Sharing library on imac

This is so aggravating. I read a bunch of posts but i cant figure out how to put my itunes library in the users/shared folder then get access to it from mine and my wife's user accounts. I went into itunes preferences/advanced/general settings to the music folder location but it wont let me select where it is. It only gives me the option to open it.

I went into itunes preferences/advanced/general settings to the music folder location but it wont let me select where it is. It only gives me the option to open it.
When you click on Change..., you go to where you want the music folder to be.
This will create a new music folder.
A few steps but all music will be available to all users.
Do this...
Quit iTunes.
Drag your entire iTunes folder from /Username/Music to /Users/Shared.
Log out.
Log in on your Wife's account.
Click on the iTunes icon to start it, then immediately press an hold the Option key.
iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library.
Select the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared.
iTunes will open and all the music in your account will be there.
Now, go to iTunes prefs -> Advanced -> Importing.
Make sure Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library is ticked.
Go to File -> Add to library and select the iTunes music folder in /Wife's username/Music/iTunes. This will add all the music in her account.
When done, quit iTunes.
Go to /Wife's username/Music and drag the iTunes folder to the trash. Do NOT empty the trash yet.
Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Option).
Everything should be there.
Quit iTunes and log out of her account.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should bet there.
Quit iTunes and go back into her account and make sure iTunes works okay. If it does, empty the trash.

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • TS2972 I can see the song titles in itunes shared library on my new imac  but songs will not play. I have a pc with wifi network that the main music library is on. tried saving songs from pc to an external drive then to new mac but thats not working eithe

attempted to transfer itunes music from pc to new imac. didn't work. apple suggest using sharing method. main library of music is on pc. did those steps and shared library shows up on mac but when you click on the song to play it doesn't play or maybe ther is no content? any suggestions?

    Hi there,
It sounds like your purchased content is not transfering via a flash drive. It may be easier to re-download this contnet directly from iTunes. Take a look at the article below for mor information.

  • Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally.

Welcome to the Apple Community Katie.
You can import content via homesharing to a library on a computer but not to a mobile device.

  • How do you import all songs from a shared library?

I have 862 songs in my iTunes library on the family computer, and i would like to transfer them to my iTunes on my laptop. I already have home sharing on, and I can see the shared library on the iTunes on my laptop, but is there a way i can transfer all the songs from the shared library to the iTunes on my laptop without having to import each song on its own? Thank you in advance.

what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my iMac's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
once the homeshared library has loaded, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import.
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting (highlighting) it and clicking the import button.
via settings, you can select which newly purchased content is transferred automatically to homeshared libraries

  • Using the Remote App and playing iTunes from a shared Library

I have a playlist set up in my main iTunes library on my iMac.  This is a shared library on my local network at home.  I can access and play the library remotely from my MacBook.  I want to move my MacBook outside with external speakers for a party.  I want to be able to access the shared library from the iMac inside the house from my MacBook and be able to control it with the Remote App.
My problem is that when I use Remote and the MacBook outside (I've set up the iTunes passcode with that computer and my iPod) it will only recognize the library on that computer, even if I am logged in to the shared library and it is visible in the MacBook.  So basically, remote is doing what it is suppose to do in a normal situation, but I need it to recognize and play from the shared library.
When I turn on home sharing on the iPod I can access all the libraries on the various macs in our house, but the music will only play out of that particular machines speakers.
I don't have wireless speakers, so I can't think of another way to do this.  Is there?
    Thanks, Sandy

Well, I've got it to work although not ideal.
    1. On my main computer (iMac) I created the playlist that I want available to control at a party.
    2. I went to iTunes settings/Sharing and selected "Share selected playlists" and checked the playlist I made for a party.
    3. I Linked my iPod to MacBook (which is outside with external speakers) using the 4 digit code
    4. iPod, Home Sharing Off
    5. Select the Library on iPod
    6. Select "More" (bottom right of iPod)
    7. Select "Shared" from the list that appears
    8. Select the computer that has the shared library
    9. Select the playlist (or lists if you created others)
This setting is allowing me to use my iPod "Remote App" to play an iTunes playlist (or the entire catalogue) from a shared library on my MacBook WITH the sound coming from my MacBook and NOT from my iMac where the original iTunes catalogue is located.
Not sure if this is the easiest way, but it's working.

