Sharing photo's, two users on one computer

Hi,
I have two user's on my computer, both with different log on's etc. How can another user look at my photo's that are currently in aperture with out having to move folders around. Is there an easier way then just making multiple copies and saving them else where?
Can this also be done with iTunes so that we can share music without having to make duplicates?
Thanks.

You could probably move your Aperture library to a location outside your home folder, where the second user could open the library. You'd need to be careful about permissions, and I'm not 100% sure how it would work.
For iTunes, sure you can do it. Often it's easiest to just put the songs in a shared location, and have both people maintain their own iTunes libraries (thus playlists and playcounts aren't shared, but the song files themselves are). You can also share the library file, but it's more difficult.
Not too tough to do, but I don't feel like typing it up and helping with troubleshooting (especially in an Aperture forum)... do a Google search; it's been documented fairly extensively out there and I'm sure MacUpdate also has tools to help with this.

  • When sharing photos between two users, if one user uploads new photos, only he can view them. Any help on this issue?

My iPhoto library is in Shared Folders so both users can access and edit the pictures. However, if one users uploads new photos, for some reason these become only available to him and the other user cannot even view them.
All permissions have been set so that both users have them on the shared folders. For some reason, when creating a folder, the permissions are not kept....
    Please help.

The same thing has started happening to us since upgrading to iPhoto 11 and Lion. If I import photos from my camera, then my partner can see thumbnails of those photo, but cannot click them to see them sull size. Similarly if my partner imports photos.
We have used a shared iPhoto library stored in Users/Shared/Photos for several years and everything has been fine until now.
I am backing up now and will then check and repair the library permissions. I'll post back the results.

  • Sharing files between two users on one computer

I have two user accounts on my Macbook so that I can use two different .Mac accounts. I want to be able to access files from both users accounts. Is there a way to do this without having to copy files into the "Public" or "Shared" folders?

You could create a new folder at the root "/" level. Put the file in there. More than likely each of you will have to modify permissions after editing the file.
OR you could put the file on an external drive.

  • ITunes Shared library with all users on one computer

I am trying to share my iTunes (version 8.2) library with all the users on my computer. So far, this is what I have done:
    1) I have moved the music folder into the shared folder.
    2) I have selected "Add to Library" in all three accounts.
    3) I have tried checking and unchecking the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library."
Since then, I have added some CDs that had some songs that I already had. When I loaded these CDs, I deleted the duplicates that had the worse sound. Since then, everything is unwinding. The additions on one user account are not being added to the others. When I delete a track, iTunes (obviously) says that it can't find the song anymore. What's odd is that I then delete the one that is missing, and both are missing now: the one that I deleted on the original account and the one that I did not delete on the original account.
I am starting to think that I need to start from scratch. So, to make a long story short (too late), how can I share my iTunes library with all users on one computer, where I can make a change in one account that will update automatically on the other accounts. If it can't be updated automatically, how can I add/delete files without causing the headaches I am currently having?
    Brian

I actually followed this, but I still had problems that I listed above. Is there any way that when you make changes to one account (even if there is only one main account where changes are made), the changes are automatically (or at least easily) applied to the other user accounts?

  • I tried to set up two users on one computer, now I can't make iTunes match work for either.

Lots of people seem to be having multiples user problems on iTunes, but I can't find a solution to mine so please help.
I got a new iMac.  Switched it on.  Connected to iTunes Match - all fine and dandy.
After a couple of weeks I decided I should follow Apple's advice and set up a separate user account on the imac for my wife.  I connected to iTunes match using her user name and down loaded a bunch of her favourite music.
Naive fool that I was, I didn't realise I had fallen into Apple's moronic multi-user trap. Only one user on one computer can use it????  Why???
I thought that it was me being stupid so I switched everything off - including iTunes Match.  Now nothing works.
If I log on with my iTunes ID and try to switch on iTunes Match it asks me if I want to add this computer, and then gives me the "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID - you can't use it for 90 days" message.
If I use my wife's iTunes ID, it asks her if she would like to subscribe for £21.99 a year.
The exact same thing happens whether I sign into the computer itself with my account or hers.
This is awe inspringly annoying.  Please tell me how to fix this.
    thanks.

At this time there is no "solution." You'll simply have to wait the 90 days to re-enable iTunes Match.
For now here is my suggestion. In your User Account, in OS X, sign out of whatever iTunes Store account you are signed in with. Then sign in with your store account and leave it at that. Now sign out of your OS X User Account, sign into your wife's OS X User Account and sign into the iTunes Store with her Apple ID (if necessary sign out of the account first).
Now, you can go back to your OS X User Account and attempt to enable iTunes Match. You will probably get the "wait 90 days" message. If so leave it, mark your calendar, and wait for the 90 days to expire. You can try contacting iTunes Store support at <https://expresslane.apple.com> if you wish, but I really do not know how useful that will be.
Incidentally, you get the message to pay for the service when trying to enable it on your wife's Apple ID because the service has not been purchased using that Apple ID. iTunes Match is designed to be a single-user service that is never signed out of and is associated with one, and only one, Apple ID and a regional store.

