Sharing & Permissions Problems

After a recent rebuild of my system from the original discs I have noticed some changes to the sharing & preferences for my applications; I have only installed iLife 09, TechTool Pro 5 and Norton Anti Virus 11 so far. Get info for TechTool Pro says: Me read & write, staff read only, everyone read only, as I would expect - Norton Anti Virus says system read & write, admin read only, everyone read only - iPhoto says system read & write, admin read & write, everyone read only - iTunes says system read & write, wheel read only, everyone read only. I'm pretty sure that before the rebuild all my applications had Me at the top of the list with read & write access. Any ideas on how this happened and can be fixed?

I had always thought of the permissions as ownership. Software that I install from disk should be owned by me and I should be top of the access list with both read & write permissions and this has certainly been the case in the past. The fact that TechTool Pro loaded with what I believe to be the correct permissions and iLife and Norton Anti Virus didn't makes me suspect that something is not right.
The reason for posting this question was, when I ran Norton Anti Virus the padlock in the application window was unlocked. When I clicked on it to lock it, it locked briefly then opened again. That's when I checked it's permissions. I figured that if the system had read & write but I as an administrator only had read, how could I change the application preferences?

File Sharing Permissions Problem When NEW Files Created

My wife & I have a home office network setup for our business, and are having trouble with shared files over the network. We're both on Macs, and all of our client files reside on an internal hard drive in my Mac Pro. I've set her up as a "Sharing Only" user on my computer (which matches the username & password of her account on her iMac), and have properly setup file sharing in both the System Preferences, and in the directory itself that we want shared. I've also applied the permissions to all files & folders below the main folder, and she can view, open and save whatever she needs and it works great.
*Here's where the problem comes in...* If either of us create a NEW file or folder, the other person doesn't have WRITE access to it (we can browse and open it fine). The second I go to update a file she created, it won't let me over-write it, and I have to go into the permissions for that specific file and give myself Read/Write access. I've experimented with "Groups", and assigned both of us a special group, and applied that group access to that directory, but it doesn't make any difference when a NEW file or folder is created - it doesn't copy the parent directory permissions to itself, it makes one of us the owner, and nobody else has access.
Is there any way around this? We're both constantly creating new files, and it really hampers our workflow to have to keep re-applying file permissions every time one of us creates something new. Ideally, any new files created within that main client folder would automatically have the same permissions as the parent directory. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Here's how to do this with Access Control Lists.
1) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts. Unlock the padlock. Click the + button. Make a new group. Call this group "sharing" for the purposes of this exercise. Add the users you want to the group.
2) Make a new empty folder in /Users/Shared. Call it "sharefolder".
3) Log in to an admin account and paste all three of these lines at once into Terminal:
sudo chmod +a "sharing allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
/Users/Shared/sharefolder
4) From now on, any files you create or copy to the sharefolder or to any of its subfolders will inherit read+write permission for all users in the group. If you have any existing files that you want to move into the sharefolder, a simple move by drag & drop won't cause the permissions to propagate. you need to hold down the option key while dragging them in. This will copy them over, ensuring that the ACL permission is properly inherited.
One other caveat: Files created by a small number of OS X apps won't inherit the permissions properly if saved directly into the ACL folder hierarchy. TextEdit is one such app. Save TextEdit files in a temporary location first, and then copy them in. Then they will have the correct permissions.

Odd Sharing & Permissions Problem

Tonight I was suddenly unable to copy anything onto my interior hard disk. I got the permissions arror that the "Macintosh HD" could not be modifued and the password dialog box. I did a control-i on the HD and saw that my name had vanished from the permissions list. Which now read only "System -- Read and Write; Wheel -- Read and Write; Everyone -- Read Only." I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions but it said that all was OK. I then unlocked that permissions list and went to add myself to the permissions again. Although I selected my name it would NOIT appear in the permissions list! I had just made a user area for my wife last week and I logged into her area which has admin privileges. I cotrol-i'd the hard disk and from her user area was able to choose my name, add it to the list and give it read and write access. On the one hand, all is working now. On the other hand, I am extremely worried why 1) this happened and 2) why I could not repair it from my user area and 3) if this is a symptom of a major problem. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thanks!

