Sharing music in family

seems basic enough - but here it is -
thanks in advance -
4 ipods
4 computers
library on wife's computer set for home sharing
so I put all music here -
HOWEVER, kids download music onto their computer (legal downloads from itune store)
without having to push songs across network (slow process)
without having to burn cd's (cheap but waste of cd)
I would like to connect Ipod to another computer and take the music directly...
how can this be done -
This is one family - and all music in house is shared.
also - when I connected my daughters ipod nano to my macbook Pro - it did not recognize it - either in itunes or in Finder.....
thanks again.

It can't. At least not with the iPod Nano 5th Generation. You can only sync the music through iTunes.
All downloaded music - does not have to be through iTunes, drag to iTunes to sync to your iPod Nano.
If there is a workaround check iTunes & iPod Hints & Tips

  • Sharing Music among family members

I want to know if there is a way to share music among family members, other than the share music function in preferences, who use the same Mac but signed in under different accounts?
My wife, daughter, and my self have different user accounts set up on the same Mac. I would like us all to share the same Music Library in order to save harddrive space. As it is now we each have a different library, which we can listen to music with the sharing function in preference. But I want one common Library that we can all access all our music through our individual accounts and be able to add music to each of our iPods though our accounts. I hope I made my self clear enough.

  • Sharing Music w/ Family - How do unlock purchased music?

We have 3 computers and I would like to put songs on that my family members have purchased. I have figured out that I can back it up and then authorize my computer with their apple account. However I know that you are only allowed to authorise 5 computers on one account. Is there a way to unlock this music so that I do not use up aurthorization when we share music? If not, what happens when we exceed 5 computers - say we upgrade our computers? Will the deauthrization open account for new computers?

You can "share" your music with up to four other computers--by authorizing them (and having some sort of wireless network so the computers can "see" your library).
However, when you're sharing--the non-host computer can only listen to the music--you can't manipulate it in any way (i.e. make playlists, see coverflow view, delete songs, load iPods, etc.).
To download music, you need to have the account password. Does everyone in your family know the password? If so, make a rule that all music has to be downloaded on the main computer--so it gets filed in the central library! If not, don't worry--others will be able to listen--but they won't be able to buy!

  • Family Sharing Music w/ Match & 2 Apple IDs

I set up my Family Sharing and, ran Match successfully through Itunes to put all my music on the cloud (it took a few tries but all three steps completed for 2791 songs). When I try to access my music from the ID's I have varying results. On the devices with the same ID as the original account it appears all the songs are downloadable (just checked a few). But when I try accessing the music from my other ID it is totally random and only shows 247 of the songs available, most of which won't download anyway. I'll have some songs from an album make it over and others that won't. It doesn't appear to be related to whether or not I purchased them on Itunes or ripped them from my original CDs as I've seen some songs that made it across and others that didn't in both online purchases as well as original CDs. I ran Match again and it completed fine but no improvement on the itunes or music app end.
    Thoughts....

    Hi,
You cannot use iTunes match as part of Family Sharing.
Which purchased content can I share using Family Sharing - Apple Support -

"There are a few things that you can't share:
Songs added to iTunes Match from outside the iTunes Store
    In-App Purchases
Items that are no longer available on the iTunes Store
    Items that were hidden
    Apps that aren't shareable
If you're on an Apple TV, you can't access shared music."

  • Sharing Music on One Mac

I have recently purchased a new macbook and I have two other users in my family that will be using the computer. I've been trying to figure out how to share all our music throughout the computer. Windows has a shared music folder in which each user can access the music. Is there anyway that you can do this with a Mac? I'm just trying to get past the wall of having to create three separate music files, taking 3x the space needed. Will anyone help me? Thanks.

