Sharing Photos across Network - Features Of

Hi
I want to share my Library across the network with other users. I also want them to be able to copy and paste my pictures or atleast save them and also to be able to Search them.
I've tried this with 2 machines running iPhoto 5.04 and also 2 running 6.0.2 but I can't copy and paste unless I move the image from the Shared Album to the local Library and I can't search the Shared Library at all as it's greyed out.
Anyone know if it's possible to do a Search on a Shared Library and how? (wherher apple supported or not)
Thanks Matt
Macs o Plenty   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Okay. I think I have the solution. As I read it, you have two issues. First, you need to be able to share. Second, you want to copy photos from one computer to the other.
1. Go under the preferences section of iPhoto (under sharing) on the computer you want to share from and select "Share my photos". Make sure that you have either selected "Share Entire Library" or checked certain albums if you chose "Share Selected Albums." If you don't pick any albums with that option, nothing will show up on the other/destination computer.
On the other computer, go to the preferences section of iPhoto (under sharing) and make sure the option to "Look for shared photos" is selected. If so, you should see the library from the sharing computer show up in your album list. You should now be able to browse all of the libraries on the sharing computer (or at least the ones you selected, if you did not choose to share all of them).
2. To copy photos over to the library of the other computer (the one that is accessing the shared library of the first computer), select the photos that you want to add and drag them over to your library folder. iPhoto will start importing them for you.
That should take care of it. Let me know if it does not. You would not normally need to open any ports on your router as long as both computers are on the same network.
One more thing, if you want password protection, make sure to put a password under the sharing preferences for the computer you are sharing from.

  • Sharing photos across network isn't working

I've got an eMac with all my photos stored on it in the kitchen, centrally located for the family to access. It's got around 1200 photos, running iPhoto 6 on 10.4.7.
On my Mac Mini in the office, I'd like to be able to access those photos via the Shared feature. I've got it set up properly, but for whatever reason, the photos never "appear" in iPhoto on the mini.
When I click on the shared library, it shows the proper count at the bottom of the app, and a bunch of square boxes with dotted borders appear. If I leave it alone to think for a while, after about 5 minutes, it automatically flips back to my local library in iPhoto. Clicking back to the shared library shows no progress.
How can I get these photos to show up?

    Jacob:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
a bunch of square boxes with dotted borders appear.
That condition is typical when you don't have the correct access to the thumbnail files. So the place to start looking are the permissions for that iPhoto Library folder and its contents. I've not done any sharing so can't carry this much further. If you don't get a solution to your problem look at Tutorial #4 as a possible solution. I'm sure it would work over the network as all you'll need on the source files is read access. Just a thought.

  • Sharing photos between networked versions of Elements

Has anyone shared photos between different versions of Elements?  Specifically, I have Elements version 3 on a XP system.  Now I would like to add a new Windows 7_64bit system and run the latest version of Elements on it.  As I will be keeping both systems (networked), I would like both users to be able to use a shared folder of family photos.
    1)  Can multiple versions of Elements share a common/networked watched folder? (Not simultaneously)
    2)  If shared in this manner, are there any issues to address?
    3)  If not different versions, can the same versions share networked folders?
    Thank you

You can certainly have the same photos referenced by different PSE catalogs ( with the same or different versions of PSE, running on the same or different computers). Remember that a catalog just contains links to the photos.
There are a few gotchas to think about: If you change the tags of a photo in one catalog, the other catalog won't pick up the change unless you delete and reimport the photo.  If you change other fields, such as date/time, star rating, captions, notes, or GPS/map location, or if you edit the photo itself, then you can force the other catalog to pick up the change by selecting the photo(s) and doing Edit > Update Thumbnail. (This works for PSE 6 and later; don't know about PSE 3.)  And if you delete a photo from your disk in one catalog, it will become disconnected ("missing") in the other catalog, and you'll have to do File > Reconnect to find such missing photos.
If you want to share the catalog itself, see this FAQ:

  • RE:  sharing photos across a network with Lightroom

I own Lightroom but haven't starting using it, mostly because I've heard that it doesn't work if you accessing photos from multiple computers across a network.  Is that correct?  Or is there a way around this?

I do use Lightroom on multiple computers that can work on a single network and, I believe I have the same question.  So let me see if I can ask it in a bit clearer fashion to get more complete advice from others.
My workflow for LR has been to use the licenses on my desktop and on my laptop.   That works fine once my postprocessing flow is done and the processed raw files are exported in jpg form to working folders and incorporated into the LR Catalog.   Those ppd images can be transferred by Windows across the network and the exported jpgs can be imported into both LR catalogs and both catalogs are easily synchronized.
Where the workflow seems to break down is for the unprocessed RAW files.  If, for instance, I use my laptop for pping the images, than the actual processed raw files only appear with their changes on my laptop and in its LR catalog.  If I use my desktop for processing, the Raw files on the Desktop have the processing changes embedded but those changes don't appear in the RAW files in the laptop.  So I end up with raw files on 2 computers and only the LR catalog that actually processed the image has its processing data saved.   The other computer only holds unprocessed Raw files.
Is there anyway to transer the processed raw files from one LR catalog to another along with their processed data?   Currently I find myself processing the Raw files on the other computer a second time quite often, which seems redundant.
To the OP, is this what you were thinking about?

