Sharing Mac internet with XP via Ethernet

Hi
I'm having problems sharing a MAC internet connection with windows
I've done, successfully:
Internet <--> XP <--> MAC
but now I want to do:
Internet <--> MAC <--> XP
Is there a simple guide somewhere?

On the PC in a browser try http://17.254.0.91
Doesn't find the MAC site - hangs
How is the Mac connecting to the internet (ethernet
for example), how are you trying to share it (airport
for example).
Mac connects USB Speedtouch USB ADSL modem
Sharing via ethernet connection 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 - firewalled
Firewall on MAC and XP switched on - even with XP Fw switched off it doesn't work. XP = 192.168.2.2 via Gateway of 198.168.2.1 255.255.255.0

  • No internet with Safari via ethernet, but it works via wifi

Both Safari and Software update cannot connect to internet via ehternet, although both Firefox and Terminal have connection. However, both of them work via wifi.

Have you verified your built-in ethernet settings? Most of the time all you need to do is select "Configure using DHCP" unless there are any special settings used in your location.

  • I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

  • Connect mac with tc via ethernet for tm backups

    Hi,
I know there's probably already an answer to this question, but I just can't find it.
I normally connect to my time capsule via wifi, but I've been on holiday and made no backups, so now it would take ages. that's why I'd like to do it via ethernet.
If I plug the ethernet cable into the tc and the macbook, I can see the connection in the network setup, but it still does the backup via wifi. And if I turn the wifi of, the time capsule connection is gone.
I already managed to change the setting of the time capsule to ethernet once, but that was under the old airport version. With the airport 6.0 and higher, I don't know how to do this.

Don't touch the existing utility.. just install the new one.. both will list in utilities folder.. only start the one you want.

How is the TC connected to the main router?? That is more important.. but it sounds like you have it connected correctly by ethernet.

  • Mac/Apple TV Connectivity via ethernet connection problems

I am having a connectivity issue with my Mac and Apple TV. I am connected to the internet via cable modem and ethernet lines. I have my Mac, Apple TV and cable modem all connected via a Netgear 5-port ethernet switch (10/100 Mbps). I am able to connect to the iTunes store (internet) with either my Mac or Apple TV by unplugging my cable modem and reconnecting with one device "on", but in order to switch from Mac to Apple TV (or vice versa) it is necessary to sleep the one device, and reconnect with the other. I am unable to communicate from the Apple TV to my Mac iTunes without a direct ethernet cable between them.
I suspect there's something in the system preferences that I'm not doing. All devices seem to work OK in isolation but not together.
    Any ideas?

    cuatro,
    welcome to discussions.
Your issue is with the Netgear switch. It needs to be a router and also provide DHCP and NAT. It might be able to do this by re-configuring. In fact, as you describe it as a 5-port switch, it's very likely that one port is on the WAN side (internet) and the other four are LAN side (local). Which model switch is it ?
The issue start with the cable modem, which will only provide one Ethernet port and one IP address to access the internet. Your Netgear should really then put up a firewall and provide up to 4 local IP addresses (a LAN) for sharing access to the internet. It looks like it's not doing this, but just sharing the one IP address (supplied by your cable ISP) amongst all the attached devices. This can be a nightmare, as you are finding out.
Let us know about the Netgear and we can help.
Just in case the Netgear is unable to do what we want it to, does your G5 have more than one Ethernet port ? Is it physically possible to connect the cable modem directly to the G5 ? (are the cables long enough?) Is it physically possible then to connect the AppleTV to the G5 ? If not directly, then via the Netgear ?
It may be that you will have to spend about £30 on a router with firewall / DHCP / NAT / etc, or £40-£50 on a top-of-the-range wireless-n router, which your AppleTV will love. I'm almost certain that your existing Netgear is sufficient though.

  • Kernel Panic with AirDisk via Ethernet

Still conducting testing ... but I am getting sporadic Kernel Panics when my iMac is connected via ethernet. Seems to occur most with big files or multiple files. Seems ok with wireless, not sure if it could also be cable .. but anybody who is using AEBs should look out for this.

I think your issue is in the low percentage category.

  • Help with extending via ethernet

Having a bit of trouble using my new AirPort Express to extend my Time Capsule (ac) network via ethernet.
I've got the TC at at one side of my house (Point A) and the Express on the opposite side (Point B).  A patch cable is connected from the Ethernet port on the TC to the WAN port on the Express.
The Express is set up to "Create a wireless network" with the exact same settings at my TC.  The Express is also in Bridge Mode.
    Here's the issue:
If I turn on my iPhone 5 at Point B, I am connected to the Express unit, no problem.  If I then walk over to where the TC is at Point A, I am asked to enter a password for the wireless.  I enter it, and it doesn't accept it and just asks again.  After a few minutes, the iPhone then connects to the TC.  Is there any way to make this transition from TC<->Express seamless?

Just a quick update, I just did a walkthrough holding my MacBook Pro and the transition was seamless, so I guess it's just the iPhone 5 that's screwed up.

  • Sharing internet with 2 USB ethernet adapters?

