Sharing Preferences won't open

For some unknown reason I can't open the Sharing preferences pane, as a of very recently.
When I first open the pane it tells me:
*To use the “Sharing” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen*
So it quits and reopens, and then I get another error:
*Preferences Error*
*You can’t open Sharing preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.*
Maybe there is a way to fix this with time machine? Can anyone help?

This message usually appears when a 32 bit System Preference is installed on a Mac running Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode: System Preferences by default runs in 64 bit mode & must restart in 32 bit mode to use 32 bit preference panels.
So it quits and reopens, and then I get another error:
*Preferences Error*
*You can’t open Sharing preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.*
This would indicate that somehow you have a PPC-only version of the Sharing Preference installed.
Do you have any idea how this could have happened? For instance, did you drag anything from one OS to another, use Pacifist to install something, or run a utility that strips code resources from files, like Monolingual?

    Hello, Gordon.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that will walk you through some troubleshooting steps for this issue.  Start with the attached section in the article below.
Tip: If you see a sheet or dialog that states 'Enter the password for user "email address'", this indicates that the email service provider is having an issue with the password being sent by Mail, or there is an issue with the email account. Contact the email service provider for support. Choose Window > Connection Doctor click "Show Detail" then click "Check Again". The information displayed in the "Show Detail" drawer may include details from the email service provider about what the issue is. Look for headers that start with "[ALERT]".

  • Sharing Preference pane "Cannot Open" error?

    Hi all,
Im running Tiger 10.4.6 on a MacBook Pro 2.0, connecting to the Internet through an ADSL router via an Airport Express base station, everything fully updated.
Suddenly, when trying to open the "Sharing" preference-pane, I get this error:
    Preferences Error
You cannot open Sharing preferences pane on this
computer. Contact the developer of this software
    for a newer version.
I haven't installed or updated anything in the last few days, and it worked earlier today.
I have tried restarting, and deleted the following preferences, to no avail:
    com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    com.apple.networkConfig.plist
    Any ideas?
    TIA,
    Thomas
    MacBook Pro 2.0 / 2Gig RAM / 100gb, 7200 rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hello again, and thank you for your replies, and sorry for the late response.
First off; I have installed the latest 10.4.7 Combo Updater, but that did not install a new SharingPref.prefPane. I even removed the old one, before running the freshly downloaded Combo installer.
Actually, I did the exact same thing a week ago - same result.
So, in the meantime I had some work I needed to finish, so I didn't have time to investigate further, until this morning. Where I, much to my surprise, found the SharingPref.prefPane back in /Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and it was still the wrong version!
So "something" must be installing the wrong - old - SharingPref.prefPane. Well, I took a peek at my install log, searched for "sharing", and lo and
    behold!
The mystery is - somewhat - solved. The old SharingPref.prefPane comes from and old Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 installer, that contains an installer called PantherSharing.pkg. See search from Console.app below.
What puzzles me, is the fact that I installed the wrong (old 2.2) version of ARD, to monitor a couple of servers, and of course uninstalled that version, and installed 3.0, the minute I realized my error.
How can that old installer keep "updating" my system, even after I've removed the old ARD? It's as if something is running the receipt, witch I funny enough, can't find on my system anymore.
The dates don't match either, or they do, but I would expect more entries from last week, where I removed the old SharingPref.prefPane and it mystically appeared again this morning.
The receipt must have run in the last week, but I can't find anything in my logs - install.log.0.gz OR install.log.
Maybe running a reciept dosen't get logged?
Ohh well Anyway - beneath is a copy of my log, and the question now is; How do I get the correct Pref-pane, when the Combo Installer doesn't install it?
Thanks for your help everybody, and shawnhm, thanks for Sharing my Pane ... Thank you, Thank you, I'm here all week

  • "Accounts" in "System Preferences" won't open

I am trying to access the "Accounts" window in "System Preferences", but it won't open.
    I am getting two messages:
"To use the "Accounts" preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."
    I clicked on "Ok"
    *Preferences Error*
Could not load Accounts preference pane.
I have restarted and shut down my MBP to see if that helped. Didn't work. What am I suppose to do?

I have the same issue and I have tried everything. I really would love to resolve this System preference error as well! It will take me forever to reload all of my pro apps and even longer to restore my user settings. This almost makes backing up your data impossible if re-installing is the last option. I've tried restarted in safe mood. Trying different admin rights, trying to extract the corrupt files using pacifist, repairing disk, I've had this issue for months and I have had no luck with finding solution. Any one for more solution ideas?
I also came across this with working with Apple Remote Desktop!