    Hi again zwj,
Simply change the permissions of the iTunes Library file. To achieve this do the following:
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Navigate to where your iTunes folder is (in the Shared folder) and click once on the iTunes Library file to select it.
    3. From the menubar select File->Get Info
    4. In the Get Info window that comes up click on the lock at the bottom of the window and enter your password to unlock it.
    5. In the Sharing & Permissions section of the Get Info window click on the disclosure triangle to reveal the options if they are not already displayed.
    6. Select "everyone" and change the permissions/privileges to Read & Write.
    That should do it.

  • Shared music won't appear on Windows 8.1 iTunes

My Gateway Windows laptop can share music with a Mac, but it cannot receive shared music that is shared from the same computer.
This situation involves three computers: My laptop, my family's desktop, and my father's laptop. My laptop has Windows 8.1, while the latter two have Mac OS X. All three have the latest version of iTunes. I have my laptop and my family's desktop set up share music via Music Sharing (not home sharing). My laptop can share with the desktop computer just fine. The desktop can share with my father's laptop without any problems, meaning that there is nothing wrong with the desktop. However, the shared music from the desktop does not appear on the shared music section of the laptop, no matter how close in proximity the laptop is to the desktop. Therefore, there is something wrong with my laptop's ability to receive shared music.
I should also mention that I have a firewall that is managed by Norton Internet Security. The firewall allows the iTunes.exe file through. Any ideas? Is it simply the fact that windows can share music to a mac, but not the other way around? Or is it a Windows 8.1 problem?

    Never mind, problem solved.

  • Sharing Music between two Apple IDs

My son is buying and iphone for the first time today. The problem is that he has fill his old ipod with music he purchased using my Apple ID. Is there a way to share the iTunes music between both IDs? Can I duplicate the itunes music folder so that his ID has it own music and my would continue to have all of my music? Any assistance would be great.
I have seen some articles, but unsure if they will accomplish this task. Thanks!

  • Who is sharing my "shared music"?

When I got into my iTunes, I found there were two playlists in my "shared music" file that don't belong to me or anyone in my family. How did they get there? How do I keep this from happening again?

  • Sharing Music: Some Songs Don't Show Up on 2nd Computer but Playlist Does

I am sharing songs using iTunes between my Powerbook and my G3 B&W. On the Powerbook, I see all of the Playlists that are on the G3 but if I open SOME (not all) Playlists, there are no songs inside. The songs ARE on the hard drive, however, in the iTunes folders. Any suggestions?
Info: The "missing" songs are all legitimate imports from purchased CDs.
More info: The G3 music is on an external hard drive.
More info: The G3 music was originally on the Powerbook, I copied it to the external drive and then I exported/imported the Library and Playlists onto the G3 to use the second machine as the music server. Did I mess up the import of the Playlists?
Even more info: the G3 is one version of iTunes older than the Powerbook (which is up to date).
    Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem. My library on my G4 tower has 17 371 songs, but it only shows up on the PowerBook as 16 991. (Both machines are running iTunes 6.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.4.) I first noticed this problem months ago, and it's persisted through several new versions of iTunes, as well as several complete nuke-and-rebuilds of the iTunes library on my tower.

  • Questions on organizing/sharing music files on 3 PC networked drive

I just added 1Tb network drive to 3 pc home network... I am planning on moving my iTunes music folder from the older, smaller network drive. I exceeded the 160GB size of the old drive when converting all of the WMA losselss files to Apple lossless while maintaining the old WMA files(I still think the Windows Media Player system is superior). With the new addition to our network, I am planning on the 3 pcs sharing music files... (my wife has been using iTunes for a while, I have just recently went over to the dark side)
What is the best way to organize the files??
-How to shuffle all without the folder of Christmas & Holiday music playing.
    -Segregate each users individual files.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated, I know it would save a lot of time and pain instead of the trial and error method.