  • I want to move a movie from Shared Library to LIbrary, how do I do this?

I want to move a movie from Shared Library to LIbrary, how do I do this?

this extra info helps a lot. with home sharing you should be able to just import the file from your iMac into your MBP. this is the way i've done it at home.
-just make sure both are on with itunes open
    -select your imac's library
    - hightlight the file you want then click on import towards the bottom of the screen.

  • Music from shared library will not display by artist or album.

How do I set up home sharing to display music from shared library by artist and album?

I am not sure if the fix that cuatro476804 suggested is the issue here.  I have also been experiencing freezing issues with my Apple TV since the latest Apple TV/iTunes updates.  Here is the bug report I just submitted to Apple:
Since the last update to Apple TV or the last updates to iTunes (not sure which is the culprit) Apple TV freezes when trying to play music streamed from iTunes on a Mac.
I have an iMac running iTunes [11.01 (12)] and a 3rd gen Apple TV running the latest OS release as of 12-20-2012.  Since the last software update for iTunes and Apple TV, the Apple TV will freeze when playing a song after about 10 - 20 seconds.  This happens whether I am using my computer directly or when using the "remote" app on my iPhone 5.  I can restart my song again by pressing play, but the song will freeze again after another 10 - 20 seconds.
I can temporarily cure the bug by unplugging my Apple TV for 5 seconds to cold start the gizmo, and then both iTunes and Remote seem to be able to stream without any issues.
but when I try to play music the next day, the same freezing issue occurs again like clockwork.
I thought this was just a rare buggy issue, maybe even a WiFi or other communication problem, but I have been playing tunes on my Apple TV for a couple years streamed from my iMac with not problems.  This only started happening after the last software update.  Again, not sure if this is the Apple TV update, or the iTunes 10.01 (12) update causing this.
Daily rebooting of the Apple TV is not an acceptable solution.  Were this a Microsoft product, sure, but Apple product... its just supposed to work :-)
I hope others will report the same issue so this gets repaired soon.

  • Help with iTunes Shared Library (Vista and OS X)

I am trying to share my Vista-based iTunes library with my new iMac. I have an issue now that iTunes does not let me select the shared iTunes library that resides on the PC. The following is how things are set up
    1) I've moved all of my PC-based music, my iTunes Library (.itl) file and the cover art to an external HD on my Vista PC.
    2) I've set permissions on all of the Vista files (music, library, art) to be read/write for available to all connected users.
    3) I have also mounted the PC-based external drive on my iMac. Permissions seem to be ok, as when I view files via the Finder, they are visable and accessible.
    4) However, when I try to open iTunes on iMac to change the shared library (using the OPTION key), the iTunes Library.itl file on the hard drive is completely greyed out. No matter how I change permissions or sharing on the Vista machine, I cannot seem to select the shared library.
    5) Interesting that I HAVE successfully accessed the same library through another Windows-based machine (Windows XP). In that instance I can access the network drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file no problem. Music streams fine after I do that. Also, from my iMac I am able to create files in the same directory where the iTunes files reside (using program like Text Editor) so it seems I do have write access and permissions to the directory.
Any clue why this is happening? It seems like iTunes is the one program that is not picking up the permissions from the iMac, but other Mac programs are. It's driving me a little nuts at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx

    Bump. Same issue. Help please.

  • Airplay shared library empty

I have recently set up a media server, consisting of a Mac mini running in headless configuration, and connected over (wired) ethernet to my Airport Extreme Base Station. With this configuration, I can play all of my music through my AirPlay-enabled hi-fi. I have Home Sharing enabled on all of my devices.
My problem is that on my Apple TV (version 2), although I can see the shared library on the Mac mini, and can access it, every section gives me a message about there being no content, i.e. the library appears empty.
Shared library content is visible on my main computer (iMac over wi-fi), from the remote app. on my iPhone (wi-fi), but not from the Apple TV (wi-fi).
Any ideas on why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Please ignore this question. The problem was solved with a simple reboot of the Apple TV. I can now see all shared library content on all devices.

