Sharing printer that is connected to Windows PC

Hi, I have an HP 1510 All-in-one printer, and I am trying to share it across my network of 3 computers. Two are windows, and they share the printer just fine. But I can't figure out how to share the printer, which is hooked up to a windows desktop, with the mac laptop.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
iFelix has written a couple of excellent guides on how to do this.

  • Adding network/shared printer that's on a Windows box

    Hi all,
    I was wondering how I could add a printer that is on a windows box;
to be more specific, I know I can add it...but the problem is that os x will only add it as a generic postscript driver...it won't add it as the printer itself (a Canon iP3000). I've tried choosing the appropriate printer driver but it's not listed..I've installed the package manuallly and still nothing.
    any help?

The Canon-supplied driver is for USB only. Get Gutenprint from here:

  • Unable to print to Canon iR-Adv C5045 from MacBook Pro that is connected to Windows computer and shared on the network

I am unable to print to a Canon iR-Adv C5045 from a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.4) that is connected to Windows NT computer and shared on the company network.  I am connected to the network by ethernet.
I was able to add the printer manually by going to Advanced, Windows printer via spoolss, smb://computer name/printer name and used the Canon iR-ADV C5045/5051 driver.
When I print it appears to be printing but nothing comes out.  I checked the completed jobs from the Print Queue and the job is listed.  Checked the print log on the printer and it isn't listed.  Is there a different driver I should be using for this configuration?

You may not have a choice as to what driver you can use. If the ADV C5045 only has the default UFR2 printer kit, then you will have to use the UFR2 driver - which is what you are using now. If you can access the copier, press the Counter Check button on the control panel. Then on the display you will see an entry labelled Check Device Configuration. Select this and scroll down through the pages. You are looking for an entry called PS. If you see it then the Canon does have the optional Postscript printer kit enabled and this will let you use an alternate driver. One suggestion would be to create the printer again using the same setting that you have done already but this time select the Generic Postscript driver included with the OS rather than use the Canon driver. This will help to determine if the driver is the cause.
If there is no PS option you will have to use the UFR2 driver and this could be the problem, as the Canon drivers don't always work well on a Mac via a Windows share. As a test, are you able to create a print queue directly to the Canon rather than via the Windows share? If you can, then this will let you check if the driver currently installed will work, as there can be settings on the copier that can block/stop you from printing. Assuming that you can print to the Canon with a direct connection from the Mac, then we can work on getting the printing via the shared queue. But if it doesn't print directly from the Mac, then it confirms that it may not be the server and more to do with the copier.

  • Printer Unable to connect on Windows 8.1 64 bit based Lenovo Laptop.

We have HP LaserJet 3030 all in one printer installed on Windows XP Professional. We are using LAN network to connect the printer on network. But our Printer Unable to connect on Windows 8.1 64 bit based Lenovo Laptop. Also check for windows update for this issue. Please fix this quickly.

Try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?
If you can't get a working installer via the standard download links, try the following download links instead:

  • Adding a Windows Shared Printer that I cannot see

In 10.4 I was able to add a windows printer that was shared on my network that I couldn't see by hitting alt-More Printers. It would give me an advanced mode. I cannot find how to do this in Leopard. Can someone help me please.

    Hi,
    hade said in this thread-http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1201487&tstart=0
"When you're adding a new printer right-click on the top bar with all the buttons, then choose customize (or what ever it's called in english) and add the advanced button.
With that advanced button you kind of get a window like the old one, where you can choose the windows printer via samba."
I still need to toggle the printer and I can't duplex unless I connect via USB, but.......

