Sharing master page layer across frames

FW CS3...
As I see it, a common use for "Pages" in CS3 would be to have
one page for
the "homepage" of a site and another for each major
section... For all the
common elements (like the main BG i use a master page). In my
example I
would also like ot have a sepearte page for the main nav. The
nav page will
have 2 frames: one for the normal state and one for the over
state.
Makes sense so far...
Problem is that the "master page" layer that I see in the
layers pallette
when my Nav page is active does not share across the 2
frames... I can
duplicate the appropriate background areas, but that defeats
the purpose of
having a master page layer doesn't it.
I feel like I am missing something when it comes to using
frames and pages
appropriately. Thoughts?
Alex

Thats a valid point, but with normal layers (as oposed to the
"Master Page"
layer) you get to pick whether or not the layer is shared
across frames ...
why not with teh "Master Page" layer?

  • Problem with master page

Can anyone help me? I'm under the impression that if I change a text box on my master page A all the other text boxes on the other pages marked A will similarly change. Similarly, the layers on the master page should be reflected on the other pages.
    Except they aren't.
I had to go through all my double page spreads to change the size of the text boxes, and cannot get the layer order on my master page to be reflected on the other pages.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you today -- I'm trying to repair windows on my house at the same time as I do forum stuff, and I'm racing the weather.
As near as I can tell you aren't actually using any of the master objects on Master A except the page markers, and you've detached that on page 3 and overridden on another page to bring them in front of the background (which is not in the frame from the master page).
Here is what I would do:
First add margin and column guides to the master page, and a bleed to the document to get a bleed guide for your background. Your margin and column guides should be set so they enclose the two rectangles you drew to hold the text. Delete the rectangles for the text. You don't need them and they'll probably continue to cause trouble. If you need to resize the text frames, enable Layout Adjustment, then change the margin and column guides on the master page. Text frames snapped to the guides will resize to match the new guides.
I'd get rid of the rectangle for the background image, too, unless you plan on putting a background on every page. It's also unnecessary, and annoying, for use on only a few pages. Add a new layer and move the page numbers up onto that so they will appear in front of any background images.
If you want to Place text, you can autoflow without the master frames (but if you really want master frames, make them text frames, not rectangles, and thread them on the master pages from left to right). ID will create a frame the width of the column guides where you click, and it will extend downward to the bottom margin guide from the place where you click. If you hold Shift to autoflow, the additional threaded frames will fill the columns from top margin to bottom margin.
If you want to Paste text, draw the first frame, then paste. Pick up the overset and auto-flow into the next column.

  • Best practice using "Master Page"?

I have a photography website that I am building. Aside from the splash page, all of the other pages have the same header and footer. I figure I can use a master page to save some time. Since the splash page is completely different, should a create a new .png document to work on that? It seems like once you set a master page, ALL pages in the .png have to incorporate the same elements.
Also, with a master page do I only need to slice and export the master elements once? And just slice the new items from the different pages?
    Thanks,
    Gordon

You don't need a separate PNG file. Simply create the splash page as a separate page not linked to the master. You can remove the master page layer from any page by choosing this option in the Layers panel options.

  • Adding new elements to a Master Page and sharing them to existing pages

I need to include new navigation elements on the master page

OK there are two related as I see it.
Each of your pages consists of a solid, opaque bitmap for a
    main image.
Master Pages, by default, are at the bottom of the layer
    stack. Your
tabs ARE present, you just can't see them because they are
    covered up by
    the bitmap.
Assuming you don't have those page images as multi-object
    elements,
where you can edit the blue backgrounds, there are still two
    things you
can do, both of which are pretty easy.
Go into each page and temporarily reduce the opacity of Layer
    1.
Use the marquee tool to draw a selection around the area of
    the tabs.
    Delete the selection.
Return the lay back to full opacity.
    OR
Try dragging the Master page to the top of the layer stack in
    each page.
Hide or delete the Master page background.
This option is a little trickier, but I was able to do it.
    Wait for the
black bar to appear before you release the mouse. You may
    need to try
this a few times before it works.

  • How to link a text box to an anchor frame in the master pages?

Ok, as the title states, we are trying to figure out if it is possible to link a text box to an anchor frame in the master page. When you look at our Master Page layout, we have a text box in the upper left hand corner of the left hand page, this is used for our machine serial numbers. Then we have an anchor frame that automatically fills out the figure number. Let's say I have pages 2 & 3 (left & right), they have a S/N at the top of the page for the machine, then pages 4 & 5 have a different S/N. If I have to add more pages in between pages 2 & 3 (bumping the current 4 & 5 to 6 & 7), the anchor frame bumps to the next page, but the S/N text box doesn't. Is there a way to fix it so that they both move to the next page? Thanks for the help.
P.S. I can include images and other info if needed.

