Sharing projects with an FCP user

I'm editing a bunch of game videos with another team parent. She's been using FCP, but is a newbie to that program. She's done a lot of editing on her material. She is using a single DV camera, has done done relatively simple editing (transitions, speed change, titles). I'm using FCE, and want to import her files and finish editing on my computer with my HDV and DV footage.
I read in a previous post something about exporting as XML. Can anyone provide more input on that?
Would it make sense for her to export as a self contained quicktime, and edit from that (realizing I can un-edit things like composites, text, etc.)?
I assume I could grab her capture files and at least not have to re capture, but maybe that isnt' even a lot of help.
any adivce would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chuck

I assume the XML contains the editing commands but not the media. When she first started doing this, she had just gotten FCP and didn't understand the need for naming files. So apparently a number of her videos reference "untitled" in folder "untitiled" and a scattered hither and yon on her hard disk. I was thinking that it would be worthwhile to go to a project, select a clip, reveal in finder, rename, and reconnect.
My plan is to go to her place with an empty 250GB hard drive and copy all the necessary files to that, then come home and go from there.

  • Sharing a project with multiple RH7 users

We have a project that "we" shared by remoting into a server
that had one image of RH 5.
We've got multiple RH7 licenses (multiple installs on
separate machines). We cannot get into the same project. In fact, I
cannot even open a project and import that one.
It was decided NOT to purchase the RH Sever with RH 7 because
VSS would do the versioning for us.
We haven't set up VSS yet, so we aren't creating individual
images of the project files (which is how it worked in RH 5, with
inline versioning). I'm surprised that we cannot individually open
a project (even without others using it), nor can I even IMPORT the
files from that project to a new project. What am I missing?
The error is "Open project was cancelled or the application
was unable to load dabase for ....<fully qualified path to a
    .cpd file>
I've read numerous KB articles and have deleted, renamed,
compressed the .cpd file to no avail. I've tried opening the .hhp
file (which recreates a .cpd file).
Nonetheless, how are multiple users supposedto share in
editing project files. If each of us must have separate images of
the same topics...how do I "replicate" this in the testing phase
(we're in the process of setting up a shared/versioning system, but
don't have it yet. The only way we can get to the common project is
to remote in to the hard drive and work from the local install of
    RH7.

Hi annonnyma and welcome to our community
We have never been able to have multiple users simultaneously
accessing the same project by simply placing it on a server. The
way it works with a source control system is by having it stored
centrally on the server. Then the source control system handles
checking in and checking out by maintaining a "Working folder" on
your LOCAL hard drive. The end result is that each help author
actually has a full copy of the help system source files on the
server. As they work on different bits, they are actually working
locally off their C drive. At no point do you ever directly access
and edit the files on the server. The source control system handles
    copying them back and forth.
RoboHelp Server should not be needed for source control if
    you are using VSS.
So copy the project locally, then possibly rebuild the .CPD
and you should be good to go.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Sharing files with other mac users on iCloud

May I share files I store on iCloud with other users?

If you want to try online sharing you might like to look at SugarSync:
    https://www.sugarsync.com/products/sync_sharing.html
    - this page says:
    Collaborate with shared folders
SugarSync keeps all your shared files up-to-date and in sync for powerful collaboration with your virtual team. With folder sharing, you can collaborate on projects by giving a person, or a group of people, access to a shared folder on your computer. No more wasting time emailing individual files and tracking the latest versions. Just send an email invitation to your clients, coworkers, or family members to join your folder.
Sync folders of information across teams
Folder members can sync a shared folder directly to their own computers. Any member of a shared folder can have their own copy of the folder on their own computer. Folder members can edit files locally. Updates are reflected for everyone as soon as the file is saved.
I've not tried this so you would need to investigate to see whether it suited your requirements.
There is also a new program, Cloud App, which makes sharing files simple: it runs as a background process and you just drag files to the menu bar icon. Storage is with Heroku and Amazon: it's free with a limit of 10 files per day, maximum 25MB per file, $45 per year for unlimited files, maximum 250MB per file.
Another possible option is YouSendIt. It provides the facility for you to upload files and send an email to a recipient telling them how to download it: and it's also possible with all but the free plan for others to upload a file for you. The free version allows you to send a maximum file size of 50MB with no upload by others: $9.99 per month gets you 2GB sized files in either direction, and there are upgraded plans.

  • Collaborating on a project with a PC User

I have been messing around with FCE and FCP for about three years doing my own little thing. A professional in my area wants to work with me on a school project. He is running Vegas which I believe is a Sony product.
Is it possible for us to swap files back and forth?
Also, I sent him an QuickTime movie that I exported a .avi. He was able to use that, I'm assuming if he sends me a .avi file I will be able to use it. Is that true?
My friend sent me a .wmv file, and I could only use it with Media Player. Is there someway I can import that into FCP 5.
    I'm using FCP 5.0.2
    QuickTime 7.0.2
    Regards,
    Hank

Since he's a professional, he should be able to use as well as send you Quicktime files (mov).
It would be more than perverse if all he can work in is Window's consumer format.
    good luck.

