Sharing other content from iMac via appletv

just purchased an apple tv and everything works great! Question: I have some video on the iMac that i'd like to view on the hdtv using apple tv. Can I share the folder on the iMac? Is there a way to do this?

I understand the alias concept, just not how to accomplish it.
Simply press/hold the "Alt/Option" key while "drop-importing" one or more files. iTunes will create a "reference" pointing to the file(s) for "logical" management purposes but not physically import the file to your designated library area. That is, the original file remains in its original physical location but for all intents and purposes, iTunes acts as if the file where physically imported to the library. Further, if you later decide to delete the file from the iTunes library, only the reference link will be deleted, leaving the file still available in its original physical location. This is a built-in iTunes feature.

  • Streaming MOG from iMac to AppleTV

I signed up for MOG audio streaming and currently play it through the iMAC speakers, however, I have a sound system with HDMI connection sitting in the same room.  If I purchase AppleTV and connect it to my wired network (gigabit) and HDMI to my sound system, will I be able listen to audio through my audio without sacrificing sound quality due to AppleTV solution regardless what the input source is?
In other words, is AppleTV a suitable solution for music playing from iMAC via external sound system?
    Thanks.

I checked again and I have activated both the
    - AppleTv (Settings > Airtunes: On) and
    - iTunes (8.0.2) (Preferences > Devices > Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes: On)
but nothing happened. Still I cannot see that box on the bottom right of the iTunes window. Maybe a restart of both devices would help... No other clue

  • Sharing Internet Connection from iMac to MacBook Pro

I've arrived home for the holiday from university and, of course, brought my MacBook Pro home with me. My family does not have a wireless Internet connection as I do at uni, but they do have an iMac connected to a cable modem via ethernet. So I have enabled Internet connection sharing on the iMac and told the iMac not to sleep unless it is inactive for 3 hours (it gets used frequently enough that this shouldn't be a problem, and the computer can go into sleep mode at night). The iMac screen is set to turn off after about 20 minutes, to save energy.
The iMac's sharing is via AirPort and it has a WEP password. I use my MacBook Pro's AirPort card to connect to the iMac's connection. Unfortunately, after about 20-30 minutes of using the wireless on the MBP, the safari web browser claims that I am not connected to the Internet and the AirPort card gets a "self-assigned" IP address. The solution is to restart the MBP.
Why is this happening, and is there anything I need to do on either of the computers to fix the problem? Both computers are running 10.5.1 with all security updates installed. It's frustrating having to constantly restart the computer when I'm using the Internet.

My problem is similar. I'm trying to do internet share from iMac G5 (w/ iSight) to MacBook Pro, both running 10.5.1. The iMac is connected to dsl/router via ethernet, and I'm trying to internet share to MBP via airport. I cannot establish connection, even though airport shows full strength signal. I checked password over and over and over, and that seems fine. But Network preference panel shows airport to have self-assigned IP.
I tried internet share from iMac to MBP via firewire, but that did not work either.
On a (un)related? note, I used to be able to share screen, but only in one direction. I could control the iMac from my MBP, but never the other way around despite the fact all the firewall and sharing is set identical. Now, even though in both computers I have the other computer showing up in the sidebar of the Finder, screen share and file share fails. I just don't know what happened!

  • TM wireless routing from iMac via Ethernet cable

I'm in Spain and have a wireless router from my ISP.  I have my iMac connected over wifi to the router.  I now have a 4th gen Time Machine that I am connecting directly to my iMac via an ethernet cable.
What I'm trying to do is to use the Time Machine to create a new wifi network while connected to my iMac by the ethernet cable.  Main reason is, I'm Spain and connect to a VPN so it appears as if I'm in the US for US television and a few other services (US citizen residing abroad).  I want to be able to sign into the VPN on my iMac and have this signal (and IP) broadcast over the wifi network I create.
I was able to finally setup a new wireless network with the Time Machine, but as soon as I login to the VPN, the Time Machine signal drops.  Is there a way to use the Time Machine as a throughput wifi device for the signal sent over the ethernet cable between the iMac and Time Machine?  It appears that the change in IP address when signing into the VPN is what may be causing the problem.  Is there a way to fix this or circumvent it?
    Thanks!

The box is a Time Capsule. Time Machine is the backup software on a Mac and only on a Mac.
Is the vpn a software version on the iMac?
Generally using a vpn and linking it via the computer to another router is particularly messy.
You are much better buying a cheap router that will do vpn with 3rd party firmware. Most vpn services recommend this kind of setup. I think you will do much better following their recommendations. Simply connect the iMac behind the vpn router when you want access to material from US.
TC do not have built in vpn and are difficult to setup for anything more than most basic functions.
I am not sure you can do ICS (internet connection sharing) from a vpn connection to the TC.. without a lot of manual routing rules.
Do a google.. there are several sites with info. Search for mac internet connection sharing vpn
In the end.. get a cheap router and use openvpn.