  • Why aren't all of my television shows loading on my iPad under the "shared' library?

I have the 1st gen ipad.  When i go into the ipad's "videos" app and load the "shared" library from my imac, all of my movies, podcasts, and music videos appear to show up with no problem.  However, on the "tv shows" tab, it is only loading some of the shows.  The only thing I've been able to narrow it down to is that it seems to stop alphabetically each time I re-load.  The same shows are always added and they appear to be the first ones in alpha order until they start with the letter "L."
Are there some settings that would cause it not to load other shows of certain quality?  Some other way to get these to load?
    Thanks.

Do you already have a solution? I have the same problem!

  • Home Sharing Library doesn't include all music that's in main Music Library

Sorry if this has been answered previously. I haven't been able to fashion a search to find the answer.
I turned on Home Sharing in the Remote app on my iPhone 4. It readily found my Home Sharing Library from my iMac (that contains 1306 items). After entering in my Apple ID and password, I tried to search for a recently purchased song using the Remote app and it didn't find it. I went to the iMac and immediately found the song in the Library and in the Purchased playlist. I also noticed that the Library on the iMac contains 2781 items.
Question #1: Why wouldn't the Home Sharing Library on my iMac not contain the same songs that are in the Library on the same iMac?
To solve the problem, I just synced the iMac to the Remote app (not through Home Sharing) and was able to see my entire library.
Problem/Question #2: Since my Home Sharing library doesn't show all the music, when my wife's MacBook Home Shares, she too does not see all the music available for streaming. They are all on the same wi-fi network. The reason I use Home Sharing vs. Sharing of the library is that I automatically transfer iPhone apps across the network as she syncs her iPhone to her computer (she wants no music).
Hoping someone can help me troubleshoot.
    Thanks.
    Martin

i'm guessing you used more than one iTunes store account to purchase content.
if that's the case, try authorizing your Mac to play/use the content purchased from the other iTS account(s).
that's basically very easy. all you have to do is +log out+ of one account (click on the account name in the Store window and select +sign out+ from the pop-up dialog) and into the other, and then they will both be authorized. when done, sign back into your usual account. you'll have to do that one time only.

  • Certain songs inaccessible in shared library

I'll try to keep this as concise as possible.
I have all of my music in my iTunes library on my iMac. All of it is accessible and all the files play correctly.
I have the library shared and access the library from my Macbook Pro. Everything works as expected and I'm able to play my files on the Macbook Pro over my network...except a few files.
I've narrowed the problem down to some .m4a files that were purchased and downloaded from Beatport. They simply will not play from the shared library in iTunes. However:
If I browse directly to the files using the finder over the network, they can be played in Quicktime.
If I browse directly to the files and add them to my local library on the Macbook Pro, they play fine in iTunes.
The only way these files DON'T work is being played via the shared library. Otherwise, they work fine.
Thanks in advance for any ideas / suggestions.

I'm having the same problem (similar), but no resolution.
All of the files that are older files won't play, mostly ripped from CDs. My last ipod classic played them just fine. I bought a new one last month and its not playing them.
    These files play perfectly on:
    itunes
    iphone 3G
    iphone 4
I've even isolated it down to one song (for a sample) and put ONLY that song on the iphone 3G, ipod classic, and iphone 4, and the only problem is on the ipod classic.
I have removed all songs from the classica, reset it, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled softwared, just about everything i can think of. I'm happy to send the file to anyone who wants to trouble shoot with just a single song.
This is really really frustrating, because i got the calssic so i can carry the old songs that I don't have room for on my iphone.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Music app crashes connecting to shared library

I have an iPad 2 that is trying to connect to a shared library on my iMac.  Whenever I try to connect, I get the wait spinning icon and eventually the music app on the iPad just crashes (exits).
I have a couple AppleTVs in the house and they connect just fine.
All software on both the iPad 2 and the iMac are up to date (IOS 6.1 and OSX 10.8.2).
I have rebooted both and have reset the network on the iPad 2 without any resolve.
    Ideas?

Unfortunately, I gave up and didn't find a solution.  However, it is, as of today, working properly.