Thanks, Jason & Mike. This is how I resolved the problem. Turned out the disk with the data was in NTFS format. Neither my eMac nor my wife's Carbon iMac (prehistoric, in other words) was able to read it, on repeated attempts. In process I discovered (to my surprise) that the external hard drive attached to my eMac (a 320 Gig My Book) was formatted in FAT 32 format, and that the PC laptop (Thinkpad) read from it, and wrote to it, without any problem. (Is FAT 32 less than optimal for use with a pre-Intel Mac?). So I just copied the needed files from the NTFS disk to the FAT 32 disk, via the Thinkpad. When I reconnected the FAT 32 drive to the eMac, it turned out that it was easy [with some fiddling] to put the titles of the new music into the iTunes Library, without having to copy the music itself into iTunes. Making playlists does still seem to have to go manually. Sometimes the "New Playlist from Selection" option automatically gives a name (the original name) to the album from which the music came, sometimes it doesn't. Rationale not clear to me. Other problem: often the sequence is jumbled (this is after I added the whole collection of folders containing music to my iTunes Library in one fell swoop). Usually it was possible to correct this by copying track names for albums one album at a time from the external HD (in Columns view, selecting all the tracks in each folder simultaneously) directly into the playlist; the playlist name then always had to be copied or typed in separately. I don't know if I'm missing an easier route. Also, I see that I have version 4.7.1 of iTunes - I'll download a newer version! Don't know whether newer version will affect what I want to do in a positive sense.

  • Sharing music on the same pc with different accounts

I am sharing music and movies on the same pc but managing it with different accounts.  Recently, when I add new content in the public folde, it only shows up in the one account that I adde it to and not the other accounts.

If you want all users to be able to access the same music, but with different libraries, NikkiG's advice is spot on. However, I thought I'd throw in my 2¢ since I just set this up for a friend.
If you want all your users to have exactly the same library, and not just access to a shared library, do the following:
-move the entire "iTunes" folder (~/Music/iTunes) into the Shared folder or to separate drive.
-in each user's account, remove the iTunes folders (or just move them to a new location until you're positive this method works for you)
-pop open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and here's where it gets a little dicey; type the following into the command line:
    ln -s /Users/Shared/iTunes/ ~/Music/iTunes/
What this does is create a symbolic link (think alias, but more technical and powerful) between the iTunes folder in the Shared folder, and each user's iTunes folder. This way, each user is directly accessing the iTunes library, and not just through the shared area in iTunes itself. This allows them to add/remove music and playlists to the same library.
HOWEVER, this method will mess up if you have multiple users logged in and using iTunes at the same time.

  • ATV3 New Update Breaks Home Sharing Music Library Streaming (Again)

Windows 7 user here using Apple TV 3.  Overall, I love the device, when it works right.
When I first got it, using the Home Sharing Music Library feature from the Apple TV (in other words, pulling content from the computer) was broken in that it would play for a while, then suddenly stop.  There was a *huge* thread on this where many people seemed to experience it.
I was so happy when the last AppleTV update fixed this (for me anyways, and I'd guess many others) - since then (months) it worked flawlessly until today, when the ATV prompted me for an update.  Now it's even worse than before and appears to play the first song, then immediately get stuck on the second.  =(  Anyone else having this issue?
Fortunately, my workaround works, which is "pushing" content from my computer, but this isn't nearly as convenient for a variety of reasons (including much less control via the AppleTV if I'm just relaxing and listening).
I truly hope Apple can resolve this quickly, since they had it nailed before...

Luke, I can confirm the bugs with the latest AppleTV software, version 5.  It doesn't matter if it is an ATV2 or ATV3 because they are running the same OS version.  There are Home Sharing problems because immediately after I updated my ATV2, I started having Home Sharing problems when trying to play any video from my iMac.  The link between the Mac and the ATV2 breaks and it bumps back to the main menu with no computers displayed.  Quitting iTunes and re-launching fixes the problem, but it isn't guaranteed.  Sometimes you will get lucky and it will remain connected, other times, it will break the link again, after another 5 minutes.  And, it won't remember your place in the video when the link breaks.
The other major bug is that TV shows are displayed out of order.  Apple has confirmed the TV show order bug, but haven't heard anything on the Home Sharing bug.  I have reported that one to Apple.  Hopefully we will get a software update soon.
