Sharing macintosh HD  on macbook pro

i am trying to setup "direct digital filing" on my HP all in one printer/scanner. works fine with my pc but when i try to scan to the folder on my macbook pro i am told the drive is full or the folder is protected. i have plenty of space and have unprotected everything in the path except the HD.
when i attempt to update the permissions for the HD, i am told the operation cannot be completed because some of the data on the HD could not be read or written. error code -36
any ideas about what this might mean? sharing works fine in other programs. why does it think the folder is still protected?

Careful about changing the Permissions on the HD, you could make it unbootable if successful.
-36 generally is an smb error...

  • File Sharing between Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac OS 8.6 Powerbook 1400

well ok, for some this might sound ridicule. Why should I still be using a 13 year old PowerBook. Let me tell you, this is writing/typing heaven, Zen-like; no distractions at all, no twitter, no internet (although possible), no emails just pure you and your text and if you spin down the HDD, absolute silence. as said before pure Zen writing heaven. and on top of that you're typing on the best keyboard ever on a laptop.
As you might see I love my vintage masterpiece of a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Just one Problem.
Since I Installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 17" I just haven't been able to establish a connection between the two machines.
I have to admit, I'm not that versed with OS 8.6 but with 10.5 I had absolutely no problems accessing the shared folders on my MacBook Pro and vice versa.
My first thought was to activate Appletalk on the ethernet on my Macbook, which I failed to find anywhere. The Apple Discussions Forums revealed that Appletalk has been dropped with the introduction of Snow Leopard but all the entries where regarding printing issues with shared printers, I didn't find anything about actual file sharing and thus did not get any clues how to share files between my two machines.
My PowerBook 1400cs/166 runs on 8.6 and I use a Global Village Platinum PCMCIA card (modem and Ethernet combi card). this setup worked perfectly with 10.5 but I have not been able to make establish a connection since running 10.6 on my MBP.
I am really desperate since I heavily depend on being able to exchange files between those two machines through an ethernet connection.
So I kindly ask anyone who might be able to help me to please consider posting any solutions or at least ideas which could help me with my problem. I really would greatly appreciate any effort whatsoever.
Thank you very much for your time.
    EDIT:
What I forgot to mention: strangely enough, when I enable Internet Sharing on my MacBook Pro (through Airport) to Ethernet, my PowerBook 1400 can connect to the internet without any problems.

First of all let me thank you very much. It actually works (partially).
There seems to be a problem though. While I can connect perfectly from my MBP 10.6 to my PowerBook 1400, the other way round doesn't work.
My MBP does not show up in the Network browser of OS 8.6 but I could life with that.
The problem is that if I try to connect to my MBP from my PB1400 by entering the IP directly a alert message appears reading that the "User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again".
Do you have any clues what I'm doing wrong or where the problem may lie?
    PS.
Even if you may not be able to further help me with this problem, I ow you a great deal of gratitude and am very thankful for your help so far. At least I can exchange files between the two machines and that's what I needed in the first place.

  • In my shared area on network it's displaying that I shared with a fellow macbook pro

However I haven't shared with any other macbook pro user, to the best of my knowledge, so I am wondering how this has appeared, or am I just being completely stupid and is it just displaying my macbook pro?

This are the temperatures i get when i have my poweradapter connected.
But i've noticed that the temperature drops a lot when i disconnect it all the cpu core temperatures drop with 20-25°C

  • Sharing internet connection from MacBook Pro to iMac G3

My goal here is to connect my iMac G3 (that I just got) to my cable internet connection. However, there are some hurdles in doing so. On the other side of my house lies my modem. It's connected to a D-Link wireless router to give my PC, Xbox 360, Wii and MacBook Pro internet all at the same time. It's too far to drag an ethernet cable, and the iMac G3 doesn't have an AirPort card (and $99 for a used wireless b adapter is ridiculous).
From what I've gathered online, OS X can share it's internet connection with another Mac via FireWire, ethernet or AirPort. AirPort is out of the question since that's how my MacBook Pro connects to the net, and since the iMac G3 doesn't have an AirPort card. I don't have anything that uses FireWire, so othe port on both machines is free, but I also don't have a cable to connect the two. I do, however, have a few spare ethernet cables, so I'd like to get this setup using them.
Thing is, I can't get it to work. Simply enabling internet sharing in System Preferences does diddly squat, and no connection is found with Network Utility on the iMac. What I'd really like here is for someone to either instruct me on how to get this to work, or point me in the direction of such an article. I haven't been able to find anything with Google so far...
Now, my MacBook Pro obvioously runs 10.4.9 with all the updates. The iMac G3, however, is running 10.3.5 at the moment. While I will be upgrading it to tiger in the near future, I kinda wanted to play around with Internet Expplorer before doing so. Being new to the Mac and all (the MBP is my first Mac), I've never used Internet Exporer on the Mac -- or 10.3 at all really, for that matter. So if it can be done, I'd like to do this with 10.3 still on the iMac, though I could upgrade it to tiger if I HAD to.
Should it matter, the iMac G3 is a 400MHz indigo unit with 256MB RAM and a 10GB HDD. It's the summer '00 model. The MacBook Pro is a revision A system with a 1.83GHz Core Duo inside. More detailed specs can be found within my profile on here, I believe.
Sorry for such a long winded post...

