Sharing Mac and PC on same literal desktop

My new job is pretty much a “PC only” environment. However, since so much of my previous work is based on a Mac, they have agreed to let me have both a Mac and a PC. The company’s IT folks will only work with a PC, so Parallels or even Bootcamp are not options.
Given this, how may I best set-up a shared folder between the two systems? That is, can I connect a cable of some type (USB, Firewire, or Ethernet) between the two computers, so that any file I drag into this shared folder on the PC appears on the Mac and vv? I guess, worst-case scenario, I could e-mail files back and forth, but any ideas for options to share information between the two systems in a more seamless fashion would be greatly appreciated.
The two caveats are that I will likely not get any help from the department IT folks for set-up on the PC side, and my knowledge of networking and sharing on the Mac is not great; thus, any detailed advice or references would be really nice.
Thank you!

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Mac and Windows on same iTunes Library? NAS?

I moved my mac iTunes library to a NAS, hoping that all machines in the house (Mac and Windows) could access and update the library (but not at the same time because of file locking).  So I moved the .itl and .xml files over to the NAS as well but some machines can only see parts of the library.
Is this not a supported configuration?  How could I set up such a sharing library with update capability?  Thanks in advance.

You don't need any software installed on the windows PC. Just plug it into the Ethernet port on the router to the Ethernet port on the NIC card. If you want the Fios software installed go to activatemyfios.verizon.net and click configure another computer and enter your fios user name and password. If you are having connection problems go to verizon.com/connectionwizard and install that software.

  • Can I install CS6 for both Mac and PC with same license?

I have made my first installation to Mac and it's visible in my purchases. I tried to download CS6 to my PC but it didn't accept the same product serial number.
How can I install CS6 to PC also?

You can't. Standalone serial numbers are platform specific. Only Creative Cloud is cross-platform.

  • External drive sharing mac and pc

How can I format Seagate Hard Drive to allow photos to be viewed and copied from Mac and PC

If you only need the Mac to read from the drive, you can use either FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS.
If you need the Mac to be able to write to it, use FAT32 or exFAT.
If you're going to put an actual iPhoto library on the drive and not unorganized photos, you must use Mac OS Extended. This drive format isn't readable by Windows unless it has software such as MacDrive installed or the drive is being made available as a network share from a Mac or AirPort base station.

  • Mac and Pc Safai same?

If I were making a cd that contained a web site, would I be able to include a copy of Safari for the Mac and the PC on the disk so that persons could view the site on either platform?
In other words does Apple allow a person to incude a copy of Safari on a disk that you would have for sale?
Would it be hard to make a menu to allow a person to start the cd according to whether he/she had a Mac or a PC? I know the Mac operating system no longer supports autorun.
Since there is no autorun anymore what happens when you put a disk into your Mac computer? Does something pop uop onto the screen?
    Thanks in advance

Safari on both Mac OS X and Windows requires that system-level components be installed. You're probably better off by using the standard or portable Mac OS X Firefox dmg file and the portable Firefox for Windows.
Since there is no autorun anymore what happens when you put a disk into your Mac computer? Does something pop uop onto the screen?
Either a window will appear, or nothing at all other than the disk's icon. You may be able to control which window by creating a dmg on the Mac, setting it up as desired, and then making a CD from it.

  • Screen sharing Mac and PC?

I am on a LAN and i want to know if you could share the Mac's screen with another PC. If the macbookpro is ON and opened up could i control or see its screen from another PC o the network? If yes, how?

OSX's Screen Sharing is based on the VNC protocol.  So on paper, any VNC client should work.  In reality, some VNC clients work better than others.  And the way Apple implemented Screen Sharing in Lion "broke" some of the PC VNC clients.  So try a several different VNC client on your PC to see which works best for you.
Me personally, I still use the original AT&T VNC client, which is really old, hasn't been updated in years (but still works on Windows 7,) and doesn't have many features that have been added on by other vendors.  But that lack of add-ons I belive are why I seem to have very few problems with connecting from my Windows PC.  YMMV, of course.

  • Currently using Lightroom 5 as a standalone on a mac and two windows machines one desktop one laptop. with CC can i still use all the machines or do i have to take out an individual license for each?

with CC can i still use all the machines or do i have to take out an individual license for each?

Your LR5 license allows for activated installations on two machines.  Of those two machine, only one can be using the licensed software at a given time.  The same applies with CC, except with CC you won't be able to sneak in the third machine.  What you can do though with CC is have it installed on all three and sign in and out of the different machines as needed.
If you intend to be using all three machines at the same time then you do need three separate licenses/subscriptions to be in compliance with the license agreement.

