Sharing Music on One Mac

I have recently purchased a new macbook and I have two other users in my family that will be using the computer. I've been trying to figure out how to share all our music throughout the computer. Windows has a shared music folder in which each user can access the music. Is there anyway that you can do this with a Mac? I'm just trying to get past the wall of having to create three separate music files, taking 3x the space needed. Will anyone help me? Thanks.

Hi again zwj,
Simply change the permissions of the iTunes Library file. To achieve this do the following:
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Navigate to where your iTunes folder is (in the Shared folder) and click once on the iTunes Library file to select it.
3. From the menubar select File->Get Info
4. In the Get Info window that comes up click on the lock at the bottom of the window and enter your password to unlock it.
5. In the Sharing & Permissions section of the Get Info window click on the disclosure triangle to reveal the options if they are not already displayed.
6. Select "everyone" and change the permissions/privileges to Read & Write.
That should do it.

  • Problems with home sharing - copy & paste music from one mac to another mac

Using home sharing and two macbook pros, I am trying to copy and paste music from one of the mac pros to the other.  Sharing appear to be set up properly and the mac allows me to highlight the music i want to copy and then drag it to the music folder . The mac then indicates that fies are being copied...for example, it now says "copying 1 of 10".  However, it never goes beyond this.  After a while I click the "x" and start over, but nothing ever happens.  Anyone have ideas?  This shouldn't be that difficult.

    no.
for home sharing to work, all machines need to be on the same network.

How do you stream music in itunes from one mac to another?

  • Shared music from one computer and library to two ipod touches

so here is my issue. i once had an ipod nano and was full\ of music. christmas last year, my bf got us both the new ipod touch, and so we shared his laptop. i was able to transfer the old music from the nano to the computer and it shows up. however, since we live together and share the media library, i want to know how to get the info for both ipods into my ipad. i tried everything, and long story short, the two ipods both contain our shared library, but the library says the files from the nano and cannot be located. the music i needed is on one of the new ones. so question is, how to i get my entire media library from icloud accounts, devices, and what not transferred to my ipad. can someone help me?

Apparently, nobody is doing something similar...
As an FYI, Podcasts are still automatically updated even when you check the "Manually Manage Music and Videos" checkbox.
I plan to see if I can indeed sync my music with the Mac over the weekend...

  • Copying my music from one Mac to another

I have all my music on my Mac Pro iTunes and I would like to copy it all to my MBP iTunes.
    They are both running Leopard.
Can anyone please advise on the simplest way to do this?
    Thank you.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your othercomputer is to network the two over ethernet and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them:
Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Mac
OS X 10.5 - Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Another way is to put your original computer into target disk mode and copy the data over Firewire: How to use FireWire target disk mode
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
An alternative method would be to use a utility that syncronises iTunes libraries across computers. You could begin your research in tht direction by having a look at these for instance:
    TuneRanger
    SuperSync
    syncOtunes

  • Sharing music from one itunes account to another

We have all our music on one computer with our original apple id on itunes. My daughter now has her own apple id, laptop and iphone. Can I transfer all the music from one computer to another and link/share it with her itunes account so she can download it onto her iphone?

Music can only be synced to one computer....if done on one machine then you go to another...it will erase all content (to stop piracy).
Have him give you the physical file and you put it on your machine. Then try to play it in iTunes. It will prompt for his username and password (yes he will have to give it to you). It will then authorize your machine for his account as well (meaning you can play music from him). Note you have a limit of number of machines you can authorize and thus you will loose one authorization by doing this. So if you end up getting more machines in your home and/or other devices...you are short one account number now.

  • How to move purchased music from one mac to another

    Hi Everybody
How do I move my purchased music (purchased in Itunes on my Powerbook) to my Mac Mini so that I can enjoy the music on both computers?
I would very much like two answers:
    1. One answer that gives me the solution of how to move only the purchased music?
    2. An answer thats give me a solution to move/sync. the entity Itunes library/folder?
    Thanks in advance :o)

  • 4 ipods sharing music on ONE computer GET one UP the others GO DOWN

We run windows and have 4 ipods connected to the computer all with different log on accounts
We share all our music with each other
    Problem
when we search for a song and click on it (so we can get it in our individual itunes) seems when you log on to a different ipod theirs is all messed up with a exclamation point on the song just previously shared.
Also, I have noticed when I search for a song I find we have up to 6 and at times 10 copies of the same song. Is there a easy way to clean up this mess and still keep all 4 ipods running?

