Sharing pics among Users on same computer

I want to share the pictures on our MacBook between my wife and me. Each of us has a User account on this machine. I have stored the pictures in the Shared Folder, and would like to reference the pictures from each of our User accounts using iPhoto. However, IPhoto was set to the management default, so it duplicated all the pictures, and they now exist both in Shared and in My Pictures.
I need advice: am I trying too hard to be efficient by having the pictures in only one place? Should we go ahead and duplicate everything - it seems wasteful, and has the potential for confusion. What do you think?
Thanks, S

Two Problems and two solutions:
I have stored the pictures in the Shared Folder... iPhoto was set to the management default, so it duplicated all the pictures,
Chuck away the ones in the Shared Folder - put them in the trash. Just don't empty it yet, until you're sure that the Library does indeed contain all the Photos.
would like to reference the pictures from each of our User accounts using iPhoto
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • ITunes sharing between two users on same computer

i've tried searching for this, but i guess i don't know how to search it properly. What i need to do is have the itunes library of a different user account show up as a shared library on my main account (and visa versa) without having the laptop connected to a network.
Right now i have a lot of recordings for work in an itunes library of a different user account that i will need from time to time when teaching. i'd like to be able to have that show up as a shared library, and have my main library shared in the other user account so that i don't have to switch back and forth all the time. Using Tiger this worked like a charm, but with Leopard they only seem to share when my powerbook is connected to a network. i don't have a network connect at work nor am i likely to get one. Is there a setting i am missing?

All the files are on the computer, right, not external drives? And all the accounts you want to share between can Share their Libraries AND Look for Shared Libraries? And iTunes is running in each user account?
I have to say I've never used this WITHOUT an internet connection as I have 'always on' broadband, but I cannot imagine why it would need a network when it's between users on the same computer.

  • ICal sharing with multiple users on same computer

How can i set up iCal to share with multiple users on the same computer?

yes, BUT... you need a central repository for the master calendars, usually referred to a Calendar Server. If you are not using a Mac OS X Server on your private network, I think you can use web-based servers that use standard calendar protocol.

  • Sharing music between users on same computer

My wife and I share the same laptop yet have different itunes accounts.  I turned on the home share and can see my daughters music on her computer but my wife cannot see my music when she is signed onto her account.  I can go to my account and copy music into her library but there must be another way that we can see each others libraries.  I tried consolidating my library and that didn't work either.
How can we keep separate libraries on the same computer yet be able to view them the same way that home share allows us to view music on my daughters laptop?

    Hi,
isn't there another way to share iTunes libraries between users on the same Mac, i.e. so that they other user can listen to other user's songs but cannot add, delete or change anything?
To be specific I have my iTunes songs stored in the Music folder under my account (the standard way), but would like my kids being able to access my songs without being able to modify or delete any files. If I would copy my songs to the Public Folder, they would be able to modify or accidentally delete my songs - which I would like to avoid.
Any ideas welcome - but reading some of the articles in this forum I am not very optimistic that this is possible.

  • IPhoto Library Sharing by Multiple Users on Same Computer

Is there a "tried and true" way to set up iPhoto08 to allow my wife and I to share/access the Photo Library? I prefer not to set up external drive for library. It appears that photos I download from camera to iPhoto on my "login" do not load to the library on my wife's login and vise/versa.
Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully not too technical please. Thanks.

There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.

If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location.

  • Sharing iphoto library on the same computer between different users

Can anyone tell me how (without having to write my own code) I can share photos easily (so I can teach my parents, who know nothing about mac, how to do it) between different users on the SAME COMPUTER?
I am so frustrated! You can share with anyone else in the world, but when it is on the same computer I can't figure out how to share!

    Hi Mereditty,
Here are all the links I have for sharing a couple of different ways.
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • Home sharing to Apple TV with multiple users on same computer

I have two different users on the same computer.  To facilitate sharing their music and movies to eachother, they are each using Home Sharing with the same Apple ID.  As long as both users remain logged in, this works with no problem.   Except for Apple TV.  The Apple TV can see each library, so they both show up in the list under Computers, but only one is accessible.  It's either the first one that broadcast itself, or the first one that Apple TV connected to, I'm not sure which.  But, once that's established, the second library will remain in the Computers list, but any attempt to connect to the library will fail.  It appears there is a limitation that Apple TV can only connect to a single library per physical computer, even though it can tell there are multiple libraries there.
Does anyone have any idea how to work around this without consolidating the libraries?  Being able to connect to multiple libraries is the goal, not consoludating them.

