Sharing settings across a network

Okay, I've searched to no avail. Is it possible to share mail settings and smart folders with constantly updating messages across a home network. This is what happens at my work. We use Outlook, and whatever computer I log into with my account, the Outlook I open updates (in the moment) and has all of the same messages/rules/folders as the computer I logged off in another room.
Can you do something like this on a home network?
Thanks.

Looks like I definitely posted this into the wrong forum.
After experimenting extensively, I consulted with Apple Technical support.
I was able to get the HD on the Airport Extreme to be visible on the other computers by fiddling with the settings in Finder Prefs.
However it is not possible to create aliases of the content of the hard drive nor get Front Row to view anything on the Airport Extreme HD.
iTunes will either copy the media over to the local HDs, spawning masses of files without any way to check a common set, or lose track of them after restarts.
I enquired if Apple's Time Capsule was any better, and other than being an all in one device with a fat ticket price, the answer is no.
Apple TV will only share limited media over a small selection of computers, too little and too few for my purposes.
So to sum up.
Why does Apple even bother, given it has done such a half baked job?

  • RE:  sharing photos across a network with Lightroom

I own Lightroom but haven't starting using it, mostly because I've heard that it doesn't work if you accessing photos from multiple computers across a network.  Is that correct?  Or is there a way around this?

I do use Lightroom on multiple computers that can work on a single network and, I believe I have the same question.  So let me see if I can ask it in a bit clearer fashion to get more complete advice from others.
My workflow for LR has been to use the licenses on my desktop and on my laptop.   That works fine once my postprocessing flow is done and the processed raw files are exported in jpg form to working folders and incorporated into the LR Catalog.   Those ppd images can be transferred by Windows across the network and the exported jpgs can be imported into both LR catalogs and both catalogs are easily synchronized.
Where the workflow seems to break down is for the unprocessed RAW files.  If, for instance, I use my laptop for pping the images, than the actual processed raw files only appear with their changes on my laptop and in its LR catalog.  If I use my desktop for processing, the Raw files on the Desktop have the processing changes embedded but those changes don't appear in the RAW files in the laptop.  So I end up with raw files on 2 computers and only the LR catalog that actually processed the image has its processing data saved.   The other computer only holds unprocessed Raw files.
Is there anyway to transer the processed raw files from one LR catalog to another along with their processed data?   Currently I find myself processing the Raw files on the other computer a second time quite often, which seems redundant.
To the OP, is this what you were thinking about?

  • What can I use to get shared media across OSes on my local network?

    Hey guys,
My family is getting a new home entertainment center and I've thrown together a PC from spare parts around the house to put behind it and I'd like to know if there's a program out there that would allow me to gather shared media across the local network (everyone else in my family uses Windows...mainly Vista   :-/ ).  If not, is there any other way I can access the shared media (short of putting Windows on the PC of course)?  I tried searching, but I couldn't seem to come up with anything.
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, so I've been working with Samba today, and I believe I have it working properly.  However, I can't seem to access any shared files/folders on machines that have Vista on them.
When I run smbtree, I get this output:
    \\HOMEMEDIA
    \\WINXPCOMP
    \\VISTACOMP1
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:445
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:139
    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP1<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    \\VISTACOMP2
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.105:445
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.105:139
    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP2<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    \\WIN7PC
I'm not really sure what to do here.  I've tried changing around settings in the smb.conf file, but I'm not really sure what exactly it is that I'm doing for every option.  Also, smbtree sometimes won't output a tree at all and it will just hang.  I'm quite confused, any suggestions on what I should try?
Also, one of my Windows 7 PCs won't show up on smbtree.  I can ping it though...maybe it's not on the right workgroup?
EDIT:  I was able to fix the problem with my second Windows 7 computer, apparently I had to change from 128-bit encryption to 40/56 bit encryption, then smbtree was able to pick up on it.

I cannot seem to get all of my music shared across the network from my MacBook Pro to my iPad. This was not an issue a few days ago. I can see all my songs if sorted that way, but if i sort by artist, only a few of them are present. Can anyone help or have any insight?

Well I didn't think of it before, but I logged out of my apple ID othe iPad's home sharing. The I logged back in and it worked. It's a little weird, but I will take it. Thanks!

  • Sharing an SD card or USB stick across the network

Why won't OSX allow me to share a USB drive or SD card across my network? I can plug it into my Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing, and add the card/stick/whatever as a Shared Folder, but the ' + - ' buttons allowing me to assign users to it are ghosted. Therefore it appears on my local network but it's inaccessible.
It's not the end of the world but it's not what I expected from "the world's most advanced desktop operating system". In fact it's something a PC could do at least three generations of Windows ago.
Am I missing something really obvious?
    Thanks

Try selecting a folder on that USB drive rather then the drive itself.

