Sharing wireless in a three story old house in SF.

So I have a lot of networking equipment, and I just moved into the bottom floor of a Flat in San Francisco. The modem is sitting in a closet on my level, and it immediately hits a switch, and a couple ethernet cables go upstairs to levels two and three (who we knowingly share the connection with).
On floor two and three, they each have their own wireless routers..
Since this is really one connection, and we're all using laptops, seems to me it makes better senses to setup wireless distribution with repeaters or hi gain antennas as needed rather than three disconnected wireless routers on three floors all pulling their connection from a single cable modem.
Was hoping to get some topology advice on what the best way to setup wifi is in a San Fran multi level flat setup..
I have plenty of non apple routers, and I know the routers upstairs are airports of some variety.. I also own a belkin repeater and dlink hi gain antenna, all sitting boxed from previous living situations.

Since you have Ethernet available on all three levels, my suggestion is to use your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as the main Internet router connected directly to the modem. In turn, connect the Ethernet cables for both the 2nd & 3rd floor to the LAN ports on the AEBSn.
On both the 2nd & 3rd floors place a wireless router or access point and connect them to the Ethernet cables coming from your AEBSn. Be sure to configure each of these routers as bridges and if all routers will be operating in the 2.4 GHz radio band, set them at least 3-5 channels apart.
If you don't want to "roam" between floors, have each router create a wireless network with a unique Network Name/SSID and use different passwords for wireless encryption.
The primary drawback of this network configuration is that the entire network is on the same subnet. That would mean that if file/printer sharing is enabled on any computer connected to any of these router they will be able to "see" each other. So unless you have any issue with that, this would most likely be the simplest solution with the best bandwidth possible.

  • Do I need something more powerful to handle my three story home as far as airport express?

Shoud I buy something more powerful. My airport express cant seem to handle my three story home from the basement. I barely get any signal on my first floor and none on my second. When I stream forget about it cuz my feed stumbles and pauses. What the best option before I buy a new one. I already updated my airport express.

In my fairly conventional 2 story home, my cable modem is on the 1st floor near the north end of the house, and my office is on the 2nd story near the south end. I had endless troubles when I first installed just one Airport Extreme and tried to provide service to computers in my office. I tried adding a second AE in the office to extend the original but doing so over wireless was no better than the single router. Since trying to run ethernet throughout the finished house was not an option, I decided to try the home-wiring ethernet route. At the time the Netgear Powerline adapters were available from someone at a reasonable price so I purchased 3 of them, one for each router and one for a server/printer/NAS station centrally located for everyone to use the printer. While these don't give raging speeds (I average around 50mbps) they have worked well and certainly match the speed capabilities of my internet connection. Obvioiusly my 2nd AE is set up in bridge mode extending the first one. Hope this may help.

  • IPhoto Network Port Selection for Sharing - Wireless vs. Ethernet 1GB

I am sharing iPhoto 6.0.3 across the house between a Mac Mini Intel Duo (Media PC) and a Mac 20" Intel Duo (Desktop).
I initially had the sharing via wireless network, but with my large 8 megapixel files and 10,000 photos, sharing was impossibly slow to use. I use the wireless network to connect to the internet DSL router for all of my computers.
I recently installed a 1GB ethernet cable from one end of the house to the other (a six hour job!) and found that the speed problems were fixed nicely. However I have a problem:
    PROBLEM:
When I boot my Mac 20", it seems to default to the wireless connection for sharing iPhoto - which is too slow to work. The only way I can get it to 'connect' via the 1GB ethernet after a reboot is to unplug and replug the ethernet cable, which seems to 'transfer' the iPhoto connection from wireless to ethernet 1GB. Can someone please tell me how to force iPhoto, iTunes, and File Sharing to use the 1GB ethernet, and to leave the Airport connection just for the internet? Thank you.

    Grayner:
Have you gone into the Sharing Preference Pane's Internet section and looked at the options for internet sharing and the various ethernet connections available. I happened upon that section but don't know much about it.
Also what are the options in the Network Preference Pane?

  • The new power cord I ordered for my macbook air doesn't fit, too long; my computer is three years old. have they changed the powercord?

I have a three year old macbook air. I ordered a new powercord from amazon (two, actually), and it doesn't fit.
The cord connection is too long for my computer.
Is the new powercord a new size, and if so, is there any adapter?

Yes, there is a new style adapter called MagSafe2, you need the original MagSafe adapter.

  • Cannot download songs due to error 8328 but am on a shared wireless network

When I try to download songs from Itunes, it says an unknown error occured (8328), check the connection to the network is active and try again. I have read other discussions saying to changing settings on the router/ internet fixes it, however I am using a password protected shared wireless network of which I am not the administrator. Is there anything I can do or is it a setting in the network stopping my downloads?

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the corrupt tracks from the music section of your iTunes library, close & then reopen iTunes, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unchecked. This seems to help with partial downloads...
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the "Report a problem" links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

  • My MacBook Pro is three years old and seems to be running slower. Ideas of what to do?