Can I allow a different logged in user to gain access to my music library on the same computer? If so...How the heck do you do it? I tried something once and thought I lost my whole library!

  • Sharing playlists with specific spotify users (neither public nor collaboration)

Hello. Hope someone can help me with this. I do not want my friends to sign up to Facebook. They have spotify.
I do not want my playlists to be public. I want specific friends (who have spotify user accounts) to access my playlist because I allow them. I do not want them to "collaborate" and add to it.
What are the steps to do this? Why is the UX so arcane inside spotify? Much appreciate any pointer. Thank you.

Currently, the only thing you can do is share your private playlist.
You have the ability to send it to individual people to view or you can post to your followers.

  • Sharing slideshows with non Apple users

Can anyone suggest the best way to share slideshows with non Apple family and friends?

Are you asking about the file format for non-Apple PC's or the best way to physically share the slideshow file or are you asking about sharing with people that don;t have a computer at all?
Once you create the slide show in Aperture you will need to export it. You can  pick a number of formats and uses during export. The easiest way would be to export for YouTube. Once the export is finished you can upload the file to YouTube and give all your friends and family the URL to play it.
If you want to deliver a file depending on the software they have on the PC you could use the .mov file format. This requires Quick Time to play it but there is a free Quick Time player for windows available from Apple.
If you want to create a DVD to play on a standard DVD player you will need to get a hold of DVD aurhoring  software. Apple use to include the software with iLife but stopped doing that a while back. If you're looking to make a video DVD post back.

how do i share a iCal with another MAC user

You need to be an iCloud subscriber and keep your calendar under iCloud, not 'On My Mac'. Then you can share it privately to other iCloud subscribers (editable or read-only at your choice) or publicly (read-only) to anyone with a CalDAV client - such as iCal or Google Calendar.

  • Shared Project Workflow Problem: Hitting a Wall with Markers

    Hi there,
Apologies in advance for the long note.  We're using Adobe CC to edit and finish commercials and are having a significant issue regarding shared project workflow.  First, some context:
We often edit projects remotely.  When this happens, assistants and other editors who remain in LA will have access to the media on our SAN while the editor and assistant traveling out of town will have their own copy of the media.  I know Adobe Anywhere would solve any issue relating to two identical sets of media in use in different cities, but we're a small shop and the hardware and software expense don't make sense for us at this time.  Please do not respond to anything mentioned from here on by stating we should just get Adobe Anywhere.  Thanks.
What will regularly happen is that the remote editor and assistant will need work done on the project here in LA while they're in session with the clients.  Sometimes this work involves marking up clips with comment markers so the editor can more easily locate a specific moment.  Here's where the problem arises.
Unlike FCP and Avid, Premiere handles markers within the clip's metadata.  So, if I have two separate projects linking to separate but identical instances of media, one of those media instances gets updated with new markers, there is currently no way to get those markers to the other project without also shuttling the new marked-up media.  This is not possible when a remote editor needs dailies marked up in a couple hours and is working across the country or abroad.
But let's assume for the sake of argument that it is possible and we apply this workflow.  Let's also assume that in the time it takes the local assistant to mark up the clips for the remote editor, the editor has added a couple markers of his own, which is reasonable and happens all the time.  Now when the editor links to the newly marked up clips he's received via shipment, he'll wipe out all the markers he's made on his own since giving the order to mark up the footage.  That is a significant inconvenience, especially with clients in the room asking stuff like "can we look at the take where the guy says 'good' instead of 'great'?"
So what happens if we just have repeating sets of media, so that every time the clips markers get updated, the editor actually imports those clips, even though the picture and audio data in those clips is completely redundant to what's already in the project.  The issues with this are, as I can see it, 1) increasing the amount complexity within the project so that you'd have to scan many bins of dailies to look for a single marker, 2) increasing by orders of magnitude the amount of storage space needed, 3) even if problems 1 and 2 are handled, if you have to go to finish with multiple versions of a cut, and those versions reference separate instances of the same clip from different bins, Premiere's dupe frame detection will not work and you'll need to spend a lot of extra time locating duplicate clips manually before sending your EDL or XML off to final color grading.
At this point, I think it's necessary to interject something:  we're talking about markers here.  Why is this such a problem?  FCP and Avid have no such issues simply by making markers - even clip markers - part of the project metadata.  From what I understand, Adobe has chosen to do things differently because of dynamic link, so that After Effects and Prelude, for example, could add markers to a clip and those markers would ripple across all instances of that clip in the different applications.  It's a great feature which we take advantage of here from time to time.
    So what's the solution?
My workaround in CS6, which does not solve the issue of needing to merge clip markers so that an editor's markers and an assistant's markers can be applied to a single piece of media, was to turn off "write XMP ID to Files on Import."  This would generate an XMP sidecar file which could be easily passed along with a project file to the remote editor, who could then overwrite his local XMP sidecars with the new ones containing the new marker info.
However, in Premiere CC that is no longer possible.  It appears that if Premiere CC can access the XMP ID on a file, it will not generate a sidecar regardless of what you have set in your media preferences.  We use ProRes Proxy as our dailies format (again, please no comments on this, it is not up for debate at this time) and Premiere can get to the XMP ID within the files and will not, no matter what it seems, generate an XMP sidecar.
We could change the company workflow to use DNxHD 36 instead of ProRes Proxy, which would give us XMP sidecars, but that would not solve the issue of needing to merge marker lists between projects non-destructively.
The best solution I can think of would be to have a script or some kind or built-in feature which would allow for the batch export, import and merging of marker lists.  This way Adobe could keep its current clip-metadata-based marker workflow while giving professional users needing more flexible marker behavior the ability to have assistants non-destructively modify clip markers without necessitating the creation of extra media or project complexity.
I would really love some input on this and ideas from the pro community out there who has experience with shared project workflows - especially projects being shared remotely.  There's not a lot of info out there about this and it would be great to hear what others are doing.
Thanks a million for sticking with this, if you've made it this far.
    Best,
    Jon

