Sharing Mac's across a BT Home Hub network

I had a problem with this today and saw that this has been asked before with no answer available, and that topic has been closed.
The original poster had problems connecting macs across his BT Home Hub network.
I went into advanced settings on the BT home hub router and changed the wireless config to use 802.11b/g instead of the default 802.11b/g/n. Apply and reboot the router. This now allows macs to connect to each other wirelessly.
Hope this helps someone.

No joy I'm afraid.
Tried this on both mac's and once again it timed out…
Could it be a home hub setting?
Just wanted to check to see if anyone else had this problem before I spend 3 hours speaking to some dude with no knowledge of apple in an indian call centre!

I have today commissioned my black Home Hub to my Mac and it is working perfectly.  But my son has a PC laptop (Vista) and wants to connect to the internet using my Home Hub whilst my Mac is still connected.  I am sure this is possible but I don't know how to achieve this without affecting my own wired connection.  We tried to connect by entering my wireless key but all it said on his laptop was "the settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."  I previously had a Netgear router that he was able to log into with another ISP, but should this affect a new connection on his laptop?  Basically is it his laptop or my hub that's the problem? Hope someone can help.

To connect wirelessly you would need just one wireless access point like the home hub, the 220v does not have the wireless facility. You would only need one wireless router on your set up.
To connect wireless just have a check out at This link it shows how to connect most type of BT routers, for You need no special programs for an apple, as long as you have airport on the MAC as that is what is used to connect wirelessly

  • Mac won't connect to home hub

I am trying to connect my MacBook pro to my bt home hub but despite entering the correct password I am told I have no Internet connection. The wifi sign in system preferences is orange, and says I have a self assigned ip address. The hub is working on other devices in the house. I have tried both apple and bt and neither can help!!

  • How to add another router to Home Hub network.

    Hi,
Hope someone can help.  Here's the problem.
I have a Home Hub downstairs, which is working fine.
I want to put a desktop computer, which doesn't have wireless, upstairs, in a room which I can't get an ethernet cable to easily (we have vinyl floors, due to an allergy problem, therefore no carpets to run cables under).
I have a spare NetGear DGN2000 router, which says that it can be used as a wireless repeater.
I would like to use the spare router as a bridge or access point, linking wirelessly to the Home Hub, to enable me to connect the desktop via ethernet, and to improve wireless coverage upstairs.  I know I could use Homeplugs to get the broadband connection upstairs, but I have the router sitting around doing nothing, so would like to make use of it.
I have a couple of laptops running Vista, the desktop is on XP.
I am fairly IT & network literate, but have looked at the settings and spent ages googling this without finding a clear solution.
    Can someone please help?
    Many thanks,
    Gringo

Just be aware that bridging your two routers wirelessly will effectivly half your throughput!
It would be better to connect the two via cable and have the second acting as a standalone WAP.
I know u said cable runs are a problem but maybe have the second router in the landing or at the top of the stairs?
When using my homehub to do just this i had to buy a second router (netgear) to ask as a promary router (DHCP / DNS etc) and used the HH as WAP.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

  • Binned BT and want to use Time Capsule instead of BT Home Hub

This is my first question so please be gentle with me and forgive any errors!
After a truly horrendous experience with BT (22 calls to them in two weeks to resolve broadband speed of 0.4 mbps and no that's not a typo) I've changed ISP.
I already had a Time Capsule which previously I've used only as back up facility. Now I have a separate cable modem and want to use the Time Capsule as a router. The cable modem is plugged in to the phone line (with a filter) and there's an ethernet cable connecting it to the Time Capsule.
I thought I could bin my hated BT Home Hub, but the minute I unplug it, the set up doesn't work.
So it would seem that my Mac is talking to the Home Hub, that's talking to the TC and that's how I'm getting onto the net. I'm at a loss what I need to do to be able to throw the Home Hub in a skip.
Would greatly appreciate any advice as this is frying my tiny brain!
    Thanks in advance.
Macbook Pro, iPad 2, iPhone 4, Time Capsule

There are some issues here.. if your modem is plugged into the phone line it is adsl not cable modem..
The TC is not a modem.. it is a router.. you still need a modem to provide connection. Ask your new ISP for what their preferred modem is.. In the UK most ISP use PPPoA method of authenticaiton.. The TC cannot handle that.. they only offer dhcp to an existing router or PPPoE. That means the TC needs to be bridged. If the BT home hub is now running fast though, a new modem is not going to make the connection go faster.

