Sharing Lexmark Printer with a MacBook

Just bought a Lexmark X6675 WIFI all in one printer and have it to share through my Powermac G5 connected by USB. The MacBook can see the printer, cue to print, but the printer is paused. I click RESUME and it continues to revert to "Printer Paused". Sharing is on, Appletalk is engaged, like I said, the MacBook can see the printer as shared, but it will not unpause.
I did try to set it up through the wireless network also and the printer was added successfully to the network. The same problem exists, the printer is paused and will not resume. I have the latest drivers, followed all directions, and repeated the setup several times after reseting printers. There seems to be no reason for this to be happening. Sharing is the easiest way, but that is not working.
Anyone have any ideas? I have never had a problem with setting up a printer. Thanks everyone!!
Oh yeah, the MacBook is also running 10.5.8

Did you install the appropriate HP Photosmart C5500 printer drivers on the windows computer? Without that, it won't be able to know what it's looking for, even if you plugged it in via USB.

  • Cannot find shared windows printer with NEW macbook running leopard HELP!

I just bought a new Macbook this past week. Woo Hoo. I love everything about it with the exception of file sharing and printer sharing. I have a less than one year old pc running vista that is connected to a hp 1300 series all in one printer. I can not even find this printer anywhere on the mac. i have been able to connect to my pc server via the ip address and share files this way. I am at a loss and really have no knowledge of mac. it is really disheartening, as I had way less trouble setting up windows networks for my roommates in college.
Also, as a side helper, how can I setup a shared folder that can be accessed from both the mac and the pc. I would like something that I can set on the desktop of both in order to share files better and more efficiently than connecting to a server everytime I want to do this. Please help, and explain as if I am as stupid as I appear.
    Thanks.

  • Printing with my macbook

    Hi,
I used to own an original iBook that died earlier this year and replaced it with a MacBook at the beginning of school. With both computers I'm still having problems printing in my Windows-based home network (my dad's choice, not mine). I was able to use an IP connection to print at my school, but none of our home printers have IP compatibility. When I try to use a printer on the shared office computer, all I can pull up is the PDF virtual printer, and none of the actual connected printers show up. I tried plugging directly into our Cannon MF5550 laser printer to discover that it doesn't have Mac drivers; however, our Epson Photo R200 does have native support. Any help is appreciated, because I have to use a lengthy and annoying work-around.
Thank You, it feels good to be back to Mac.

I'm not sure how your home network is set up as compared to what you have at school. Try the guide in this article, I helped my Dad set up his MacBook Pro to print via his WiFi LAN to a USB shared printer on a WinXP PC with these instructions. Not sure if it will work if you can't find native Mac support drivers or gimp-print drivers for that particular printer.

If all else fails: Printing to PDF, then copying the PDF to a shared folder on the PC via the network, and then printing locally from the PC might be a hassle, but you could remotely control the PC from the Mac using the free Remote Desktop Client from www.microsoft.com/mac if the PC is running XP:

    possibly a less-annoying work around...good luck.

  • Sharing a printer with Leopard macbok

    Hello,
I have a iMac G5 with a printer attached that im trying to share with a macbook downstairs. I have everything set up in 'sharing' by enabling 'printer sharing' on both computers. on the macbook i have the desired printer also set as the default.
Help? am i doing something wrong?
    Thanks

    am i doing something wrong?
Yep, you can only have Printer Sharing enabled on the one with the Printer connected, the MacBook will need to be rebooted after changing that on it.

  • Why can't I setup my HP Photosmart C4580 Printer with my Macbook?

