Sharing linked files between mac and pc

Dear Community and AI Support,
My team is trying to share AI files between Macs and PCs.  That works fine until we have Linked assets.  Once we have linked assets, AI either forgets to, or is unable to, let us relink more than one of the linked files.  We can't edit the links or even delete them.  The linked files are just ignored, leaving the file half empty.
We've tried hacking the paths directly in the .AI file, hoping to eventually write a perl script to help us switch back and forth. but no luck.  We assume there is a checksum or crc code or hash, etc..., as AI won't even try to open the file after that.
But to clarify the issue. here is an example of the Mac and PC links we need to switch between using an excerpt from the AI file.  These are valid, working directories on both platforms.

ooohhhhh very interesting.  I did a find and replace on all the strings, but no dice.  I didn't think to look at those types of data.  But now that you have mentioned it, perhaps I'll do a diff on the same file saved on both platforms to see what has been changed.  Should have already thought of it, but your note has made me check my assumptions.

  • Linking files between Macs and PCs in InDesign

I'm Mac, my colleagues are PC.
They have removed the letter mapping from their server links to enable me and them to share InDesign files seemlessly. This works perfectly until an Indesign file draws graphics from two (or more) seperate servers. In this case, Indesign for me can only draw links from the server in which the file is saved. All graphics from the other server appear broken.
I'm sure PCs and Macs co-existing isn't rare. And I'm sure using graphics from multiple servers also isn't rare. How do I get around this problem?
    Many thanks,
    Nicola

All graphics from the other server appear broken.
What happens when you attempt to relink them?

  • Sharing .itl file between Mac and Windows

How do I share an .itl file located on a NAS between a Windows machine and a Mac? I can do it with two Windows machines, but one I add a Mac, every time I switch platforms the library rebuilds. Onle one machine is accessing the itl file at a time, all the content is on the NAS, and I have 11.0.2.25 on the Mac and 11.0.2.26 on the Windows machine (can't get 11.0.2.25 on the Windows machine.

Right now, I have Verizon DSL that uses a Westell router. It has 4 ethernet ports on the back in addition to the DSL connections. I have a HP Pavilion with Windows XP in the basement, an iMac G3 in my room, and an intel iMac in our living room all connected to the router by ethernet cables. Each computer is able to access the other computer's files. On the intel iMac I have Microsoft Remote Desktop installed so that I can log into the HP in the basement and control it from the iMac. I haven't tried operating this network wirelessly, but I would imagine that it would be possible. One thing that you might want to check is the router's configuration. My router has settings that either allow or block wireless signals. To access my router's settings I type in 192.168.1.1 in Safari or Internet Explorer. Having all 3 computers on the internet at the same time does not slow the speed of the DSL very much.
I hope this information will help.

  • My home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2.

my home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2, even during watching a movie.  I go to the mac to re-turn on home sharing but it is still on.  Any tips?  I also have to turn off and back on at the mac every time i switch on my apple tv.

Sharing Stopped working again over night.
I went to Apple Support Artical TS2972
As soon as I did this Home Sharing started working
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    Firewall Section
    5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
It made sense to me, but its still puzzling me after restarting a router would (in my first attempt) resolve the issue for a day.  This this time I applied the port forwarding TCP and UDP ports and saved the settings in the DLink DIR-655 and both my iPad2 and iPhone 3GS were now again finding the share. My ATV2 is also now accepting the Share.
Tommorrow will be the true test.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Sharing files between mac and PC's

I have an iMac running 10.4.8 and 2 PC's running XP home edition. I am trying to share files between them. They are networked through a router. The mac can see and connect to both of the PC's and I can open files on the PC's from the mac. The PC's can connect to each other and open files. The problem I'm having is connecting to the mac from either of the PC's. They all have the same workgroup name. I have windows file sharing on. Is there something else that needs to be done so the PC's can see and connect to the mac?

    Hi Pat-999,
To set up a link between Windows XP and the Mac do the following:
    1) Open "My Network Places" on the Windows computer.
    2) Double click on "Add a network place".
    3) A setup wizard will appear. Click next and choose the option to specify a network site, etc. Click Next.
    4) Open the System Preferences on your Mac. Choose Sharing. Under the Services tab, turn on the check box for "Windows Sharing". Click on the Accounts button and activate your account. If sharing hasn't started by itself, click the Start button. Write down the address where it says "Windows users can access your computer at...". It would be something like \\192.168.0.122\username
    5) Enter that address in the wizard at the Windows computer and click Next.
    6) It will take a few minutes for the connection to show up. When it does, give the connection a name and save it.
In the future, you then just need to have Windows sharing on at your Mac and double click the connection you saved to connect. When you do, a dialogue box will appear asking for the Mac users' name and password to connect. Put in your long name (the same one that appears any time the Mac asks for your password) and the password. A folder will open on the Windows desktop.
Initially, it will only let you set the connection up for your entire Mac account. So you will see all of the folders within that account. If you want to confine the connection to the drop box, then run the connection wizard again. This time, on the page where you enter the Mac address, you'll have a drop down menu of all of the folders in your account. Choose username\Public\Drop Box and save that connection. Delete the previous one. Now when you connect (using the same long name and password), the folder on the Windows desktop will be confined to the Drop Box folder of your account.