I have included a two pictures that should help me explain.
    Master Page:
This is the master page set up, the "Page Text Box" has the flow set to "B" while the S/N text box has the flow set to "A". This setup is for our parts manuals, the left page is usually an illustration while the right page is usually a parts list. The text box, anchored frame & paragraph tag are empty in the master page set up. The "page text box" has a flow of "B" and the "S/N text box" has a master flow of "A".
    Body Page 1:
When we create new pages, the paragraph tag automatically fills in the figure title on the left page, then we add an anchor frame within the text box to hold the illustration. You will notice that I added in a "test" serial number at the top of the page. Now if I need to go back and add two pages before this, the anchor frame, illustration and parts list will move to a new page, but the S/N text box will not. The "Before S/N TBD" would stay on the original page.
This is what happens, the text box containing the illustration and the parts list "bump" to the next page, but the S/N text box does not. So the question we have is there a way to link that text box to the page so when we create new pages the S/N text box moves with the illustration.
    Does this help?
    Thanks for the assistance Error7103.

  • How do I 'assign a higher layer to the object on the master' (page numbers on master) I understand the layer needs to be at the top to show above placed images on pages but how do I do this?

I've added the page numbers to my master pages. They are displaying on the pages but I have images on the individual pages that are covering the numbers. I understand I need to assign a higher layer to the object but I don't understand how to do that. Please help me? Please explain a simply clearly as possible, I've read other answers but still don't understand. Wish it was as simple as select object, right click, edit layer!
    Many thanks!

    Layers panel;
    Create new layer
    Switch to Master page
Make sure new layer is on top in the Layers panel, if not drag the layer on top in the Layers panel.
Select (click once on) that top layer (pen symbol appears behind that layer in the Layer panel)
Now draw your page numbers etc on the Mastet page
From now on, select (click once on) any Layer in the Layers panel that is below the layer you used on your Master page items and create new objects in your document pages.
If you accidently created objects on a 'wrong' layer:
    Select those objects
You will see a square behind the layers name in the Layers panel
Click and hold the mouse on that square and drag it behind the name of the layer you want to move the objects to.

  • CS4 auto page insert: master page frame or not

In CS4 the preferences for auto page insert allow to turn off 'limit to master pages'.
However, don't see much difference wether it is on or off. The Help file states that if you do NOT use master text frames, a new textframe should be inserted, one column between the margins.
Can not get this to work when limit to master pages is off. What am I misreading...?
(It is funny sometimes: I have 'delete empty pages' checked (it is on). Now make a document 3 pages long. OK, now draw a empty text frame on page one. Do the same on page 2.
Now connect both text frames: page 2 disappears. This is to be expected but be aware of this.
Now insert text in the textframe on page one that does not fit totally in this textframe: overset symbol appears.
Now where is page 2 that was 'auto deleted' and had the threaded text frame?
Nope, it does NOT appear again!
I admit I still have to get to grip with this, so what DOES the switch 'limit to master pages' on/off have for effect...)

Yes, I know. But maybe my point came over the wrong way. If you have auto page delete on, you have three pages and a textframe that spans page 1 and 2, but not yet text in it, and you connect the empty text frames, page 2 will disappear. Now fill page one with overset, page 2 won't do anything because it needs two pages.
Disable auto page delete and it will work.
Just wondering why it was designed this way, that's all ;-)

  • Master page graphic frame behavior

I am new to InDesign. I have created a master page that has 4 graphic frames on it. If I create a page based on the master and I try to place an image in each frame, it only works for the first frame.  Each subsequent place just put the image into the page but not one of the defined frames setup in the master.
Can someone tell me why this happens? And if this is what it is supposed to do, how do I accomplish creating a page based on a master that has 4 frames to accept graphics.
    Any help is appreciated.

I do not see these files because the path does not exist and i do not see where to show hidden files in system preferences. Can you elaborate?

  • Vertical frame texts in master pages...

Have a book with text and a big section of landscape photographs.
    Text is no problem. (Portrait)
Tried to put the captions for the pictures (just below in a conventional way with a formatted list) with 2 methods:
    a) reducing the margins until obtain a text area where to flow the captions but the text was placed horizontally (of course...)
    b) put 2 threaded vertical text frames in the master page but could not flow the text in the regular pages...

So let's see if I have this right, now.
You've put two text frames on the master spread to hold the captions and rotated each of them ninety degrees counter-clockwise. You've threaded the frame on the left page to the one on the right. The captions are all on one continuous story and you've built in a way to make each caption start in the next frame. Is all of that correct?
Describe what you are doing, in detail, from that point forward, and what happens at the end of each step.

  • Help w. Text Frames in Master Page

    Hi
I need to make a simple task, yet it seems impossible.
I am making a large number of documents of the same type and stlye. Lets say, something like a diploma or a certificate. They all have the same design, and the only thing that is different in them is the text in the 2 text boxes each one of them has. Lets say if we follow the certificate example that on each card I must put in the same two text boxes - "the name of the person" and "the date". So I must set a nice master page with 2 text boxes that I can fill in for each card. Since the design may change, I need to be able to move the positions of the boxes from the master page after I have filled them. I must also be able to change the case, font and other text properties of each box. For example, I when I would have done 1000 certificates and filled in respectively 1000 names and dates of receiving and then I would decide that I must place the box with the name on a different position on the page and also change the text properties, say from Times New Roman to Georgia. And to do it from the master page or any other effective way without changing each certificate.
So far, I managed to place the boxes on the master page, and I saw that I can overwrite the text in each certificate and still be able to move the position of all boxes from the master page. But I cannot find a way to change the text properties of all boxes.
    Thank you for your help!