  • Mac and Windows on Same System. Having glitches. Help!

Hello, I have my laptop set up to a router with the main computer being a Mac.  It basically works fine, but I have been noticing some glitches especially in trying to play media, such as YouTube files and other streaming videos.  I can never get them to play at the right speed, even though I have it set to automatic.  Do I need to set this differently?  I also cannot print PDF files, have tried just about anything, but that may have nothing to do with FIOS.
When we set it up, it was just configured to my system, with the network code and I downloaded the network adapters.  It looks like there is another step here -- configure Windows with either the info from a flash drive or a disc, according to the Verizon website.  But, how can I configue Windows if the main system is a Mac.  Confused.  Thanks for any info.

  • Licensing Acrobat Pro Mac and Windows on same Mac

I have a large number Macs in our business running Creative Suite 6. A number of those operators also have a need to run LiveCycle Designer, which is a Windows only product. At present we buy addtional 4 GB RAM, VMWare Fusion and a Windows 7 licence in addition to purchasing a standalone copy of Acrobat for Windows. Is it really necessary for us to buy an additional licence for Windows Acrobat or would we be OK utilising the existing Mac Acrobat Pro licence?

If you're buying the perpetual license version of Creative Suite 6, you would have to buy separate licenses for Macintosh and Windows versions. If you're getting Creative Suite 6 through your subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud, you can mix your two eligible copies, and download both Windows and Mac versions.

  • HT2688 are home sharing macs and pcs peers?

It's a zero configuration networking set-up (via Apple's Bonjour implementation).

  • HT4623 I have error 1669 coming up just before the phone is to restore, have tried multiple computers including macs and still the same

help error 1669 tried it all

    Hello, paulmonkey.
Error 1669 can be similar to error 1.  Try the troubleshooting steps for error one as outlined below.
    Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the alert when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
    Common errors: 1, 10-47, 1002, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1000-1020.

  • How can multiple Mac users have the same iTunes?

I have a MacBook, and my wife and I have separate accounts on it. It's easier that way for separate Facebook accounts, email, etc. However, it's complicated when it comes to iTunes and applications. We both want to use the same iTunes library. We have iTunes Match, but I'd rather not re-download my entire library when it's already on my computer just so we both have access to it. I tried following the directions at this article, but it didn't work. So, how can both my wife and I, from different accounts on the same Mac (and using the same Apple ID) access the same iTunes library and have any changes reflected on both accounts?

Obviously, if you just need to copy those iTunes folders, you don't need the ability to write; just the ability to read, which you already have.
Besides, the /Users/Shared folder is indeed an excellent location for a shared iTunes library; I hadn't yet considered that. Ignore all the above instructions. First, make sure your two iTunes libraries are in sync. Use an external hard drive (or mess with permissions) to do what copying you need to. Then go into iTunes and iTunes>Preferences...>Advanced and change the iTunes Media folder location to /Users/Shared. All of your iTunes content should be copied (or moved) into /Users/Shared.
After that, do the same thing in the other account, and both your iTunes libraries will now be pointed to the same location.

  • I am switching from a pc to mac and want to know how I go about transferring files from one to the other.  There is a chance that I will have to hand my pc back before I receive my MacBook so I will need to transfer on to some sort of external hard drive.

I am switching from an acer laptop to a MacBook Pro.  I may have to hand in my laptop before I receive my new MacBook. What is the best way to back up my files so that I can transfer them to my MacBook.  I cloud cannot be installed on my laptop because it uses a version of windows that is older and doesn't support it.  Hope someone can help.

Connect a blank powered external drive to the PC.
Right click on the Disk in the File manager and choose format: exFAT
(if it's a XP machine, first install exFAT from Microsoft and reboot)
navigate to your user account folders on the PC and drag and drop copy (or copy and paste) to the external drive.
(if a program has your files, then export them out first)
Hook up the drive to the Mac, and transfer files to the desktop or to their same appropritate folders.
Import photo's into iPhoto program, import music into iTunes etc and they will manage those files.
You can continue to use the external exFAT drive between Mac's and PC's
Do not format the drive NTFS or FAT, NTFS can't be written too by the Mac and FAT can't hold over 4GB sized files.
If you format exFAT on the Mac, it likely won't work correctly on the  PC.
"Migration" type programs are a utter waste of time and effort between PC's and Mac's for the fact that only certain files (and no programs or anything else) will work between them, also it's a hassle and takes too long. So don't even bother with it.