  • Popup message: "Google password required, enter your password for .."  Internet account window in system preferences won't open.  How do I fix?

Google accounts are suddenly offline.  Popup: "Google Password Required, Enter your password for ... in Internet Accounts."  continues to System Preferences/Internet Accounts.  Account window won't open.  I just get the grey circling system-working-on-it icon.  Suggestions.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to open the preference pane. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Ditto to the above. I too am having the same symptoms of no audio within GB3 only after upgrading but levels light up perfectly plus I am unable to to address GB prefs without first rebooting. What's up with this? All other iLife '06 apps run fine on my G4 Digital Audio. This was after a fresh install of iLife '06 by the way running X.4.5.
I tried looking up the answers on the link that samccormack kindly provided above but nothing happens. I simply get an error message. Might you be able to let us know on this thread what the link was about or how to address the no audio and vanishing preferences that refuse to open up within GB3?

  • System preferences won't open

I'm getting an error message every time I try to open system preferences, from the dock or through the folders. Software updates were downloaded last night and that's when the problem began. I have no idea how to fix this and am trying to save myself a trip to the mac store for genius bar help...
    error message is..
The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click Relaunch to launch the application again... blah blah..\
the exception error in the report is:
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    any help???

I think I fixed it! fingers crossed it held up after about 10 reboots it finally opened up. I still think it was to do with the software updates too...

  • Mail preferences won't open (incomprehensible archive)

    Hi there,
I've been struggling with this issue for a while and I haven't found a solution that works.
When I go to Preferences... in Mail, nothing happens. Mail is still working fine -- downloading and syncing mail from several accounts (one GMail IMAP, one Exchange and one POP), but I can't change the preferences.
When this first started happening, it was just the General pane that wouldn't open. Mail Preferences would open onto the Accounts pane (the last opened), but switching to the General settings pane wouldn't have any effect. Then I made the mistake of trying to switch to the General pane and closing preferences -- of course, next time I tried to open preferences, nothing happened at all.
I've tried trashing the com.apple.mail.plist and even the com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist files, but this has no effect.
I do have an interesting message in the Console, which indicates that a preference file somewhere is invalid, but I can't figure out which one! I've included the error log at the end of this post, in case it's helpful for someone (I guess someone at Apple can symbolicate the log and get a stack trace, which might help). This error occurs twice each time I try to show the preferences.
I'm a reasonably experienced software developer, so please ask if you'd like any extra details to help debug this issue -- I'm happy to dig into bundles, logs and muck around in the terminal.
    Thanks for your help!
    Adam

I actually got this issue fixed at the Genius Bar in the London Apple Store last week -- thanks guys!
It turns out that the application bundle for Mail.app was corrupted, and the fix was to replace the app and perform a 10.5.8 Combo Update.
I do have GrowlMail installed, but it wasn't the issue in this case.

  • Spaces Preferences won't open from Menu Bar

If I select "Open Spaces Preferences..." from the Spaces pull-down menu in the Menu Bar, nothing happens. I can open Spaces Preferences from the System Preferences utility (in the Dock), and all other functions in Spaces seem to work fine. The same problem shows up on my iMac (Leopard) and my MBP (Snow Leopard). Same problem shows up in other accounts on these machines, too.
    Any suggestions or insights?
    Thanks,
    Robin

It's weird that this problem has somehow propagated to all of your machines and accounts. Really weird. Makes me think some third party gadget, common to all machines/accounts, is interfering with the correct operation of the menubar icons.
Some things I would try if this were happening to me (besides contemplating third party conflicts):
Remove the icon from the menubar (e.g., command-drag it off) and put it back again.
Look at log files in Console to see if there is any kind of error message appearing when you try to start up spaces preferences from the menubar.
(Re)Moving the relevant preferences to see if they are corrupted. I am thinking of
    home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
But I am betting on the third party explanation.

    Bill,
Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.

  • Certain files under System Preferences won't open

When I open System Preferences and try to open the files 'Security' 'Sound' and 'Mouse and Keyboards' I only get a message telling me that the file can't be opened due to an unexpected error. All of the other files in the folder work fine, but these three don't, at all. I bought my macbook a week ago and everything else works great, I just can't access a few preferences.

Use your Disk Utility App to Verify your hard drive's Disk Permissions then run the Repair the Disk Permissions option.
Not promising that will fix it but the procedure should reconnect all your internal functions and features.
Also, download Onyx, a free OSX maintenance program, that you can set up to run automatically (say late at night when you are asleep) and to run other maintenance procedures which may also correct the problems.
If that fails then the next option is a reinstall of OSX from your original backup OSX CDs (found in your MacBook box).
    Hope this helps!