  • Trouble sharing songs across network

I'm trying to share songs on two PCs on the same network. I've enabled sharing on both PCs (Edit menu -> Preferences -> Sharing tab -> click "Look for shared libraries" and "Share my library on my local network" buttons). Unfortunately, neither PC is able to see the other shared library.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Well, I guess it's "regular" sharing, and not "Home Sharing."  Tricky.  I do see that the checkbox says "Home sharing computers and devices update play counts," but it's on the same screen under the regular sharing options.  Very confusing I think.
Soooo.  I didn't think I wanted Home Sharing because the description seemed to indicate that it was for copying songs across pc's on your home network, and specifically seems to indicate that it is only for songs purchased through iTunes.  I really don't necessarily need songs copied to both of my pc's, and I certainly wouldn't want only iTunes purchases copied.  So am I understanding this right?  Does Home Sharing only copy iTunes purchased songs?

  • Sharing photos across accounts on the same Mac

    Hi
Is there any way to import photos into my account that have been loaded my daughter into her own account. Both using the same Mac. I know about sharing but this seems to require her to have logged on so that I can see the library. I seem to remember that windows allows for an automatic search of recently loaded photos and imports them automatically if required. Anything like that for Iphoto?
    thanks
    Norrie

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

    TD

  • Trouble sharing files across networked computers

I frequently have this problem when trying to copy files from my MBP at home to my PowerMac at work and vice versa. Regardless of how the connection between the two machines is made (smb, MobileMe), when I try to copy a file or folder, I get a message saying 'You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named "filename.xxx".'
I am the administrator for both machines, and I am logged in to both as the administrator when this message occurs.
At this point, I have buttons giving me the option to Stop or Continue. Clicking Continue brings up a message saying 'The item "filename.xxx" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?'
Again I have the option to Stop or Continue. Clicking Continue gives me the message 'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.' This message comes up even though I am logged in as the administrator on both machines and I have made sure that I've got read & write privileges for that file.
At this point, I'm stymied. This occurs whether I'm attempting to transfer a single file, a folder, or an archive. I've adjusted sharing preferences on both machines so that I specifically have full privileges for both the source and target folders as well as the file(s) being moved. Both machines are running OSX 10.5.8.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance -

Hi Keven - just wanted to chime in that I can replicate this error on a nearly identically configured setup as yours, but like you, have no substantive response (yet) from Apple. In fact, my post disappeared. The only thing I see, perusing the forums, is that people are recommending Snow Leopard upgrade to solve numerous networking issues. I realize this is not a satisfactory answer. I will stay subscribed to your post and will let you know if Apple comes back to me with a good response as well.

  • Can't "see" shared music across network

I have my main iTunes library on the big iMac downstairs, which is cabled into my Time Capsule for it's network connection. I have "share my library" turned on. One of the ports on the TC is connected (via a mains-circuit ethernet extender plug-pair) to my old Belkin router up in the loft. My kids have an old 12" Powerbook and a PC up there, cabled into the router (I've turned off the Wifi, and just use it as a router).
The iTunes on the Powerbook refuses to see the shared library downstairs at all. Up until a week or so ago, the Mac in the loft was an FP iMac, and iTunes was seeing and playing songs from the shared library, through the same router set-up, with no problem. It's only since I have replaced it with the Powerbook that the sharing has apparently stopped.
The iTunes on the Powerbook is completely up to date, on 10.4.11, and I HAVE got "look for shared libraries" turned on...
    Any ideas, anyone?
    bestest,
    M.

After following some advice from a different posting, I loaded the gimp print drivers and recreated the printer in the printer listing using the gimp printer. This worked! The only problem I had was that I had to load the whole Mac OSX base system and then the print drivers. This messed up my system and I had to reset a bunch of user preferences, etc. It took me a couple of hours.

  • Problems sharing media across network via USB of E4200

Wasn't sure where to post this.... I have been using the e4200 for about a week.  So far, so good!  However, a primary reason I purch it was the ability to share via USB across my network (Files and such).  Read the approved USB drives that r compatible and although my specfic drive was not listed (WD, my Passport) I connected it to the e4200 and set a folder called "movies"to share.  In this folder I have both bluray rips (25-32GB) and standard rips (5gb or less).  Regardless of source, the content was not playable.  It buffered like crazy.  So, is it as simple as using an approved USB drive and I will be able to share appropriately?
The same folder plays great when connected directly to one of my media streamers USB drive, so don't think the drive/source is bad.
    Thank you!

What is the capacity of the your WD HDD? The maximum HDD capacity supported by E4200 is 3TB. What is the hardware version of the device, also please mention the current firmware version of E4200.
You have mentioned that the media is not playable. Does it not play at all or it takes time to buffer and then play?

