Sharing Purchased Music

I have to say Apple has really disappointed me in their decision to not allow music store purchases to be shared among a local network.
I work in a post-production facility where we are constantly auditioning music for commercial spots. I will quite often look at the shared libraries of my fellow editors to find inspiration. The only problem is that I have no way to listen to the majority of their libraries in a shared setting due to the limitations imposed on the music purchased from the iTunes store. What good is a music sharing option if you have to ask the owner of the music for an account password in order to hear it?
I can deal with limitations based on how many computers my music physically exists on (the limit is five), but why on earth can I not enjoy a library that exists ephemerally in my iTunes until the owner shuts down his computer or turns off sharing?
I have to say that this is a big blow to my enjoyment of the iTunes line of products, as well as a disappointment to my coworkers who would like to be able to share their ideas in an elegant and efficient manner.
From now on I will be buying my music the old-fashioned way. I thought I found a better system with iTunes, but I not only want to buy music I enjoy, I also want to share it with others.

I am concerned with the ability to use the sharing feature at all,
Again, the record companies force Apple to restrict how many users can share a given track (there are restrictions on network sharing even for tracks you import from a CD), and that there be an authentication mechanism in place for tracks purchased from the iTunes Music Store. We're probably lucky they allow it at all; the record companies would be within their rights to force Apple not to allow any sharing through iTunes of any sort.
And yes, it is rather illogical that you have fewer restrictions when purchasing a CD than when purchasing via a download. But the music industry is often illogical. And as I said before, more and more CDs are appearing with copy protection that will limit or even completely prevent the content from being shared. So the less restrictive use when buying CDs may be coming to an end.
In any case, the bottom line is that Apple has no say in the matter. If they want to be able to resell tracks, they have to implement whatever protections the record companies require. And again, it's the same way with all the legal download stores carrying content from those record companies.
So if you wish to complain to someone, complain to the record companies. But don't expect them to loosen restrictions; they're on the road to much tighter restrictions, not more lenient.
'Nuff said.

Please guide me in sharing purchased music from my account to another ipod

You have posted in the itunes u forum.
Itunes U is where colleges, universities, and museums post educational content for students.
Your question seems to have nothing to do with itunes U.
What do you mean "sharing purchased music from my account to another ipod"?
Do you mean you are trying to sync to your ipod?  If, so just sync it.
If you mean that you are trying to give music to others, then this is not legal.

  • Itunes Sharing Purchased Music DRM

We have sharing on in our office and we can't listen to some songs on library's because they need the users itunes password. How do we remove the DRM or upgrade music that was bought from the itunes store when they had DRM?

Please note that the terms of sale for the iTunes Store say that all purchases are for personal use only. Sharing in a commercial setting is not personal use and so is not allowed, and such use generally would require specific licenses from the copyright owners for use of their music in a commercial setting, even if you were playing CDs. The RIAA and artist's rights associations hire people to visit businesses looking for unlicensed use, so be warned.
    Regards.

  • Deleted Shared/Purchased Music Playlist

Like an idiot, I deleted my "Purchased/Shared Music Folder." I tried to reinstall iTunes to see if they would come back, but that plan proved unsucessful. Any help would be appreciated to get these playlists back....

Hakubi, I would suggest you start your own thread fully explaining what your issue is, instead of just saying "my gthing is checked, & it still doen't appear." You have posten in a thread that is a month old & if I hadn't had my e-mail subscription turned on, I would neve have know about your post. It's also more courteous not to disrupt the original poster's thread with what may be a similar but unrelated topic. Thanks!

  • Can we share non-purchased music?

I have painstakingly downloaded and categorized hundreds of our CD's in iTunes.  I have always used an iPod, iPhone, Mac, iPad, etc.  Now my husband has a brand new iPhone and he, too, would like to listen to our music.  However everything I see about "Family Sharing" is about sharing purchased music.  Can we share non-purchased music?

    Two Hound Train,
There are 5 ways to share music in a household.
    Regular iTunes Sharing
    Home Sharing
    Family Sharing
Give the person copies of the song files to add to their library
Put all song files on a shared server (NAS)
For non-purchased music, any of these will work except Family Sharing.

  • Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Why is this setup now blocked by Apple? Cannot download purchased music.

Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Each of us is using an own individual iPhone, which we frequently update with our iTunes Accounts. We have had this setup for years. It was convenient, reliable and user friendly, since we both could download what we wanted, create playlists, etc. without impact on the other. Exactly this convenience has made me and my wife real Apple fans, so that we also wanted to convince our daughter to move from Android and PC to our easier Apple setup.
Since a few weeks, this setup does not work anymore. From Apple Support (online chat on Apple.at) I was not told that this is not supported any more. Every computer is only allowed to be connected to one iTunes account. From one perspective (sharing music across other users as an act or media piracy, etc.) I can somehow understand this. However, since we are using different user accounts on this computer, I do not have access to other user´s iTunes media and could not play, download or copy it. So what is the point in this?
This now means, that my wife and I are only allowed to download individually purchased music with our personal iTunes accounts only with an interval of 90 days, so every on of us 2 times a year!
Was I incorrectly informed by the Apple support? If so, how can I solve the problem? Or is this really a new policy by Apple? If so, what is the reason? Am I expected to purchase a Mac for my wife, my daughter, myslef and for the three smaller kids to follow soon?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes.