  • Sharing Photos across Network - Features Of

    Hi
I want to share my Library across the network with other users. I also want them to be able to copy and paste my pictures or atleast save them and also to be able to Search them.
I've tried this with 2 machines running iPhoto 5.04 and also 2 running 6.0.2 but I can't copy and paste unless I move the image from the Shared Album to the local Library and I can't search the Shared Library at all as it's greyed out.
Anyone know if it's possible to do a Search on a Shared Library and how? (wherher apple supported or not)
    Thanks Matt
    Macs o Plenty   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Okay. I think I have the solution. As I read it, you have two issues. First, you need to be able to share. Second, you want to copy photos from one computer to the other.
    1. Go under the preferences section of iPhoto (under sharing) on the computer you want to share from and select "Share my photos". Make sure that you have either selected "Share Entire Library" or checked certain albums if you chose "Share Selected Albums." If you don't pick any albums with that option, nothing will show up on the other/destination computer.
On the other computer, go to the preferences section of iPhoto (under sharing) and make sure the option to "Look for shared photos" is selected. If so, you should see the library from the sharing computer show up in your album list. You should now be able to browse all of the libraries on the sharing computer (or at least the ones you selected, if you did not choose to share all of them).
    2. To copy photos over to the library of the other computer (the one that is accessing the shared library of the first computer), select the photos that you want to add and drag them over to your library folder. iPhoto will start importing them for you.
That should take care of it. Let me know if it does not. You would not normally need to open any ports on your router as long as both computers are on the same network.
One more thing, if you want password protection, make sure to put a password under the sharing preferences for the computer you are sharing from.

  • Sharing isn't working across a network

I've run across a problem when I try to share my library across my network at home. I can see my wife's music library, but although she can see my libraray listed, when she tries to connect to it, it fails. I have checked in the sharing preferences and all the right boxes are ticked, but alas no luck.
I have also had the same problem with my iphone- it detects the library and then cannot connect either.
I am running itunes 7.6.2 on Mac os x 10.5.4 and my wife's mac is running 10.4.11
    Any ideas?

Very strange! I guess I didn't realize that you were working with a mixed network, though I don't think it should matter. Is the computer whose collection you are accessing a Mac or Windows machine? How about the other computers on the network? It is possible that you may need to cross-post this on the Windows iTunes board.
Anybody out there with experience with mixed networks? (mine is Mac-only)

  • Security settings for print and file sharing on a wireless network.

I would like to gather some security information on file and print sharing on my wireless network before I set it up . What steps do I need to take to make it secure? Is it better to just buy a wirelss print server?
    Thanks

You can secure the wireless network, set a password on the shared resources or both.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • Problems sharing media across network via USB of E4200

Wasn't sure where to post this.... I have been using the e4200 for about a week.  So far, so good!  However, a primary reason I purch it was the ability to share via USB across my network (Files and such).  Read the approved USB drives that r compatible and although my specfic drive was not listed (WD, my Passport) I connected it to the e4200 and set a folder called "movies"to share.  In this folder I have both bluray rips (25-32GB) and standard rips (5gb or less).  Regardless of source, the content was not playable.  It buffered like crazy.  So, is it as simple as using an approved USB drive and I will be able to share appropriately?
The same folder plays great when connected directly to one of my media streamers USB drive, so don't think the drive/source is bad.
    Thank you!

What is the capacity of the your WD HDD? The maximum HDD capacity supported by E4200 is 3TB. What is the hardware version of the device, also please mention the current firmware version of E4200.
You have mentioned that the media is not playable. Does it not play at all or it takes time to buffer and then play?

  • Sharing iPhoto Events across two networked computersHi there,

Hi there, I have currently running a G5 Powermac and G4 Powerbook both running 10.5.2 I have now succesfully managed to set up a network share across the two computers. On the G5 I want to put all my photo's and videos so they are off the laptop hence freeing up space on it. When I open iPhoto on the laptop I can see the share with the G5 and the respective folders that pictures reside in but I cannot see the events that I have set up for groups of pics. Is it possible to share events in iPhoto across a network? Many thanks

Sorry, I decided to move my bigger Powerbook iPhoto library to the G5 Tower and save the few pics from the existing library on the G5 to the desktop to import later. I then relaunched iPhoto on the laptop holding the alt key and browsed through the network to the new library on the G5. On opening I get the message "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." I checked the library file and its not locked and it says I have permissions to read and write (using APPLE i) so any ideas on where I go from here?

  • Digital Signatures Across the Network

    Hello,
We are currently working on a digital signature implementation across our network. What we want to do is set Acrobat to look for digital signatures in a specific location across all machines and profiles. In what ways could we possible accomplish this with out adjusting these settings for each profile on every machine?
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • My folder of playlists is showing up on my phone, but is no longer in itunes! How can I get them back into itunes to synch with my ipad? Sharing on our home network is enabled.

I'm relieved the playlists (there are 11 in the folder) are still on my phone, but I can find them nowhere in itunes. Other playlists are still there- just that one folder has disappeared. I synched my new ipad to the library, and when I did, the playlist was not one of the options in itunes.
Background: I have enabled sharing on our home network, and I haven't moved the locations of itunes files or changed anything with my computer, the settings, or my itunes login (apple id).
My goal is to restore the playlists from my iphone to the itunes library on my laptop so I can then synch the playlists to my ipad.
    Thank you for your help!

