Sharing Quicken Files Over a Mac and PC Network

I've been sharing Quicken files over a PC network for years without any problems.
Now that I have a Mac, I want to move Quicken to the iMac, but still be able to access and update the files using a PC.
I know that Quicken for the PC and Quicken for the Mac are 2 different programs and the data files are incompatible. I do have VMWare Fusion, but have yet to install it.
If I run Quicken 2007 (PC Version) on the Mac using Fusion, can I also access the files using a separate PC? If so, what do I need to do to set this up?
The PC is running XP Pro. I've got a wireless home network and will probably install XP home edition on the Mac, though I have not fully decided on the Windows OS I'm going to install.
Thanks in advance.

No offense, but you are not being helpful.
I have tried the Quicken forums with no help. I have also tried searching this forum and have not been able to find the answer I need.
From what it sounds like, you don't know the answer either. But somebody else might and I would appreciate it if you didn't discourage others from answering.

  • Quicken files share between mac and PC?

I know this is really not the forum for this but someone may be able to give me this answer.
Client has a PC and Mac at home wants to share the Quicken file between the two computers.
Will Intuit allow Quicken to be open on both PC and Mac?
I am thinking the answer is no

    Jeffrey,
    The short answer is No.
The long answer is No. Quicken data files are not meant to be transferred between Quicken for Microsoft Windows and Quicken for Mac. Currently, there is not an available converter tool. There is a manual process available to accommodate the infrequent switch from one operating system to another; Intuit does not recommend performing this process on a regular basis. It is important to note that not all data will convert seamlessly. There is potential for duplication or loss of data due to major differences inherent to the operating system or version you are switching to.;~)

  • File transfer between mac and windows 7

Is it possible to transfer files between my Mac and a windows 7 machine via bluetooth?
    MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.4
    Thanks

It will be slow, but there's no reason it shouldn't work as long as the Bluetooth hardware on both computers has the File Transfer Profile (all Macs do), and *Bluetooth Sharing* is checked in the Sharing system preferences pane on the Mac.
If the computers are close enough to send files via Bluetooth, you'd be much better off just networking them together. You can then "mount" the PC hard disk on the Mac like any other disk and move files around easily. It will be hundreds of times faster too.

    Mac/Windows Networking in Leopard
The following articles outline how to set up networking between Macs using Leopard and Windows PCs:
Setting up a Windows computer to share files with Mac users
Setting up a Mac computer to share files with Windows users
    Sharing with Windows computers
If you can’t connect to your Mac from a Windows computer
Sharing your computer with others on your network
More information is also available by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching for the relevant terms such as "windows", "networking", "sharing", etc.

Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    <u>General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck

Try forcing iPhoto to load the Library on the External Hard drive by launching it while holding down the Option key. Choose the Library on the External HD, and quit iPhoto, see if iMovie can see the Library with the iPhoto Videos contained inside.

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

I had made a copy of the main revel file on my mac, and then i put it in my google drive folder for safety. I accidentally deleted one of the two libraries form my iPhone. I opened it up and panicked and thankfully I guess I had a backup of the other library in my spouses phone... but mine is still gone. I don't have them saved to my computer... the pictures are important and I really really need them back.  Is there a way for me to get the pictures back from what I believed at the time was a smart way to backup when i made a duplicate of that main mac file to my google drive? The best way to let me know is my email... [email protected]  I am really relying on you guys if there is a way?

  • Is there a way to Move files to the iCloud thus freeing up disk space on my Mac? Or does iCloud only sync (replicate) files between my Mac and the cloud?

Is there a way to Move files to the iCloud thus freeing up disk space on my Mac? Or does iCloud only sync (replicate) files between my Mac and the cloud? I want to free up disk space on my Mac and assumed that the icloud would be a good way to do this, but having 'moved' 70Gb of files to the iCloud drive (I've upgraded to 200Gb storage) my Mac is still nearly full and I've realised that it seems to just Sync files just like dropbox.

So, the big question is did the Apple guys confirm that this is how the new iCloud drive should be working?  I'm guessing, from your response, that this is indeed the case.  Are they going to fix this anytime soon?  I thought that this was a new function of the iCloud drive in Yosemite.
I just want an online storage facility to back up my photo & music collections.  I did look at Dropbox as they have a good deal going with their Dropbox Pro, however this is still just a sync service where the Master files reside on your local disk drive - although I have read that there may be a way to work around this.  Still not ideal.

  • I try to generate a chm file over the net and I get a compiling error message

    Hi all,
I am trying to generate chm files over the net, and the same project when I am generating the same chm locally works fine, however when I am attempting to generate the same chm on a network location, it gives me a compiling error and aborts the generation. It is also keeping the chm file open afterwards, so I have to reboot the machine.
It is RH7 working on a Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
    Thank you

It is not a project issue. RoboHelp is just not designed to work that way but like a lot of things, some people can use them outside what they were designed for. However, just because some people can work that way, it does not follow everyone can.
I've seen people with projects on a network and they say have been doing it for years so it must be OK. A while later they come back and say the problem is fixed since moving it locally.
Sorry but it looks like you are stuck with working the way you do or getting your colleague to do it. It might be as simple as he is on a different bit of your network.