Is it possible to connect the MBA via one USB Ethernet adapter to a LAN and share it with another USB adapter? Basically internet sharing from wired to wired.

...but the only way to know for sure...is to buy a 2nd USB Ethernet adapter which is a waste of money if it doesn't work
I didn't bring it up in the previous post, but since the discussion is going to continue...I would argue that getting a second USB wired ethernet adapter is a "waste of money." Why not get a router? OSX's Internet Sharing turns the Mac into a NAT device. This is the primary function of a typical home router. For about the same price as (or only a few dollars more than) the Apple USB ethernet adapter, you can get a router which will probably provide better throughput performance than Internet Sharing, especially if the machine you're sharing to is doing a heavy download, it likely slow down your machine even if you're not doing anything on the internet. (e.g.: Your Word Processing may will slow down if the other computer starts streaming Netflix.)
You can get small routers, if portability is needed and the 4-port wired switch is not essential. (i.e.: the Macbook has built-in wireless, as does most if not all portable computers.) I got one from D-Link that is the size of a deck of cards and runs off a USB port so no AC power is needed (although an AC adapter is included.) And of course Apple has the Airport Express.
To put it another way: you got a Macbook Air, which doesn't have any wired ethernet ports, but now you want two, and will use up all of your USB ports to do so. One could argue that you got the "wrong computer" for your needs. And even then, I would argue that a router is the "correct computer" to share one wired network connection.
Or can you make the defense and show significant negatives to using a router in your use case. And you have to go beyond price because a wired router is around $50 and often goes on sale for as low as $30, the same as the Apple USB ethernet adapter. And a wireless router is in the $70 range, with sale prices going down to $50. So I argue that a router is a better value.
(edit: for that matter, I forgot to ask, what kind of network connection are you trying to share? If it's like a university or other LAN where you can obtain more than one IP address, then you don't even need a router. A simple hub/switch will do, which I've seen on sale as low as $10, and free when people throw away their old junk. Hmmm, the price of the router could now be $0 if you have a friend that is upgrading their router to 802.11n. )

  • Can't share internet with iPhone4 via Airport with MacBook Pro on Ethernet

I'm in Iraq being abused by a criminal ISP offering 256K (yes, kilobytes per second!) connectivity via a cat IV ethernet cable to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.9). I have a first-gen iPhone4 (16G, version 4.2.1), it will not connect to the internet via airport to my MacBook.  I'm getting a good wi-fi symbol on my iPhone, the Airport is correctly finding my MacBook's network, and it properly demands/accepts my WEP password.  But I cannot get mail, go on line or use any apps.
Under the DHCP tab on my MacBook's network on the iPhone's Settings/Wi-Fi page...I have a good IP Address and Subnet Mask.  Previously I've also had numbers show up on the Router and DNS lines as well...but they are now blank.  I have never had numbers on the Search Domains or Client ID lines.
Can anyone tell me what's missing to get my internet sharing working?
    Thanks!

OK, on your iPhone you have four fields that need to completed for any type of WiFi networking to operate.  The fields are (in order) the IP address of your device, the subnet mask for your network, the "router" IP address, and finally the DNS addresses.
I'm not sure what these numbers look like on an ad hoc network, but a typical router based network would look like:
Device IP:  192.168.1.x with x being between 2 and 255
    Subnet mask:  255.255.255.0
    "Router IP":  192.168.1.1
DNS:  usually a pair of IP address separated by a comma.  Sometimes this is supplied by the network you are conneccted to, other times you specify an address (like OpenDNS or Google's DNS service)
If your phone has an IP address of 169.x.x.x, it means that your ad hoc network is not supplying it with an IP address.  Make sure that the DHCP box is checked (the ad hoc network will assign an IP address) or manually assign IP address.
To be honest with you, I'd go out and buy a basic N router (about $40 US), plug it in to your ethernet connection, and connect your devices to that.  You get far better security as the router has a firewall and you can use WPA2-AES encryption on the wireless side - and it is easier to set up.

  • Internet Sharing - Mobile Broadband to Vista via Ethernet

    Hi,
I am connected to the web via a USB mobile broadband dongle (HUAWEI). I have an external IP address that I can see via websites, but the USB dongle actually reports via System Preferences a private address (normally 10.5x.x.x). Not a problem so far, the net works and all is good.
I now wish to share this connection over ethernet with a Windows Vista machine over ethernet, but am having problems. I turn Internet Sharing on set to share connection from "HUAWEI Mobile" to computers using "Ethernet".
The Windows machine gets an IP address (in the 192.168.2.x range), and can ping me, and I can ping that machine. The Vista machine can even use DNS ok, but it cannot ping any internet IP, nor connect via HTTP or SSH to the outside world.
If I share the internet via Airport, my iPhone can pick it up and use it to access the internet just fine.
My Firewall is set to allow all incoming connection. In Network, I have tried ethernet as set to DHCP (it gets a self assigned IP in 169 range, and ifconfig also reports the 192 IP) and turned off, with no difference.
Any suggestions? Either a solution or some tests I could try to narrow in on the problem.
On a sidenote - is it normal for Internet Sharing to use two different private address ranges for sharing via different connections? Over Airport it uses the 10.x.x.x range and over ethernet the 192.x.x.x range. Can I change this somewhere?
    Many thanks in advance!