Those ownerships and permissions were as they should be in Lion - you shouldn't try to change them. The startup drive permissions were deliberately made more restrictive in Lion, such that only the root user can write to the top level.
In my dual-boot setup, the startup-drive permissions look like this:

There were also number of similar changes to other folders that Apple feels should not be written to by ordinary users.

A number of folders in the System and Local file system domains now have different ownership and permissions. Specifically:

Problem with File Sharing-Permissions throughout Folders

I'm having an odd problem when setting up a Mac Pro with File Sharing. I have a second Hard Drive in it which is a Server Drive to be shared as a networked Hard Drive for both my MBP and my Fiancee's MBP. Here is the problem I have.
I set up File Sharing and set up both her ID and my ID. Since this is done she is able to get to drive from my MBP and she is able to get to the drive from her MBP. I am able to read or write to those folders. She is able to view them but is unable to write to them.
I went to the Server Drive icon on the Mac Pro's Desktop. When I right click and do "Get Info" and select Sharing I can tell her ID is not listed on any of the Folders. She is listed as Read and Write for the entire Hard Drive (which is an internal drive). I am also listed as Read and WRite and then it lists Everyone and says No Access. The same is listed in System Preferences in File Sharing. I have heard this Everyone 'No Access' can cause problems but I prefer not to give access to everyone. The only other option is Read Only and Read and Write. Also, when I have Everyone selected the - sign is greyed out so I'm unable to remove Everyone.
To continue, what is strange is I thought with it saying on the Server Drive itself for my Fiancee, read & write, that it would say this on every Folder inside. Yet when I select any Folder inside on the Server Drive and select Get Info it says for me "Read & Write" and for Staff "Read Only" and for Everyone "Read only" I'm not even sure where Staff comes fro and of course Everyone is Read Only and my Fiancee not even listed. It just seems that these file sharing permissions are not replicated througout all the Folders when I select it for the Hard Drive itself. What could be causing this and how can I get the same to go throughout the Folders? I know manually I could change them all but this would take a long time and likely still be a problem when any additional Folders are added.

1. I have turned logged into it from my MBP while at Home and if I'm logged in as Guest I only see the Server Drive which is good. My concern is that if I log in with my login I then sell all Folders including the Main 'Macintosh HD' At least as a guest I can only see the Server Drive but is it any way I can stop it from showing all the other folders on the computer since I have no reason to do that?
When you login to a mac as an administrator it is normal to see all the contents of the volumes connected to that mac.
2. Also, I would like to disable all access for Guest. Yet I have it list Everyone or Guest in the file sharing and I have no way of deleting this. I don't want a Guest to be able to connect to this computer or share any files at all on it. Is there any way to disable this?
Goto system preferernces-->accounts
click on the lock to and enter your password to unlock the preference pane.
Then select the guest account. Then uncheck the 2 check boxes. The account should now have 'disabled' underneath it.
3. Security: How secure is this? I am using it on a Home Wi-Fi network with an Airport Base Station 1GB. I have the Leopard filewall set to "Set Access for Specific Services" since it won't work with "Allow only essential services" I hope my home network is more security but with Back to my Mac how hard would it be for someone to be able to find this computer on the network? I don't do any filesharing on my MBP but do have it set up for File Sharing but only with my login ID.
If you have your base station set to distribute ip addresses then it is acting as a NAT router and will firewall you.
I have not setup back to my mac yet so can't comment on its security. Although I would suggest a strong password.

Having Problems With Sharing & Permissions in Finder

I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4.
I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my compuer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info. However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user).
This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user.
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.
Any help would be appreciated.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the Recovery screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Mac to Mac file sharing - file permissions problem upon newly created files