    Thanks Jim,
I understand that Adobe Anywhere solves this, but there should be this fairly basic functionality (which exists in Avid and FCP) in a non-enterprise edition of the software.  I have submitted a couple different feature requests about this, going back to CS5, so hopefully enough people make similar requests for a fix to be implemented.  Adobe Anywhere is really not a solution for our small shop as currently configured/priced, especially when we can have editors working remotely with very affordable USB 3 drives.  The only hangup is the markers, which just isn't worth a 5 figure fix.  As such it's hard to consider the problem solved for either us or any small shop or post crew.
    Best,
    Jon

  • Two users sharing project, not seeing updates

Using RH8 with RSC3.1 and XP.
Recently I added a project in RSC3 using the Windows Credentials for the user logins, as had been suggested in response to another posting I made on this forum.  The logon part seems to be working fine.
The day I re-added the project to RSC on the first and second users PC's, the topic count for the second user was less than the first users total (per the total displayed at the top of the Topic Properties report.
So I removed the connection in RSC for the second user, copied the first users project to the second users PC and added a connection to the project in RSC.  At that point they both had the same topic count.
The first user has done some work on the project, and the changes are not being added to the second user's list of topics when she responds to the GET LATEST VERSION dialog when she opens the project.
Is there a setting or a cause for this that makes sense?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Joe

Still using Win XP with RH8.0 and RSC 3.1
There was a new project the second writer had created since my last posting, and needed to share with the other writer.  Seemed like a good opportunity for a fresh start to test this problem, with a smaller number of topics to deal with.
Below is what i did. Results about the same.
UPDATE: While I was writing this posting we discovered something that may be the whole problem.  Skip to #4 in the ON THE SECOND WRITERS MACHINE list to see that info.  I didn't want to remove the following in case it helps.
    On the server:
    1. I created a database for the new project.
    2. I created accounts for both writers with the "Use Windows Login" option.
    On the original writers machine:
    1. Using RSC I created a connection to the database.
    4. On the original writers machine I added the project to the database.
    ON THE SECOND WRITERS MACHINE:
    1. using RSC I created a connection to the database.
    2. I created a folder for the project.
    3. Using RSC I selected all the file / folders in the project and did a get, directing the files to the folder created in step 2.
    4. When the project was opened there were about a dozen topics listed as broken links.  They could not be restored.
    5. I removed the connection, and the project, and came back to finish this posting.
DISCOVERY:  The original writer dug around and realized that all of the topics involved in the broken links list were within folders, in the topic list within the project.   We used the History View option in RSC to copy the HTML back into replacement topics in the project, but put them in the main list, NOT in folders.  At that point....
Again On the second writers machine:
    1. In RSC, I added a connection and a project folder.
    2. Then did a Get to the new folder.
    3. Ran the project and all the recreated topics were there.
BOTTOM LINE:  It appears the problem is the folders.   The original project I encountered this problem with has many folders, and had many broken links when we tried to add it for the second writer.   We have to have the second writer involved with it.
These two writers have projects that end up with many, many topics.  They use the folders to organize them.    I don't use that approach, I prepend a name or function to related topics to group them so I can locate them easily.   Then I deal with removing the prefix from the name in the TOC. Either way is not really pretty.
I thought folders were virtual, and transparent to the project, but perhaps that is just for images?  It doesn't seem RH should let you create folders if they create obstacles in sharing the project.
Is there a way to use folders to organize topics and not have this happen when the second writer GETS the project?
Again, any information you provide is greatly appreciated.  This has been a huge headache, but at least we seem to have figured out why it is happening, and can move forward.
    Regards,
    Joe

  • Sharing an iMovie with another Mac user
