Sharing iTunes music between two users (two logins) on one Mac

Hi,
I have a Macbook with the latest iTunes. My I have a lot of music in my library which I want to be able to share with my wife when she logs in under her own ID. How can I get my library to show up in her iTunes library? I tried >Prefs>Sharing, but this did nothing. There was no change. I also tried setting the files to allow all to Read/Write in the "Get Info" window - no joy. There must be a way. Please advise.
Thank you
Kyur

Zevoneer,
I talked to a mac cust rep and he game me the same article. I did everything step by step but when I open up itunes in my acct or my wifes acct, I can only see music bought with each acount respectively. Do I need to import libraries? I just want to be able to share our music on itunes.
Thanks in advance.

  • Question/Problem Sharing iTunes Library between multiple users

    Hello all,
I have a question (potential problem) regarding sharing an iTunes Library between multiple users.
In the past, I had placed the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared, and created an alias to it in the "Music" folder of each user, and it worked fine.  However, with a recent upgrade to Mac OS 10.5, only the Home user account can access the library.
I read the Apple Support Document http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203 uner Mac OS X which specifically states *not* to move the iTunes folder, just the iTunes Media folder (which I don't have, would that be iTunes Music?).
Any recommendations?  Should I delete the different alias, move the iTunes folder back to the home user, and then follow the instructions in the support document?
We're also looking to sync music purchsed on our iPod touches, as well as apps (which weren't supported in our privous Mac OS X version.
    Any advice is appreiciated.

    yes.
specifically states *not* to move the iTunes folder
*do* keep the entire iTunes folder in /users/shared, however, instead of creating aliases, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder in /users/shared.
obviously, only one iTunes at a time can access the library !

  • Sharing iTunes music between two User accounts

    hey all,
my mom and i share an iMac G5, each with our own user account. we both listen to a lot of the same music and it seems silly to use double the Hard drive space by each maintaining separate iTunes libraries. What is the best way to share music between user accounts? is there a way to make it so that when she opens iTunes, it will open as if it is opening iTunes on my account, giving her immediate access to all my music? any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanx much!
    David

    This article describes two methods:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
If you want only one library, use the second method.
    There are some disadvantages:
If one of the users deletes a song, the other can't play it no more.
If one user adds a song, the other has to add it to his/her library too.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sharing iTunes music between users on the same PC?

So I have nearly 9000 tracks in my iTunes folders under 'My Music'. Other users of this PC cannot see my files. What's the best way to transfer all my music to a shared area on the PC so that other users can play the music? Furthermore, how do I configure iTunes so that, going formard, it uses the shared area by default, in addition to users' own 'My Music' areas? I don't want to have to upload/download to my personal area everytime, then copy to the shared area? I guess what I'm asking is: "What's the most flexible way to configure iTunes for sharing on the same PC?". Please share your knowledge, experience & wisdom!

  • Sharing iTunes library between different user accounts

I recently purchased my imac and made the leap from the PC world. I set up another user account aside from the general administrator and followed the steps of having itunes folder go to the users/shared folder in an effort to be able to share files between users. I am able to now share the library between users but find that when I load new songs onto one user I then need to go into the other user's account and manually copy the new songs from the shared folder into itunes.
Anyone know how I can have it so when I load songs into one users itunes they will automatically appear in library of the other user's itunes without having to take the step of copying/importing?
Also when I was downloading and importing over 4000 songs my imac had the transparent black box which informed me I needed to shut down my computer at least twice. Should I be concerned? I'm assuming this notice is very similar to the "blue screen of death" known in the PC world so that can't be good especially when I paid the extra $ for fully loaded imac.
    Thanks for the help!

That is not normal at all.

  • Sharing Itunes music between accounts on same computer

    Hi
Is it possible to share Itunes music library between three accounts on same computer so if my wife logs into her account she can see my music library

    This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that when it says "publicly accessible location", it needs to be a place where everyone has read and write access. The most common such place is the Shared folder in the Users folder, but you can place the music elsewhere if you change the access permissions manually (don't start tinkering with permissions unless you're confident you know what you're doing and can reverse things if they get messed up).

  • Sharing iTunes Music between accounts in Front Row

I have two accounts set on my computer. The primary account shares it's iTunes library with the secondary one. The shared music works fine inside of iTunes but when when I attempt to find the shared music on the secondary account via Front Row it states that it cannot find Shared Music. Does Front Row not have access to the shared music on other accounts on the same computer?
All my apps have the most resent updates.

I have the same problem. I think Cory made an assumption in his reply, that there is music in the library of the secondary accounts iTunes. My Secondary Account has no music at all in the iTunes library. In iTunes for the Secondary Account there are two sources of shared music available in the shared music folder, both play fine from iTunes. The first source is shared music from my primary accounts iTunes library, the second source is from the library of an XP based machine on my network.
When accessing shared music from Front Row logged in on the secondary account, the music shared from the XP machine is available as listed and named in iTunes, the music shared from the primary accounts iTunes library is not available.

Just bought a new iMac and want to share my library with my wife on same computer. We have separate user profiles on the computer, but don't want to have to import entire 200gb library twice onto the same machine. Is there a way to get her profile to see my music on the same computer?

  • Using the same photos and music between two user accounts in the same Mac

    Hi,
I think this question might have already been asked in the forum.
    1. I have one MacBook Pro and two user accounts (One for me and one for my wife)
    2. We are having two seperate iPhones with seperate AppleIDs
    3. We want to maintain the apps / calendar / mail / reminders / contacts as seperate - Through iCloud (Seperate Apple ID approach) - All this is fine
    4. All we want to have it shared is the Music files and the Photo library without duplicating
I have tried the shared folder approach for the music and having the iTunes point to that directory for the libary location in the preferences but unfortunately if she adds a folder to the library mine does not get updated unless I do a add folder to library and vice versa.
Whats the best way to deal with the Photos / Music sharing between two user accounts on the same mac
    Thanks
    Shas

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support articles linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • How do I Sync my itunes music between two different computers

Can anyone tell me the step-by-step instructions for how to Sync my itunes music between two different computer.... one Mac at work and a second at home. I want to bring over all my work music onto my home Mac, some of which is the same but much of it is different.

