Sharing library over network / iTunes won't launch

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. It's great. My itunes library is stored on a firewire drive which is connected to a Powerbook elsewhere on my network. I would like to load up the iTunes library from that machine rather than store it on my MacBook for space reasons.
First question is: What's the best way to do that?
I had it working by making a link (using ln in the terminal) from ~/Music/iTunes to the remote volume (/Volumes/Disk/iTunes) and that worked great. However I just accidentally launched iTunes without having that disk mounted. It presented an error and went away.
Now with the disk mounted, I can run iTunes but the main window never appears, and it is always "not responding" in the force quit window. (It does however mount any connected iPods which seems odd.) I've removed the link to the remote drive, deleted all traces of iTunes, and reinstalled, but nothing's changed.
Any advice?

Endquote,
This may sound simple, but have you tried to delete the .plist file associated with iTunes?
What's interesting, if I've found the right file, is that its not a standard .plist file. Apple calls it "iTunes Music Library.xml" and its in the active iTunes folder. This file seems to contain data about your library and I'm not sure if iTunes will rebuild it so back the file up before you delete it. Simply renaming it should suffice.
Please post back and let the community know if this worked. I only have one system right now, but you may consider for multiple systems to keep the Library local to the mac and use iBackUp to keep things in sync. This way you have multiple copies in case something should go south on one of the disks your music collection is on.

The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevent it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them or if you want to be able to put them back if it doesn't help, drag them to some other location. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistant the next time you launch iTunes. Note that you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
If that still doesn't work, try this:
Bugie: Perform a Thorough & Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes/QuickTime.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes won't launch after upgrade

I just downloaded the new iTunes upgrade onto my Macbook, and now iTunes won't launch. It just bounces once and then does nothing. I've gone through the uninstall and reinstall process, but still no dice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Also, since I uninstalled it, did I lose everything I'd previously downloaded to iTunes?!)
**I just realized I've accidentally posted this under the Windows discussion. Sorry.

  • Itunes won't launch after using norton utilities

    Hi,
I used Norton disk doctor and now itunes won't launch. How do I fix this?
    Many thanks!

Get rid of Norton's, it's far more trouble than it's worth. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you run Disk Doctor or the other parts of the suite, and is why they got out of the Utilities market for the Mac.
    1. Try repair Permissions with Disk Utility
    2. Try Trash the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder
    3. Try Re-install iTunes. Move the app from the Applications Folder to the Trash, then go to HD / Library / Receipts and trash any pkg file there with iTunes in the name.

  • ITunes won't launch if iPod is connected but ejected

If I connect my iPod (set to Disk Use, no auto-launch of iTunes), then eject it through the Finder, iTunes won't launch. It hangs with no window until force quit or the iPod is unplugged. I've noticed this through several versions of iTunes.
Note that I found this topic already in existence here, but I felt that the issue needed a bump to the top of the list.

    Are you using Leopard?
If so, let's try installing a QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard using a .dmg installer downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL761
If you install that does that clear up the iTunes trouble?

  • Itunes won't launch since update

Seems like i have the same problem as a lot of people.
Since last update itunes won't launch
Just get a white screen and the blue circle going around the pointer.
Have tried the complete unistalll and reinstall without success
One thing i noticed is that when it freezes and i open task manager to close it down it says 32 bit next to itunes not 64 bit?
Is the wrong version being downloaded?

Without trying to be funny here, why should the problem be with my user account or my PC!
Without trying to be funny, you've accidentally succeeded in being a bit funny here.
This is a user-to-user troubleshooting forum. Folks come here to troubleshoot their problems. So we, quite naturally assume that's what you were trying to do, and reply to try to help you fix it. The reason why you see so many people here saying there are problems is that this is where people come if they have problems and want to fix them.
If you believe the problem is all at Apple's end, and would like to register a sort of complaint with them (rather than do any troubleshooting of your problem), then it makes a heck of a lot more sense to contact Apple directly via the product feedback pages. (Because this is primarily an user-to-user forum, there's no guarantee an Apple person will see your post here. They will read your feedback via the form, although they also say they will not respond.) Here's a link through to the iTunes product feedback form:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
(Given that you're not here to troubleshoot, I'll bid you adieu, and desubscribe from this particular topic.)

My iTunes won't launch. It will give and error code 13014. How can I fix this?

    Hi tuzas2,
The article below may be able to help you with this issue.
Click on the link below to see more details and screenshots.
I've quoted some applicable information below for you:
iPhone and iPod touch: An unknown error (13014), (13136), or (13213) may occur after updating to iTunes 8.0.1 or later
    Solution 1
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
    Solution 2
Quit and reopen iTunes. If the issue continues, then restart your computer.
    Solution 3
Quit iTunes, temporarily disable the anti-virus security software on your computer, then reopen iTunes and try to sync your device. If iTunes successfully syncs your iPhone or iPod touch, consult the anti-virus software vendor.
    Solution 4
Turn off Genius in iTunes in the Genius sidebar (choose View > Hide Genius Sidebar).
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • Windows XP iTunes won't launch (using Parallels Desktop 4.0)

After installing latest version it won't launch at all.
I get an alert with a red cross that says:
"The itunes application could not be opened. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation"
I am using Parallels Desktop 4.0, with Windows XP SP2.
I've uninstalled all iTunes files, and reinstalled. Still nothing.
Before the update, iTunes would launch, but it said that the library couldn't be used because of access privileges.
    Someone please help...

I get the error message "itunes.exe has caused errors in windows. Error log created. Windows will now close." I've tried fixing iTunes using the "repair" option in itunes.exe, uninstalling and reinstalling both QuickTime and iTunes, and am now out of options.
    Help, please!