Lost me there... is it Ethernet cables you're using even though it's too far? Or What?

  • File Sharing with user on MacBook Pro, restrict access to certain folders

I work on my iMac mostly and have 3 external drives hooked into the iMac. I have file sharing turned on because I want to be able to access these external drives on my macbook pro. I can get into all my drives as planned. However, I have a user on the macbook where I want to restrict them from seeing certain folders on those external drives.
For instance, I have budget documents in a folder on one of those drives along with family photos in another folder. I want this user to be able to access the folder of fam photos but not access the folder of my budget docs. How do I do this?
I tried "get info" on that specific folder and selected the "write only (drop box)" option and that doesn't work, that user can still open and see all the budget docs. I believe I've even tried removing them from that folder on the "get info" box. Either way, that folder is still accessible for all.
    Please help!!!!!!!

Response appreciated but the easiest way to handle the problem, is being able to restrict 2 or 3 folders which is what I can't figure out how to do. Maybe there is no way to do this. I have spent a good deal of time organizing the folders in the first place, and with some of these things being related to my business, it would be more of a headache and major issue, to reorganize these folders. Things are very well organized, I just don't want certain users to have access to a couple of the folders as those certain folders have income related and budget related information.
So my issue is really, not about re-organizing or any of that, but merely, how to I set a folder to where a certain user doesn't have access to that certain folder.
You wouldn't think that would be too difficult, but then again, maybe it is just something that can't be done. I would think it'd be as easy as opening the "get info" on that certain folder, selecting that user and setting it to say "no access" - however, that is not an option in the drop down and I don't know why. It offers, read & write, read only, write only (drop box). Even when I select write only, it still allows that user to see all my files in that folder and access them. So I'm just not sure why "no access" is not listed there as an option.
    Thanks.

  • Sharing between iMac and MacBook Pro

I just got a MacBook Pro. I already have an iMac, and I was curious if there was a way to share info between the two without connecting them via firewire? (For example, sharing my itunes library between the two computers)

This does not work!.  I have a MacBook Pro and iMac and i want my Macbook to be able to add content to my iMac.  I am burining CD's and movies that I own so i can view and listen on AppleTV but When adding content via my Macbook pro (Beacuse it has the CDROM) i want it to be available on the iMac and on the Macbook via my home network.
To get around the issue i have shared the Automaticlly Add to Itunes foler on my iMac so after i burn the files i can copy them over. I just hate doing this step.
    Any Ideas?

  • File sharing permissions issue between Macbook Pro and iMac

    Hi,
I'm having trouble sharing files to and from a Macbook Pro and iMac. Both are brand new, and connected via a firewire cable (Due to large file sizes)
I can share files between both computers no problem, but the files are set to 'Read only' by default once moved to the over device and can't be moved or renamed without requiring a password every single time.
Is there a way to totally share files without having to enter a password every time I want to move or rename it?
    > File sharing is turned ON on both computers.
    > Share files and folders using AFP is ticked
    > Share files and folders using SMB is ticked also.
    Thanks

Try disabling SMB File Sharing, & in the Sharing Pref Panes>Sharing>Options, see what users are listed.
Also, try logging into the other Mac with the Other Mac's username & PW, not using the name & PW of the one you're on.

