone but I want different books on each different device. When I've tried this, the iOS devices don't seem to respond.

There is no playlist for iBooks, butther eis nothing to preent you from choosing to download specific titles from itunes, or syncing just specific titles to an individual device.

  • I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?

I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?  It doesn't look like I created any more space by doing this, AND I totally lost all my iTunes playlists.  I'm not sure if because I added old library materials manually if this messed up my playlists, or if the new location is just not reading my moved library.  In any case, I followed step by step instructions and found a few holes and thought I'd just "figure it out" but I guess I'm not as smart as I thought since I'm still scratching my head many hours later.
    Thanks for any support ;-)

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • If I erased a season of a TV show from both iTunes library and iCloud, what can I do to restore it or at least have it back in my purchased list?

Recently I bought three seasons of a TV show, but when I was going to download the second one I noticed that I could have it with 1080p, so I changed my settings so all other downloads would be in 1080p. The second and the third season where downloaded that way, but since I didn't noticed this when I was downloading the first season; it was downloaded in 720p. I thought that if I erased the first season I could download it again but in 1080p, so I deleted the whole season from my iTunes library, but also from iCloud when it asked if I wanted so.
Until that moment I thought I was doing it the right way, but when I went to iTunes Store to download it, there was no option to do so, even though that in the season icon it said that it was purchased. After that I went to my purchased list and it wasn't there.
Fortunetely, I always make a backup for my Mac in an external drive, so what I did was copying the file of the season that was in my backup into the "Add Automatically to iTunes" folder. The season is back in my iTunes library, but not in my purchased list.
The problem is that I can't download it to my iPod from iCloud. I could sync my iPod from iTunes, but most of the time I don't have my Mac with me. I would like to have the season back as if it was purchased normally, and I would like to know if there's a way that I could have it in 1080p.
If anyone could help me to do so, or tell what I did wrong; I will be very grateful.

    This may help

As far as the TV series being in 1080p then that is upto the content provider and some older seasons are in 720p or only SD eg Stargate
It may well be that the season you want is only available in 720p

How do I access and use my Itunes library from a different/new computer?  My computer is no longer working, so I need to be able to access my library from my wife's computer.

Your library will only be where you put it.  Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to the new one.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

How do I view a movie I rented and downloaded to my computer on my apple TV. The ATV is not seeing the rented movie in my shared itunes library? I can't seem to transfer the rental to the ATV from the computer!

    Dear friends,
Thank you for responding to my problem so promptly. Frankly, I did not expect to hear from people so soon! The fact is that as soon as I posted the question, I was shown a number of similar queries and managed to find the answer. I have to say it's not intuitive! I have an apple TV original version. Apparently I had the ATV on streaming and not syncing. Streaming does not allow you to stream a rental from your computer whereas you can sync and transfer the rental from the computer!
    Thanks again.

  • My shared iTunes library shows up fine on my Apple TV, but when I try to access the same library on my iPad to view the shared TV Shows everything jumbled and all over the place. There does not seem to be any order and many shows are missing.

When trying to access the shared iTunes library of my Macbook Pro on my iPad(iOS 5.1) the TV Shows are all mixed up. Some shows are not even displayed. The same library display normally via my Apple TV. It appears that iPad using iOS 5 has lost the ability to recoginize that TV Shows have a main show title followed by a number of episodes eg., 'Top Gear', Season 17, Episode 1 to 6, and 'Modern Marvels', Vol lll, Episodes 1 to 16. This has to be a glitch with iOS 5 as it was working fine in previous OS versions.
Does anyone know if Apple is aware of this anomally or is there a work-around? Thanks

Perhaps you should ask over in the iPad community, you may get better answers there.
It's actually my fault that psoon ended up here ... s/he intially posted over at Home Sharing, and I tried a relocate request to Apple TV rather than iPad.

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses

  • Sharing Itunes library between windows desktop and macbook not working

Hi, I just bought my laptop today. I've had it about 3 hours. I have 2147 songs on my windows itunes library, and i would love to be able to put them on the laptop too. Now, both of my computers are on the local area connection, but for some reason when i go to network places on my desktop the laptop doesnt show up. When i go to iTunes on my laptop and click import, i find my server, i find my computer, and then it asks me for a domain name, a username, and a password. I've tried multiple combinations, i'm not sure which username/pw combo its looking for but no matter what I do i get no error messages telling me i'm wrong, but absolutely nothing happens. Please help.

This is a compleentary advice: MAKE SURE THAT WINDOWS AND MAC HAVE THE SAME GROUP NAME!
In mac go to the preferences and activate Windows Sharing from the network.
Then go with the finder to applications utility and Directory Access. SMB is the protocol that OS X uses to exchange with Windows. Go into its proprieties and choose the same name you have given to your windows group (USUALLY "WORKGROUP" but it may differ)
To change the name in windows Xp is even easier. right click the m computer and choose properties and then the "Name" tag - change the group - You'll need to restart.
Almost forgot: you have to share the Music Folder on XP to have it show up from the mac. Right click it and choose Properties - Share tab - Activate network sharing
And remember, it is easier with a USB drive

  • Song Count Different in iTunes Library and iPod

I am perplexed now. iTunes says I have 6643 songs in the library, and it says it is fully synched with my iPod. Yet the iPod thinks it has only 6603 songs on it. I have gone carefully through the library, and every song thinks it is downloaded. When I mount the iPod, and highlight it in the Source column, the library also reports that the iPod has only 6603 songs on it, so it agrees with the iPod. So what are the 40 songs that the library has that won't download onto the iPod?

Solution found. I find this amazing, but the iTunes library and the iPod treat duplicates in different ways. In iTunes, if one accidentally ends up with a duplicate song (for example by ripping the same CD twice, not realizing it was ripped before) the iTunes library shows the song twice (and the underlying mp3 files exists twice in the store). And the number of songs showing in the library includes both copies of the song, the original and the duplicate. If you then synch up the iPod, however, iTunes only loads one copy of the song to the iPod. So in my case it transpired that there were 40 duplicates on my computer, none of which downloaded to the iPod, and that is why the song count was higher in the iTunes library, and why the volume of music in the library showed as 240 MB more than what was in the iPod. Very strange design that iTunes knows enough not to download duplicates, but still shows them in the library. Solution is to go to Edit / Show Duplicates in the iTunes library, but be careful as there will be many false positives.
