Sharing MobilMe movies with others

I recently shared a movie I made in iMovie '09 with friends. One friend and wife could not open the movie on their computer. One was using a Sony PC with Windows. His wife was using Vista. Neither of them could open the movie. Can anyone help with this so I could pass on advice to them as to what they or I should do?

They need to download QuickTime Player, which is a free download from Apple.

  • Sharing iTunes library with other users (on Vista)

I'm posting this for my sister who just purchased a new computer running Vista. She's set up a user account for herself as well as one for each of my two nephews. We've successfully moved over her iTunes music folder from her laptop and can now access it and listen through her account.
However, we'd like to set it up so that my two nephews can also listen to the music from their user accounts. My oldest nephew also has a shuffle that would sync to it.
I've found a link to information about sharing, but I still need to clarify a few things.
    Here's the link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195
On this page, it describes how "to share your music with other accounts on the computer" and also how "to listen to another account's music files".
Exactly how are these two things different? I'm pretty sure that I probably want the first of the two, but I'm not positive.
And once we successfully set this up, would we have to sync the shuffle via my sister's main account or could it be synced from any of them?

Let's answer your second question first ...
And once we successfully set this up, would we have to sync the shuffle via my sister's main account or could it be synced from any of them?
    Any of them.
... and your first question second.
Exactly how are these two things different?
The first part - sharing your music with other accounts - makes the music available to the other users on the computer.
It is then up to the other users to decide whether or not they want to make use of the available music, hence the second part - listening to another account's music files - which, as the article says, must be repeated "for each account that is listening to shared music."

  • File system management when sharing photos/music with other users in Mac OS

I'm a new convert from the Windows world. I'm trying to setup multiple accounts for each user within my household. However, I'd like us to all share the same set of folders for photos within iPhoto and music in iTunes. Is it best to just used the "shared" folder instead of keeping them in the standard home directory and trying to share those folders with other users? What is the best approach to this. I would imagine most people do this for managing their music if not photos as well. Just trying to learn best practice on the file system management before I copy over gigs of files from my old PC.
    Thanks much,

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. This might help with iPhoto.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Finally: If you’re comfortable in the Terminal, and understand File Permissions, ACL’s etc., some folks have reported success using the process outlined here . (Note this page refers to 10.4, but it should also work on 10.5). If you’re not comfortable with the terminal, and don’t know an ACL from the ACLU, then you’re best doing something else... Oh, and the warning about simultaneous users still applies.

  • Sharing a folder with other users on the same machine (SOLVED)

    Hi,
Recently, I've been sharing my computer with my dad. I don't want him to use my account, since I have a lot of secret files and bookmarks on my profile. However, I would like to share all my music with him. What I did was to set the permission of my Music directory to 777 and using root create a symbolic link from my own account to his account. But then when I log into his account, it says the folder is corrupt.
Then I created a symbolic link from my music directory to /media/ and set the permission to 777. Again I tried to see if I can access it from my dad's account and got the same error.
What's the best way of creating common folders between users in a linux machine?
Note that, since I use Amarok, I don't want to move my Music to somewhere else, because it will mess up with the database info of songs.
EDIT: I solved the problem by using mount instead of symbolic links.
You have to issue the following command:
    mount --bind /home/name/music /media/music/
Of course you have to execute this command whenever you boot the computer. Just place this command in rc.local and you're good.
    Thanks

grey wrote:If I wanted to share it between different users, I wouldn't put it inside one particular users home directory. Just use a reasonable place that is not used by the system, like /usr/local/data, /var/shared or so, give it the desired permissions and that's it.
you are absolutely right and i recommend this as well.
grey wrote:The link will probably not work, because in order to read /home/yourname/music, you need to be able to read /home/yourname. That is even true if root created the link.
that is true for symbolic links, not bind mounts.  a bind mounted dir doesn't care about the parent directories because your not traversing to it through a link, it's just 'there'.  this is how i put folders under my ~ out on my http server.

