Sharing m4a file to windows xp

I created a podcast that I would like to share with my daughter whose iTunes is on our PC/Windows Xp.
For the life of me I cannot figure out how to do this.
I'm fairly new to the Mac World and still getting the hand of things.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
The simplest way is to burn it to a CD/DVD then load that on the PC and drag the file into iTunes
The more complex way is to turn on Sharing on C: (right click/Get Properties/Sharing/Check Share)
On the Mac open System Preferences/Sharing and check File sharing and under Options check Samba
Then on the Mac Finder top menu bar Go/Connect to Server and enter smb://nameofPC
When the volume shows up drag the podcast across into the 'Temporary' folder
Run iTunes on the PC then drag the podcast into the iTunes window to Import it

  • Why can't JavaFx media player play .m4a file on windows xp sp3?

    Hi All
Why can't JavaFx media player play .m4a file on windows xp sp3? I got an exception that 'Decoder is not available' when I played m4a file on windows xp sp3(it didn't work on vista either), but it works fine on windows 7 , so I guess Javafx media player needs some system dependencies or resources when it plays media files, do you have any suggestions for this ?

To allow playback on Windows XP, you need to install the correct software in addition to JavaFX.
Once the system has been upgraded to meet the minimum requirements for playback of a particular type of video encoding, then playback should work fine.
See the JavaFX Media portion of the JavaFX 2.2 System Requirements:
    http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/system_requirements_2-2/jfxpub-system_requirements_2-2.htm
Note, m4a is just a container file and data streams inside the container format need to match a supported JavaFX format for playback to work:
    http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/api/javafx/scene/media/package-summary.html
    Some approaches you could take:
    - additionally encode the media in VP6 format and fallback to VP6 playback if H.264 playback fails.
    - use a 3rd party player like VLC.
    - don't bother supporting Windows XP video playback.
    - direct a browser to a divx install page if playback fails (http://www.divx.com/).

  • Using m4a files with window moviemaker

i'm new to itunes. I'm trying to use m4a audio files with windows moviemaker but could not. is there a way to change file ext or to download in mp3 form?
    thanks

Open the General section of the iTunes preferences, click the Import Settings button, change the default encoder to MP3, drag the songs into iTunes, right-click them, and convert them.

  • Showing the music properties of .M4A files in Windows Explorer

    Dear All,
You probably noticed that Windows Vista does not provide much information or integration for Apple's .m4a music files.
Would you like to see the music file properties for .m4a files in the columns and details pane of Windows Explorer? Would you like to see the Album Artwork in Windows Explorer? Would you like Windows to provide indexing and searching on your .m4a music files?
If so, then I have written a "Shell Extension" (add in) for Microsoft Windows Vista Explorer that does just that. See http://www.whitebear.ch/music for more details.

Yeah, I've heard that too, but I'm not buying that excuse:
It's not MicroSoft's responsibility for making someone's thumbnails work.  MS provides the documentation (I assume) for developers to write code for a DLL to display thumbnails in Windows Explorer.  It's up to the developer to do it.
Other software programs which use a proprietary image format do supply those DLLs.  Three examples that I use on my PC are:
        a.  Corel's CorelDraw and PhotoPaint install the appropriate shell DLLs to display their native files as thumbnails.
        b.  Xara also provides a 64-bit DLL which, when manually registered, displays their native file format as thumbnails.
        c.  The open-source Paint.Net group registers the DLL to display their native format as thumbnails.
God knows that those three, and especially the Paint.Net group, don't have the hundreds of millions of dollars and hundreds of developers that Adobe does, yet those three chose to do the right thing and provide what I consider to be an essential feature.
Apparently this has been going on for a long time -- certainly long enough for Adobe to write the darned code, if only Adobe had the will to do it.
PSE9 is the only Adobe product I currently have purchased and this issue just sticks in my craw.  Other than that, I've got nothing but praise for the program.

  • Problems with sharing InDesign files on Windows server

Hi there. We have four designers that are working with InDesign CS5 and InCopy CS5. Three of these designers are working on Macs running OSX 10.8. The other is working on a Windows 7 machine. All of their files are stored on a Windows Server 2008 R2 file server. The problem is that whenever one of them makes updates to some files in a project and they save it, the others are unable to checkout any assignments from within either InDesign or InCopy. When they try to checkout the files to make changes, they get the following error message: "In use by Unknown in Adobe InDesign from document <file name>.indd"
The strange thing is that their files used to be stored on a Server 2003 file server and they never had any problems. But since we moved them over to this Server 2008 R2 machine I can't help but wonder if it is a problem with the server. In either case, I wanted to ask this question in here to get any opinion on what this could be.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Stefano,
I got similar problems, any solutions for me?
    Thanks...

