Sharing my music

Hi there,
i am new to itunes, and was just wondering how i share my music whith my frineds (assuming i've paid for it) by just copying and pasting the data directly from my music folder in windows to their external HD or USB pen, when its auto sorted all wierd by itunes.
ie. if i wanted to give someone 5 different songs, they are in 5 different folders under 5 different artists. Then when you grab the file inside the folder, its just the track name and not the artist. Which means i have to copy the folder and the track inside for them. This sounds a little bit of a hassle???
Do any of you know a better way?
Joye

Unfortunately what you are describing is not allowed by various copyright laws. The owners of the rights to those songs sell you the right to use the song on your computer, not to make copies of it for someone else to use.
If your friends are on the same local area network as you, you can allow them to listen to your music shared from iTunes. To do this, both computers must have iTunes running. On your computer, you need to turn on music sharing. Go to the iTunes menu, select Preferences, and select the Sharing pane from the Prefs area. You will see a checkbox for "Share my library on my local network" - check it and select what you want to share - your entire library or only selected playlists. You can require a password if desired.
On your friends computer, in iTunes preferences, check the box for "Look for shared libraries". Close preferences on both computers.
If everything is working right, on your friends computer in iTunes on the left side there are several headings including one new one - SHARED. Beneath that your friend should see the name of your shared music library along with any others on the local network that are also shared. He can then play the music as if it was on his computer.
Information about sharing music is available in the iTunes help system.
Hope this helps you. Good luck.

  • Sharing iTunes Music folder on external HD but not Mobile Applications folder?

I share the iTunes Music folder on an external HD between two separate Mac user accounts. Each user has their own iPhone and syncs within their own user account. All the media for user#1 (books, apps, etc) are in the appropriate folders in this shared iTunes Music folder, which means user #2 is seeing all user #1's stuff in their iPhone sync windows in iTunes.
I don't want to share anything but the actual iTunes library music files between the two Mac user accounts (and the two iPhones). Everything else for each user (apps, books etc.) I want to keep separate. Both users have a separate iTunes store account. Is this possible?

It seems that removing the apps of user#1 from user#2's library (i.e. deleting them in iTunes window, not trashing the actual file) does the trick ... this change updates the user's library .xtml file. Now user#2's apps are syncing only on their phone when they log in and use iTunes. When user#1 logs in iTunes just shows user#1 apps and syncs those.

  • HT2688 I have always shared our music with my wife but under different user id's. I have downloaded all of our ituunes library

we have always shared our music on one laptop but since I've had my iphone I've had my own user id. All of the music I downloaded was lost when I updated my iphone software and I have only been able to restore the music I have bought with my own id. However I've managed to import all of our itunes library to my new laptop but I cannot get it to synch with my iphone. How do I get it to download onto my iphone, I've gone from 865 songs to 74!

  • Please guide me in sharing purchased music. I purchased music, but can't get it to share w/another ipod

Please guide me in sharing purchased music from my account to another ipod

You have posted in the itunes u forum.
Itunes U is where colleges, universities, and museums post educational content for students.
Your question seems to have nothing to do with itunes U.
What do you mean "sharing purchased music from my account to another ipod"?
Do you mean you are trying to sync to your ipod?  If, so just sync it.
If you mean that you are trying to give music to others, then this is not legal.

How do I get this feature working again? I am reluctant to move to iTunes 10.7 because I don't trust Apple at the moment.

    My suggestion:
    1) Always using MAC AIR with the power plug in.
2)Don' let the power level of battory fall under 30% percentage.

  • HT1449 move shared iTunes music folder to a new computer and set up

    Hello;
I am trying to set up 2 new iTunes accounts on our new computer...
In our old we each had an iTunes accounts with our own libraries but the music files were in a shared music folder.
I copied the shared music folder from our old computer on to an external drive and then copied it to Users/shared/itunes music
I then pointed both new Itunes to that location for the music but when I open itunes in both it does not show anything..
I also copied the old iTunes folder to each new account
Why are the 2 new iTunes acct not seeing the music?
I do not care so much about playlists etc..just wanted the music transferred over in the shared file..(music combined Itunes purchases plus ripped CD..)
    Thanks
    mac

You are encountering one of the major disadvantages with having library files in one place and media in another.  You do not get iTunes to see moved media by changing media storage location in preferences.  That only changes the location for anything added from that point on, it does not get iTunes to actively search the new location.  This problem is really amplified by you moving media to a new drive.
If it were just one user you could use iTunes to do the moving by using consolidate/organize your media to the new location and the library doing that would work, but the other one wouldn't.
Try this.  Play a track.  iTunes will ask you to find the file it should use.  Find it in its new home.  iTunes should ask if you want it to find others and see if it can.  This only works if you have iTunes set to automatically organize your library.

  • Several computers sharing the music library stored on a network disk: howto

    Hi,
We currently have iTunes set up on a (laptop) computer. The music folder location is on a network disk (NAS). Everything has been working fine.
We recently purchased two more laptops for other family members and would like to set up the iTunes for those computers to use the same existing music folder. Is this possible? I understand that we must authorize all computers using the library to be able to play purchased music.
So far we have synced all our ipods using the one and only computer. In the future each of us will use their own laptop for syncing. Will this cause any problems regarding to the shared music library?
I guess that the playlists are stored in the itunes files, not in the music library. Due to this the playlists must be created on the new computers after the itunes installation.
    Best regards,
    ikl

You are most of the way there. The only issue will be that anything done by one machine will not be automatically updated to others. Files deleted from NAS by one machine will not be available to others anymore leading to ! next to track names if in libraries on other machines.
Files added by one machine will have to be added to the libraries of the other machines using 'add file to library' or 'add folder to library' options on menu.
Podcast subscriptions should be only files that will duplicate on NAS. Podcast subscriptions are individual to each library even if stored to same location. The files themselves well get numbered. The library will know which file to use. This allows episodes to be deleted without affecting other users.