  • Sharing qt movies with Windows users

I use iPhoto to make slide shows which I can share with other Mac users. However, I would like to be able to convert a .mov file to a Windows exe file to share with friends who are Windows users. Does anyone know of any software which will do this?
    Thanks

    Right.
QuickTime Pro can export to AVI but iPhoto can't. Any AVI made would use the ancient Cinepak video codec.
But the upload from any of the iLife apps would still write page code that only uses QuickTime.
    It's a lose lose proposition.
Buying QuickTime Pro ($30) and then the $50 for flip4mac could create a .wmv file. The only way to use that new file would be in a Web page that merely "linked to file". Linking to the file would allow the user to download it and open it in any supported player.
I wouldn't go through all those steps and spend that kind of money just for a handful of Windows users that do not want (or can't) to install the free QuickTime Player for Windows.

  • Sharing a "Note" with others (aside from "Family" sharing)

While I can share a specific "Calendar" with others (via specified email addresses and iCloud), is it possible to share a "Note" as well (via the same)?

you can have multiple devices setup to use the same iTunes account, which will give you access to all of the media on the computer (music, movies, photos, apps, etc).
you can have separate sync settings setup so music you want on your phone will not be the music your son wants on his phone, unless you listen to the same music.

  • Sharing a movie with another iPod synched with other account

I have purchased several movies in my own iTunes/OS-X account. My son just bought an iPod (with video capabilities) and wants to download and watch them on his iPod. He has his own iTunes/OS-X accounts on the same computer. I was able to sync his iPod with my account and transfer (copy) the movies to his account but this is redundant as we both now have copies of the movies.
Is there anyway to share movies/music/tv-shows across accounts on the same computer so that multiple family members (we know have 5 iPods/accounts) on the same computer can have the same movie on multiple iPods from multiple accounts?

  • How to share movies with others

    Hi all,
This is probably a really dumb question for which I'm sorry for, but I'm a bit confused.
This is the first time that I've really used iMovie. My son has made a 5 minutes movie, which just comprises of still photos imported from iphoto, with a few effects added, plus audio. When I look in the movie folder, there are folders with star on them titled "Audio waveforms" and "Media", plus a Qt.mov file, which is only about 180kB large. Is this the file that I email to share to others? Why do I have to go through "File, Share, Email...etc" which makes a much bigger 5MB file?
    I hope this makes sense.
    Thanks.
    imac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    this makes sense…
that file is just a reference file… it is just a collection of advises, "use photo1, add transition disolve, then clip_04, lower volume of audio_55"....
for "sharing" a video, it needs to be rendered and encoded to a "complete", standalone movie/file… different uses, different encoding (size, framerate, codec, etc)…

  • Sharing iTunes movies with family member

Hi everyone and thank you in advance if you can help me at all.
At home my partner and I share my MBP (using only one account), which contains my iTunes library that I use with several of my own devices (ipad, iphone, ipod). My partner is going to buy an iPad this week and I want us to be able to share TV/Movies whilst maintaining separate iTunes libraries on the MBP (we have very different music tastes and do not want to 'pollute' each others' libaries). Any future TV/Movies purchases will not be made from a shared itunes account - in case we break up we'd want to walk away with our respective movies.
Apart from creating a new user account on the MBP for my partner and re-locating both iTunes libraries to the shared 'public' folder so that we can manually add movies and TV to our individual iTunes accounts (which seems like a clunky and hard-drive consuming solution) I'm not sure what to do.
    Is there another way?
    Thanks
    Carrie

    Hi bcarrie,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The method you mention above is the best way to share your iTunes libraries:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
The other option would be to backup the iTunes library to an external drive, and then copy it to the new User Account if you want to develop the two libraries independently.

  • Question re. sharing iTunes library with other user accounts

    I have seen this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
I want to share one library with four users on my account.  I'd like for any music purchased or ripped to this computer to end up in User 1's iTunes library, and for Users 2, 3 and 4 to have access to User 1s library just as User 1 does.
When I follow the directions for "Listening to another account's music files" in the above referenced document, it tells me to navigate to User 1's library through the dialog box that pops up after User 2 clicks "Add to LIbrary".
The problem is, when User 2 is doing that, and User 1 has put the iTunes library in ~user1/public, as the directions suggest, that dialog box won't allow user 2 to access User 1's Public folder.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance...
    Chris

Another long description in store here...
iTunes has two main elements. One is the library.itl database file.  When you open iTunes it is this that you see. It contains what music is in a library, playlists, date added, playcount, etc.  It is this that is really the library.  The other element are the media files. When you tell iTunes to play a track it checks in its library file which music file is associated with that track and goes and plays it.
Now you say, "for Users 2, 3 and 4 to have access to User 1s library just as User 1 does."  Do you really want User 4 to be able to go and delete or rename tracks, or change the playlists? This can be done if you really want it.  Or do you want each person to keep their own library [file] and share media?  Even that has disadvantages as a person might still be able to rename a file or even delete it for all.  At least everybody would have their own playlists, ratings, etc, though a person could delete a file and then it would appear as a broken link for others.  To be honest, iTunes isn't great for sharing.