  • How do I have ONLY THE MINI PLAYER open when I click an Mp3 or M4a file? (Windows PC)

I don't want the entire iTunes interface opening when I just want to listen to a song. How do I go about setting iTunes to open in JUST the mini player?

Just to expand on Frank's answer: that's how Aperture works.  Stacks travel together.  You will see the same behavior regarding filtering in the Album that you see in the Project.  (Album is a container.  As with a Project, you can filter the Album container to show only items that meet your filter criteria, but the contents of the container don't change by being filtered.)
This is why Album picks are so useful.  In Projects, the Stack Pick is the left-most Image in the Stack, and is the Image that shows when the Stack is minimized.  In Albums, you can specify an Album Pick.  (The default Pick is the Stack Pick.)  When a Stack in an Album is collapsed, the Album Pick is the Image that shows on top.
    Added the following paragraph:
So you could have a Project with Stacks of bracketed exposures (an excellent use of Stacks), you could make the best of these the Pick, and then you could make an Album showing, say, the second best ones by putting them in an Album and designating the second-best Images as the Album Pick of each Stack.
You should have no trouble creating an Album of your selected Images (in this case, you are selecting by "is flagged").  With Stacks collapsed, you should see what you seem to want, which is a group of the Images you selected to be in the Album.
    denke wrote:
I want to make an album inside the project showing only the photos I uploaded, but I have not found how to do this.
That the rest of the Images in the Stack are there shouldn't be a concern.  Why is it?

  • How to delete duplicated m4a file in "Recently Added" List in iTues?

I followed the instructions given by WICLEE and managed to customize my Ringtone but I couldn't delete the duplicated m4a file (after created a AAC file) from the Recently Added list where i selected the music for downloading. However, i managed to delete the m4a file from Windows Explorer and uncheck the deuplicated file when i sync onto my iPhone5 as a new Ringtone, it worked.  Can Wiclee advise how to delete the unwanted m4a file from the list?  Thanks much.

It will disappear from the Recently added playlist after 2 weeks.
Or you can edit the Recently added playlist to include ONLY music.

  • Problem sharing file with windows 7

I am tring to set up pc with the new macbook air.
I can read/write files in Windows 7 from my macbook air. However, the reverse is giving me a headache.....(seriously)
In my macbook air, Preference->Network->Advance->Wins , I set the workgroup as WORKGROUP ( my windows 7 workgroup name)
Under the Wins servers, i've added ip address of my pc. (Tried both ways)
Also I check two boxes(AFP, SMB) in file sharing.
set my username to give full permission and none for "Everyone".
Now here is the problem. In my windows 7 pc, under the network, I can see my macbook appear. When I click, it is giving me a login pop-up. There, I've entered the login name of my macbook air, and password, but it kept giving me an error message that it is not the correct one.
I have no idea why this happening. The most bazzarre thing is that it sometimes is connected with the same setting. Can anyone please help me?
This is driving me for 3 days night and day.....
    Any comment/advise will be appreciated.
    thanks

Here's what I just did and my Windows 7 PC sees all the folders under my Mac user name.
I didn't touch anything in Network. It was already setup in the WINS tab for WORKGROUP.
I opened Sharing from System Preferences. Selected File Sharing and after a few seconds, shared folders (user name Public) and users showed up. Windows Sharing is ON. I clicked on Options, checked 'Shared Folders and Files using SMB (Windows)' and checked my user name under Account. It prompted me for my user password. If you look under 'Windows Sharing: On', you'll see this "Windows users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at \\192.168.1.xx." <--- internal IP address of your Mac.
Then, I went over to my Windows 7 PC and mapped a drive to my MacBook Pro's internal IP address. I was prompted for my userID and password which I filled in with my Mac logged in userID/password. All the folders under my Mac user account appeared and I am able to open them. This may be all you need to do. Map the Mac internal IP to a drive letter in Windows 7.

YEAAHH!! I did it! I just made a transfer of a .band folder from my PC to my iPhone through iExplorer!
    This was my steps
    1. Download iExplorer and install it. Connect your iPhone
    2. Find the folder "com.apple.mobilegarageband" in iExplorers browser
    3. Drag and drop your folder .band to the folder "Documents". (!! Your'e not done yet!)
    4. In GarageBand on your iPhone press the plus-button as you would start a new song. Choose "Copy from iTunes". Choose your imported song.
    5. Start rockin'
I've searched 5 hours to find this solution and man am I glad to finally have my songs back!!