  • Sharing iTunes Library between Mac and PC

    Hello
I have a Windows PC at home and had a Dell laptop. I have my itunes library on an external hard drive. This worked perfectly since which ever machine I was on I had access to the same library. Recently my work upgraded my laptop to a Mac Book Pro with Snow Leopard. Is there a way to share this same library on my Mac? I am new to the Mac world and am a bit lost. Thanks in advance

I have a similar setup. You need to move your itunes library to your network storage device. You need to do this within itunes (you will have to google moving your itunes library because I don't remember all the steps). After you moved the itunes library to a network share, you need to go into advanced preferences on each computer that will access the library and set the location of the itune library to point to the network share folder where the file itunes library.itl is located - the exit from Itunes. Restart Itunes on each computer (pressing shift on the Windows computers and option on the Macs). You will then have to choose the Itunes library. Browse to the network share and click on the itunes library.itl folder.
Three notes. Only one computer at a time can access the library. Second, each time you switch back and forth between mac and pc, the library folder needs to be updated. Third, for some reason, with iTunes 9.0.2, the updating process has slowed down. It is especially slow taking 15 minutes or so for a 13GB library. Hope apple fixes this.

  • Sharing Files between Mac and Windows XP PC

I have an small office with three computers. There is a new Mac that basically acts as the server. There is a shared folder on the computer. The other 2 computers are PCs. All permissions have been set on the Mac. The other 2 users are set as Administrators on the Mac and have the ability to Read and Write. The other 2 users can access the files, but they are not able to make any changes. The shared folder has may sub folders. Any ideas?

huh, i used migration assistant to create a user with all my old data. now i have 2 users. anyway, i was putting the old data i wanted (i plan to wipe out the old user) into the shared folder...and it was working fine. all of a sudden, i put files into the shared folder, and when i log in as the new user, i can't use the file. won't give me access.
i've enabled file sharing, the files and folders are marked as shared, and well...it seems like file sharing is broken.
    ...ideas?

  • Sharing Files between Mac and PC over a Network

    Greetings,
I have recently made the switch to the Mac, and I have been so pleased with it ever since! I am getting married soon and my wife-to-be has a Windows XP desktop machine. I have been reading up on the different options on sharing files, and I want to ask if someone with experience can confirm what I think I have discovered.
    1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
    2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
Thank you for any help that you might offer.

    1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
You don't need Macdrive for sharing files over the network, macdrive is only needed for a PC to read a Mac formatted Hard drive that is directly connected to a PC i.e Firewire Drive.
    2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Yes you can write to a windows sharepoint on a mac this would be limited to their home folder unless you setup other permissions.
To setup windows sharepoints your best using a shareware utility called sharepoints
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
It does not matter what format hte pc drives are if your sharing over a network you only need to know about formatted drives if they are directly connected to the computer i.e firewire, or usb drives.

  • Sharing files between mac and windows

Hello, I have recently purchased a new mac computer and I would like to transfer files from my old windows computer onto this new one and vice versa. I have tried using an external hard drive to do this, but I found that it can only be formatted to one OS at one time. Does anybody have any ideas of how I can accomplish this? Thank you so much for your help everyone!

I'm not clear as to the current format of the drive. Since you say it is working with MacDrive I am assuming it is currently NTFS. You also say this is for a "new computer" so is this really a Leopard OS computer, making this a Leopard OS question? There's differences in the capabilities of the different systems.
As for MacDrive, if it works and it's the only program then you'll have to pay for it. I'd say if you're just using it this once for this one application you could probably buy a used drive for $50 to allow you to clear some files off the one you want to use and reformat it. Drives formatted to FAT32 can hold files up to 4GB in size and work with both Mac and Windows. Unless this is for video I don't see a severe restriction to reformatting to FAT32 and using that.

  • Best way to regularly share files between mac and pc?