My mac now says I have 440 gigs of other that is used. But does not make sense, do I have a virus?

Since you have not identified the OS your MBP is using, these extract may or may not assist you.

You may also download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it it will show all of the files on your MBP and the respective sizes.

  • .exe files appearing on MAC in mixed network environment

I am working in a mixed PC/Mac network environment. Soon after plugging the MAC into the network, I started noticing '.exe' file appearing on my MAC.
Almost every folder on the HD now has a .exe file with the same name inside it. For example the Libray folder has a file called "Library.exe" in it now.
I have one folder on the MAC shared, and mapped as a network drive on a PC. The PC's anti-virus software keeps flagging a virus on the folder. However, I am running Intego's anti-virus on the MAC and it does not find anything.
    Anyone have any ideas here?

Finally figured it out... PC Network volume (shared folder) had the W32.rontokbro@mm virus. EXE file appeared anytime the PC connected to the MAC. Reformatted the PC and deleted all of the EXE files from the MAC and now I have no troubles.

  • Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0

Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0  we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.
What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.
This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.
On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.
Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.
    Thanks.
    Andre Tenenbaum

I too am having this exact problem as well as a few of my network administrator contacts that have gone through the Mavericks / Server 3 upgrade.
It may be worth noting that before the upgrade I had run a mac mini server (core 2 duo) that never had any unintentional downtime, and the current mac server had never gone down or lost connection so I know it has nothing to do with user or network configuration.
    NAS server hardware:
    - Mac Mini core i5
    - 16 GiB ram
    -  Promise Pegasus Raid5 external drive (thunderbolt)
I am NOT running time machine as the backup.
Everyting posted above is occuring although the rate at which my users lose acces is sporadic.  Sometimes the server will stay up 24-36 hours and sometimes it will only stay up for around 4.  Every user, every group loses acces AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EVERYTIME to EVERY SHAREPOINT...all of my local users as well as my remote users.  All of my users are on Windows machines (mostly win7, but a couple of XP and 8 users as well).  The share is accessed via a mapped drive using the format x.x.x.x/share and I have had 0 issues with getting users connected.  The problem is 100% keeping them connected.  When the users lose access the get the "drive cannot be accessed" error on their end, however when I check the server 3 app, it still shows all users connected and I have let it run for a few minutes and the idle times do change.
I also cannot see any spikes in the Activity monitor that might indicate a memory strain issue on the server side, but I assume that is because I am not watching the Activity Monitor at the moment everyone loses access.
Let me say that the SMB2 protocol does work much better when it actually works, much faster, but intermitent connectivity is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE and has resulted in several corrupt files for my workers already.  Also, because I was one of the unfortunate people that had the upgrade lock up on me and I had to restart it, I lost my 10.8.x recover backup and so I would have to do a clean install in order to restore my server back to its original state. I am also hesitant to do this because I would most likely only be able to download the Server3 app from the app store and I have not heard from apple or any other power user group on whether the bug is with the app or the OS.

  • Sharing files between a Mac and PC

I have 2 Mac's and 2 PC's and they are all on a network via Airport Express and all connect to the Internet just fine. What I'd like to do is share files to and from all the computers on my network. I can see the Mac's just fine and copy files between them as well, however I cannot "mount" the PC's. When I go into network I see library, Mshome,My Network,Servers,Workgroup. In Ms Home I see one of the pc's and in Network and workgroup I see the other PC. When I click connect on either of the pc's regardless of which folder they are in i get the spinning lollipop and then a message that the alias needs to be fixed or deleted. Can anyone help me? I've turned on Windows sharing on my Mac and I've turned on sharing on the folders on my PC that I would like to have access to. What am I missing? I should mention that I know nothing about PC's. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help!

  • Common URL format for sharing file paths between Mac and Windows?

    Hi -
I have to integrate several Macs into a Windows environment. We need to be able to copy and paste file paths to share between all machines. Is there a common URL format that can be used between the platforms?
    On Windows, I have:
    \\server\share\file
    On the Mac:
    smb://server/share/file
    Thank you for your help,
    Steve

On Windows you have what is known as a "UNC".
On the Mac, you have a "URL". It starts with the protocol to use "smb" then gives the path to the item using standard conventions.
    UNC is Microsoft mainly.
The only way I know for Windows to use a URL is with an application like a web browser or ftp client.
On the Mac, you can use UNCs but they must be modified as follows.
    In Terminal:
    smbclient \\\\servername\\sharename\\filename -U username
And enter a password if prompted.
Notice that you must double up the slashes. This is due to how UNIX shells treat the backslash.
You will connect to the share, but it will only be in Terminal.