I don't have that set up anymore, but used to. I had no problems sharing from either library. Of course it may have changed since I used it, but wouldn't see why.

  • Help with Sharing iPhoto 9.5.1 library between users on same computer

    Hi,
I have upgraded operating systems to Maverick on my macbookpro which also upgraded iphoto to 9.5.1.  Previously in IPhoto I could choose to share the library in each of three user accounts.  The third account was used only for gathering photos to make books, calendars etc.  There does not appear to be a way to do this now.  How do I share libraries on the same computer without creating a library on a separate device?
So frustrating....I was right in the middle of creating a book.
    Thanks for any help.

That particular feature has been discontinued with iPhoto 9.5.1.  However, you  can use iCloud to share photos via  Shared Photo Streams. Each user account will need their own iCloud account and each user can create Shared Photo Streams to be shared with the other accounts.  The photos in the SFSs can be downloaded by any account with access to the stream.
Anbother option would be to create a Dropbox account and when the 2 accouts come across photos to be used in a project they can export the original file to the Dropbox in the account so they can be downloaded into the 3rd account and imported into the project library.
If you have an external HD you could put the project library on it and access it from each of the other 2 accounts. Project photos could be added to that library directly by the other 2 accounts by exporting to the desktop and importing into the projects library with an easy library switch.  Or one can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy selected albums between libraries.

  • Sharing files between different users on same computer

how do I go about sharing files between two users on the same computer?
also, what about iTunes, can I transfer songs between users, or do I have to pay for it everytime, even though it's on the same computer?

You can control sharing of a user's itune library in the sharing preference. It is good for users on the same computer and the same local network (usually your house of small office).
As for files on another users folder, they have to either change the permissions of the parent folder (get info) or put the file to be shared into the public folder.

  • Sharing ITunes Library with 3 users on same computer

I am having a hard time figuring out how to share the I-tunes library amongst different users on the same computer. I purchase the songs on one userid but my kids each have a separate login and would like to be able to listen to songs with whomever is logged in. I'm sure this is easy - I just can't figure it out today

I'd like to be able to share music between users who can log in on the same computer. Is this possible and how.
I currently have all the music in the admiistrators log in and can't see it when I log in as a regular user.
    Thanks for any help

    Hi,
Follow the instructions given in this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195
You might also want to uncheck the preference in the other Users accounts to prevent them from adding the song file to the hard disk when importing music. This means that only YOU as the admin can add files to the Library. You will find this preference under iTunes in the menu bar, Click on the "Advanced" tab and then the "General" Tab.

  • Sharing iTunes with new user on same computer

    Hi--
I'm adding a user to my computer and I want him to be able to access my music. I've moved the music to a public folder, updated everything; however, when I try to add to library in his account, the music folder has a minus bar on it, even though share music is turned on in MY user account.
I figure I'm doing something wrong, but don't know what it is, and followed all the suggestions on the apple page.
    Any other ideas? Thanks!

I don't suppose there's anyway I can just "UNDO" everything and start all over?
Unfortunately no, however we can try to resolve this. Inside your username home folder is the sub-folder labeled Music. Did you just move the iTunes Music folder that's inside the iTunes? If so then you'll need to put it back into the iTunes folder and move the entire folder to your username music folder. The iTunes Library & iTunes Music Library.xml file within the iTunes folder contains your library & playlists info. They need to be kept in the main iTunes folder.

  • How do you transfer songs to second iTunes user account; same computer

How do I transfer songs from one user account to another user account on the same computer?
I've given my son his own account on our second computer. Prior to this, he shared his sister's iTunes account, using a playlist to populate his ipod. Now that he has his own account, he wants to transfer his music to his own account. Is it possible to do this quickly? I've been able to copy some actual song files from the first iTunes library and physically move them to the new account using a flash drive, but this is cumbersome. Any better options? Thanks.

    Name wrote:
Sounds like a good plan. What folder/files do I move...the entire 'iTunes Media' folder?  ...and how do I point to it...through the advanced preferenced feature?
It would be the folder you have selected as your Library folder. Usually Mac HD/Users/[User]/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
    See below:
Select Mac HD/Users/Shared/Music - CREATE IT if need be
Move your iTunes folder to the new Music folder. You'll probably have to "re import" the Library in iTunes. (Clear the old library first)
But ionce it;s in the Shared Music folder, EVERY account on the comp can access those files for their own library (whichever songs THEY want) and you onle need ONE copy of everything.
Each user can only access or modify THEIR OWN library while logged on so it prevents someone erasing another's library, because the iTunes Library file is in a locked folder when others are logged in.