  • .m4a files not 'working' on windows server

    Hey kids..
I use GoDaddy.com for my webhosting needs... and i recently switched my site from being hosted on a linux server to a windows one...
when i navigate to my .m4a podcasts now the links don't work, and i receive a 404 error. i know the files are there... they're present in the ftp window... and i know i'm not mistyping the file name becuase i host both and mp3 and m4a with the same file name.
also, if i change the m4a to have an mp4 extension, it works just fine. but if i update my RSS file to reflect the new file name, the iTunes subscriber sees duplicate episodes.
what can i do to keep using my m4a files?
PS> Itunes does not function with the m4a also...
    1.5Ghz Powerbook 15   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

I just spoke with godaddy and they told me "too bad".
Maybe it's time to find a different server?
The only issue now is that existing subscribers are seeing both the m4a and the mp3 episodes. Is there a way in the RSS podcast feed to force the iTunes subscription to clear its episodes and start over? or to only update the episodes if they aren't already downloaded...
Chris, there are two slightly different things here. What shows up in the iTMS is based on your feed. Once you change your feed, the iTMS will show the changes (you may need to ping the iTMS to force it to update).
For users who already subscribed to your feed, and have already downloaded files, what will happen in their iTunes Podcasting window is that all the old files will remain there, and the changed feed will show all the new files as well - but they will be grayed out with a "Get" button next to them.
So each episode will be duplicated in their list, the one they downloaded and a grayed out one which is the new one. iTunes is smart enough to not force a new download of all the new ones (fortunately).
basically hundreds of people are going to see duplicats in my cast and be saying '*** mang?'
Only the ones who already subscribed will see the duplicate listings, and after a while, they'll get used to it - or can hit "delete". The iTMS listing will not show duplicates (unless, of course, you keep duplicates in your feed).
Hope this answers your question, Chris.

  • Backup of JUST Windows partition (without shared Mac files) on a Mac

I have an iMac running OSX 10.4.10, using VMWare Fusion to run a small (10%) partition with some old but necessary Windows XP 5.1 applications. I want to use a 160 GB external hard drive (Fire Wire and USB both) with a small (10GB) partition to backup just the windows partition (FAT32 formatted) and the remainder (lions...tiger's share) for OSX backup.
I have finally gotten to the point that I can backup each operating system's files on their respective partitions on the same external drive, BUT the windows backup always EXCEEDS the 4GB max file size for the WIndows backup file in FAT32 format, BECAUSE Windows somehow backs up the OSX files ALSO (as "shared files").
Since I already backup the OSX files through OSX, I don't need windows to backup the Mac files. If it only backed up its OWN Windows partition, it would not exceed the FAT32 4GB limit.
I know I can hand-select files for Windows backup to get around this, but I am likely not backing up software and settings.
**What I am looking for is a simple, turn-key way to get a FULL backup of JUST the Windows partition. Can anyone help?

Take a look at the Mac freeware utility WinClone - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • I want to convert the MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a) to a window media audio file

i want to convert the MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a) to a window media audio file,  i downloaded some songs so i can run them with a photo slide show on my samsung video.  the machine would not play them (could not find them)  the files that work are all windows media audio

You can't convert to WMA with iTunes. I'd be surprised if the software can't read mp3 files. iTunes can convert to that. Otherwise there are free format converters out on the web. The suite from http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ is handy and includes an audio convertor. There is no need to install their toolbar or any other 3rd party software that gets offered.

  • Transfer a shared file from windows to mac

I need to get a file over to my MacBook that's on my Windows machine. I did it a while ago using sftp but I can't remember how I did it. The computer shows up under the Shared sidebar as family but then it asks me for a user name and password. What user name and password do they mean? I have no account passwords on the windows machine and it won't let me go in as a guest. Could anyone help me fix this.

You need to setup a shared folder on the windows machine with guest privileges. You can put that file in the shared folder and access it without a password from your Mac.

  • ITunes 10. Moved m4a files from ext harddrive to my new laptop

I had an older laptop with an external harddrive storing my music. That laptop since died and was repalced with a new one. looks like the files are m4a files on the harddrive. The iTunes 10 looks like it processes the files when I add that folder to the libary but I never see any music. The m4a files can not be played in windows media player or any other player I have downloaded. I did some research and it says the m4a files are unprotected. Many are just loads from my CDs (over 25,000 songs plus) a few was purchased from iTunes. I had several iTunes accounts for the home. One for movies, the parents and the kids. If these was created by various other accounts will that affect the ability to play? I don't see how as they all played on the older laptop. Music was also shared with a desktop and a Crestron media server. Thanks for any insite on this.

Assuming that you're using the same iTunes version on both and there is no music on your new laptop:
On your iBook just replace the folder "iTunes" and all its content in your user/Music directory with a copy of "iTunes" (all subfolder included) of your eMac.