Hi all,
At home I have two iMac's both running Snow Leopard.
iMac A/Users/*1 is sharing his iMac A/Users/*1/Documents folder.
The sharing & permissions - preferences of this folder and the files inside this folder are:
'*1' : (the iMac A's main user account) : Read & Write
'share' : (a Sharing Only account, set up from iMac A) : Read & Write
everyone : : No Access
iMac B/Users/*2 is able to read & write to this folder because he is connected with iMac A as 'share'.
So far so good. iMac A/Users/*1 can read & write to his own Documents folder
and so can iMac B/Users/*2 because he is connected to iMac A as 'share'.
But: this only applies to the folders and files that are _already in_ the iMac A/Users/*1/Documents folder,
because I once changed the sharing & permissions -permissions of iMac A/Users/*1/Documents as mentioned above and executed 'Apply to enclosed Items...'.
So the problem is: when I create a new file or folder on iMac A/Users/*1 or on
iMac B/Users/*2 and put it in iMac A/Users/*1/Documents, this new file or folder will only
have the standard sharing & permissions - preferences of any newly created file or folder
on the iMac X/Users/*Y it was created. The problem is those sharing & permissions - preferences
will not let the other iMac X"/Users/*Y" Read & Write to this new file or folder but only let himself
Read & Write. Following, the other iMac X"/Users/*Y" will only be able to Read the newly created
file or folder, because the standard standard sharing & permissions - preferences on
iMac A/Users/*1 as well as on iMac B/Users/*2 are the following:
'*Y' : (the iMac X's main user account) : Read & Write
staff : (Administrator accounts on iMac X) : Read only
everyone : : Read only
A pretty manual fix to this problem is walking to iMacX" and changing the
sharing & permissions - preferences of the newly created file or folder so that iMacX"
will also be able to Read & Write this newly created file or folder.
Does anyone know a better fix for my problem? Basicly I want to have Read & Write
sharing & permissions on the newly created file or folder for both iMac's,
not only the for the file or folder creator's iMac. And this without having to change
sharing & permissions - preferences of this newly created file or folder manually
each time.

I have found a thread wich i think also handles about my problem.
The standard sharing & permissions - preferences or privileges
can be changed apparently, this seems to have got something to do
with umask and changing this umask. The adress is the following:

Other ways to change the above-mentioned umask may be
applications like SharePoints, TinkerTool or BatChMod.
All of them are also mentioned in the above-mentioned thread.
I haven't executed the solution as mentioned in the above-mentioned
thread yet, replies to the thread speak about insecurity and failures.
Further more I haven't found any other solutions to my problem,
so any help is still greatly appreciated.

Shared File Permissions Problem

Since upgrading the Mavericks I constantly have file permissions problems when I tranfer files between computer. Let me see if I can clarify the problem procedurally.
1. I have a shared directory that I set to Read&Write privileges for Admin, (me), and Everyone.
2. I clicked the cog to apply the changes to all the enclosed items. Perfect... everything contained within the directory was changed.
3. I went to my other Maverics computer and connected to this shared directory using SMB, AFP, connect to server command-k, and using the shared feature on the finder window, which asked me to authenticate when I make the connection. I logged in with the admin account to make sure I absolutely had full privileges.
4. I transferred a file to the shared directory and it ended up with the privileges of only (me) RW and Everyone as No Access. It dropped every other set of privileges that were in the directory and set Everyone to No Access, which is a major problem since it serves the files to the web server. I checked the Sharing preferences in the System Preferences. Sure enough all groups are set to Read and Write.
The shared directory in Terminal says the privileges are drwxrwxrwx+ so it should retain those privileges for any file I place in that directory, but it doesn't.
This is a new problem to Mavericks. When I used OS 10.7 and 10.8 and chose the get info option to apply the permissions to all enclosed files it stayed that way for any file I inserted into the directory. Now you have to constantly change file permissions even going from Mavericks-to-Mavericks computers.
Does anyone know how to retain the file permissions for a shared directory when new files are placed in the directory?

Permissions problems with Shared files

In my office of two users I have set up file sharing between two Macs, one is is running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the other (a PPC machine) is running 10.5.8 (The Leopard Machine was migrated over from a Tiger Machine by doing a fresh install of Leopard and then using Migration Assistant to move the user account off of the Tiger Machine).
Occasionally, I need to send files to the Leopard Mac from my Snow Leopard machine, so I connect to the other Mac's Shared folder, navigate to the Drop Box, and pop the file in.
Looking at the file on the other machine, it comes through as Read Only, ie. if I Get Info on it, it says 'you have custom access' and lists users as Nobody: Read Only; (Unknown): Read Only and Everybody: Read Only. These permission remain like this once the file is copied or moved out of the Drop Box.
I've had a look at the Sharing Prefs on both machines and they are set up to have the admin account as Read and Write and Everyone as Read Only - the Drop box is then set to have the admin account as Read and write and Everyone as Write Only (Drop Box).
The permissions problems happen in either direction, whether copying from machine A to machine B or vice versa.
Can someone help me fix this.