  • Screensaver photos across network

Not sure if this is the right board to post this question.
Just got a second mac. I have an external HD connected to my original mac.
On my second HD is where I keep all of the photos.
I want to link my screen saver phots from the new mac to the photos from my original mac with the external HD.
So I go into system- PRefrences- Screensaver. Then I go into choose folder. I get a window where I can choose the folder. I go to the drive on my network that I want, into the iphoto folder, then into the originals folder. And I just get a message looking for slides, not photos come up. What am I doing wrong?

Not sure, but it sounds like a permission thing, the easiest way around it would be to log into the Serving Mac, with the Serving Mac's Username and PW, but a better way might be Sharepoints on the Serving Mac...

PS, just tried both methods from my QS to a Mini w/Ministack... worked like they should.

  • Can I share MOVIES with shared libraries across networked macs?

I have my main mac with several movies stored on an external with shortcut links showing in Itunes / Movies. Works fine and two different Apple TV's all work properly.
I have a third "Bedroom mac" that picks up the shared itunes library music only. How do I set up "Bedroom Mac Itunes" to be able to see movies on "main Mac external".
All are ethernet, "Main Mac" is the control unit with external drive and time capsule.

  • HT4858 Shared photo stream limits?

I've read that 1,000 photos is the limit to 'My Photostream'. Is there a limit to the number of total shared photos across multiple streams?
For example, can there be 1,000 photos in each of 4 shared photo streams for a total of 4,000 shared photos?

    According to Apple's website (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US), you can have any number of shared streams, each with up to a thousand photos in it. The only limitation is that it will only let you share 1,000 photos per hour, and 10,000 per day. It says you can have unlimited photo sharing over time, though, which brings me to my next question;
I'm interested to know if the 30 day limits that are on the iDevice photo streams are also true for the photo streams shared through iPhoto. Am I able to share old photos (older than 30 days, up to X number of years old, even) with friends and family through iPhoto?

  • What can I use to get shared media across OSes on my local network?

    Hey guys,
My family is getting a new home entertainment center and I've thrown together a PC from spare parts around the house to put behind it and I'd like to know if there's a program out there that would allow me to gather shared media across the local network (everyone else in my family uses Windows...mainly Vista   :-/ ).  If not, is there any other way I can access the shared media (short of putting Windows on the PC of course)?  I tried searching, but I couldn't seem to come up with anything.
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, so I've been working with Samba today, and I believe I have it working properly.  However, I can't seem to access any shared files/folders on machines that have Vista on them.
When I run smbtree, I get this output:
    \\HOMEMEDIA
    \\WINXPCOMP
    \\VISTACOMP1
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:445
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:139
    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP1<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP2<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    \\WIN7PC
I'm not really sure what to do here.  I've tried changing around settings in the smb.conf file, but I'm not really sure what exactly it is that I'm doing for every option.  Also, smbtree sometimes won't output a tree at all and it will just hang.  I'm quite confused, any suggestions on what I should try?
Also, one of my Windows 7 PCs won't show up on smbtree.  I can ping it though...maybe it's not on the right workgroup?
EDIT:  I was able to fix the problem with my second Windows 7 computer, apparently I had to change from 128-bit encryption to 40/56 bit encryption, then smbtree was able to pick up on it.

  • Sharing Libraries across accounts on one computer

I'd like to know an easy method to share iPhoto libraries across accounts on one computer. It looks like iPhoto is more or less ignoring this topic. I have searched the web for tips, found some, yet the instructions are complicated and what seemed to be the best one didn't work. Anyone in this forum that can help me?

haha, brian has a hidden message in there.
Anyway, here all the links I have for sharing. The last link for using ACLs is the one I think you are thinking of.
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine

  • Shared photo streams in iPhoto and Apple TV

Why is this proving so difficult for Apple to get right?
All I want to do is create private albums that I can share with family and have them sync back to my Mac so that all I need to do is organise my photos ONCE (i.e. on iPhone or iPad) and see these albums in iPhoto where they are also backed up locally.
I've created a shared photo stream album, shared it with my wife... she can see it on her phone... great.
I look in my iPhoto and there is no sign whatsoever that I've ever created a shared album. Just the main photo stream mess as usual.
Also, I go to my Apple TV and the same thing, just the same "every photo ever" mess.
I've recently taken to using Vimeo because this provides exactly what I need for home video. Create edited video in iMovie for iPad or Mac, then upload it to Vimeo, and share it only with family. I can then view them back on Mac, Apple TV, iPad etc.

Shared Photo Streams — Accept invitations for Shared Photo Streams, browse photos and comments, and receive notifications of new content.
AirPlay — Send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs). Also includes the ability to require an onscreen code to use AirPlay with your Apple TV.
iTunes account switching — Save multiple iTunes accounts and switch quickly between them.
Trailers — Search movie trailers. In the United States, see show times for local theaters.
Screen savers — New Cascade, Shrinking Tiles, and Sliding Panels screen savers.
Main menu— Reorder icons on the second page by holding down the select button on the remote.
Subtitles — SDH support for the deaf and hard-of-hearing as well as improvements to viewing and selecting subtitles.
Network configuration — Support for setting up advanced network options using configuration profiles.
Stability and performance — Includes general performance and stability improvements.