  • Remote Sharing Problems with my MacBook Pro. Please help...:)

Hi all. Could really use some advice from any network pros out there.
I'll be as detailed as possible.
I am about to travel overseas for a month and wanted to setup remote access to my old G5 Dual 2.5 tower in my studio.
I found that the new OS, phones etc. have the remote management and screen sharing options so I thought I would set it up.
The first day I did it, it all worked properly and I, and my friends could all log in no problem from our phones via VNC, or computers using the 'Connect To Server' option as well as Chicken of the VNC.
I also set up my friends computer across town to do the same.
So, the next day I was fiddling with my wireless that happens to drop out every once in a while, thinking its a phone or printer interfering, but anyways, when I restarted the network, the local IP of the server computer had changed, so no problem, I went back through all of my settings and changed the IP, but then it wouldn't connect anymore. AFter 4 hours of fiddling, restarting, changing the port-forwarding etc. in the routers, I finally got it working...
Then this morning, I couldn't get it to work, and none of the IP's have changed....
Now I'm confused as it seemed to be setup fine.
    My setup is as follows.
DSL modem, I have the external IP 76.166......etc.
This DSL modem connects via ethernet to a Linksys BEFSR41 Router, which then connects via ethernet to an older Airport Extreme Base Station and also a newer Airport Express.
The G5 I am running as a server is connected via Ethernet to another Airport Express in my studio which is setup to be a wireless 'remote' on a WDS network where the older Extreme Base Station is the 'main'.
    Current local IPs are standard.
    Base Station is 10.0.1.1
    'Remote' Airport Express is 10.0.1.5
    G5 'server' computer is 10.0.1.2
    Linksys router is 192.168.1.1
I have logged into the Linksys router, gone to the Applications & Gaming/Port Range Forwarding section and enabled a port on 5900, both TCP and UDP, to go to the IP 192.168.1.102.
I have gone into the Airport Utility of the base station, clicked Advanced, and added the port forwarding of 5900 to local IP 10.0.1.2.
The remote management section on the Server G5 is on, with vnc password etc. all users.
When I try and access this computer using the 10.0.1.2 IP on the local network, it works fine, but when I try the external IP, I get the 'connection failed' error.
    Am I missing something....?
And sorry for the long email but if you are going to help, I know you'd want all the info.
Oh, and I have repaired permissions although not sure if that helps any.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Wiz

What sort of videos? What are you trying to do?
We can't advise anything that violates breaking copy protection schemes or violating copyrighted material on this forum.
If your sure your not violating, then there is SnapZProX that will record anything playing on the screen into Quicktime file with sound, and there is Firefox browser with various add-ons for downloading Flash/YouTube videos and there is Transmission to download p2p files. However with that last one you really have to be extra careful the content is not a stolen copy or malware as you can be sued and/or have your machine compromised.
For safe downloading of videos, you should take a look at Netflix, for $8 a month and installing Silverlight (they will provide it) you can stream tons of videos to your browser for viewing (not copying) and see the videos again if you wish so it isn't necessary to copy them and clog up your drives with large files.
Movie videos are usually watch once and never watch again, so it's really unnecessary to store them (especially illegal copies) and clog up your machine or be paranoid having the content and possibly being sued over it.
There is also iTunes that allows rentals, but it's not as inexpensive as Netflix $8 all you can eat monthly, but it has newer titles.

  • How do I set up file sharing between iMAC and MacBook Pro?

I am unable to use "file sharing".  When trying to connect as a "registered user" it asks for my server password.  What is that?  I have tried every password I think it could be.  I also can not connect as "using an Apple ID"

You can set up "iCloud" on all of them and select there to sync your Documents.  You must be running Mountain Lion on the MBA and iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPad in order to use iCloud:

  • Since the new Mevericks update my Air can no longer connect to a shared Itunes lib on Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I have two mac laptops at home. My pro and my air. I have it setup so that I stream all my media from my pro to my air.
I updated my pro to the newest Mavericks version. Since that update I can no longer connect to my library on my pro via my air.
Please note that this problem here is with the mac book pro! I updated my air last night and i could still stream.
All I get is the usual "loading library" (on my air's itunes) but it never connects.
Other than restarting the application (on both computers) and restarting (both computers) what else can I do?
Are other people having the same problem??

    Hi Bryan,
    Thanks for your input.
Unfortunately I cannot get any of the OS X browsers I have tried to get beyond the accepting the site's certificate. All just stall waiting on the Outlook Web Access site. Safari 3.1, Camino, Flock, Firefox (2.0.0.12 and 3 beta 4), Netscape (7.1 and 9), Microsoft's Internet Explorer (thinking that might be more integrated with its Outlook Web Access package).
I have even deleted the certificates from my Keychain (for Safari) or within the other browsers' preferences.
Last night I even re-applied the 10.4.11 combo updater and then checked for software updates to confirm my system was up to date, but again without success when attempting to reach the Outlook Web Access site.
    Thanks anyway.
    Ted