no, that's normal. this happens because of the ACLs.
Something similar is happening on the Leopard machine too.
I created a fresh user account on my Snow Leopard Machine to see what the default permissions should be and I get other entries in the permissions list that aren't present on either of the two Machine's main user accounts. Users such as 'Staff', for example. Frankly, I'm lost.
I've read somewhere that there could be permissions problems on machines where user accounts have been upgraded from Tiger to Leopard as is the case with one of the machines in question.
yes, that could be. we can fix that if necessary.
I've also read that I can do a complete reset of ACLs by using the Reset Password utility on the Leopard installer DVD. Would this be worth a go, and could it cause more problems if it doesn't work?
yes, you can try resettings ACLs on the leopard machine using the leopard install disk. however, the acl reset utility on the leopard disk is somewhat buggy and sets wrong groups on everything it touches. therefore after you are done with it, reboot normally and run the following terminal command
sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal.

Can not edit id3 tags since upgrade to iTunes 8.1: permissions problem (?)

Hi all,
I am angry at myself for having upgraded to 8.1 before I knew that it's ok, and angry at Apple releasing this update with too many problems. Here is my list:
(1) I cannot change ID3 tags within iTunes for certain tracks. I usually click on one or several tracks, press Command+i for information, then change the desired tags (e.g. genre, album, etc.) and click ok. Only that iTunes won't let me write anything. I found that I have no longer write permission to exactly these tracks (my music is on an external LaCie Firewire800 HD). What I did so far:
- I tried to run "Repair permissions" on the internal HD.
- I clicked on the iTunes music folder on the external hard drive, opened the information window and changed under "Sharing & Permissions" the rights to read&write for my user account. I clicked on "Apply to enclosed items", which should set the permissions to all elements within the folder.
Any ideas? My system is freshly installed (~3weeks old), everything is updated.
(2) Probably related to (1): certain files and documents on my internal hard drive have wrong permissions. Firefox for example is locked as read only, and I cannot update it via the "Check for update" in the help menu. I know there is an update available, as I am using 3.0.6 and the newest is 3.0.8. Repair permissions did not help. See the screen shot for the grayed out "Check for updates" menu entry.

(3) In iTunes, I have a smart playlist in which all songs rated with four or more stars are gathered. I found songs in this list that I did not rate yet, and they all have odd "empty" stars in comparison to the songs I rated myself. What's up with that? See screenshot, some of the songs of the album "I love Jazz" have these odd stars:

That's exactly what I did, it took ~20sec to complete the "apply to enclosed items" command (there was heavy disk access), but it does not improve. The permissions stay the same for the files/folders in question. It's very odd, have a look at the screenshot:
Some folders have correct permissions, others (to which I have no access through iTunes) show "admin" twice as the only user who is allowed to write. Repair permission does not help. I have hundreds of files/folders where permissions are wrong, only since the upgrade recently.

Help needed with permissions problem in new Aperture 3.5.1

Hello and thank you for helping me with my first question to this wonderful support center. I have been using Aperture for many years. I recently upgraded my Mac to Mavericks, now running 10.9.2. and then upgraded (by necessity) to Aperture 3.5.1. I am working on a big project for a client and have an assistant in another city. I live outside the US so mailed my library to my asst. on an external drive. She updated to 10.9.2 or .3 and Aperture 3.5.1. No problems. She modified the library and sent the library to the client in another city in the US on an external drive who has also upgraded to Mavericks and is running Aperture 3.5.1. So we are all in Mavericks with recent Apertures. When client tried to open the sent library client got a message that stated:
"Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.”
Clientʻs Tech assistant at her office is a PC specialist but apparently did try on Friday and did try to repair permissions but I am told that it did not work. I wish I had more specific info on what Tech assistant did but I do not at this time.
On Monday I would like to give them very specific instructions about what to do to open the library

I am sure that we are all running Mavericks and new Aperture, that does not seem to be at the root of the immediate problem. As we are in two different countries and three different cities and communication is hard, please tell me if this is a common problem with an easy fix and if it should be fixed by Repairing Permissions, please tell me exactly what I should tell them to do on Monday. They can at least see this discussion from their city!

