Sharing problems with usb FAX/modem in lion server

Hi !
I Have a small LAN with three iMac and a mac mini running lion server (and used like a file server).
I need to send and receive a few fax each month, ad yI bought a USR5637 (it work with Lion).
It works almost perfectly with Lion but:
1) Lion server doesn't send  a mail (to the indicated adress) when a fax is arrived. Do I need to set an account in mail.app ?
2) I can send a fax only from the mac mini server. I have shared the fax printer, but in the LAN clients with installed the shared printer/FAX, it doesn't work !
I need the fax, can someone hel me ?
Thanks.
Aldo

The server system works so leave that alone.
On your client machine try this. My system sees the Zoom as 'USB Modem @ servername'
Delete the entry for your zoom modem from Printers and Scanners. It probably reads something like USB Modem @ servername.
Add your modem again. Instead of Selecting USB Modem @ servername from the list, choose Add other printer or scanner. In the Add Printer dialog box select USB Modem @ servername. Type a new name in the name box. This time use only letters numbers and dashes. Don't use spaces or special characters. It appears that the spaces or special characters is causing the error. On my computer I entered modem-servername.
If this works for you be sure to enter a defect report at apple.

  • Problem with sharing fax modem on Lion Server

I have a Zoom USB modem attached to a Mini server running Lion Server.  The fax works fine when sent from the server.  But when I send a fax to the server (as a shared fax) from my MacBook Pro, the fax shows up on the Server queue with no fax number.  Within a second the "Status" changes to "Completed".  The fax is not sent.  Any ideas?

  • Permissions / Sharing - Problem with USB Drives

    Hi,
I suspect it's possible to do what I want, but not via the "easy" route. I'm very new to OS X, so hoping there's some more advanced functionality I haven't found yet.
This is what I want to do:
I have a USB drive connected to a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. I have two users setup - one admin, one normal. I want only the local admin account to be able to access the files on the USB drive. I want the admin account to share the contents via the local network with my (Vista) laptop (which is setup with the same username / password as the admin account).
Problem I have is that whenever I try to apply any permissions to the USB drive, they are ignored. From what I've found on the internet, that is "by design" behaviour.
Are there any ways around this that people can suggest? Scripts? Other utilities? Other settings hidden away somewhere?
Beyond that, ideally I'd like to encrypt the whole drive as a TrueCrypt partition, mount the drive automatically when the laptop is detected (using a keyfile stored on the laptop), and then only let the laptop access the drive. But I'll accept a simple solution for now!
    Thanks,
    David

select the external drive in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup unlock the lock and uncheck the box to ignore ownership on this drive. permissions won't be ignored now. give your admin user read+write permissions to the drive and remove them from everybody else. that should do it.
I don't use TrueCrypt and can't comment on that.

  • Can't get usb fax modem to work

I have one of those small white apple phone/fax usb connectors, and I am trying to send a fax of a word doc but I can't get the process to work.
It reports that there is no dial tone yet it is connected correctly from the computer to my phone line.
I recall being able to do this a couple of years ago, but now I can't figure it out.
Could there be a compatibility problem with the OS?
I used it before with Tiger and now I am on Snow Leopard.
Is there some setup that I need to do before using it?
When I plug it in, it reports that there is a new network interface detected called external modem and it needs to be set up in network preferences.
In the setup, it asks for a phone number an account name and a password, but which account is it referring to? My computer, my ISP, my network router?
It then disconnects and reports that there is no dial tone and to try connecting the phone line again, but it is connected and is working.
    Thanks for any advice

    Thanks.
It does appear correctly, and everything seems ok, but it doesn't work.
I've been reading around, and apparently the apple usb fax modem doesn't work with digital phone lines.
The last time I used it, in 2007-08, we had an analogue phone line but now we have a digital line as part of the Virgin media phone, cable and broadband service.
Unless someone has had positive results getting it to connect to a digital phone line, I have to conclude, sadly, that it is now obsolete hardware.
I can't even find a comparable item on the apple store website anymore, so they must know that it doesn't work with digital phone lines and stopped selling it.

  • Apple USB Fax-modem failure

I have an Apple USB fax-modem to be used only to send and recieve faxes. The modem had worked proberly since installation several months ago.
Suddenly it returns the message "waiting for the modem to be avaible" (translated from danish) in the "External modem" print queue window. Or sometimes another message something like "preparing the message for sending...". In the Print & Fax list the modem is registered as "ready".
The modem works proberly on another computer. The computer has had a P- and NV-Ram reset and the cache files has been removed using Onyx. And the modem has been removed on the network list just to make sure, that it can't be used by another part of the system.