With a long list of data items, you could consider using data merge. You'd need a template document; on its page create a placeholder text frame for each data item, like name and date, if they'll need individual positioning. Put a data placeholder in each frame. (It's also possible to insert multiple merge placeholders in a single frame.) You'd also need paragraph styles. If you have material that is the same on every page, put that on a master page in the merge template.
Search Google for terms like "InDesign data merge tutorial," and similar phrases, without quotes, for details.

  • My master pages have disappeared from the View menu in Frame Maker and I can't get to them. View does show body pages and reference pages.

Master pages went missing from my FrameMaker 12 setup about 4 days ago. I can see body and references pages. I have tried reinstalling. The master pages are missing from all of my FrameMaker documents, absolutely all of them. I have done two new installations of FM 12, no fix.

Does the old shortcut still work? [Esc, v, M plus its close kin Esc, v, R for Reference pages and Esc, v, B for Body pages – all case-sensitive]
Also, does "missing" mean you select View master pages and get a blank screen? while double-checking the view shortcuts, I discovered this can be replicated by turning off borders [Esc, v, b] in Master page view … if you happen to be using a Master page layout with no header or footer. But I have also, occasionally, ended up with blank master pages even when they should have had content. It's a mystery.

  • How to apply master pages across sections or whole

It's a very basic problem to which I'm not readily finding the answer in searches. I wish to apply master pages and consistently, no matter how I format the request, am notified: "one or more of the pages specified are not valid page names." So please provide an example of how the page/section names are supposed to be written for:
    A 100 page book with 1 section;
    A 100 page book with 2 section;
Applying master page changes to only a subsection of the book (i.e. pages 50-75).
I'm aware it's similar to "Sec1: 1-100", but not precisely that.

OK, I think maybe I'm beginning to understand waht you are doing. Are you trying to use the Pages Palette menu to Apply Master Page to a range? You would need to include the section number for both pages, like this: Sec1:1 - Sec1:100.
You can also select the pages in the palette first, then use the apply master command. That might be easier.

  • Why do pages scroll over a navigational menu pinned to the top of my master page?

I am trying to create a static menu bar across the top of the entire site, but all pages continue to scroll over top of this menu, regardless of arrangment etc.  How do I make page content go 'under' the nav menu pinned at the top of my master page?

You need to put you Navigation items on a new layer, then make sure that layer is on top.

    pgfId = F_ApiGetNamedObject(docId, FO_PgfFmt, "100_TOC_Header01");
    F_ApiSetInt(docId, pgfId, FP_AcrobatLevel, 1);
    pgfId = F_ApiGetNamedObject(docId, FO_PgfFmt, "010_01_00_Heading01");
                            F_ApiSetInt(docId, pgfId, FP_AcrobatLevel, 2);

    F_ApiSimpleSave(docId, F_ApiGetString(FV_SessionId, docId, FP_Name), False);
to set bookmarks for PDF when doing a save as PDF on the book.
This works for all FO_PgfFmt's defined in the document except when the FO_PgfFmt is defined in a master page.
Is there some setting that is needed to get bookmarks from master page FO_PgfFmt's?
Or is there some setting that needs to be done on the master page to get the bookmark set?
Any advice or directions would be helpful.
Using FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows 7.

Whoever created the Master Page didn't know what they were doing from a workflow perspective. There should never be live content on a Master page.
The title is placed in a background frame on what is probably defined as the "First" master page and is only used once in your document. It would have been better if this was a variable (it might be, have you checked?) and then you could get at the content easily.
Option 1: In order to use FM's internal bookmark generation tools, you will need to get that content onto the Body page and into the same flow (and at the correct location) in order to have it appear at the correct location in the Bookmarks panel of the PDF.
From a programming point of view you will probably need to do the following.
    1. Get the text string from the background frame on the specific Maser Page in the document
    2. Create a custom colour that will be applied to the Text in order to render it "invisible" on the Body page using FM's Color Views option (set the colour to the Invisible column in the View number for the document). (FM will still know that it is there but will not display nor output that string). You could also have this pre-defined in a template and import the template into all files in the book (including the desired paratag for that paragraph on the Master page).
    3. Insert an an anchored frame (outside of text frame position) at the start of the flow.
    4. Insert a text frame into that anchored frame
    5. Insert the text string from the background text frame
    6. Apply the appropriate paratag that uses the Invisible colour for the text
    7. You can now add the paratag to the bookmark list and generate the PDF.
Option 2: Create the bookmark code directly using pdfmark commands in a postscript text frame on the Body page. Postscript text frame contents are interpreted by Distiller from the output and do not display.
    1. Get the text string from the background frame in the document
    2. Insert an an anchored frame (outside of text frame position) at the start of the flow.
    3. Insert a postscript text frame into that anchored frame
    4. Insert the bookmark pdfmark code including the text from step 1.
    Sample pdfmark code:
[/Title (the string from the background text frame here) [options for font, colour and hierarchy] /OUT pdfmark
The minimum info required is in bold.