  • Cannot print to or connect to Windows-driven imagesetter

Our print shop uses an ABDick DPM34 HSC imagesetter that is run from a Windows 2000 RIP for making plates for offset printing. I usually send the files to the platemaker using a Mid 2012 Mac Pro 12 core running 10.8.2. On Tuesday (3-19-13) I sent a bunch of print jobs to the RIP – everything working fine as usual. The next day, Wednesday the 20th, I needed to resend a redo job and the print job would stop on a "Hold for Authorization." The job would not authorize using the regular account/password or the Guest account. I can no longer mount the shares for the Windows computer, as well. It shoes up in Finder window sidebar but the login window will only shake when given the correct account/password or the Guest account. Any other computer in our shop (running 10.7.5 or below) can print and connect to it. I can not fathom what has changed from Tuesday to Wednesday that would cause this. The only software that was installed between this period according to the About This Mac System Report were virus definitions. I have tried various remedies from various threads including checking that the clocks on the two machines were in sync, trying to connect through Connect to Server and the Terminal, resetting the printers (but now I can't readd the printers since it won't authorize my connection to the computer), reinstalling ML (I had since upgraded to 10.8.3 – no help – and the reinstall installed the same version when I was hoping it would start over at 10.8), and trying to connect through ethernet, WiFi and directly into the Windows machine. I'm at a loss and any leads would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Try opening Keychain Access and removing the entry that you had saved for this connection to the Windows box. Then try adding the printer again or connecting to the shared folder.
FYI - If you enable LPR/LPD (could be called Unix Print Services in Win2k), then you can use LPD on the Mac instead of SMB. With the print service enabled on the Win2k server, on the Mac you add the printer by selecting the LPD protocol, entering the Win2k name or IP address in the Address field and the shared printer name in the Queue field. The last step is to select the appropriate printer model in the Use menu.

  • How do I delete a Shared Printer that is no longer here?

In the left pane in a finder window under "SHARED" there is a printer that use to be my sons. He moved out and took that printer with him, but I can't remove the shared printer reference now.
It's no big deal, but it is a small annoyance.
Anyone know how to remove this?
    27" iMac
    OSX 10.9.1
It's an HP printer. Not sure of the model, but the anme is hp00237df74c8d

Hmmm. Think I just solved this myself...
For those others that have this problem,
    System Preferences
         General
              Recent Items
Set recent items to zero then back again.
    NOTE:
This will remove your recent apps and documents as well.
    Thanks anyway!

  • Can Reader pick up the Default Page Size of a printer that is not the Windows Default Printer?

We have a web based application that generates PDF documents via Crystal Reports.
We are using Adobe Reader 8
The PDF pages are displayed within an Internet Explorer window where the the users then print the document.
The application is designed so the user only gets one chance to print the document (ie they cant come back and change printer settings if they happen to print the document out incorrectly)
The document needs to be printed on A3 paper, full duplex.
We have a printer set-up decidated to the printing of the documents generated by this application.  The default page size of this printer is set of A3.
If we set this dedicated printer as the Windows Default Printer we have no problems at all.  The default page size (A3) is picked up and the document is printed correctly.
If any other printer is set as the Windows Default Printer (eg one that has a default page size of A4), the users must obviously select the correct printer from the Print Dialogue Box -however when the user selects the dedicated A3 printer, the page size remains as A4 (page size of the Windows Default Printer).  This means the user must remember to change the paper size to A3 each time.
Out users find IT a struggle at the best of times - anything that makes the process simpler is very welcomed!
Is there a way to ensure the default page size of the printer is respected when that printer is not the Windows Default Printer?
    Thanks!

    No.

  • Transfering Music from a Ipod that was connected to windows to a macbook

is it possible to transfer music from an Ipod that was connected to a PC to my macbook? or do I have to reinstall all my music to the mac?

I had a similar problem, when a I bought my current G4 Powerbook, my iPod was synced with my iMac, so wanted to transfer all the music from iPod to the Powerbook. Basically, I used a free third party application. Download it, install then connect your iPod, it will copy everything from there to the Macbook.
See the thread link below, it lists some of the software you can use.

  • How do I get a printer that is connected to my iMac to work with a PC?

I have an Ethernet cable available. I already connected it and was able to make the Windows PC use my iMac's AirPort internet connection. I also want to set up my HP Photosmart C4280 scanner-copier-printer to work with this PC, but I can't figure it out.
Can someone please tell me what the easiest way to do this is?
    Thanks.

When you turn on printer sharing your mac becomes a print server and will advertise the printer using the bonjour protocol.
So on your pc download and install Bonjour For Windows
    Scanning is not supported however.

  • Trying to install a printer that is connected to my iMac to my pc

My Hp wireless printer is connected to my iMac via USB.  I am trying to find the printer using my PC laptop.  Both computers are networked via our router.  When searching for printers on the laptop it isn't finding the printer.

