  • MP3 files crash wirelessly shared connection

I've been struggling with this for a while, and have just found a solution, but would appreciate an explanation if anyone can provide it.
I have a couple of Windows PCs running iTunes 7.1. The library is stored on a networked disk, but is "owned" by a PC on a wired connection to the router. I have no problems at all on this PC.
The second PC shares the same library, and is on a wireless connection. It will play some files, but others cause a "network stalled" message. This seems to freeze iTunes, and kills the network connection (I have to restart wireless to get any connectivity).
What I have found is that this problem only occurs with MP3 files (some, not all) ripped from CDs. By converting (not re-ripping) these files to AAC, the problem goes away. All the files were originally ripped using iTunes, so the problem is not caused by third party encoders.
I have no particular issue with converting all my MP3s to AACs (in fact I set th eprocess going last night), but I would be interested to know if anybody has seen this problem before, and to understand the root cause.
    iTunes   Windows XP

Thanks Niels, I was giving up hope! What Sonos does is scan the tags and build an index of audio files on multiple shares, then loads that index into the Zone Players (Sonos term) that accesses the file and plays them. I can have multiple wired or wireless audio file sources and Sonos can access them all (<= 16). It uses a mesh WiFi to synchronize the sound reproduction amongst many zone players, I have two and a third on the way. Zones can be joined into a unified single zone, that is all players running together, or broken off into sub groups or individual zones, each playing their own music.
So the index Sonos holds contains tags used for Audio file identification and then a URL which identifies the location, this can be on any one of up to sixteen shares, Mac, PC, Unix, Linux, SAN, etc. What happens with the Mac is that suddenly a tune that played previously, no longer does, and this is because iTunes moved the file, or changed the name, so the Sonos pointer becomes invalid.
It is looking more and more that iTunes cannot be used which is a shame because it runs on Macs and PCs, and we use both. I need iTunes to totally respect my naming conventions, NEVER move a file, permit ad-hoc directory refresh and allow a single audio file repository to be shared. By its cross-platform nature it would seem ideally suited for this, but I am beginning to get tired of trying to make it work.
Complicating the issue is that I am converting hundreds of LPs and Tapes for which I need to manually create directories. Last night for example I found I suddenly had FOUR Chopin directories! All named slightly differently. Won't do...
So any help will be greatly appreciated, I like iTunes but I do not think for much longer...

  • Sharing MP3 files

Is there an update in the works that will allow MP3 files to
be shared with other? I can share midi files which are not as good
a quality. I have not tried a .wav file yet.

    Hello lrcroft1,
Thanks for your post. We are not currently working on an
update to allow for sharing mp3 formats, we use to allow SWF
playback but it was blocked because of security concerns.
We do have a black list, MP3, AAC, MOV, RAR, WMV, OGG, FLV,
XVID, DIVX, TTF, DFONT, OTF, TGZ, 7Z, SIT, EXE, DLL, JAR, WAR, CAB,
JS, VB, BAT, CHM, CMD, COM, CPL, CRT, HLP, HTA, INF, INS, ISP, JSE,
LNK, MDB, MS, PCD, PIF, RETG, SCR, SCT, SHS, VB, WS, SH, CSH, TCSH,
KSH, BASH, ZSH, RM, DAT, AVI, MPG, WAV, CDA, VY1, WMA
You should be able to upload documents other than these
formats. Uploaded docs can be downloaded and preview will be
generated if we are able to do so.
    Thanks for your feedback.
    Cheers,
    Pete

  • Unable to change my mp3 file to podcast

I can change my individual mp3 files to podcasts in iTunes10 by setting the "Media Kind", but new iTunes 11 does not do anything. This must be a bug.
    Please fix it.

Thank you for the link but it can't be used in Moutain Lion because Web Sharing is not available in System Preferences -> Sharing.
I hope there are other solutions. This is really ******* me off.

  • Can you save an mp3 file that you receive as an attachment to an email?

Can you save an mp3 file you receive as an attachment to an email?

    Irwinwilliam-
With other attachments, you can press and hold on the attachment icon.  One of the options that may appear is "Open In".  Choosing that, any App that is capable of reading the attachment should show up as a choice.  When opening the document that way, a copy is transferred to the App.  I have not tried with an MP3 file.
For MP3, I think the Music App should be a choice.  If so, the file should then appear with your other music.
If an inappropriate App appears in "Open In", you may be able to use it as a conduit to transfer the attachment to your computer.  Run iTunes on your computer with the iPad connected.  Select the iPad under DEVICES, and click on Apps at the top of the window.  Scroll down to File Sharing and select that App.  If successful, your document will appear to the right in the Documents window, where you can select it and Save As.

  • ITunes shows mp3 Files in library but does not play them?

    Hi,
I am having trouble with my library. I have a number of tracks in my iTunes folder which show up in my library, however when I click on them, nothing at all happens. The Diamond does not move and the track does not play.
This is odd, as other tracks on the album, and which are included in the album folder do play, but iTunes has decided it won't play some of the tracks.
Interestingly, the tracks it does play all show up with the album artwork if I view the folder, however the ones it does not play only show up with the MP3 file icon. And just to throw another twist in, I can play the files which iTunes wont play, in cover flow...
So how do I gt iTunes to play all the songs again? Will rebuilding my library work?
And finally, iTunes has categorised a load of album files in an "unknown" folder, despite these files having full artist, album, genre etc information in their tag. Can I get iTunes to put these into the correct albums somehow?
    Many thanks!

As for the files not playing, you might want to check their permissions. Select the mp3 files in your finder, go to File>Get Info, look under Sharing & Permissions, and make sure you have Read & Write
    privileges.

  • ITunes Artwork with no embedded covers in the MP3 files ?

    Hi
    New iTunes user,
I have a question is it possibly to have artwork displayed in iTunes without having embedded artwork images actually in the MP3 files ?
I use Windows Media Center and WMP12/7MC just uses the Folder.jpg Hi-Res cover image in each albums folder.
It appears iTunes only shows any covers if I embed covers in to the MP3 files which I'd rather not do.
What are my options if any?
    Many thanks.

I have my entire music collection ripped using iTunes and stored on a Mac mini running Windows. It is all in Apple Lossless format and shared with Windows Media Player and Media Center which can play the Apple Lossless files thanks to a solution I came up with along with assistance from Milenko Mitrovic.
While I do deliberately chose to embed 600x600 pixel artwork in each track (disk space is cheap), I also put a folder.jpg of the same artwork in each album folder for the benefit of WMP and Media Center.
The steps I use to do this are as follows.
    1. Rip the CD using iTunes
    2. Tell iTunes to download album artwork for that Album. Life is made much easier if you only do one album at a time.
    3. Look in your Music folder for the iTunes folder and look in that for the Album Artwork folder
    4. In the Album Artwork folder will be a Download folder and in that various subfolders eventually leading to a file called something like A392573AD3DE300C-45855BDAB6F38792.itc2 by checking the file creation date/time you will be able to confirm it corresponds with the one you just downloaded.
    5. Use the free utility bitmaprip available here http://mark0.net/soft-bitmaprip-e.html to 'extract' the real artwork from inside Apple's proprietary itc2 file. You can then move this to the iTunes album folder for that album and name it folder.jpg
If you then like I do, want to make this artwork embedded, then do the following extra steps.
    6. Select one of the tracks for the album
    7. Copy the artwork to the clipboard
    8. Clear the downloaded artwork
    9. Delete any folders left in your Album Artwork folder so they do not confuse you for the next album
    10. Select all the tracks for the album
    11. Paste the artwork in

  • Unable to drag mp3 files to a sd card

there was already a discussion about getting music onto an sd card in order to play in a car, but the replies didn't work for me.
    here's the situation:
my sd card is usually used in the Kodak camera i inherited.
it currently has two files--DCIM & Misc.
When i try to drag mp3 files to this sd card, it says "cannot be modified."
in Get Info it says the format for this sd card is MS-DOS (FAT16)
under Sharing & Permissions it says "read only"
    suggestions and solutions sought.

I have this problem as well, with most of my songs in chinese/japanese characters ...now my stuff will play, but it all shows up as just blocks and squares for the names, making it hard-nearly impossible to know what song is playing, I hope someone can help

  • How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone?

How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone?  I can physically copy the tunes as mp3's but the phone does not seem to be able to play all of them.   Do I need to copy an entire album or can I just pick & choose individual songs?   The phone is question is an LG running who knows what for an operating system.

AAC is Advanced Audio Coding.  Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD).  More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder).  Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button.  Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder.  After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version."  You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding.  Hopefully your phone will play that.

  • How can I put my mp3 files into my iTunes library? Every time I download a song from a website and try to drag it to my library, it won't add on. How can I fix this?

Back then when I had the older update with iTunes i never had this problem with trying to put my mp3 files of music into my iTunes library. Now it doesn't want to be put into the library. Once I try to drag the music file to the iTunes library nothing happens, it just keeps showing a cancellation sign with my mouse. So how can I fix this?

    Hi William.
The problem is probably that the index is corrupt and you need to completely re-create it rather than rebuilding individual mailboxes. I have no idea what the situation really is now after having tinkered with the contents of ~/Library/Mail/, though, so the following procedure may or may not work.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Music plays in iTunes, but NONE of the MP3 files are visible in Explorer

This one is a bit of a mystery.
When I open up any of the folders in my iTunes Music folder, they appear to be empty. No MP3 files are listed at all. Yet, iTunes can still play the music.
    Here are the details:
    1. I keep my iTunes media content on an external hard drive, and iTunes is working fine. Some albums have disappeared but most of my music shows up in iTunes and plays properly. Therefore, the music files have to be there.
    2. When I right-click on my iTunes folder in Windows Explorer and choose "properties" I get a result: Explorer scans the folder and tells me I have 98.8 gigabytes in 18,279 files, (though when I look around, I see that a LOT of albums are missing). Yet, Windows Explorer is finding a lot of files even though I can’t see them.
    3. However, when I right-click on a folder inside my iTunes folder and choose “properties” (the folders for each artist and for each album are still there and still visible) I get weird results. It says that there is some small amount of data in each folder (27 kilobytes or 35 kilobytes) and some random number of files (2, or 5, or 6). It doesn't matter how many songs are actually on that album, it just gives me this small unrelated number. Yet, I can’t see any files listed at all.
    4. Under the View tab in Folder Options, everything looks fine to me. I don’t see a setting there that would hide MP3 files.
    5. I tried checking “show hidden files” and all that sort of thing, but nothing changed.
    6. I did a virus scan and it revealed no threats.
    7. I also went into the Command Prompt and used the dir command to see what was there. I could see all of my folders including my iTunes music folder. I have pictures, Word documents, Excel files, etc on this external folder as well. I can see all of these files no problem. I can also see all the Artist and Album folders in my iTunes music folder. However, even using the dir command, I can’t see any songs – there are no MP3 files visible. I reveal hidden and system files (dir /ah), I then see some files like these:
    desktop.ini
    AlbumArtSmall.jpg
    Folder.jpg
    8. I tried to play the music from VLC media player and Windows Media Player, but that doesn’t work because the files can’t be seen by those programs either.
    9. However, when I open iTunes, all the music is there and playable. Only iTunes sees the music.
Anyone have any idea what could have happened? The one thing I changed recently is that I ran the iTunes Genius function. It scanned my music and did what it was supposed to do, and it worked fine. I doubt that Genius could have done this to my external hard drive. I’m guessing I picked up a computer virus somehow, but my virus scan doesn’t reveal anything.
Anyone have any ideas about what is going on?
    Thanks!
    Doug

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!
You were absolutely right, Rob. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I've got nearly 200 Artist folders with 1,000 or so Album folders - and they are all completely empty of music.
But in the middle of that long list of folders, there is an innocuous looking folder labelled "Music." I looked inside that folder and, bam, there they were - all 92 gigabytes of my missing music files in a complete copy of all those Artist and Album folders.
I thought I was going crazy! How could iTunes be playing all this music when as far as I could tell, it had all vanished? But there it was. As you said, iTunes had simply moved it down a level in the folder hierarchy and then didn't delete all the original folders.
And as I scanned the original list of Artist folders, I also saw the other folders: Podcasts, Audiobooks, iPod Games, etc. I hadn't even noticed them before. I just assumed that all the folders I was looking at were Artist folders.
Thank you so much, Rob. I'm not sure I would have ever solved this "case of the missing music files" on my own. I would have continued to bang my head against "hidden files" settings and all that. Perhaps I would have tracked these files down by looking for their location using "Get Info" in iTunes. But maybe not. I had no reason to suspect that I didn't know where the music files were: after all, the Artist and Album folders were all right there. They were just empty! I was so focused on the folders being empty, it never occured to me that iTunes had created exact duplicate folders somewhere else.
Do you know if iTunes had any practical reason for leaving all those empty folders behind? I'm just wondering if it is safe to manually delete them. I noticed, for example, that they aren't completely empty. They contain hidden files of Album Art and various ini files. I wouldn't want to delete them and then find out that I just deleted all my album art and a bunch of important settings files.
Thanks again. You saved my neck with this one.

  • My iTunes library is on an old computer. Not enough memory to consolidate the associated MP3 files. Transferred library to new computer. How can I add the MP3's without having to re load every file / folder again? Thanks.

Hello, I'm trying to transfer my iTunes library from an old computer with small hard drive to a new windows 8 laptop.  Much of my library consists of links to MP3/ 4 files etc but there isn't enough harddrive memory to consolidate the files into iTunes music folder.  I downloaded the library onto an external hardrive and have installed it on the new computer.  All files that were in iTunes music (now iTunes Media file) work fine.  I have transferred over all my MP3 files but of course iTunes library wont play the file as there is no established link to the file and it asks whether iTunes should locate the file. I don't want to have to import every MP3 file/ folder all over again and then delete the unlinked entries in iTunes as this will take way too much time.  Is there a way to sync all of these MP3 files to iTunes automatically or do I need to go back to start and somehow try and put the library back onto the hard drive and get the files consolidated to that from my old computer?  Any help most gratefully recieved. Thanks.

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

  • An mp3 file on my computer will not import to itunes by either the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method.  Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  My OS is Windows 7.

I purchased an mp3 from a private website on my laptop.  The itunes library i sync ipod to is on my desktop, so i copied the mp3 onto a flash drive and then into my desktop in the Downloads folder and Desktop folder as well as the itunes music folder, 3 places.  I opened itunes on the desktop and read the instructions for importing music that's already in my computer.  Neither the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method works.  I've tried both ways over and over.  Cannot figure out what the problem is.  I do note that the name of the mp3 file doesn't show the .mp3 extension, it appears as simply it's title, Eating Healthy, without any extension at all.  Could the filename be the problem, or do you have any other idea what I'm doing wrong?  My OS is Windows 7, using IE9.  Thanks.
ADDENDUM AFTER READING ANOTHER DISCUSSION HERE:  I have now tried right clicking the song in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, clicking itunes.  The mp3 plays in itunes but does not add to the library.

I don't have a Recently Added playlist.  However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes.  I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet.  Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there.  Thanks for your help.