  • TS3623 When I play movies from Netflix via AppleTV, the picture is very bad quality (looks like the first color movies from 1960).

When I play movies from Netflix via Apple TV, the picture quality is like a color movie from 1960. When I play Netflix on the computer or Iphone, I have no quality problem. Also, the movie plays for 4 minutes, then freezes and download for another 5 minutes before continuing. The signal strenght on Apple TV show 3 boxes out of five. I have the Apple TV set up about 30 feet from my Airport, separated with drywall walls and on hardwood floor. I tried to find the answer of my problem on the Apple troubleshooting site without success. Finally, I am trying to download an updated software for my Apple TV and Apple TV tells me there 4 hours left to the download; is that normal?

I did the SPEEDTEST, and my download is 25Mbs. My connection should not be the problem. I use Shaw cable with HIGH SPEED INTERNET. If I watch it on my computer or Iphone, the picture quality is excellent. The problem is the communication between my Airport and my Apple TV. At the store, the guaranteed me there would be no problem anywhere in the house. As I mentionned earlier, the signal has to travel between walls and floor. I get only 3 boxes out of five for signal strenght. I moved my AppleTV 3 feet from my Airport and I donèt have anymore problems; image quality or download speed. But of course, I do not want my AppleTV beside my computer. The reason I bought it is to be able to watch Netflix and my computer content on my TV in the family room. That was the whole purpose, but the AppleTV does not work well at that distance. I may as well bring it back to the store and continue to rent BD dvds.

  • Stream content from iTunes to AppleTV and Airport Express

I have an Apple TV in family room which is wirelessly connected to my home network. I also have a PC connected via Ethernet to my network. All my music is stored on an external drive connected to my PC (I don’t store any media on the ATV, as my music is well over 400GB). This setup works great, and allows me to stream content from the external drive to my ATV which is connected to a stereo.
Next, I purchased an Airport Express, connected it to a second stereo in my basement. After spending 3 hours trying to get it connected to my network, (I had to disable all wireless encryption, and use MAC filtering to keep network secure), I am now able to stream media from iTunes on the PC, to the stereo connected to the Airport Express.
What I would like to do now, is be able to select a song from the Apple TV (using ATV remote, or iPhone Remote), and have it play in both places. Since the media itself is coming from iTunes running on the PC with the external drive, and it gets streamed from there to Apple TV, how can I also stream the same content to the Airport Express?
The folks at the Apple store say this is a feature, but no one seems to know how to make it work. I have also read hundreds of posts online, and some say you can do this, others say you cannot. All of those who say it is not possible, state you cannot stream from ATV to AE, but in my case, the media is not on the ATV, it is on the PC, and I just want to use ATV to select the song. From there, it would be iTunes that would send the content to both the ATV and the AE.
Can someone help myself and many others put this question to rest - can it be done, or not?

Thanks for the reply. Just as you indicated, I figured out how to use iPhone remote to tell iTunes on PC to output to Express, Apple TV and PC, and that works great - I can even turn on/off any of the speakers from the iPhone - this is so COOL!
While you answered the question, I am curious about the architecture of all this...If the media is actually on the PC and is controlled by iTunes, isn't the Apple TV doing the same thing as the iPhone Remote - just telling iTunes what to play, and iTunes sends the content to whatever speakers are defined? Keeping that thought, if you can control iTunes via iPhone Remote, and the content will play on any speakers you select, then it would make sense that you could do the same thing with the Apple TV menu - tell iTunes what to play, and let iTunes send to whatever speakers you have selected.

  • Can't stream HD content from iMac to Apple TV - help pls!

    Hi.
Until a few days ago everything worked fine but now I can't stream HD movies from my iMac iTunes library to my Apple TV or iPad.
My library is recognized just fine, I can access all the films - but when I try to play them all I get is the dreaded waiting circle which just circles forever without any movie playing. SD content will play but only after a loooong wait - but forget HD films. They just circle forever - in a few cases they will play for a few seconds and then halt.
As mentioned, I have the same issue on my iPad Mini 2, so it might not solely be an ATV problem but rather a Yosemite / iTunes issue? Not sure.
    The facts:
I have changed nothing in my setup from a few days ago when everything worked fine and until now when nothing does.
    I have rebooted my router.
I have rebooted my iMac and made sure Yosemite is updated.
I have factory reset my ATV3 and updated it to the latest firmware
I have renamed my iMac iTunes library as was suggested by someone in another thread.
I have tested my network speed and it's fine (30 MB down / 7 up)
    Still it doesn't work :-(
Can anyone help? This is so annoying - it's like the transmission speed has gone way down between my imac and ATV and iPad.

