Sharing one iTunes account

We have one computer at home.  My kids and I share one iTunes account.  I would like to separate them out of my account and give them each their own account, and move their music out of my library and in to theirs.  How do I do this?

Accounts can not be seperated, content acquired with the account is permanently tied to that account.
It is possible to create new accounts for the kids but for them to retain access to the content acquired with the account would require continual access to the login/password of the account the content was acquired with or acquiring the content with the new account.

Yes. I would clarify your statement about the "shared" iTunes Library though. If you want each iOS device to have its own music library, you should create separate user accounts for them. Read:

  • TS4097 we have multiple users in our family and multiple devices all sharing one itunes account.  i think we are all synced to one icloud account and it is a nightmare....contacts lost, text messags showing up on multiple devises etc.  how do we fix this?

We have our family sharing one itunes account.  we have 3 iphones, 2 macbook airs, 2 ipads and 1 mac.  I am not sure how we even got started on the icloud but somehow we did and everything is a mess.  The ipads are showing the text messages, the contacts are all combined, the apps that my duaghter downloads are appearing on all devices.  how do we fix this so contacts are not shared, messages are not shared and apps are not automatically synced to all devises?

You have two different issues going on.  You are getting each other's messages because you are sharing the Same Apple ID for iMessage.  This can be corrected by going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive on add the devices and doing one of the following:
Either uncheck the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on all of your devices; or
If you want to continue to receive iMessages at this email address on one of your devices, on all of the other ones tap the Apple ID at the top, sign out, then sign back in using a different Apple ID (so all devices will be using a different Apple ID for iMessage).  Note: you can continue to share an Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores.  It does not need to be the same as the ID you are using for iMessage, FaceTime and other services.
The second issue is that you are sharing the same iCloud account on your devices.  When you do this any data you sync with the shared iCloud account such as contacts is merged and will appear on all devices connected to the account.  To fix this you both need to have separate iCloud accounts (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).
First decide which device(s) will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one(s) that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else that you want to keep on the device(s), save these to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this device, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On [iDevice].  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a separate Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  Repeat this process for all the devices that you need to migrate to new accounts.
When finished, to un-merge the data in your accounts you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting the other person's contacts from your account, and vice versa).

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

  • Family sharing one Itunes account, want to remove all of their computers content from my library... help

My family shares one Itunes account and I believe it was home sharing that brought all of their music, purchases, movies, etc. onto my Mac's Itunes Library. I want to remove all of their content from it. I turned off Homesharing and that didn't work. All of their music is on my computer and synchs to my Iphone and it's driving me nuts. Please help !

You can deauthorise all 5 at once, then reauthorize the one you want.

  • Want separate i Cloud accounts/storage while sharing one iTunes account

My husband and I want to keep sharing our iTunes account for music, apps, podcasts, etc. But we want separate iCloud storage for notes, contacts, documents & data, Safari bookmarks, and so on. His iPhone and my iPod Touch and iPad mini are signed into his account, including his iCloud. I just set up a separate iCloud account for me on my iPod Touch using a different email address. But I cannot figure out how to sign out of his iCloud and into mine on my iPod and iPad.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes that will work, enter the iTunes Store details into itunes on the computer and into settings > Store on your iOS devices in all cases, enter your iCloud Sync ID into system preferences > iCloud on the computer and settings > iCloud on iOS devices as required for each iCloud ID.

  • Mac computer  with 2 user accounts but sharing one Itunes account

My wife and daughter are sharing one computer and each likes having their own account on the computer. I've figured out how to let them share songs between their libraries by placing the library in a public folder.
The problem is my wife's account will let her down load new songs with out trouble but my daughter can not down load new songs. Does Itunes consider each account on the same PC as a new computer ? Meaning do I have to "authorize" my daughter's Itunes even though I've already done that in my wife's Itunes account for the shared computer ?
    Thanks
    Mike

In a way, each iTunes libary is considered to be a different account. Your daughter's iTunes account doesn't have access to your wife's data which has all the verification data.
One option would not only to place the library in a Shared area, but also the verification data. I poked around and am not sure where it's stored. It's a good discussion to have with an Apple store Genius if you have one nearby.

  • Sharing one iTunes account between 3 devices and a Time Machine

    I have a iphone 4S
    i have an Imac
    I have a Time machine
    I have a macbook
I have Apple TV - hard wired to the TV
All devices are using the latest versions of OSX and IOS
My Iphone syncs with the imac Itunes account
All my Music is on the Time Machine which is connected to my router (virgin Broadband)
The itunes account on the Imac is aware my music folder is on the time machine.
My question is - how do i get to use my Itunes account on the Macbook and update playlists and Playcounts on the Iphone and Imac?
I want to be able to play my music on the time machine from any of my apple devices and it update one music Library.
Is there a way i can do this?
Regards and thanks for your time

You can sync your music to each of your devices using the iMac which is referencing the library on your itunes. So all good there. If you want to share the information amongst all your devices then home Sharing will do it. But only if you are in your own network.
If you want to use the same klibrary on your Macbook as your iMac you can point it at the Library on the time capsule.
If you want the content on your Macbook then Home Sharing between computers will let you copy it but it will not copy over playlists etc
Using home sharing you have to have itunes open on your iMac so that the other devices can see it. Also ensure that sleep is not set for your computer.

  • ICloud with multiple family members sharing one iTunes account?

How will iCloud work for the case where multiple family members share an iTunes account but each has his/her own iPhone/iPad/PC?
Will iCloud replicate content based on email address, unique Apple ID, iTunes account, or??  If iTunes, we could have trouble as three of us share our iTunes account (started when our daughter was young and continued for simplicity).