This solution is a "workaround" and will not affect in any problems, like I saw that they will happen after:
1.) Removing and changing "IOSerialFamily.kext" : ("The system extension '/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext' was installed improperly and cannot be used....")
2.) or go back to OS 10.5.5... (latest security-updates not included)
Go to your System-Prefs -> Printing and Faxing
    chose the Fax-Modem -> Options
1.) to receive faxes: choose "receive faxes on this computer"
2.) to send faxes: choose not to "receive faxes on this computer",
plug your modem out, wait 5 seconds and plug it in.
Now you can send faxes, but not receive,
before you choose "receive faxes on this computer" again.
To send, you have to start with 2.) again...
It's strange for a mac, but better than 10.5.5 or a corrupted system...
APPLE-STUFF: HERE AGAIN: FIX THAT FAX-PROBLEM FOR 10.5.8 QUICK PLEASE - IT'S IMPORTANT!!!

  • K7N2 deltas mainboards have a problem with usb devices ??

    Ok here is my problem..
I had installed WinXP Pro with SP1..
I got a 20 GB USB2.0 disk.i connected it on the both front or rear usb ports.
When i tried to transfer files to my usb disk or to my PC, in the middle of the copying, i got "Write Delay Failed" error and lost my usb connection..
I had to plug it out and in again..
Now, i have an DSL modem..Last night, i was disconnected from internet and my modem's lights gone..I plug it again, no lights..restarted my PC, also completely shutdown Windows XP..Again no lights..
Then, formatted PC and installed windows 2000 Pr and SP4, until now, my modem worked fine..But USB 2.0 ports are still no use for my usb disk...
In bios , it's enabled as USB 1.1+2.0..
I think this K7N2 deltas have a problem with usb 2.0 devices and Win XP Pro..
Some guys talking about, removing 9th wire earth, but couldn't understand which wire from where ? From mainboard or from usd device's cable ?
Those cables are fabricated, i think it's impossible ?
My processor is Athlon 2500+, ram Twinmos 512 DDR 400
    Thanks for reply

I'm also having this problem. It's happening with my USB flash disk. I was almost buying another one when I tried it with Windows Vista on the same machine and it worked ok, then I tried Arch Linux (with kernel 2.6.30.5) on another machine and got the same error. After that I tried Ubuntu and it worked ok. Seems that Arch's kernel doesn't like my USB flash disk.

  • Canon 860 Series (Pixma) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips

After spending several hours sorting out Canon Pixma OSX problems here are my thoughts:
Canon 860 Series (Pixma 868) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips
    Problem:
    - New imac and MacBook Pro 2012 (OSX 10.8.2) had a problem using Canon Pixma 868 printer on network and would not scan or print using Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print), which has advanced scanning and photo printing functions.
    - When I connected the canon printer to my imac, OSX 10.8.2 automatically downloaded and installed drivers for Canon 860 series printer. I could then add the new printer (select ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”) and printer would work while connected via USB but could not get to print or scan over network wifi.
    - The original Canon 860 Series CD does not work with 10.8 and the manual / online instructions did not make sense (as based on CD install).
    Solution:
    1) Install Canon Printer Drivers and Software (from official Canon site)
Go to canon support site, review FAQ, then download and install following Pixma 860 Series software & drivers for OSX 10.8 (links see below). The version I downloaded is in brackets but check for updated version. Full instructions are below.
Canon 860 Series Drivers & Software  for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion:
The base software and drivers needed for using Canon 860 Series on Mac OS X 10.8 (USB) are
    1 Printer Driver
(Canon MX860 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0 (03-Aug-2012))
    2 Scanner Driver
(Canon MX860 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.11.4a (03-Aug-2012))
    3 Network Tool
(Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac (27-Dec-2012)
Canon Software for using advanced printing and scanning functions (while connected to network)
    4 Solution Menu
    (Canon Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.1 (27-Jul-2012 ))
    5 MP Navigator EX
(Canon MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 (02-Auf-2012))
    6 Easy-PhotoPrint EX
    (Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 4.1.6 (21-Jan-2013 ))
Canon Support (HK) – check your local site
    http://www.canon.com.hk/en/download/main/index.do
Select Product and drivers from support site eg http://support-hk.canon-asia.com/
    1. Choose a product category
    Multifunctional Printers
    2. Choose a product series
      Pixma
    3. Choose a product model
      Pixma MX868
    4. Choose type of document
    Downloads or FAQ
If you have problems installing the software under 10.8, see the FAQ on Canon site. You will need to allow software installs from “unidentified developers by using “Control” Key or by changing your system preferences)
    2) Check Canon Printer and Software Working while connected via USB
Once you have downloaded and installed drivers and software and restarted computer, check that the printer and Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print) are working via USB.  Open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App) and make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it shows the correct SSID Wifi settings (under the Canon IJ Network Tool App ‘Setup menu’).  This is normally done as part of the automatic install but worth double checking
    3) Add new network printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”).
After you have checked USB printing turn off printer, unplug the USB cable and shutdown the Canon IJ Network Tool App.
Then turn the printer back on and wait 30s. Then add a new printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”). Once you select “+” (add new printer), wait 10-30s for the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer to appear in the new window eg Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) (Kind: “Canon IJ Network”)
DO NOT ADD THE MX 860 SERIES BONJOUR SCANNER (the Bonjour Scanner is the built-in software, is not needed and often appears first on the add printer list).  The Canon scanner can be accessed used through the MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 software (which has much better functions)
You will now have two Printer Canon MX860 (USB) and Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network). Set the Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network) as default and test print and scan
If the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer does not appear, check the printer and make sure that the printer can see the wifi network. On the printer select Menu / Settings / Device Settings / Lan Settings / WLAN Setting List.  It should say WLAN Active, identify the SSID and have an IP address
If the printer can not see the Wifi Network, plug the USB cable back in, then open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App). Make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it has your SSID settings (under setup), if it has this info, restart the computer and the printer and try again