  • File sharing problem on home wifi network.

I am trying to get file sharing to work but its failing.
This is between 2 macs running mavericks on a home wifi network.
On my "sharing" computer I have set up file sharing in preferences.
Selected the folders and allowed access to everyone.
On the other computer I am using to look at shared files.
I open finder, goto network, I see the icon for the other computer.
I click on it and I get connection failed each time.
I have tried both ways, tried restarting etc.
    Each time the same problem.
    Any ideas please ?
    thanks

I've spent the past month fighting a similar problem and Apple Support was no help.  In my case, I could usually connect successfully IF the "sharing" computer was awake but I could never connect after it went to sleep.  After much frustration, I decided on a shotgun approach and tried every configuration combination that I could think of.  I found one combination that works reliably for me.  It's illogical and also completely contradicts Apple's instructions but results count.
In my case, I wanted to use my MacBook Pro (with Mavericks) to access files on my iMac (with Mavericks).
No clue if my solution will work for you but there's no harm in trying.
Go to your "sharing" computer and confirm that file sharing is "on" and DELETE all folders from the shared folders box.  That box should be totally blank.
Just below the "File Sharing: On" verbiage, jot down the address associated with the afp and smb commands.  It's 10.0.1.7 in my case, which I'll use in my example below.  If you don't see "afp" AND "smb" in that verbiage, go to Options and turn both command languages "on."
Go to the other computer and use "Go > Connect to Server" and enter smb://10.0.1.7 as the server address.  Of course, use your address instead of my 10.0.1.7.  Be patient.  Depending on whether or not my iMac is sleeping, a connection can take as long as twenty or thirty seconds.
Post back with results.  I'd like to know if this works for anyone else.
    Edit...
I just noticed your signature.  If you're really at 10.9.1, you might want to first update to 10.9.2.

  • I am trying to connect my new ipad to my BT Home Hub but keep getting the message unable to join the network, Any advice?

I am trying to connect my new ipad to my BT Home Hub but keep getting a message saying that I am unable to join the Home Hub network.  Any advice?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • BT Home Hub and Airport Express Issues

    Hello all
I am having major issues setting up my airport express to my home hub and also setting up Time Capsule to join my wireless network...
I really need a step by step guide if possible.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks
    PC

    Welcome to the discussions!
You told us that you were having "major issues", but did not tell us specifically how you are trying to configure the AirPort Express, or what service you want it to perfrom on your Home Hub network, so providing a step by step guide is not possible without a bit more information.
Can you clarify on this, please?
In regards to configuring your Time Capsule to "join" the Home Hub wireless network, do you understand that the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled in this type of configuration, so you will not have the option to back up large files or make initial backups using an ethernet connection?
In order for the Time Capsule to "join" the wireless network provided by the Home Hub router, you willl need to know (or be able to locate) the exact type of wireless security settings that your Home Hub is using. The Time Capsule must be provided with this information in order for it to "join" the wireless network successfully.
Can you provide this information, or if you do not know, check with your service provider to obtain this information? We cannot proceed with the configuration until we have this information.
If you are able to locate the Time Capule near your Home Hub and establish a permanent ethernet connection between the Home Hub and Time Capsule, you will be able to backup using the Home Hub wireless network and also have the option to backup using ethernet if you wish. In addition, this type of installation is much simpler to configure (and more reliable in operation in my experience) and we would not need to know the type of wireless security that the Home Hub uses if you choose this setup option.
Please post back when you have an opportunity.