Keep one Apple ID for iTunes purchases (apps, music, etc.) for all family members on the iTunes Store and use different Apple IDs for each iCloud user. That worked for me.

  • Multiple computers sharing one iTunes account?

I know this must for a FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer.  I have an iTunes account that I use on my home computer running Vista.  I have purchased quite a bit of music online.  I want to transfer my purchases from my online iTunes store account to my work Macbook and iPhone.  When I login into my iTunes store account on the Mac, I don't see my purchases.  How do I access and download them to the Mac so that I can sync them to iPhone?

You need to copy them from one computer to the other yourself, until the just-announced iCloud is up and running (we need iTunes 10.3 which should be available shortly). For now, see
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers
iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between computers
And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced preferences before you do.
Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).

  • Sharing one itunes account with two computers

I used to share my itunes account with my sister and our ipods were synched to one computer. We now have two new computers and would still like to continue to share that account. Is it possible to open the same account on two separate computers?

Explain how you transfer content manually.
Control-click or right-click it in iTunes, choose Get Info, locate the music files, move them to the other computer's hard disk as you would any other type of file, and then drag them into the open iTunes window. By default on a Mac, dragging them to the open iTunes window also copies them to the hard disk.

Between my daughter and I, we have 6 devices, can they all share the same itunes account and have two separate icloud accounts?  My itunes account ID is different from my apple ID and my daughter's apple ID.  Is it ok that they are all different.  If yes, how do they all sync up if they are different?  Help!!!

  • Can i have two devices sharing one itunes account

i currently have my iphone synced with my itunes account, i have just bought a ipod and want it to share the same itunes account, library etc, how do i do this without wiping it off my phone when ading the new ipod ??

This won't be a problem, iTunes will see the new device as a separate device, it will have its own settings under iTunes, you can set it up to sync the same content or different content to the first device, it will have no effect on how the first device syncs with iTunes.

  • Separating one iTunes account into 3 different accounts

I have both of my kids iPods (and my iPhone) all sharing one iTunes account.  Is there a way to move them to their own iTunes account without losing all the apps and music they have on their devices?

Any music purchased after about 2009 can be played on any computer with the file on it.  That's the easy part.  Oh, I don't know if syncing present problems but I'm guessing it won't since people often have multiple Store accounts and shared music on family computers.
Movies require the computer be authorized to the account used to purchase the content.  This is where you will have to come to an agreement not to change the password or de-authorize each other's computers for that account (there could be a scenario where this is done unintenionally but it shouldn't normally arise unless you have lots and lots of computers).
One  tip is to make sure you always have all content present on a local drive.  Do not put yourself in a position to ever need to re-download media from the Store.  I am presuming you will have your own account after this and the main problem people seem to have with using multiple Store accounts on a computer is being prevented from changing accconts more than once every 90 days for the purpose of re-downloading.  Otherwise families often have multiple AppleID users on a single computer with shared media.
You may have to ease up on doing anything such as using iTunes Match or iCloud downloads with this particular account, but we're talking trying to rescue what you can.

  • One iTunes account into two via home share

My wife and I have been sharing one iTunes account for years. We now have two iMac and so I'd like to separate into two accounts by retaining my original account on my imac and creating a new itunes account on her iMac. Her iMac is the one with the original account. Her ipod is tied to that computer and my account but I'd like her ipod tied to the new account so she can start making purchases that do not show up under my account and on my imac/ipad.
I understand that this process is not possible since apps and songs are liscensed under one user. However, I can easily redownload the apps my wife uses (15 or so, most of which are free). It's the iTunes store bought music I am unclear about.
I've done a bit of researching and have come to an idea that may work but I'd like feedback from those more in the know than I.
So, I'd like to run this process by all of you out there and ask if this sounds right.
My imac is all set with my account.
Wifes iMac: (Core i7, 10.6.8, current iTunes)
    - Set-up wife's iMac with a new itunes account.
    - Turn on that account in iTunes (authorize to computer to this new account)
    - Home Sharing is on (purchased music on her computer under my account but not on my computer... I don't listen to Amy Winehouse)
    - Connect her ipod (Touch gen 2) to her iMac and update as new account.
-this may delete all songs on her ipod but with home sharing can I just reload the music from the itunes library?
-Will I be able to load the store purchased music that resides on her imac onto her ipod touch with the new account on it?
      - Or will she have to "authorize" each and every song as the ipod plays them???
    – Redownload wifes previous free apps (downloaded under my name) under her new account.
The end result is I'd like any new purchases of songs or apps to be under her new account but still retain the music she purchased under my account on her ipod. Thus she can purchase on the device and it will update in itunes on iMac.
Does this make sense? Will this work?
    Thanks,

I just got zapped by this crazy conundrum yesterday. I bought a used ipad1 thru EBay, for my son. He doesn't have home Internet or an up to date Mac so I set it up for him on my computer, unaware of the 90-day lockout rule.  He owns a lot of iTunes downloads and I thought input would be faster to do it wired to my computer rather than via wireless direct onto his iPad, so I logged out of my account and into his. When I was done downloading his stuff I logged out of his account and got the 90-day lockout notice when I logged back into my account!
Thanks to all the posters here and other similar threads I learned what had happened, but until I got to this thread I thought I was locked out of ALL downloads, including new purchases. Thanks for the info about it just being for re-downloads. Fortunately, I am obsessive about backing up all new purchases in a master iTunes file.  It just seems kinda stupid. What is the point in locking me out of things I already own? Anyway, thanks for the help!
Just tested on my computer and was indeed able to download a new album from iTunes on my account.
As far as sharing between devices is concerned, I have separate iTunes folders for each of 4 iOS devices I use, and simply use the "Add to library" feature in iTunes to copy anything I need to from one device's folder to the other. Works well.