Hi, thaks for response, meant to post as a discussion (not question), wanted to save others time if they get the same problem

  • File sharing problems with my Media Player, an A C Ryan

I have a media player, an A C Ryan, hooked up to my wifi at home and it normally accesses all my hard disks that is plugged and shared on my iMac. I had no problems when the iMac was on Snow Leopard. Under Network/Workgroup in the AC Ryan's menu, I can see and access all the files on the hard disks.
The moment I upgraded to Lion, all such access was lost. The AC Ryan cannot connect to the hard disks any more via the wifi network. it's as though file sharing has stopped completely. I checked the file sharing settings on the iMac and nothing has changed i.e. the disks were shared as usual. After struggling with many possible solutions and failing (I checked out a lot of forums), I reintalled Snow Leopard and the problems were immediately solved.
Is there something seriously wrong with Lion's file-sharing? Has this been fixed in 10.7.2? My friend who has a similar setup (his media player is the WD Live) has exactly the same file sharing problem with Lion.
I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I believe that NTFS-3G has issues with Lion.
I use Paragon NTFS and have had no issues at all. I am pretty sure that NTFS-3G will get updated, but you need to check their site to find out when.

  • Apple USB Fax Modem

    To whom it shall concern:
I have to say that I recently purchased the Apple USB Fax Modem from an unsuspecting Apple Store, and plugged it into an iMac running Leopard. The Fax Modem worked in the absence of any appreciable problems, pronouncing full functionality most auspiciously!
I had to install zero drivers, nor effectuate the appointment of any difficult configuration.
The only "issue" that one might wish to be cognizant of that I experienced, turned out to be an ID10T error. I entered the entirety of the fax number into the "dialing prefix" box below the entry to key in the intended recipients name, not realizing MacOS was attempting to draw the number from an Address Book entry, in the instant case, absent from the Address Book.
Remediation of the issue dictated that I enter the name and fax number into Address Book, and then subsequently attempted to reassert the transmission of my telecopy, only to then experience 100% success!
This product truly seems to exude excellence in design and function in terms categorically not uncertain.
    Stuart

Just a thought, isn't it the _fax capability_ in system prefs that you are praising and not specifically the Apple Modem itself?
I do agree though, faxing works like a charm once you figure out how to do it.

  • Satellite M70-190 - problem with USB

    Hi!
After uninstall Windows XP and BIOS update, i have a problem with USB ports. My USB flash drive does't work. Windows find it as USB flash drive, but i can't find it in "My computer"
So have anyone idea about this problem?
PS External HDD works perfect, as USB mouse, and USB WiMax modem.
Im hoping someone out there can help with this problem.

Is described issue the same on all USB ports?
I mean, I have Satellite M70-159 in front of me and since long time I use 8GB SanDisc and 2GB Toshiba USB stick and both devices are recognized properly.
I still use original Toshiba WXP installation (updated of course).

  • Controlling a USB Fax modem

Is it possible to control the speed at which the Apple USB Fax modem runs? I have just set up my new iMac to receive faxes and sometimes I receive only part of the page. I am using PageSender software which previously worked very well for me. The problem I now have is similar to a problem I had years ago running FAXStf Pro. I solved the problem by turning down the receive speed. There does not seem to be any similar way to adjust the speed at which the modem operates.

PageSender has sent me a new initialization string which is supposed to force my modem to run at 9600 baud when receiving a fax.

    Hello,
you sould try to press F12 when the Toshiba screen appears! Then a small boot menu is shown. Choose USB-FDD and then it should work.

  • Problems with connection to the Mountain Lion

Someone is having problems with connection on Mac Mountain Lion? I did a clean install and the connection is unstable.

Have you tried to reset your network settings ?
What I would do is delete the connection, and then retry the set up of that connection.
System Preferences>Network, select Wi-Fi on the left and then click on the 'minus' button
