Sharing Preferences panel missing
This is probably an old issue, I just can't seem to locate it here anywhere, and Googling only produces fixes I have already tried. Some of the Macs I support (all running 10.4.11) are missing the Sharing preferences panel in System Preferences. This would not be so bad--it doesn't seem to affect performance at all--but that I cannot re-name machines without access to that panel. I have installed the ARD client, installed the CD/DVD Sharing update, both of which seem to have fixed this in the past. Not now. What's up?

Could be many things, but usually preventable and caused by pre-existing OS or Disk corruption...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

Magic Mouse preference panel missing
I just put a magic mouse into operation and while it is "working" it is not doing some things I want it to and I am unable to change any settings because the "Mouse" preference panel has not changed to a dedicated "Magic Mouse" pref panel. All the Mouse pref panel provides is what amounts to a demo of the features of a Magic Mouse. No customization is possible.
I've looked through other posting in this site to no avail. I have read about a conflict with something called USB Overdrive but I am not in possession of that.

DNG preferences panel missing options
In the DNG preferences panel, version 5.4.0.57 only 3 options appear. Compatibility, Preview & Original Raw File, under Compatibility in custom settings I can check Linear & uncompressed but nowhere can I find "Image Conversion Method" or "Compression" check boxes. I have installed DNG converter on both my PC (XP-sp3) and my laptop (Vista 64bit) with identical results.
Where am I going wrong?
Some converted file receive a 1:3 compression others a 1:4 compression, what gives?

Linear is the conversion method option, with a different UI. No functionality has been lost.

The reason the compression and linear options have been moved to a custom dialog is very few users truly understood them, and many users would change their default values in ways that wasted disk space because they did not understand what they were doing or why they were doing it. Only in VERY rare use cases does is make any sense to use to custom compatibility option. The main compatibly version option does exactly what nearly all users need to do, when they want to create DNG files that are readable in older versions of Camera Raw.
Can you please explain exactly why you think you need to control the custom options? -
Automator: managing Sharing preferences panel
I would know if it's possible to write a workflow in Automator, or an AppleScript, that let me quickly activate the "sharing internet" (via Airport, from Ethernet) option in the Sharing panel of the system preferences.

Sharing preferences panel is blank
I've seen this topic before, I apologize to repeat it. I had to do this to tell that the answer given here didnt't work for me. I still get a blank panel.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
"Firewall" and "Internet" buttons missing from "Sharing" preferences page
Hi,
I recently upgraded two servers to 10.4.3 (one was running 10.2 and one was running 10.3). On both servers now the Firewall and Internet tabs are missing from the Sharing preferences. Also, under the list of services on the Sharing prefs, there are only three services listed:
REmote Login, ARD, and Remote Apple Events. No other services are listed.
I found this problem because something in the firewalls changed and was blocking access to the servers via ARD. If I stop the firewall, then ARD works. So I wanted to go into the firewall settings and open up the ports required by ARD. Lo and behold, no Firewall tab on the Sharing page!
I've searched everywhere for info on what could make most of the services disappear, along with the Firewall and Internet tabs. But I can't find anything. Any ideas out there?A call to Apple confirmed that the majority of services on 10.4 Server are now handled through Server Admin rather than through the Sharing preferences window.

Processor Preferences Panel...missing?
In 10.5, I used Onyx to activate the Processor Preferences pane in System Preferences. After upgrading to 10.6, it's not there anymore. Was this moved to a new location in Snow Leopard?
thanks...Well, by the time I saw your last response, I was on the phone with Apple support. They had me login as root, and install the Processor Preferences pane under the super-user account.
When I did, it said that in order to use the Processor Pane it would first need to be installed, which it did. It's working now.
Well, there are two things.
First, it's 32-bit, so when I run it from the 64 bit preference panel, it would restart System Preferences using the 32-bit version. Apple suggested that I may want to do a 'Get Info' on the System Preferences app in the Applications directory and select the 32-bit version instead of the native 64-bit as the default.
One more thing - we couldn't figure out how to get the icon to display in the Menu Bar. Even if I check the option, it's ignored and will appear unset the next time the pane is opened. That's no a big deal for me. The important thing is that the CPU settings do work as expected.