  • How can I consolidate all photos from different users on one computer?

We just enable one computer to be the "Family" computer. I want to be able to consolidate all photos from the different users into one location. That way no matter wich user is login they can see and browse all the family photos. How can I do that? Do I need and external drive?
    Thanks in advance?
    MoMa

Move the iPhoto Library to the Users/Shared folder, or you can use an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Merge the Libraries as Larry says, with the paid version of Library Manager.
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Each account will have full access to the library, in fact, each account will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Itunes Match: Two users on one computer.

My wife and I share one computer. We switch between users. I set up my itunes match under my user name, then I swtiched to her user and
tried to set up ITM. no go I get this message
    Any advice?
    Cheers

You can only associate each computer (not account on the computer) to one apple id.  This is a restriction of match and automatic downloads from iTunes.  See the iTunes terms and conditions and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627.
I haven't tested it yet but I think if you have two user accounts on a machine and each has a different apple id, one of the accounts will have to login to match with the Apple ID that was authorized on the machine.  I think if they do that, the user's iTunes library will be matched and combined with the library of the other user''s appleid only up in the cloud.  You may or may not want that behavior.  Also, I think if the user switches back to their AppleID, as long as they kept copies of their music locally that music though also in the cloud would still be accessible since it is on the disk.   But anything showing with the cloud download icon (ie: stored only in the cloud) would disappear from the library until they login to match again since that music is not on the disk.   The relogin to match will go thru steps 1..3 but much faster on each relogin and all music in match would show up again. I think the user can go purchase music on their id, login to match on the match id, and iTunes will auto match those purchases since they are added to the physical library.
Note, this is speculation on my part based on the fact that I was able to logout of my match ID and login to another ID to updated some aps from the app store.  What happened was all my cloud music disappeared, local music stayed that was also present on the disk ws still there.   I downloaded some apps, logged out, and logged back in with my iTunes match apple id and everything came back.
I would caution not to do this on an iOS device.  On there, if the music is not in the cloud library when logging in and out of match across id's, it may be deleted.  Also, the relogin on the iOS device, for me at least with 13,000+ songs, takes 20 minutes on an iPhone 4S.

  • Using two users on one computer

    Hi,
I have had only one user on my powerbook since I bought it 4-5 years ago. I recently added a second user to my computer as a way to solve a problem I had with safari taking ages to load. It solved my safari problems but I have a few questions.
When I first logged into the second account, I noticed that things like my iTunes library was not there. I sorted that out just fine, but I noticed that the files in my movies and documents folders were also not there (about 60GB and 5GB for 65GB total). When I logged back into my old user account all the files were present. I copied the 65GB of data to my external drive, and logged into the second new user account.
One problem - when I look at the finder of both user accounts it shows I have 10GB space left on my internal drive. With all the files missing from my movies and documents folders, shouldn't I have 75GB free? Right now, I have copied my documents back from my external drive to the internal drive for the second new user, but I have no space for the movies files.
Now that I have the second user account setup and my safari is working fine, I would like to use only the new second account exclusively from now on - I just need a way to get the movies sorted out.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Tim

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

  • Sharing photos between multiple users on one Mac

I'm trying to figure out how to easily share photos imported in by one user to other users in my family on my mac. I'm assuming we don't have to import them multiple times. It seems cumbersome to this new mac user to share them. I find the issue with iTunes. Any help?

    HI Darien,
Here are all the links I have for the different kinds of sharing:
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • How can I sort photos from two users into one

I have two users on my Mac and I am trying to get all my photos onto my new External hard drive.  I want one user, one photo library stored on my external hard drive.  Help!

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager

  • Sharing Photos between two users

How do I set up a shared situation where my husband and I can both see our iPhoto pics when we are logged into our own accounts. B/c right now we can only see the pics in my account and not his.
    Thanks.

    KL2
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

My wife and I are going to share a MacBook and all our iTunes purchases are shared under one iTunes account.

I'm not 100% positive about this but I believe authorization is for a whole machine.

  • Two Users on one computer

I have an IPod Mini and a new shuffle, and have my iTunes set up with my own Library. My daughter just go a new IPod, 30Gig and needs to set it up, but I don’t wont to have her music mixed with mine. Is there a way to set up two different libraries on the same computer, and if so how will the auto launch work when one of us connects to the PC.?

I think you should have all of her music in playlists, which will still hold all of the information, and have yours in your regular music section. When you sync your music do it manually, but when your daughter syncs hers, click her name which is displayed when she plugs in her iPod, and have her manually select playlists. Ithink that should solve the problem. If not that, just load all of yours and her music, your library is infinite.