Is the printer sharing preferences enabled?

If it is not an AIrPrint enabled printer you need a third-party app.

  • When I print a Word document to a shared printer, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.

When I print a Word for Mac document to a shared printer (that is connected to my iMac) from my Macbook Pro, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.  I have tried to adjust the margins and the page setup settings but to no avail.  It used to print fine until recently.  Is there a way to fix it so that the printer prints what print preview shows?

I should add that when I e-mail this document to myself and print it directky from the iMac, it prints fine.

  • Macbook Pro w/ Lion 10.7.2 & Windows 7 Shared Printer (Lexmark X5650)

I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro with Lion OS 10.7.2 for my wife and have been trying to connect her Macbook to my Lexmark X5650 Printer that is connected to my Windows 7 Professional PC.  Tried everything with no success.  Any ideas?  I have always been a PC user and this is my first MAC and really know nothing about them.  Wife had to have it for Dental School and I am getting very frustrated
List of things I've tried thus far:
    -Installing printer using CUPS
         smb://server/Lexmark
         smb://workgroup/server/Lexmark
         smb://username:password@server/Lexmark
         smb://username:password@workgroup/server/Lexmark
where the server is I have tried using both the IP Address and Computer Name of the shared Printer
-Installing printer using "Advanced" options under "Print & Scan" to which I used the address settings as above
-Tried the LPD setting as well as just setting it straight up by selecting "Windows" under "Print & Scan", selected workgroup, computer name, and printer and everything appeared to install correctly until attempting to print test page
-Printer is shared on Windows PC
-Even tried creating an Administrative User and Password specifically for Printing
-Made sure I had the latest MAC Driver for the Printer
I have pretty much tried every setting and suggestion that can be found on google and always get the "Authentication Required" error or nothing at all printing just pauses.   When I click resume and enter in the username and password for my windows pc, it says that its sending the job, but then nothing happens and also whenever I try to print another test page after that, I have to constantly click resume and enter the username and password manually regardless of how I set it up.
Is this a printer compatibility issue, is this an issue with Mac OS 10.7.2 (Lion) w/ Windows 7 or what?  Every thread that I have read does not appear to have any responses from Apple with a workaround or any kind of explanation.  All that I have come across is that most people had no problems printing through shared Windows 7 printers until they upgrade to Mac Lion OS.

The "Authentication Required" error can be related to the print driver. Many vendors create their OS X drivers for direct communication from the Mac to the printer. As soon as you stick a Windows computer or 3rd party print server in between the Mac and the printer, then you can get this error.
The thing to note is that when you added the printer via the Add Printer > Windows pane, vs CUPS or the Advanced SMB, you would have been prompted for your Windows credentials to see the printer share after selecting the Win7 computer name. If entering these details then showed you the shared printer, this rules out the problem being related to authentication information.
Working on the premise that the error is being caused by the driver then there are other driver options for OS X, such as Gutenprint. However, looking through the supported driver list for Gutenprint v5.2.7, there is not that many Lexmark printers and certainly not the X5650. And looking at other driver packages available for OS X, I cannot see this model so you may need to look at other options.
One option is LPD which you have tried already. But I think this would have failed due to the service not running by default on Windows 7. While it is certainly present on Win7 for you to connect to a network printer using LPD, the service so that other computers can print via Win7 using LPD has to be enabled. This is done via Control Panel > Programs & Features > Turn Windows Features ON/OFF > Print & Document Services > LPD Print Service. With this enabled and running (you can check via Services) then the queue should be created in OS X using a syntax of lpd://ip_address/printer_share_name. Note that no authentication is required and if the driver will support this type of connection then it could be a quick win. But again the driver could be the issue, although I believe you will see a different error if it has an issue with this type of network connection.
So another workaround is detailed in this blog. This allows you to use the vendors driver on the Mac but I have to say that I have not tried this with Lion and Win7. My last test with this setup was with Win XP and Snow Leopard.
What may prove to be the easiest win is to purchase a Airport Express. With the printer connected to the USB port of this wireless device, the Mac can use the Lexmark driver and Win7 should have no problems printing to it either, although it would be handy to install the free Bonjour for Windows utility to help with locating the printer.
Hope this helps and please respond if you need any further information/assistance.