  • BT Home Hub 3 + Back To My Mac / Port Forwarding

I've recently got BT Infinity and along with it a BT Home Hub 3 which doesn't seem to be playing nicely with Back to my Mac.
The setup on the Mac side of things is correct and I can see my remote computer but I just can't connect to them, or vice versa. The Back to My Mac preference is showing that the router needs configuring for better performance.
I've ensured UPnP is enabled and forwarded the following ports to the device:
    TCP 5354
    UDP 4500
    UDP 5353
    UDP 500
    UDP/TCP 4488
Which I found listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
After doing some checks on these ports using http://canyouseeme.org it would seem that only one of these ports is open, and even then it's occassional.
BT seem to state on http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12529/~/why-do-i-get-an-error-message-when-using-appl... that 'Back to My Mac' isn't compatible and this is due to a compatibility issue on Apple's part. Frustratingly this article doesn't indicate a date when this was posted. Never the less, I would presume this could only be UPnP related — i.e. the necessary ports won't open automatically. I'm unsure of what other compatibility issues there would be. If the ports are open it should work fine.
I've read numerous threads in many forums about the BT Home Hub 3 port forwarding not working correctly, is this still true? If so, surely the device should be deemed faulty or a firmware update should have been put in place by now to resolve this. I can't seem to find any recent articles regarding this.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • USB External drive for PC & Mac Via Home Hub 2

    Hi Guys,
I have a home hub 2.0, I also have a 1TB External USB drive, I have connected the drive to the USB port on my Hub and I can see the drive on my pc, wirelessly (Windows 7), I know nothing abouy MAC's, but my wife has one and it would be great if we can both use the same drive, I think I will need to reformet the drive when it is plugged into her MAC into some MAC Format (?), I am happy to do that, but will both my PC and her MAC be able to access the drive?
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi steve,
As nobody else has posted I've decided to step in with a bit of advice, limited though it may be on Mac's
You can map your network drive to the Mac as well as your PC; I don't think there's a specific file format you need to have your hard drive formatted to although I've read reports of Mac's having problems with NTFS - FAT32 apparently works fine. The link below should help you map the drive to your Mac - as far as I'm aware, the IP address assigned to the USB slot on the Homehub is 192.168.1.253, so enter this when prompted for an address/location.
    http://osxdaily.com/2010/09/20/map-a-network-drive-on-a-mac/
Give this a go and get back to us to let us know how you get on, it might prove useful for other users (if it actually does work!).

  • Cant find Mac address BBT Hom Hub 2.0

Hi, I have my NAS severe connected directly to my HH.
Everything has worked fine for months, I had port forwarded some ports on the router so that I could access  my Nas externally.
All of a sudden, ports are blocked and I cannot find my NAS device on the router, it is connected and I can connect via LAN.
Not sure waht to do because  the Nas dvice Mac address does not show up in the device list or in DHCP list.
    thanks

    Go to Solution.

Your NAS really needs to be given a static IP address, as DHCP tends to stop working after a while, as the home hubs DHCP table fills up to capacity.
    These pages should help.

  • Mac address cloning / BT Home Hub 5

I have Infinity 2 package with BT Home Hub 5.
I recently bought Asus AC3200 and would like to use it as a main wired/wireless router in the house.
I don't want to have an extra routing hope, so I thought to setup Mac address cloning, so AC3200's broadband interface has the same MAC as BT Home Hub.
    Is it possible ?
Where can I find MAC address of BT Home Hub 5 broadband interface ?

Are you trying to connect a 2nd router to the phone line at the same time? If so it won't work. If not why are u trying to clone the mac address? You can only have the same Mac address once within the same network. Arp cannot understand multiple devices with the same Mac address. You can only have a mac address known to one device. Multiple IP addresses can map to the same Mac address but you cannot map the same IP address to multiple Mac addresses.