Are you able to connect the two computers in any way? For instance is the work computer a laptop that you can bring home and network with your personal one? If the two devices are connected in some away there are a few utilities that can help you sync iTunes across different computers. You could begin your research by having a look at these for instance:
    TuneRanger
    SuperSync

  • Sharing Itunes library with another User Account & Fast Switching

Hi. I recently purchased a new iMac G5 and am in the process of setting it up to be used by 2 separate users (girlfriend and me). I apologize in advance if this is more of an Itunes issue and not solely an Administration issue.
My question deals with creating a new user account on my Mac (with Fast Switching) and allowing my girlfriend to share my iTunes library with the ability to transfer music to her ipod when she is logged into her own unique account. I will be the Administrator on the Mac.
We are trying to avoid loading our music two times into the Mac under each of our logins. Is there a way that we can share the music I have already loaded into my Itunes library when she is logged into her account so that she can transfer to her ipod and create her own distinct playlists? If so, any advice on how to enable this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Seth
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Unfortunately, baltwo's solution will not allow your girlfriend to create any playlists or copy songs to iPod.
The easiest thing would be to share the entire music folder, so anyone of you can listen to your music.
    You'd have two options.
If you want to be using the exact same library, so any playlist you created can be edited by your girlfriend and vice versa:
    1. Go to yourusername/Music/iTunes. You'll find two files called "iTunes library" and "iTunes music library" Copy them to your desktop, so you'll have a backup just in case.
    2. Move your yourusername/Music folder to computer/users/shared. (The folder will be copied ONLY in case your using FileVault, so you'd have to delete the original User/Music folder after making sure you'd got a functional copy at computer/users/shared) Select users/shared, press "apple+i" to get the info window, go to "Ownership" change all permissions to "read & write" and hit "apply to enclosed items"
    3. In case you're using FileVault, either delete or rename the original Music folder within your own account. Again, not necessary as long as FileVault isn't enabled.
    4. Select computer/users/shared/music, hold down "ctrl" while clicking on it and choose "create alias" from the contextual menu. Copy that alias into your homefolder as well as your girlfriend's account (need to log in) and rename it to "music" without the "alias" at the end.
    5. Launch iTunes. Done.
    6. Don't worry, in case you don't see your music. I've used a slightly different approach, yet this one should work totally fine.
If you want to listen to the same music, yet be able to set up your own playlists, ratings etc.:
    For your account:
    - go to yourusername/Music/iTunes, move "iTunes Music" to computer/users/shared and change ownership according to #2.
    - If FileVault is enabled, check #3. Of course, you want to rename the original "iTunes Music" in this case.
    - create an alias for computer/users/shared/iTunes Music and copy the alias to yourusername/Music/iTunes. Rename it to "iTunes Music" without "alias".
    - Launch iTunes. Should be working the way it used to. Quit.
    For your girlfriend's account:
    - log in, copy alias to username/Music/iTunes, rename alias.
    - Launch iTunes, go to File-> Add to Library, select username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music, choose.
    That's it.
The only downside is, only one user at a time can access the music folder, so if you're logged in and running iTunes, you're girlfriend, logged in via fast user switching, won't be able to open iTunes until you quit it for yourself. Haven't found a way around this yet.
Fell free to report any issues.

  • Sharing iTunes Music folder on external HD but not Mobile Applications folder?

I share the iTunes Music folder on an external HD between two separate Mac user accounts. Each user has their own iPhone and syncs within their own user account. All the media for user#1 (books, apps, etc) are in the appropriate folders in this shared iTunes Music folder, which means user #2 is seeing all user #1's stuff in their iPhone sync windows in iTunes.
I don't want to share anything but the actual iTunes library music files between the two Mac user accounts (and the two iPhones). Everything else for each user (apps, books etc.) I want to keep separate. Both users have a separate iTunes store account. Is this possible?

It seems that removing the apps of user#1 from user#2's library (i.e. deleting them in iTunes window, not trashing the actual file) does the trick ... this change updates the user's library .xtml file. Now user#2's apps are syncing only on their phone when they log in and use iTunes. When user#1 logs in iTunes just shows user#1 apps and syncs those.

  • Sharing itunes library amonst 1 users on a single mac

I'm having problems sharing my itunes library amonst several users on a single mac. I've tried copying both the entire iTunes folder and just the iTunes Music folder to ~/users/shared with no luck. Help!

Here's a better statement of the problem -- i have two users on one mac, both have itunes tied to same library on an external drive.
I understand that is what you want to do as you've done it before. However, if it doesn't work anymore, there's not much you can do. It may not be something that can't be overcome, but I don't know what to do besides creating a new Library and rebuilding it with all your music on the external. There also may be alternatives other than what I can think of.
The external drive should be workable like the Shared folder, as long as the permissions on the folder are such that each user can read and write.
Did you tell iTunes to use that location as the Library? You can pick a new Library by holding down the option key when starting iTunes and it will ask where to find the Library.
I don't have a way to experiment with this on my system, but I seem to think a lot of people run their iTunes library that way, so I'm suprised that there aren't more posts about it.  It may be something unique to your library, but I'm not sure what it might be.
    Apple please fix this.
Since that is an unsupported configuration, I wouldn't put too much hope in seeing a fix.