For what it's worth this is my story, Apple TV on which I now rely totally for my entertainment started getting sluggish a few weeks/months? ago, both the one in the bedroom and in the living room. Loading was desperate the spinning wheel driving me to distraction, I did all the usual reset the settings, rebooted the Mac, repaired the disk and kicked the cat, brief respite and then back to the dreaded whirligig of death.
This evening I tried something different, my Airport Extreme handles 2.4 and 5GHz so I ran Wireless Diagnostics (hold down option key whilst clicking on wi-fi symbol) (then go to window in menu bar and select scan) and ran a scan.
The scan identified the best channels for both frequencies, I selected these as opposed to automatic and all was well, average time to load and start a movie 20 seconds.
Try it I hope it works for you I have had so much help from the Apple communities for so many years I hope I can give a little back.

  • HT2953 How do I transfer iTunes content from iMac to MacBook Air?

I want to transfer a language program from my iMac to MacBook Air, but the MacBook Air has no place to insert a disk. Help!

    Hi LLAAnder,
You can share your iMac's optical drive by following this article:

  • Airplay from iMac to AppleTV will only share video, no audio.

I am on Mountain Lion on my iMac, with a new AppleTV. Sometimes screenshare will work, sometimes it will only share video. I can't figure out why it happens, going into Sys Prefs won't let me select audio for AppleTV.

Can you select Apple TV as audio BEFORE you start the mirroring, this is often the problem.

  • Viewing content from macbook on AppleTV = confusing

I would like to view photos and videos from my Macbook on Apple TV. I don't understand why it is actually so confusing. On Apple's website regarding setting up Home Sharing, it doesn't say what you do after you turn on home sharing. Then what do you do? I still don't see any added functionality to then view my stuff. Please help me understand this:
    1) You can only view photos/videos through iTunes? You cannot go directly from  iPhoto or Quicktime to Apple TV? To view individual images?
    2) I did manage to turn on home sharing in itunes and select the photo albums to share, and then put them up on the tv ( though I can't remember how now ). I checked "invlude videos", but the videos do not appear. I have some AVIs and some MOVs, it appears the MOVs (recorded from iPhone) do appear, but no other formats?
I'm thinking it's actually easier to buy a cable and physically connect my laptop to the tv, and use the tv as the screen.
This whole thing is ridiculously picky! I know it's supposed to be simple but it's really not. Where can I get a thorough explanation on how this all works? Not the skimmed over generalities that Apple provides, but the detailed step-by-steps that include what you can and cannot view... I'm tearing my hair out here. Thank you.

You can do that but you'll need to use a 3rd party DVD player, there are a number of free ones that can be downloaded from the Internet, such as VLC. It's likely that Apple's license to distribute DVD playing software doesn't allow the playback to be streamed (AirPlay) to other devices that might be capable of recording it.

  • With wi-fi sync, can I select video or other content from my mac to sync to my iPad?

While using my iPad, is it possible to select content (video, music, etc) that resides on my mac to then be transferred via wifi to my iPad? I understand wi-fi sync will automatically (or manually) sync my ipad with my itunes on my mac based on the settings in itunes, but is there a way to manually select some content to sync without having to go back to itunes to make that change?
    Thanks!

If you're at all familiar with the cable sync, the WiFi sync is identical with one exception...
If configured for WiFi sync, IOS updates are only via the IOS device.
It's actually quite slick.  Typically, I plug my iPad into a wall socket at the end of the day.  Then, I fire up my Mac and check to see how lousy my 401K looks.  My iTunes opens automatically upon login (configured via System Prefs) and the iPad sync is performed in the background.

  • Playing videos and other content from my Lenovo Tab A8 to my Samsung SMART TV

Hi,I've a Lenovo Tab A8. I also bought a Samsung SMART TV recently. I want to connect my Tab to my TV so that I can share and watch the Tab's contents on the large screen wirelessly. I tried many different apps but they did not help. Is there anyway this can be done? Would be great if you can let me know. Thanks Tashfin

On my A7-30, I turn on my Screen Mirror function on my TV and then turn on the "Cast Screen" function on my phone. It will then connect.

  • Sharing Pages documents from iMac desktop

I have a 13 page document written in Pages. I would like to email this document via email to other users not necessarily Mac users. Will they be able to open the Pages document once they receive it?  Thanks!

If you send this document as a Pages one, they will not be able to open it.
What you can do is to export the document to Word format, so probably most users will be able to open it. To do this, open your document in Pages and go to File menu (on the menu bar) > Export to > Word. Then, you can send the exported file