Well, the fiirst option wasn't working because nothing will sync unless iTunes is running. Since iTunes no longer warns you before it starts syncing, when you move your iPod to a different computer, that means any kind of auto-syncing of my music was not an option.
I also got an error message each time I synced with my iMac after removing iPhoto from it (could not find a compatible photo program), which was already getting annoying. Removing Address Book from the iMac did allow me to sync contacts with the PowerBook and not lose them when syncing to the iMac.
Still, this was only 1/3 of what I was trying to accomplish, and I was getting the feeling that I was just fighting against the way this was supposed to work. So I switched to the second option.
This isn't too bad with the help of Sync Pro X, which I already have installed on my PowerBook for daily backups. What I'm doing now is that whenever I update my photos or contacts on the PowerBook, I run a Sync Pro X script that connects to my iMac and copies my changes in those two programs. Then I can do a full, automatic sync of my iPod to my iMac. Under this plan, I'll never try to sync the iPod to the PowerBook -- it's just a one-computer, one-iPod situation.
I've been following this plan for a week, and it's pretty smooth. It's not exactly what I had in mind, but I've come to think that it's the best approach given how the iPod is designed to work.
I hope this little experiment helps someone, if anyone is trying to do what I was doing.
    Cheers,
    -Arlo

  • Sharing Music: using one iTunes account for two users on one MacBook Air

I'm trying to set up my parents on their new MacBook Air and I have set up an account for each of them. To keep their music collection simple & compact I want them both to use one iTunes account on the one machine. Can two separate users work off the same iTunes account on the one machine?
I have tried the Home Sharing function but this seems to be for separate machines rather than accounts.
I have also tried putting the music into a shared folder but this hasn't worked properly for me as the secondary account is able to purchase (but not download) the music correctly from iTunes.
    Any help appreciated. Thank you.

  • Help! Two hard drives sharing music on one player issue...

Hi! I have media on both ext. hard drive and my laptop - I want to gradually delete all duplicate media saved on my laptop (so that all my music is playing from my ext. drive) - but i can't see where my music is saved unless I go into each file individually - which takes ages when trying to identify over 11000 tracks.
Is there any way to identify where the music is saved 'in bulk'? Thought there might be an extra display column, but I can't seem to find one.
    Thank you!

  • Is there a way to sync music from one mac and podcasts from another mac?

So I have all my music (CD Ripped and iTunes Store purchased) on an iMac at home. I sync a shuffle, nano, video and touch with it. Works great with playlists..
Now, I have a MBP that I use for work and have been downloading podcasts to iTunes. Can I use one of my iPods (thinking of the Nano), to sync ONLY the music from the home iMac, and ONLY the podcasts from the work MBP?
    Thanks!

Okay, I said what the ****, and connected the Nano to my MBP.. A breeze, I told it not to sync anything.. Went to the Podcast tab, and told it to sync and overwrite everything.. Seems to work perfectly.. Now lets see what happens when I connect it back to my iMac.. I think I just have to disable the syncing of the podcasts...

  • ITunes Home Sharing misbehaves on one mac in my house

I moved into my wife's old 24" iMac and handed my 20" iMac down to my daughter who is away at school. I have Home Sharing turned on on this Mac and my wife's new 27" iMac. My Apple TV can see her library, but not mine. The Remote App on my iPod touch can see the Apple TV and my Wife's iMac, but not mine. My Mac can see my Wife's iTunes library and her Mac can see my library. Both of the Macs and my iPod all see the Apple TV as an output (Airplay).
I am using the same account everywhere.
I have thrown out all of my iTune prefs, I have reinstalled iTunes. I have even wasted a day reformatting, reinstalling OS X and restoring from Time Machine.
I don't know what else to try.

Colour me flabbergasted! I just finished posting my question and looked down at my iPod to see my Mac Library staring me in the face. I went downstairs and checked the Apple TV and, sure enough, there it was also.
What I had just done was to turn Home Sharing off everywhere and then turn it back on everywhere. If that's all it takes, I cant believe I went through so much angst trying to make it work.

  • Can you Upload music on one MAC then transfer it to another?

I just got my nano today and i have two macs, a g5 and a macbook, i want to know if i can upload the music from my g5 put it on to my new nano and then charge and organize my music on my macbook.... PLEASE help!!!

    Yes you can:

Also there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists directly from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.