Have your collegues check the file system of the drive and the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag.
To check the filesystem and "Ignore ownership" flag select the drive in the Finder and use the command "File > Get Info ⌘i"
In the panel unlock the padlock in the "Sharing & Permissions" brick and set the "Ignore ownership" flag at the bottom of the panel.
Also, check the "General" brick of the panel. The format should be showing as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Aperture checks for the correct formating before opening a library and may refuse to open a library on a drive formatted for Windows.
If the format is wrong, it would be best to move the library to a different drive with the correct formatting.
Once the "Ignore ownership" flag is set, try again to repair the permissions and see, ifyou now can open the library.

I can't sync my macbook air with my ipad, problems with authorization... this keeps cropping up: "The required file was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permi"

Help, cannot sync completely with my ipad, and i also cannot remove or delete shared photos which are clogging up my ipad 64GB memory! Some issue with this keeps croppin gup, so frustrating:

Launch iTunes
select iTunes Store from the menu on the left side.
sign in via the link on the top right area if you haven't done so already
click the link where you Apple ID email appears, enter your Apple ID password, click View Account, this will take you to a page displaying detailed information about your Apple ID account.
The last item under Apple ID summary should be Computer Authorisations, click Deauthorize All
now reauthorize any computers as needed when the system prompts you.

If the Shared folder does not exist
The following steps will recreate the Shared folder if it is missing and ensure that it has been assigned using the correct permissions.
Open Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities).Warning: This step involves modifying permission settings by entering commands in the Terminal application. Users unfamiliar with Terminal and UNIX-like environments should proceed with caution. The entry of incorrect commands may result in data loss or unusable system software. Improper alteration of permissions can result in reduced system security or exposure of private data. This option requires a non-blank admin password.
Type or copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window:sudo mkdir -p /Users/Shared/
Press Return.
Enter your administrator account password when prompted, then press Return.
Depending on which version of Mac OS X you have, this step will vary:
On Mac OS X v10.5.8 and earlier, type:sudo chmod 777 /Users/Shared
On Mac OS X v10.6 or later, type:sudo chmod 1777 /Users/Shared
Press Return.
Quit Terminal.

Permissions problems, keep changing and can't save from within application

Hi there, we're running Mavericks server on our local network with a half dozen MBP and iMacs connected.
For a wee while now, our users have been getting permissions problems. Documents (Excel documents, InDesign, Photoshop etc.) are becoming read only and we can't save them to either the same folder from within the application. Even ones that the same user has created. The thing is, we can copy the document to our desktop and then back again to the same folder and continue to edit and save normally.
I've tried setting the Access for our "Group" to "Read & Write" but to no avail, this keeps happening. I can login to the server as admin and correct the permissions but they seem to keep reverting somewhere along the line...
Apologies if there's something obvious I'm overlooking.
Any recommendations? Would you recommend just removing all users and groups and starting again? Am I missing something?

Thanks Linc, I have selected the folders that are shared from the Server App "Storage" tab and made sure the permissions are correct and then "propogated" them.
All users belong to the same group we call "material".
Just wondering, should I do this sort of thing when no one is connected to the server? Or should I require that everyone log off and back on?

I deleted "Staff" from "Sharing & Permissions"....

I tried searching around but was unable to find an answer. It seemed most other similar problems related to a migrated account from Tiger to Leopard which was not the case for me. Not only that but most of those posts seemed really complicated and hard to read.
When I right click on the folder and "get info" the "staff" option is missing from the "sharing & Permissions" section.
If I go to the system preferences pane under shaing on this particular folder the missing item is called "Users". I know I deleted it, just wondering how to put it back. Clicking on the little + sign under Users does not work.
This seems to be the reason that I can not see this folder in SMB shares because all my other shared folders have the "staff" / "Users" and show up on my PC SMB shares just fine. Please help me correct this permission.

File Sharing permissions

I have 2 iBooks in the same office. They are set for file sharing. I have trouble moving files from one computer to the other. Always get the message that I don't have the proper permissions. How does one resolve this problem - so that all files can be easily moved from one computer to the other?

Not sure what folders you['re trying to copy/move from/to.
Go get SharePoints from , http://www.hornware.com
Install on both macs.
Configure shared folders & permissions using this fine utility.
(sharepoints app manages the samba server files that regulate sharing permissions. It's a GUI view into the smb.conf setup)