My MacBook Pro is three years old and seems to be running slower. Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work.
First and most important, don’t run these commands until you have verified that they’re legitimate. Never execute shell commands from an untrusted source without knowing what they do, or at least that they don’t do anything harmful. I’ve posted these same commands, with minor variations, many times on this site. You should be able to find other discussions in which they were used without ill effects. Do that before proceeding.
Some of the commands will probably line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Moved house - iMac still showing as old house in all location services

    Hi
I recently moved house. I updated to Yosemite the other day, and was playing around with widgets and said Yes to using my location for weather.
Funnily enough, it used the location of my old house.
I the noticed that using maps, it pins me at the old house still, and using Find my iPhone it shows my Mac as being at the old house as well.
I tried adding home address details to my login contact. I have turned off and on location services.
How the heck do I get it to update whatever it needs to update to update my location!!

Well as it tuned out it was a corrupt com.apple.geod.plist file.
I was searching for info on why my apps were stuck in downloading, and noticed that com.apple.geod in my activity monitor services was 'not responding'. Hmm, geod I though, sounds like geographic. So a bit of googling, and other had noticed it was also not responding on their systems (Not responding processes in Actvity Monitor: callservicesd, coreaudiod, com.apple.geod, identityservicesd, and icloud he…
So after deleting com.apple.geod.plist from my library/preferences file, all was well and good!!

  • Moved house but iPhone/iPad think I am still in old house

I have recently moved house, about 2 km from my old house, yet both my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 (wi-fi only) think I am still at the old location.  This is apparent in any app that uses the GPS function, such as Maps, Google Maps, Wundermap, Saga and Foursquare.  I have been in the new house for a week.  Anything I have to do to get all my IOS devices to correctly recognise where I am?

It's the location of your WiFi access point that is causing the wrong location. Presumably, when you moved you took your WiFi router with you?
That router is in Apple's database of locations at the old house. In time, your iPhone (and others around it via crowdsourcing WiFi hotspot locations) will report your routers location as having moved to where it is now.
There's nothing you can do to speed up this process, except make sure your iPhone's Location Services are turned on, and it connects to this WiFi router regularly.
Your iPhone should report its correct location using aGPS alone if you turn off WiFi when it does its initial location look-up.

  • I upgraded my three year old ipad to IOS 8 and it's working very slow and irregular, can I go back to the old settings?o

I recently upgraded my three year old ipad to IOS 8 and it's working very slow and sometimes freezes. Can I go back to the old system?

No, downgrading the iOS version is not supported by Apple.
You could see if any of the following improve things :
    - closing apps via the iPad's taskbar : iOS: Force an app to close.
    - if having problems with Safari, clearing its history and data : Settings > Safari
    - soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    - backing up (and copying any purchases over to your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases) and restoring
    - adjusting settings e.g. turning 'reduce motion' on (Settings > General > Accessibility), turning off 'background app refresh (Settings > General), turn off multitasking gestures (Settings > General)
    - resetting back to factory defaults (after copying off purchases and any documents, photos etc that you want to keep) and then resyncing it back

  • I have an iMac 07 model and it has been running slow at start up.  Does a three year old hard drive cause your computer to run slow?

I was told by a second source store today that the hard drives in an iMac 07 model run slower with time, mine is a little over three years old.  Is this an accurate statement?

Computer slow downs can be caused by numerous things, age is not one of them. There is some really good reading here, I'm sure if you look 25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac closely you will be able to regain some lost performance.
BTW in your signature you list some antivirus software....that could be a cause right there as it's not needed on a Mac.

  • New Router, New PC, but my old wireless laptop still keeps the old information

    Also
    1) The laptop's "view wireless networks" still shows the old network name.
    2)  When selecting the new network name and hitting Connect, it does not even let me enter the new key (which linksys router sets and is a very long number).  It goes ahead with an already typed in key - which seems to me to be the old key for my old network on my old pc.

It seems that you are working on Windows XP operating system ..... try this setting:
Open wireless network connection properties .... go to wireless network tab....
remove all networks from preferred network list .......click "ADD" ..... type in the new network name under SSID blank space ......
Network authentication leave it under "open" .....
Data encryption make it disable .....
     Click ok ....
Again go to "view available network" ..... try to connect to new network..... it will ask you for network key ..... type in the key ...... confirm it & click connect ........
Wait for the message when it shows connected ............
    Try going online .......

  • I can't find the App Store after letting my three year old use my iPad.

My three year old son has deleted the app store off of my ipad and i don't know what to do to get it back? can someone please help

It cannot be deleted. None of the preinstalled apps can be deleted.
Swipe from screen to screen to look for it.
Check Settings>General>Restrictions and make sure that you didn't disable it.
You can also reset the home screen layout and the icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.

  • TS3274 Videos won't play.  Not YouTube or any other videos.  I also have no sound.  Are these common failures for a three year old gen 2  iPad?

Videos won't play.  Not YouTube or any other videos (just started today).  I also have no sound, keypad clicks, shutoff click, etc.  Are these common failures for a three year old Gen 2 iPad?

For the issue with the videos that will no longer work, try closing all apps and then reboot the iPad.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
For the issue with sounds, you have system sounds muted.
Check the side switch above the volume rocker on the side of the iPad. Flip it the other way and see if you get sound from the apps, keyboard clicks, etc.
If not, double tap the home button to bring up the task bar at the bottom. In the task bar swipe all the way to the right. Look on the far left side and see if there is a speaker icon. If there is, tap it and see if the sounds on apps come back. Then tap the home button.
You can change how the side switch works to either lock screen rotation or to mute system sounds. You can go to Settings>General>Set Side switch to Lock Rotation or mute. If you choose mute, the switch will turn off apps sounds. Otherwise you use the task bar as described above to mute those sounds.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.