Exactly what you want to do will involve different setups so before going into detailed insructions it would help to know which ones to provide.  Here's an sampling:

iTunes Home Sharing now works between users on same computer - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3865597  The problem with HS is I think you then end up with multiple copies of files, one for each user.  At least they cannot damage another's collection though.

  • Sharing Numbers spreadsheet with others so they can make slight changes?

I created a Numbers spreadsheet and saved it to iCloud with a password. I want to share it with 2 other people and allow them to make simple changes to the spreadsheet.
    1. Do they need to log in to iCloud to make changes to the spreadsheet that I shared?
    2. How do they save their changes after making them? I just checked the link created when sharing the spreadsheet and I didn't see a save button in the browser.
    3. Which browsers will others be able to view/edit the spreadsheet in? Will it also work on PC?
    Thanks!

You can create a "master" path and then link all of the other paths to that one with an expression. You don't even need to write the expression yourself; you can just Alt-click the Mask Path property stopwatch for a child mask and drag the expression pick whip to the master Mask Path property. You can link the paths of shape layers the same way.

  • How i can stop sharing my contacts with other iphone after installing find my iphone?

After installing find my iphone in other devices my contacts starting sharing with that device. How i can stop that?

The two devices are using the same iCloud ID, hence they are syncing the contacts, as the system is designed to do.
BTY, I'm not sure what your intention was to install the Find My iPhone app, but if you are trying to start that service, the app won't help. It is intended to locate OTHER devices.  To start the Find My iPhone service, you do it via the settings.

  • Sharing Aperture Library with Other Computers on the Home Network

    Hello,
Forgive me if this question has been asked before, if it has, I missed it.
I have a mac on which I have Aperture and have taken the time to edit all of our family photos (cropping, color management, red eye reduction, etc.), so, after having done all of this, my wife, when showing her friends photos and such, would like to be able to have access to those photos on her mac laptop. But, I called Apple on this and their tech support guy made it sound like the only way to do this would be to create a web gallery for each set of pictures. And, I have to say, that solution seemed a bit extreme for sharing pictures within a home, not to mention the logistics for creating web galleries for tens of thousands of photos. So, the other option that occurred to me was that I could export all of the pictures into a directory and then have her iphoto import all of those pictures, however, there are two problems with that: 1) she is not up to date with new photos that have been added to Aperture and 2) the subfolder structure isn't preserved (i.e., it's just a huge mass of photos not a groups organized according to event).
So, my question is: does anyone know a better more practical way to do this? I would think it would be something that Apple would foresee and have a fix for but maybe not.
    Thank you very much,
    Ken

+"Single User License. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you."+
I own an iMac and I pretend to buy an Apple laptop as secondary computer for my home, just after vacations, as now I have some more important expenses that should deliver new set of photos into Aperture library.
iMac is in use by me, and my wife, and kid. I assume that it will be legal to install copy of Aperture on my new laptop. So I will end in same situation as you are today. In my opinion it will be legal to use Aperture on both computers, as both are in possession of my family, and at least in my country we are somehow single entity (we pay common taxes from our joint income etc.) - it depends on the marriage settlement, however we've choose it that way.
In this case I'll simple export library and import it on my secondary computer. I own my iMac, and I'll own my Macbook Pro. At the same moment my wife own them as well. I'm not sure about your situation, but it might work for you. The questions is, is it really legal?

  • Sharing home movies with family on iCloud

    Hello All,
Can some one tell me if this is possible...  I want to upload my home movies (about an hour and thirty minutes) to the cloud.  Then I want some of my family members (who live in different locations) to be able to download these home movies onto their computers or just watch them from the cloud on their macs and windowns computers.  Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Not with iCloud. You could use something like Dropbox and put in a public folder.