Okay, first of all, I've got to say that this has to be one of the most troublesome pieces of computer hardware that I've ever had the misfortune of running across. The only thing that keeps me from going all "Office Space" on it, (as another frustrated user put it) is that I've had the printer since I got my Macbook in late 2008, and there have been huge stretches of time when it has worked more or less perfectly. However, each time I update my OS, or try to add the printer to a new computer, all **** breaks loose. This latest time has really taken the cake- as I've been messing with it consistently for several weeks and have not been able to use it at all.
I guess it began when I upgraded to OS X Snow Leopard around April. Prior to this the wi-fi printing had worked fine, but after this upgrade for some reason I could only print with the USB connected. Then, about a month ago I upgraded to OS X Lion, and I'm still unable to get the wi-fi printing to work.
The point I'm at now, is that I've downloaded what I believe to be the appropriate HP setup utility package, and went through that all the way through where it sets up the wireless functionality of the printer and it says to go to 'Print & Fax' in System Preferences and add the printer. So I do that, and I get to this point:
    Setting up 'Photosmart C4500 series
    [F559E3]...'
Software for this printer is available from Apple.
Would you like to download and install it?
... where I obivously click "Download and Install". At this point, I get a dialog that says "Finding software" for several minutes, and then says:
    Setting up 'Photosmart C4500 series
    [F559E3]...'
The software for this printer is currently unavailable.
Please contact the printer's manufacturer for the
    latest software.
... at this point the only option is "Cancel", and when I click that, I'm left with no printers in my list of printers. Likewise, if I don't click "Download and Install on the previous screen, it cancels the setup.
This leads me to believe that it may actually be an issue with Apple instead of HP at this point, but I'm not sure. Likewise, I've tried other options such as setting up the printer by it's IP address and by something called an HP Jetdirect - Socket, but those methods were unfruitful.
I feel like I should note that, when I go to "Add Printer", I'm presented with a list of both the USB connected version of my printer, and the "Bonjour Multifunction" version (wi-fi). So it seems that the computer is having no trouble at least detecting the printer, which has been a problem for me in the past.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Despite HP's statement that 10.7 is supported for the Photosmart C4580, there are no drivers for this.  I spoke to their Support Line and basically you need to buy a new printer.  Wow!  Wish I had known that before I upgraded to Lion.
HP does have a Trade-In and Trade-Up program.  Sounds like the newer model printers will also handle the AirPrint for your iPhone and iPads.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
What's the rest of that error message? Posting what you did is similar to posting as an error message the text "I'm having trouble with ..." with nothing following.
I'd try several things until things work:
    1) Open the Print & Fax panel of System Preferences. Right-click on a printer entry and choose "Reset printing system".
    2) Delete the entry for your printer, then add it back.
    3) Check the Epson Web site for a recent driver for your printer. Download it, then first run it in "uninstall" move, then in "install" mode.
I'll be personally interested in what you learn. I have a relative who has an RX620 and 10.6.4, but I'm not sure he's tried to print anything yet.

  • Sharing Linux printer with Mac

P4 with Debian Etch (testing), kernel 2.6.12-1-686,
Gnome desktop and USB attached printer and scanner
    PMac G5 running OS X Tiger (10.4.4)
I've got my AppleTalk/zeroconf LAN setup working for file sharing - with netatalk and task-howl on the Linux box.
When I had my printer connected to my Mac I could print to it from the Linux box with just CUPS whether the Mac AppleTalk connection with the Linux box was active or not. Then I decided I wanted more desk space around my Mac and moved the printer to my Linux box. Now I can print from my Linux box, but I can't seem to figure out how to print to it from my Mac :-P
For once I'm finding the printer setup on my Mac the more difficult I've tried it outside the AppleTalk connection by simply supplying an address of 192.168.2.69:631 and though the printer definition is accepted, actual printing says the printer is busy. I've also tried it with the AppleTalk connection up, again supplying the same address, with the same results. I've also tried variations of addresses without success.
I'm sure I'm tripping over the obvious but what??? Is there a way to specify the Linux printer from my Mac outside AppleTalk? Or if I need to through AppleTalk, do I need to further edit my Linux netatalk setup - maybe the papd.conf???
If I do need to (somehow) use the Linux printer with AppleTalk, there is another lesser question. How do I ensure that the howl tools (mDNSResponder for advertising) start at login like afpd and atalkd. Following is the mDNSBrowse info if it's any help.
I'm keeping notes on the detail steps in order to share the setup with anyone else they might help, so if you want to see the detail steps I've taken so far I can send along the text file or put it up on my dotMac account for download.
    Thanks,