  • Sharing Itunes Music Library among Multiple User Accounts on One Mac

I have 3 user accounts set up on the computer and one itunes account authorized on all 3 user accounts. I have the music library files placed in the shared folders and permissions set up to allow all users to read & write the music. However, only my user account (the main account with admin privileges) is able to access the music unless I log into my user account, run iTunes with sharing enabled, then exit to the login window. Then the other users can access the shared iTunes library. I have preferences setup to use the same library folders.
An earlier version of iTunes used to allow me to do this, and iPhoto still does allow a similar setup with my photo library.
Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

I have an iMac at home with 4 users. I've recently struggled with this and thought I had a working solution ...
I created a new iTunes folder off of root. I then logged in as each user and set the path on their Advanced Tab to /iTunes/iTunes Music/ and dragged and dropped their local iTunes Music folders (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/) into iTunes. This copies files that aren't there but skips anything that might be in two peoples library.
Then iTunes 8.1 came out and now things are broken. I've rebuilt the index by doing an Add to Library but my Podcasts don't download any more. 8-(

  • 2 Users Sharing one Music Library

    All,
We have our iTunes Music Library on
    Shared Documents\Shared Music.
XP "User A" can access and see all the songs.
For XP "User B" we did:
iTunes, From the File menu, choose Add Folder to Library (Shared Documents\Shared Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
XP "User BA" can access, but does not see all the songs.
What are the steps involved to allow 2 (or more) XP Users to access one iTunes Library?

    yep.
iTunes is not multi-user. is sad....... here are some other things to consider as well:
apple is propriety and vertically integrated.
apple condemned microsoft and intel. and yet these two companies helped them out later in order to survive.
apple has no choice. there are not many software or hardware peripherals available.
Apple is propriety and still promotes closed systems (e.g. iPOD propriety iTunes. limited hardware support, etc.)
Apple is simplier and less functional. (e.g. no mouse right click..)
apple is still at a premium. (significantly more expensive than equivalent pc)
apple pc's weighs more than other pc's.
Apple provide not choice / options. you can not pick and build your own….
Apple copies and does not innovate (e.g. apple name, GUI, trash, etc.)
apple software is in many cases less functional than software that runs on windows.
apple developer community is very small compared to windows. e.g. go to a software store and see the ratio of apple vs windows compatible software.
apple owners' emotional attachment far outweighs the technical reality

  • How do I use home sharing for music and apps from different devices that already have Apple IDs?  We have music from CDs and iTunes.

We have a iPhone 3G used as an touch, a 4S and 2 5s that I would like to share the music and possibly the pictures but i dont know how to set it up since we all have our own Apple IDs.  Please help.

Do you have a computer. You can't share music or apps from one mobile device to another. To share photos you need to use photo stream shared albums.

  • Sharing iTunes music between users on the same PC?

So I have nearly 9000 tracks in my iTunes folders under 'My Music'. Other users of this PC cannot see my files. What's the best way to transfer all my music to a shared area on the PC so that other users can play the music? Furthermore, how do I configure iTunes so that, going formard, it uses the shared area by default, in addition to users' own 'My Music' areas? I don't want to have to upload/download to my personal area everytime, then copy to the shared area? I guess what I'm asking is: "What's the most flexible way to configure iTunes for sharing on the same PC?". Please share your knowledge, experience & wisdom!

  • Shared Photo & Music Libraries for Multiple Users on Same Machine

I've setup multiple users on a single machine and I'm trying to have a common shared folder for photos (w/ Adobe PSE) and music (w/ iTunes). First, on photos:
-Tried setting up a folder on /users/shared/pictures. How can I "share" the main folder and have permissions carry down to all subfolders and files?
-I've given the other user permission, but when logged on, Finder window only displays icon, not preview of image? In cover flow mode, image shows up, though?
-Is this the best approach or is /me/public the better way or /me/pictures (shared) a better way?
    And then on music:
-recommendations on best approach to have a single library with multiple users and multiple iTunes accounts.
    Thanks in advance

The iTunes sharing is for sharing music between computers on a network.

  • Sharing one music library between two users on a mac

I want to set my wife up as a separate user on my mac and share my music file with her so we no longer mix up our iPhone apps. I don't want a second copy on my hard drive. I've tried one method on here HT1203 but it makes a second copy and fills up my hard drive. I do not want to share the whole media library just the music. There must be an easy way to use two iPhones with separate user ids on one Mac so we don't mix up our apps. I would have though that the great Apple would have just sorted this out when you plug in a different device.

First, back up your computer in case it does things you don't like.  I'm not testing this on my computer.
You'll have to deactivate iTunes managing your music (deselect in preferences having iTunes organize your music and copying it to your media folder when adding to iTunes).  Do the same for iTunes in her account.
Go to your iTunes folder and drag the music folder in Media to the Shared Users folder at the top level of the drive.  You may also need to get info on the music folder and change permissions on it and all enclosing items so she has permission to use it too.
It is just possible your copies of iTunes may track all the moves. It would be good if it does.  I know I have manage music disabled on my computer and iTunes is good at tracking when I move things around in Finder, unlike when iTunes is totally terrible at tracking when you let it manage music.  If it doesn't track then you may have to face rebuilding your libraries using the music in the new location.
You will have to come to an agreement in deleting music.  Fortunately in the manually manage mode you are using if you delete a track in your iTunes it will not delete the actual file.  You have to manually delete it in Finder which is good because she may still be using the file.
If one of you renames the file, it will affect both. Haven't tried this but in theory you would each retain your individual ratings and last played.
Let us know if it works.
Edit: Found this; compare with my concept piece above:
