Sharing on iCloud as read only ?

As a teacher I've used Google Drive as a way of sharing files for years.  The fact that a folder on google drive can be shared in such a way that the files are read-only, and can't be modified by the students, makes this an invaluable tool.
I would love to be able to share my keynote slides with iCloud, but the person who views the document is able to edit it.
Can this please be changed in the future, a toggle switch to make the document 'read only'.

Just found this discussion. The lack of read-only settings for shared iCloud documents somehow amuses me...
It makes me wonder whether the person responsible for iCloud development has ever used this feature in theirs work. Honestly, sharing the document and asking "please, don't edit it" all the time makes me feel a little non-professional.
Today every time I want to send a file to windows user I must convert it to Excel or so and do it every time I make a change. If only could I just send a link and the receiver would be able to see the actual version anytime they click the link but couldn't change the document itself.
Sent feedback to Apple. Have doubts they ever read them.

    Hello skiboat2,
Because the permissions have been changed, you will need to put them back to what they were before. One of the ways to do that is to reinstall your OS X to make sure that everything permission wise gets put back to what it needs to be to work properly. Based of to the operating system that you say you have, I have provided the steps for reinstalling Snow Leopard. When doing this, it does not overwrite your personal data; it only touches the operating system.

  • OS 10.5 Sharing – Files appear as "Read Only" – SOLUTION!

I have been having problems with sharing files between two macs since upgrading to 10.5 Leopard. Files and catalogs were available on both machines and both were set to "read & write" however files would only open as "read only" and files could not be saved between macs.
After an entire day of trying to find an answer (and talking to Apple Care for hours) I have found the solution. And it's a very simple fix. The UUID needs to be changed on the computer giving you trouble.
Here's the solution from the original post below:
In OS X 10.5, you can change the UUID for your account by going to the "Accounts" system preferences and clicking the lock to authenticate. Then right-click (control-click) your account name and select "Advanced Options." Then click the "Create New" button next to the UUID field, and a new number will be generated. This should be done on the computer that you cannot properly connect to, and not on the computer you are connecting from. All this will do is provide a new identifier for your account when you are logging in remotely, and should clear problems with authentication and permissions mismatches.
    Hope this helps!
Here's the original post from MacFixIt (I am including the entire post so that anyone searching for these phrases or error messages can find it quickly):
Apple Discussion poster "Thomas Kranz1" writes:
"I am suddenly getting this message when I try to copy a file from my new MacBook Pro to my PowerBook running 10.4.9. 'You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named [file I am trying to transfer] (stop, continue). I hit continue and get the error message: 'The item [that I am transferring] contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?' I say continue and get the error: 'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.' My network was working fine until today. I can copy fine to all other computers on my network. But not this one."
When OS X transfers data between computers, you first log into the remote system and mount a readable or writable sharepoint from the remote system. Then when you transfer files they should be given ownership and permissions based on the account you're using on the remote computer (not the current computer). This ensures you can access the files anytime and from anywhere as long as you use the same credentials to log into the computer containing them.
When problems with permissions in file transfers occur, you should first check your sharepoints to ensure the account you are using has read-and-write access to the share. To do this, open the "Sharing" system preferences and select the "File Sharing" service. Then ensure the sharepoint is listed in the "Shared Folders" list and then give the username you're logging in with both "Read & Write" permissions. If you are logging in from a PC, then click the "Options" button and enable "Share files and folders using SMB" and then select the account you wish to use to log in. Clicking "Done" should allow you to log into the system using the specified credentials.
If the system keeps presenting insufficient privileges errors even after supplying appropriate credentials, the problem may be with how the computer is authenticating the account being used. For network directory authentication, OS X uses a "Universally Unique Identifier" or "UUID" number to identify user accounts, and if there is a problem with the UUID not matching, you may still be able to log in locally to the remote computer but may have permissions problems when using the same credentials remotely. Apple started implementing network directories that use UUIDs in OS X 10.3, and in 10.5 they're required, since Apple changed from the NetInfo authentication technologies to "Open Directory," which is built for network directory authentication and implements UUIDs.
In OS X 10.5, you can change the UUID for your account by going to the "Accounts" system preferences and clicking the lock to authenticate. Then right-click (options-click) your account name and select "Advanced Options." Then click the "Create New" button next to the UUID field, and a new number will be generated. This should be done on the computer that you cannot properly connect to, and not on the computer you are connecting from. All this will do is provide a new identifier for your account when you are logging in remotely, and should clear problems with authentication and permissions mismatches.
For people having problems with copying files to a 10.4 machine, it may help to ensure ownership on the shared resource is properly set. To do this, launch the terminal and type the following command, followed by a single space:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`
NOTE: The command uses "grave accent" marks (`), which is the character under the "tilde" next to the "1", and not apostrophes or single-quotes.
After this has been typed (with the space following it), drag the shared folder to the terminal and the full path to the folder should complete. Then press enter and supply your password to complete the command. When this has been run, try copying the files again.

    David,
Of course the files are checked in; otherwise I wouldn't be able to create a configuration on them and base a workarea on the configuration in order to download the files.
Here's my problem: I check-in and out files while developing a release. A release for me is a set of (checked-in) objects and folders grouped in a checked-in configuration.
Once I'm finished I want to download the release. In order to do this I base a 'DOWNLOAD' workarea on the configuration that represents the release.
Then I download the DOWNLOAD workarea; and have all files in the release on my file system. But I do not want them to be READ-ONLY !!, since the folders and files that make up my application have to be moved and copied around a couple of servers using FTP scripts and this is a whole lot more complicated when the files and folders are read-only.
If this cannot be disabled than Oracle SCM is a lot less attractive for our way of doing SCM... although I have been able to adjust all my Java FTP classes so that write-access is enabled on all file and folders after download and before publishing the application to all servers.
By the way I use the Java API of Oracle SCM to download the contents of the DOWNLOAD workarea.

  • Sharing a view in read only mode

    Hi,
I am new in this domain. I have made an application in which I made two local development projects. Through that I am using views of one into another with the help of "Used WebDynpro Components" concept. After deploying, I have got these two views.
But the problem is that I want that view in read only mode which I have taken from other local development project and this view was not in read only mode in its local development projects.
Please provide me the solution in detail so that I can understand easily.

    Hi Manish,
Say View1 is the view in main Component,View2 is the view in used Component.  Exactly follow these steps.
    Create a context attribute <b>enable </b>of type String in used Component's controller,used Component's Interface controller, View1 and View2.
Using context mapping map these attributes  View2 ->  used Component's controller->  used Component's Interface controller -> View1 ( if you don't know how to map double click the  the Main component: Data navigation modeler is opened; In  the diagram, right side select small arrow  first select  View1 drag to used Component's Interface controller,in the wizard select right hand side <b>enable </b>attribute drag to left side)
you can map similarly View2 ->  used Component's controller->  used Component's Interface controller.
In View2 create another variable <b>edit </b>of boolean type.
Open Layout tab of View2, bind this attribute to enable property of all the UI elements which you want to disable.
In  implementation tab of View1 in method wdDoInit() write this code
    wdContext.currentContextElement.setEnable("display");
In  implementation tab of View2 in method wdDoInit() write this code
    if(wdContext.currentContextElement.getEnable().equalIgnoreCase("display"))
    wdContext.currentContextElement.setEdit(false);
    else
    wdContext.currentContextElement.setEdit(true);
    Hope this helps for you.
    Best regards,
    Siva

  • Read-only access when saving metadata to file from Adobe Lightroom on a MAC OS to Windows shared drive

We have a group of 5 people editing and indexing photos to a shared drive on a windows server, everyone has its own catalog and working on different folders to avoid any locking conflicts.
The windows computers don't have any problems but the Mac's don't write the updated metadata to all files because they get the message "Photos have read-only access".
    The environment is the following:
    2x Macs workstations running:
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    - iMAC with MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    3x Windows Workstations:
    - Windows 7
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    Server:
    - Shared drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard
I have searched the internet, no one has this problem with this exact setup but I have tried all the solutions I found, namely:
    1. Connect to the network drive with cifs:// protocol
    2. Change the settings of the nsmb.conf for 'smb1_only' protocol
    3. Mount the drive manually by command line
    Nothing worked, any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issue and wonder if Lightroom 6 will resolve it.  I  tried AFP, SMB2, SMB3 and they all failed to save metadata randomly. When I use NFS from OS X then it works fine but it's a little slower than SMB and it's not as native as the mount via AFP or SMB, so it's harder to maintain.     My server is a FreeNAS 9.2 (FreeBSD) which is running Samba, Netatalk and native NFS.

  • Server 2003: make user template with read-only access for shared folders

I have need to make a type of user (like Administrator, Power User, Mobile User, User, etc.) that has read-only acess to shared folders. So when I make a new user and assign the "read-only user" template I wish to have, the user can open files
in the shared folders on the server, but not edit, save or delete files. Other users can and should remain able to edit, save & delete.
Before I dig in, is this even possible?

You could create a Group called ReadOnly, and set that to have Read on the ACLs of the relevant files or folders.
Make that template user a member of that group.
As long as they are not also a member of another group that gives them higher permissions, this would work.
Otherwise set the ReadOnly group to deny Write, which would over ride any other permission set.
    So,
    Folder A
    ACL:
    ReadOnly : R
    Users: Read/Write
If a user is a member of Users & ReadOnly, they would get read/write to Folder A. As permissions are cumulative.
    If you did the following:
    Folder A
    ACL:
    ReadOnly : R
    ReadOnly: Deny Write
    Users: Read/Write
The users in ReadOnly would be denied write, as it overrides the cumulative permissions.

  • Bug? Folders created by transmission is read-only to Windows file sharing

It's a nice thing that transmission is supported in the LenovoEMC version of firmware. The thing is, folders created by this transmission are read-only, which means file can't be added, deleted nor modified from Windows file sharing (They are still be deleted with transmission though, but that's irrelavant).
From my experience, this issue is caused by the value of unmask not properly set up in the settings.json file. This file can be modified when transmission is not running, but I didn't find a way to stop transmission from running / restart itself even after being killed from SSH.
    Please help.

You have to have root access (which will void your warranty) to modify settings.json, that's why I wish Lenovo can come up with an official solution.
If you don't mind viod the warranty, then after you stop transmission, you can log in as root via putty, then use nano to modify settings.json as mentioned below:

  • Sharing & permissions suddenly read only on files and folders

Almost all folders and files including home folder have suddenly had their sharing and permissions privileges switched to read only
No indication of why this happened. Tedious to go through each item, enter password, add parties and change to read and write.
    Is there a quick fix?

Run Verify Disk in Disk Utility.
If it's just your home folder where this is happening, reset home folder permissions.

  • Shared Computer over Ethernet is creating read-only files and folders

    Hi,
I have set up a ssecond mac connected to my G4 via ethernet connection. We are both using my mac as the main computter and both working from one folder on it. BUT when the second computer creates a folder or saves a job into this folder the permissions are set for them to 'read only'.
How do you make it so whatever they create is all read and write.
The second mac is logining is not as the administrator but as a normal user. I do not want them to have full access.

    Hello DH-Studio
Hi, this is still causing me problems, is there another way?
Sharepoints does work howerver the other way to do this that does not involve using UNIX commands is to run Server Software such as Mac OSX Server.
The 10 User licenced version is affordable and it has an excellent GUI called the Workgroup Manager which can setup sharepoints, users & groups permissions very easily. It has many other benefits.
Other than that their are UNIX commands such as umask. However I have no experience using umask and I understand it make global changes to your system. I would avoid using it.
You also could setup a crontab rule that changes the permissions on the shared folder every minute. In your terminal use the following commands
    sudo nano /etc/crontab
    You will then see
using your arrow key move the cursor down to area indicated in my example then enter the following information
    */1 <press tab twice> * <tab> * <tab> * <tab> * <tab> root <tab> chmod -R 777 /shared
it should look like the following
replace "/share" with the actual path to your sharedfolder
Then close the file with "control +O", then "return" then "control X"
Now any file that is saved to your share folder will be readwrite to everyone every minute. This is a clumsy method but it works.

  • Fat32 Shared from Mac - Folders Always Read Only?

I have a Mac Book Pro running 10.5.8 with a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition. I set up Windows Sharing so a computer running WIndows Vista can share this FAT32 volume on my Mac. The basic networking works fine, and I can open, edit and save C files in the Microsoft Visual C++ environment I'm using.
But, the compiler attempts to create temporary files during compilation and this fails. It complains that the folder is write protected. This is substantiated by the fact that when I show the folder properties for the folder in question, it shows "Read Only" in the "Attributes" section.
Thing is, using Notepad, I can create a new file and save it on these "read-only" folders without any errors.
So I'm mystified. Any thoughts on why the compiler wouldn't be able to create the temporary files?
    Looking forward to a solution,
    Mark

I am posting back here because I discovered the cause of the second problem mentioned in the above post. IE: the problem of misbehaving folders in windows.
First, some background. The folder structure is rather large and complex, so I created it using applescript and a text file with outline levels. Unfortunately, some of the outline titles (which became folder titles) ended in a space.
Apparently windows does not like folders (files too?) to end with a space. While this never affected my Mac, when I transfered the data and structure to the PC it went haywire. I did notice that the duplicate folders were not identical as I first thought, but rather were generated without the trailing space(s). Now it is just a matter of removing all the trailing spaces and it appears that windows can handle the folders.
However, every folder I put on the PC still says it is read only and I can't seem to change that. Any help?

  • Shared folder read-only for other users

We setup a new iMac with three accounts for members of the family. Two have admin rights. We installed Quicken Essentials 2010 for Mac, and put the Quicken data file in the Users/Shared/Quicken folder. Everything worked great for user #1 who copied the file to the shared Quicken folder.
User #2 (also an admin) was not able to open Quicken, as an error stating the file was read-only. I checked permissions, and set user1 and user2 with read/write and everyone with read/write. Basically, all permissions on that data file are read/write for everyone.
That still did not work. Then, I set user2 as the owner. Now, user2 can use Quicken and the file, but user1 cannot. Same error.
How do we get it so that files in the Shared folder are really shared and accessible to everyone?

The solution that I discovered to work: Place your quicken data file(s) on an external drive (or create a partition if you only have access to a single hard drive) and have permissions on that drive (o volume) set to "ignore ownership on this volume" It works for me. Both accounts can now access my single quicken data file. To set the permissions on a drive/volume, select the drive or volume, choose "get info" from the file menu and at the bottom of the get info window mark the box "Ignore ownership on this volume".

  • Shared folder files open as read only even though they are set up as read write

Hello, I've recently purchased a iMac to work alongside my mac book pro. Primarily, i want this for ease of use at home and as a 'back up' to my pro should anything happen.
I have a number of folders and files on my pro that I wish to access on the iMac and have set up shared folders to enable this with a new profile and read/write permissions. This all works fine until I open the document, make changes then find that I have to save as a different name as the files open as 'read only'?
Is there anything I've missed? I would of expected 'read/write' permissions to enable me to save files as edited?
Any help appreciated otherwise, I'll have to resort to copying files between machines which would be a major dissapointment!
    Thanks in advance

Found the solution...basically the permissions are not automatically cascaded down to sub folders and files so you have to do the following... modified from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2743520?start=0&tstart=0
On the folder that you would like to change, select the Get Info and then click on the cogwheel at the bottom of the Get Info dialog.
Click on the menu pick "Apply to enclosed items ..." and confirm the warning message.
Then the same read & write permissions are applied to all the subfolders of the selected folder.

how do I unlock this process

Hello mbennjr, if you have problem with update or permissions firefox the better way is to '''download and install the new version'''.
    1. Download a copy of the latest firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    2. '''Trash''' the current Firefox application to do a clean install.
    3. Install the version that you have downloaded.
Do not select to remove your personal data, your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Mac Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks or other personal data.