Music is not included in the backup (and nor are films or tv shows), only the contents of third-party apps are included. Did you not do File > Transfer Purchases when connected to your computer's iTunes to copy your iTunes purchases over, and/or have you not got a backup copy of your music somewhere e.g. on an external drive ?

  • How can I change all the settings of a networked printer?

I have a Canon iP5000 attached to a mini in another room, and want to print over ethernet from my iMac. All is ok for basic printing, but for some reason I can't get to all the print settings on the networked machine that are available from the machine with the printer attached.
The implication of this is that I can't print photos from my iMac, as the "high quality" option isn't an option I can select. Currently, I have to create a pdf, send it over, and then print from the mini as I can see all the options from there.
Is it a driver issue (Canon don't list a 10.6 driver on their website) or a Mac OS issue?

In order for you to see all the additional Canon printer features (known as PDE's) you must have the same driver installed on the Mac sharing the printer and the Mac connecting to the printer share.
If both the Mini and the iMac are running OS X 10.6, then you can download the Canon Printer Update v2.3 from Apple and install on both Mac's. If either Mac is already using v10.30.3.0 of the iP5000 driver, which was part of the v2.3 Canon Printer Driver Update for Snow Leopard, then you just have to ensure the other Mac is using the same driver.
If one of the Mac's is using a version of Mac OS X other than 10.6, then please reply.

  • Cannot connect to my Server across my network

    Hi
I have a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server preinstalled.
At this stage, I need my server only to be available on the local network and I am not part of a larger organisation. We have run an informal network in the past through our wireless router but want to use the server within this network mainly for file and print sharing, calendar, contacts and wiki sharing.
So, the network is as follows:
Wireless router provides access to the outside world, and provides IP addresses as subnets to the other macs and PCs. All the machines can see each other currently and can share files (permission dependent of course).
I have setup the new server and it has been given an IP address by the router. When asked to provide a domain name, as we don't currently want to point our internet domain towards this server, I followed the suggestion in the Getting Started guide and entered myserver.private.
I have activated all services except mail and VPN as I don't intend to host my mail internally and I am not ready to use VPN just yet.
All the other machines can now see the server - its name shows on all the finders and explorers. However, when we attempt to connect to it, Finder reports Not Connected.
The admin user for the server is the same as my user on my iMac, but when I attempt to connect my user to the server from the iMac (via the Accounts dialog in System Preferences setting Login Options and connect to Network Account Server), I receive an error stating that the server name cannot resolve. The error number is 2200 - Could not resolve the address. I have tried putting the IP address of the server in as well as the name, but no joy.
What am I missing? What else do I need to do?
Thanks in anticipation. Used to support Unix servers machines in the early 90s. But can't remember!

Here's what worked for me. Sounds like my office is similar to yours.
By default, the router acquires DHCP onfo from the ISP, including the address of the ISP's DNS servers. By default, each workstation acquires DHCP info (including DNS addresses) from your Router. That means that by default, your workstations contact the ISP's DNS servers directly. Nothing is telling them about the existance of your server, and many of their functions won't see it and won't work properly.
You have a choice, you can manually configure each workstation to point to your server for their DNS, or you can manually configure the router to hand out your server's address for DNS.
I prefer the second option, since it requires zero configuration of the workstations, which also means that any time a new workstation comes into your office (laptops, iPhones, etc.) the system just works. Less deskside support burden for you. The workstations contact the router for their DHCP handshake, and are told by the router to contact your server for all DNS inquiries.
On the server, obviously, you need to make sure that DNS is working correctly. That includes, manually entering your ISPs DNS servers (or any other DNS server you trust, like OpenDNS, Google DNS, etc.) in the Server Admin DNS Settings as the lookup servers (these go in the confusingly named "Forwarder IP Addresses"). Entering multiple external internet DNS servers in this box is acceptable, so you have some "failover" abilities.
Also, on the server, in System Preferences, you should manually configure the DNS options to point to the server itself. That means that when any random process running on the server needs a DNS lookup, it will use the DNS server running on the server to resolve it.
The downside of this approach I have described above is that if your server is ever shutdown, none of the macs will "see" the internet. Their macs will go to your server for their DNS inquiries, and receive no response, and get strange errors (timeouts). It means taht if you ever have to do server maintenance, you'll probably have to do it on nights or weekends, or temporarily change your router's DNS settings to point to the outside world DNS servers while your own server is down, and then change the router back afterwards. My server uptime has been very good so far, and this hasn't been a problem at my office.

  • How to share a Drive across a Network

I have just added an external drive to my G5 system that I need to share across a network as my internal drive which was shared is running low on space.
How do I make my external drive shareable? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Easiest way to share an external HD is with Sharepoints...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
It's just a GUI interface to the OS' functions, but you can also do it in NetInfo Manager with a lot more work & understanding.