    Hi Lee,
Of course I don't mind your sharing my instructions; the more testing we have the better. Did you not have to do any configuration of netatalk and the howl-tools? I know it's zeroconf but I've never dealt with an app that didn't require some configuration. Well, maybe the dream is true...
In theory my instructions are symmetric. The Mac's /etc/cups/client.conf file has a ServerName line. Of course, whether or not Apple's print mechanism will honor it is another matter. I can't test it but I would think it worth a try. I would think that getting printing to work from Mac to Linux would require that the Linux server be setup to share its printer via CUPS as I described.
Once the Linux box is sharing its printer via CUPS, here is how I would guess you should add it to the Mac via the Printer Setup Utility.
In the "Printers" menu, select "Add Printer...". The Printer Browser dialog will open. Click on the "IP Printer" button, the second button at the top left. Beside "Protocol:" select "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP". That is the protocol CUPS uses and points to port 631 which is what you want for a printer shared via CUPS. In the address line naturally you want to put the local address of Linux box. Under "Queue:" you can put the name you chose when you setup the Linux printer to work with CUPS. However, assuming that you only have one print queue, it should work to leave that blank.
Below that is another group of fields to fill in. I'm not sure how important they are. I am guessing here since I haven't tested it but I would guess that "Name:" and "Location:" are for display purposes only and that what you put there doesn't really matter. The "Print Using:" menu is another matter. I'm sure that the driver resides on the machine to which the printer is attached so specifying a driver on the client doesn't really make sense to me if you're using IPP. I know that in a purely Linux environment, all I have to specify is the ServerName so no driver should be necessary. I would think that "Auto Select" would be the best choice if you have to make one but I would try not doing anything with it if you can. If neither of those work, try selecting the actual make of the printer. Since you had it connected to the Mac once, I assume that you actually do have a driver. I just don't see why you would need it.
Setting up the printer to work with CUPS was the only thing that I really had to research when setting up our Linux lab and server. I think the only important decision was the driver. The printer that our Linux server uses is itself a JetDirect network printer so the Device URI was actually important as well but the printer currently connected to my Mac (OS X configured CUPS automatically) has a Device URI of file:///dev/null so it can't be very important for a local printer. However, if the Linux box has a device file for the local printer, you may have to use that as the Device URI. (with file:// in front of it)
If you've set the cups.conf file as I described in my instructions, (allow the Mac access to <Location />) you can actually configure the CUPS queue via the web from the Mac. Just aim your browser to http://<Linux_IP>:631/printers and click on the "Add Printer" link at the bottom left if it isn't already listed. If it is already listed then maybe Linux configures local printers automatically too. Otherwise you may have to click on the "Configure Printer" link.

  • Sharing a printer with computers with different operating systems

    Hello,
I am trying to setup my printer so that the three computers in my network can share it.
This how my network is setup:  I have one desktop that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2.  It is connected to a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless-B BroadBand Router with a wired ethernet connection. The printer, Lexmark x1185 is connected to this computer(Windows XP) by USB connection.
I also have a laptop and desktop that are running Windows ME.  The laptop is connected by wired connection with a Zonet ZEN1200 10/100 Mbps cardbus PCMCIA card.  The desktop with Windows ME is connected with a wireless connection using a WUSB11 adapter.  All connect to tthe internet with no problems, but  i cannot get them to share a printer.
    Please Help.
    Thank you.

check whether they ping each other's ip add ... if yes , then go ahead and enable file and printer sharing between the computers...
if not able to ping , ensure that the firewalls on all the computers is turned off ..

  • Sharing a Printer With Microsoft Remote Desktop

How do you set it up?
The printer (Epson Stylus Photo 820) is connected through USB to an Intel iMac.
I control a Windows XP Pro PC from the iMac through firewire with Microsoft Remote Desktop and it works fine (although I can't get it to share the internet connection.) I have turned printer-sharing "On" in the iMac Preferences. I have also checked "Printers" in the "Connect automatically to these local devices when logged on to the remote computer" dialog box of MS RDC.
When I go to Add Printer in Windows, I search for a printer and get a tree view with "Microsoft Windows Network" on top and "WORKGROUP" under it. I try to input the printer name, but it tells me it can't find such a printer.
If I go to the Epson control panel under Windows, and click on ports, it shows the name of the iMac on four separate ports, and if I activate one of them it shows the Stylus 820.
    But then it doesn't print.
    Any ideas?