my iMac unfortunately is running 10.6.8

  • Sharing Internet with others via AirPort Extreme

    Hello!!
I really hope that someone can help me with this!
I have Air Port Extreme in my Mac Pro and I recently set it up so that my girlfriend who has a laptop PC can share my internet connection. My concern is now that anyone in our building can use my connection, right? I've heard something about passwords and things like that. Something about wep passord...
Can someone tell me how I get a password so that not anybody in our building can use our connection?
I really hope to get an answer on this one!!
    Cheerz!!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   With built in Air Port Extreme

Plug the external hard drive into one of your stationary Macs. On that Mac go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing.
Now you should be able to access that drive from any of your other Macs.

  • Trouble sharing mac internet to linux server over ethernet

Hi. I turned on internet sharing over ethernet to my linux server which is a dell poweredge. I went into network and at first it had a self assigned IP. Then I manually changed it to the correct subnet and the same IP address as my mac. Since I know the gateway is 192.168.1.1 and my mac is 192.168.1.5 ! I realize that the IP address is taken but I didnt know since they share the internet connection and I didnt know wether to assign a completely new IP address or keep the same one as the mac. Thanks

IP address of my mac connection to the base station is 10.0.1.5, 255.255.255.0 subnet, router (Default gateway) address is 10.0.1.1
IP address of my iMac's ethernet going to the switch is 10.0.1.10, 255.255.255.0 Subnet. "Router: 10.0.1.1"
    There's your problem.
You have the SAME subnet for both interfaces on the iMac. This is not valid, and will prevent internet sharing from working
Each interface has to be in a different subnet. If your wireless link is using 10.0.1.x/255.255.255.0 then your wired interface has to use something different. Choose either something else in the 10.x.x.x range (e.g. 10.1.1.x/255.255.255.0), or something completely different (e.g. 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0).
Your PC will need to have an IP address in the same subnet as the iMac's wired interface and its gateway address should be the address set for the iMac's wired interface.

  • Sharing the Internet with Macs and PCs

    Hi there.
I have a brand new Airport Extreme router working fantastically with my iMac. My roommate is on a PC and has a d-link DWA 130 USB wireless network adapter. I have a broadband cable connection set up via DHCP. If the network is set up without a password (as it is when you first connect the base to the modem), she can connect to the network without any issues.
When I set up the network with a WEP password to keep the connection from being public, she can still see the network in the d-link connection manager. She will then input the correct password but nothing will happen. In short, when I secure our connection, she gets hosed.
My question is, what can I do to solve this problem? I've tried everything on her end (I think). Is there a setting or two I should be concerned with on my end?
    Thanks, and take it easy

If possible use WPA instead of WEP. That is more secure and is more compatible among devices.
If the D-Link adapter isn't WPA compatible, you may need the WEP equivalent network password. See KB 106864, AirPort Extreme: Getting an equivalent network password.

  • Sharing 802.1x wifi connection via ethernet (to PS3 for example) - workarounds?

The situation is this: my university network is 802.1x wireless, and I need to share the connection over Ethernet to a device that isn't compatible with 802.1x wireless. When I try to do this, Mavericks comes up with a message saying:
Your Internet connection cannot be shared because it is protected by 802.1X.
Now, the workaround that the IT dept has given me is this:
Open apple script editor and paste everything between the lines below into a new file:
    ===================================================================
    try
do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1" with administrator privileges
do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/natd -interface en1 -dynamic" with administrator privileges
do shell script "sudo /sbin/ipfw add divert natd all from any to any via en1" with administrator privileges
    end try
    ===================================================================
Click on the compile button to make sure there are no errors. Then click on File and Export. Change the File Format to Application. Then click save.
Run the file you have just saved by double clicking on it. You will be prompted for your Mac username and password.
It's not working however. Any thoughts? Anything that I could change?

Thanks for the video, definitely helpful. I followed the steps exactly, but I can only get to the "Test Internet" connection section and it fails.
The Xbox passes the Network section of the test, but the test fails after that.

  • Can't connect to the internet with Airport OR ethernet cable

I know many other people are having problems with airport not being able to connect to the internet. I've never had any problems with my mac before, but 2 days ago, it started to act really funny. When i turned it on, my time and date were changed to Jan. 1, 2000, and I kept on getting notifications about configd and mdnsresponder wanting to connect to the internet. I did a little research and fixed that problem. Then, a few days ago, my internet was dropped from my computer completely, and I've never been able to connect via airport since.
The main problem is that even when I plug the ethernet cable into my mac, I can't connect to the internet either. It worked a few days ago, but now my computer can't even connect. It registers that the cable is in the computer, but thats' about it. The Network Diagnostics assistant tells me to restart themodem, and that hasn't been helping at all. Any helpwould be appreciated.

First Reset your Pram to see if resets you clock (the different Date caused the problems. Plus open System Preferences->Date & Time pane. In there make sure you set the current date/time and se if you can have the Mac automatically update the time from a Time Server.