Hi. I have shared an Apple ID with my children for some time.  As they are getting older they do not wnat me seeing all their messages, photos etc so want their own accounts.  How can they access their purchased music and apps on the new account please?

    Yes.
On their iOS devices, under Settings>iTunes & App Store, they should use your Apple ID. When they log into iCloud, iMessage and Facetime, they should use their personal Apple IDs.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library to a new computer?  I have transferred purchased music but wish to transfer the rest of my library.  Home sharing isn't responding and the computers are going to be in different locations.

How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one?  I have successfully transferred purchased music but not my library of CDs.  Home sharing will not work, and isn't working in fact, as the computers will be in different countries.

Assuming your library is in the default location and all of the media is stored within the library's media folder then this is what you need to do:
Copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target computer.
You can do this directly over a network (making use of shared network folders) or by making a copy on an external drive, moving the drive between computers, and copying again. Any way that works is good. However if you say that you cannot use Home Sharing (doesn't work properly anyway) because the source and target are not on the same network then method 2 as I describe it won't work either.
Your playlists, play counts, ratings etc. are stored inside the database iTunes Library.itl which is inside the iTunes folder and a successful migration includes all of this information, not just the media files. I recommend method 1 from the earlier link as it sets you up with a backup mechanism to use in future. All hard drives fail eventually and often without warning, or at least a warning that is noticed and then heeded.
If the initial assumption is wrong, or you need help checking, just ask.

  • Hi, I have just got an ipod touch, I had an ipod classic for years, I have tried to put my itunes onto my ipod touch but only my purchased music is going onto it, how do I get my library onto it without using sharing?

Hi I have just got an ipod touch, I have had a classic for years with no trouble.  I have tried to download my itunes library to my touch but only my purchased music transfers.  How do I transfer all my music without the home sharing as this at the moment seems to be the only way to see all of my library?

You can set up more than one device on your computer, and iTunes will remember the settings for each of them:
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer
But you'll have to use your Apple ID to sync bought media to her device. Disable all other things you don't want to sync like photos, contacts, etc.

  • Home sharing on the apple TV only shows itunes purchased music, not my whole music library.

Home sharing on the apple TV only shows itunes purchased music, not my whole music library. I can not find any settings to fix this issue.
How do I get home sharing to see the entire library?

AppleTV 2 and 3's main icon Music section is a shambles.
There should be a Music store as there was on AppleTV1. Crazy you can't access Purchases unless subscribed to itunes Match.
As Winston says you are probably not looking in the correct place for local streaming of your music library.

  • Cannot transwer new purchased music to ipod on new computer

We have a new computer that we cannot sync our new music purchased today to our ipod. We installed and syncd itunes 2 months ago when we got the computer, but I think this is the first time we have tried to purchase items on it. I say 'we' as this is my mom and dads issue.
They originally shared an apple ID. Apple ID 1 was linked to the ipod. Then they needed their own IDs so apple ID2 was created and the IPod was synced to it as that is the account inwhich new content would be purchased. Apple ID1 stayed the same. The new music we bought was on AppleID2. All music shows in previously purchased. It also shows under library/music. We cannot get the newly purchased music onto the IPod. We hit sync and it does not update the new music. I can not drag and drop it on the ipod or in the playlist which it is intended for. I deleted the music and downloaded it again and its still the same issue. i signed on to apple ID1 and still could not move the content on to the ipod.

I do not know what Itunes they are using but I assume its up to date on a 2 month old computer that didnt ask to be update upon load up.
Any help would be appreciated. Any questions feel free to ask.

  • Several computers sharing the music library stored on a network disk: howto

    Hi,
We currently have iTunes set up on a (laptop) computer. The music folder location is on a network disk (NAS). Everything has been working fine.
We recently purchased two more laptops for other family members and would like to set up the iTunes for those computers to use the same existing music folder. Is this possible? I understand that we must authorize all computers using the library to be able to play purchased music.
So far we have synced all our ipods using the one and only computer. In the future each of us will use their own laptop for syncing. Will this cause any problems regarding to the shared music library?
I guess that the playlists are stored in the itunes files, not in the music library. Due to this the playlists must be created on the new computers after the itunes installation.
    Best regards,
    ikl

You are most of the way there. The only issue will be that anything done by one machine will not be automatically updated to others. Files deleted from NAS by one machine will not be available to others anymore leading to ! next to track names if in libraries on other machines.
Files added by one machine will have to be added to the libraries of the other machines using 'add file to library' or 'add folder to library' options on menu.
Podcast subscriptions should be only files that will duplicate on NAS. Podcast subscriptions are individual to each library even if stored to same location. The files themselves well get numbered. The library will know which file to use. This allows episodes to be deleted without affecting other users.