Sharing Preferences won't open
For some unknown reason I can't open the Sharing preferences pane, as a of very recently.
When I first open the pane it tells me:
*To use the “Sharing” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen*
So it quits and reopens, and then I get another error:
*Preferences Error*
*You can’t open Sharing preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.*
Maybe there is a way to fix this with time machine? Can anyone help?willkaufhold wrote:

This message usually appears when a 32 bit System Preference is installed on a Mac running Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode: System Preferences by default runs in 64 bit mode & must restart in 32 bit mode to use 32 bit preference panels.
So it quits and reopens, and then I get another error:
*Preferences Error*
*You can’t open Sharing preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.*
This would indicate that somehow you have a PPC-only version of the Sharing Preference installed.
Do you have any idea how this could have happened? For instance, did you drag anything from one OS to another, use Pacifist to install something, or run a utility that strips code resources from files, like Monolingual? -
There is an error in my sharing preferences.
I have a Macbook Pro running Yosemite. When I click on Sharing in Preferences I get a "Preferences Error, There was an error in sharing preferences". I reloaded Yosemite today hoping that would fix the problem. If anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.
I have Remote Desktop loaded on this computer.

I hope the title is enough info, please ask. In the mean time I have created an applescript to open preferences/ sharing and uncheck then check the file sharing box. This works but I would obviously prefer it just work normally. I have no corrupt preference files. Perhaps a file is missing? Thank you.

Thanks! The problem (not its unidentified source) was solved by reinstalling the missing PreferencesPanes files with *Pacifist 2.5*: I extracted the /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ files from the Leopard install disk (very cool software! and no restart was needed to verify the success of the operation).
I did not try to look for the missing files with the following "+Search your Mac for preferencepane using CMD+F. Ensure that you select This Mac and File Name, change Kind to System files and change don't include to include.+"

In my Finder window the Shared Section is missing. Its even checked under Finder>Preferences>Sidebar. Do I need to edit something in my Library. If so, what file? in what folder? I rebooted, reset, etc to no avial.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Export Configurations is disabled in Network Preferences panel...
In 10.5.8, I want to export the current network configuration to a file for later import/restoration. Within the services menu, "Import Configurations" is enabled, but "Export Configurations" is dimmed. The Network Preferences Panel is unlocked, and I am the admin user.
What am I missing?

I am booting 10.5.8 from an external drive that was in this machine at one time.
If I boot to the current drive (10.6.2), then "Export Configurations" is enabled.
I want to grab the network configuration I had on 10.5 and import it into 10.6.2.

Sharing Preferences Does Not Have CD/DVD Check Box.
HI Folks,
I just got the New Mac Mini. Has no Optical Drive. Was thinking of using the Share CD/DVD from Another Computer on the network.
Though the Sharing Preference Does Not Have CD/DVD Check Box. Was wondering if I am missing something!

Energy Saver Preference Panel in 10.5.6 not restarting/shutting down
I have my Macs scheduled for automatic shut down and start up with the Energy Saver Preference Panel Schedule feature. However, since I upgraded to 10.5.6, two of my older Macs (a 2006 Intel iMac and a 2004 PowerPC G4 PowerBook) no longer respond to the shut down or start up time.
In fact, the iMac seems to ignore preferences I've selected in the Energy Saver panel. For example, my settings for sleep are the same as they were in 10.5.5, but now the behavior is different. Previously, the iMac would be in a light sleep that I could awaken simply by touching the mouse. Now, moving the mouse has no effect, I must hit a key to wake it from what by comparison is a heavy, deep sleep. And when it does wake, either the hard drive or the CD/DVD drive makes a lot of noise as it grinds to wakefulness. Additionally, this iMac is connected to a shared printer. When another computer prints to this shared printer, nothing will happen until the iMac is shaken from its slumber—previously, it would print just fine. Also, the Time Machine hard drive connected via Firewire 400 does not seem to run during these times of deep sleep—only when the iMac has been rousted.
I updated both machines with the 10.5.6 combo updater. For what it's worth, another Mac I upgraded (a 2008 iMac) seems to sleep and wake and restart each day just fine.
Is there a .plist file I need to delete? If so, which one? Is there anything else I should be looking at?Welcome to discussions - Your Energy Saver should be in the second line of your System Prefs window next to Hardware.- it's the fourth one in and looks like a light bulb.
If you can't find it, try logging in as another user and see if it's there.
Are you saying that your computer won't shut down when you have scheduled it? Could there be a program running that would interfere with a shutdown?
Please report back, and let us know which model G5 you have.

Hello all, There is some inconsistency in asset and inventory report because there is 2 PS documents were created (via CJ8G) with a WBS which was deleted after the creation of these 2 documents. Now after WBS deletion, the documents have no value in