    Hi
I'm starting uni this year and want to get all preppred and ready to go. Just wondering the best way I can go about sharing files between my iMac and the universities library computers (which I assume will be PC)?
I currently use Word for Mac 2008 but am considering upgrading to Word 2011 or Pages before I start classes and for file sharing I hear Evernote or iCloud are the best options but if all else fails, I'll probably just go with a simple USB.
    Currently Own:
    - iMac
    - iPhone 5
    - Word for Mac 2008
    Considering
    - Word for Mac 2011
    - Pages
    - Evernote
    - iCloud
    - USB
Let me know if you have any advice,
    Thanks

Not too sure what you mean, sorry... but I will try and explain a little further.
I'll be creating documents at school on a library PC computer, then wanting to access them at home on my iMac and vice versa.
I had the idea that I would be able to save them to a web-based file sharing site but I've since learnt Evernote has to be downloaded to both the public PC and personal iMac and that probably isn't possible.

  • Difference of links path between Mac and Windows

We currently use an InDesign Server solution on Mac to generate our PDF. InDesign files are created on Mac and our InDesign server points to volumes where are stored links. On Mac, the path looks like this:
    VOLUME:FOLDER_1:SUBFOLDER_1:SUBFOLDER_2:LINK_NAME.
We consider to migrate our InDesign server onto Windows. So I began some tests on a client version and the same InDesign file opened on Windows and whose links are stored in the same place opens with missing links as the path on Windows looks like this: volume_name\volume\FOLDER_1\SUBFOLDER_1\SUBFOLDER_2\LINK_NAME
So I have to relink manually, which is impossible in our workflow.
Does anyone know if we may encounter the same problem with a server version? If yes, do you know a script that automatically relink image files when InDesign files will be opened by InDesign Server?

I don't personally have much experience relinking across platforms. (We use Windows servers although I use Mac locally.) But, here's what info I can provide:
File paths in InDesign can be specified in 2 ways. One is platform-specific paths, and the second is URI notation. The URI notation is the same cross-platform, but even so, I imagine the volume names are different as well. Specifying the URIs in an InDesign file would prove to be challenging as well, although you can easily specify it in an IDML file.
Another avenue to explore would be to specify relative paths. By default InDesign writes absolute paths, but relative paths are supported. If I'm not mistaken, that's what the InDesign package functionality does.
Your best bet will probably be to run a script when the document loads on the machine for the first time and loop through all the links and change the paths to the correct location.

  • FLA files between Mac and PC versions of Flash CS3

Hello, I have a PC at work and a Mac at home and have found
that there are differences with font rendering in Flash CS3 on each
    operating system.
I have a Flash application that looks beautiful. However, the
same .FLA file will position fonts a few pixels differently on my
    mac.
For instance, I can make a flash file on my PC with perfectly
positioned fonts and after publishing, these fonts will look
perfect on both PC and Mac (from the SWF). If I then open the .FLA
on my Mac the fonts will be slightly off, and after publishing the
fonts will be off on both the PC and on Mac (from the SWF).
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Anyone got any
suggested workarounds or am I stuck?
This is the only major problem I've had going between the CS3
programs on my PC and my Mac (I mainly use Dreamweaver and Flash).
    Thanks for any help!

I have this same problem. Most fonts are vertically
misaligned after loading a PC-created FLA on a Mac, and vice versa.
OpenType fonts seem to have a greater baseline shift than Truetype
fonts. Arial is one of the few fonts that doesn't shift (that I've
tried). The direction of the shift is upwards from PC->Mac, and
downwards from Mac->PC. Also, the linespacing changes. On the
Mac the linespacing is reduced, so multiple lines get bunched
together. To see this issue, create a new document on either
platform and place some text. Draw a line at the baseline of the
text. Save and reload this file on the other platform.
If you make the text dynamic and click on "show border around
text," the problem gets a little more interesting. On the PC, all
text with ascenders and descenders appear firmly within the border.
On the Mac, the border excludes the ascenders on OpenType fonts, so
the text butts up right to the border and ascenders poke out the
top. This is a bug in its own right. I work primarily with Folio
fonts, and have seen this problem on all of the OpenType fonts I've
tried. On TrueType fonts I tend to see the bounding box "almost"
right, but it still just clips the ascenders, and causes a small
    baseline shift.
I think the baseline shift problem is because the Mac version
determines the bounding box incorrectly. When you place text using
the text cursor, it does it according to the font's baseline, which
is good. But I suspect Flash stores the position of the text in
terms of the upper left (or any other) corner of the bounding box.
Because the bounding box is calculated incorrectly (but
consistently) on a single platform, reloading the file within that
platform results in perfect positioning. Loading another platform's
FLA would cause a shift because the font's bounding box is
different -- it's the same position of the textfield, but the
displayed text relative to that store textfield position is higher
up on the Mac than on the PC.
This problem has really made me regret switching to the Mac.
have to do all my work inside Parallels now, on Flash CS3/Win,
because the artists and other Flash developers in the office are
all on PC. It is a total showstopper for me, and quite aggravating.
I simply can't check in my FLAs on the Mac side with my Mac
positioning, because it makes it impractical for anyone else to
    edit my work.
