Sharing XML file between computers?

I've just set up all the computers in my house to put all new imports onto the same external hardrive, but i realised that this doesn't update all of the computers' itunes libraries, just the one that the songs were imported through.
I was trying to find away of constantly consolidating the libraries to the Hard Drive's music, but i then thought it might be easier if they were all effectively the same version of iTunes, ie. use the XML file. Is this possible?

Surely then, there must be one file that has all the data base information on it.
There's a binary file right next to the iTunes Library XML file called "iTunes Library". That's the database iTunes reads. If you look at it in the Finder, the "Kind" column even says it's an iTunes Database file.
I assume it's : iTunes Package Contents/Contents/Resources/English.Iprog/InfoPlist.strings
No, that's a list of strings the program uses that can be localized. You can look at it if you drag it onto the TextEdit program (but for goodness' sake, don't make any changes unless you really know what you're doing).
I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to accomplish. If it's to get multiple computers to look at the same iTunes Library, you're going to have problems if you have iTunes open on two or more computers at the same time. There's a reasonably good chance you'll eventually end up with two copies of iTunes trying to write to the preferences file at the same time, corrupting it.
You might be better off setting up one computer to be a kind of "server," sharing its library to the others via the network. It's not as slick, perhaps, but probably safer.

    Turn on File Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing, then you should be able to see them in the other Macs' Finder sidebars (under Shared). Click on them, click Connect As, and log in with the user credentials you're sharing from.

  • How to share files between computers and TC

    What is the best way to share content/files between computers (iMac and MacBook Pro)?
    I thought about using Time Capsule for this...is this NOT wise?
    Thanks

    What is the best way to share content/files between computers (iMac and MacBook Pro)?
    The simplest way to do this would be to enable File Sharing on both Macs.
    On each Mac....
    Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Sharing
    Enter a check mark next to File Sharing
    Now when you open the Finder or Macintosh HD, you will see the "other" Mac and you will be able to access files/folders, etc. on the other computer.
    I thought about using Time Capsule for this...is this NOT wise?
    The Time Capsule was designed to work with the Time Machine application to back up your Mac(s). As such, the TC will make a complete copy of each Mac on the first backup and backup any changes after that to keep a complete timeline of each Macs files. Each computer normally will only be able to access the backups for that given computer.
    While it is possible to store normal files or folders on the Time Capsule disk, this is not generally recommended as there will eventually be a struggle between Time Machine and the files on the disk as the drive begins to fill up. The other thing to keep in mind is that access to the drive for "normal" files will be quite slow.

    All you need to do is copy the Domain.sites2 file that's in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the same folder on the other computer.

    Yes, you can use the HTTP protocol as a transport for the XML message, this
    is basically what the HTTP binding for SOAP does. The key is using a
    packaging mechanism that different applications will understand, otherwise
    only your own applications will know how to extract and process the XML
    messages you send between them.

    It sounds like you have a directory of folders that contain photos in a specific organization that you want to copy to another computer. You can enable File Sharing to be able to access the photos from one computer on another, and even allow the viewing computer to be able to add photos or delete them, thereby keeping them the same across both computers. • Share persistence.xml file between two EJB modules in EAR

    Hello, everybody!
    First of all, I would like to say that I already posted this question in another forum:
    [http://community.jboss.org/thread/154128?tstart=0]
    But as I haven't got any answer from there and this issue is very crucial to me I'm posting it here too in the hope that I get an answer. So, here it goes:
    I have two EJB modules in an EAR module. I would like to know how to share a single persistence.xml file with these two EJB modules. If I replicate the persistence.xml file in the two EJB modules, the EAR project deploys ok, but of course that's not what we want. If I remove the persistence.xml file from any of the EJB projects, the EAR doesn't deploy properly. I'm stuck with this. I've already tried many kind of configurations but none worked. I really would like to have some help with this issue to proceed working. This is my EAR structure:
    solicitacoes-ejb.jar       (EJB session beans)
    solicitacoes-dao.jar       (EJB interfaces)
    solicitacoes-dao-jpa.jar   (EJB session beans)
    solicitacoes-ejbClient.jar (entities and EJB interfaces)
    solicitacoes-web.war
    META-INF/This is my application.xml file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <application
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/application_5.xsd"
    version="5">
        <display-name>solicitacoes-ear</display-name>
        <module>
            <ejb>solicitacoes-ejb.jar</ejb>
        </module>
        <module>
            <ejb>solicitacoes-dao-jpa.jar</ejb>
        </module>
        <module>

                <context-root>solicitacoes</context-root>
            </web>
        </module>
    </application>If I remove the persistence.xml file from one of the EJB modules, let's say solicitacoes-dao-jpa.jar, I get this error when deploying the EAR file:

    at org.jboss.injection.PersistenceUnitHandler.addPUDependency(PersistenceUnitHandler.java:130) [:1.3.1]
    ... 43 moreI need help with this issue. As you could see, the EJB container doesn't like to see an EJB module without a persistence.xml file. This is clearly a dumb decision though. I agree with it if there was only one EJB module in an EAR. But the container should have been smart enough to require only one persistence.xml file in an EAR module with more than one EJB module, and share that persistece context with the whole EAR.
    Acting the way it is acting now, the container forces us to duplicate the persistece.xml file and kill our application modularity. This is clearly wrong. I've already tried to put the entity classes and persistence.xml file in the lib directory of the EAR, but it didn't work either. The container needs to have the persistence.xml file in both EJB modules.
    I don't know if this is a JBoss implementation decision or if it comes from the Java EE 6 specification. Whatever it is, it goes against all good modular and good design decision. Please if some of you know how to solve this, took a little time to tell me how. I would be very grateful.
    Thank you in advance.
    Marcos

    Dear Mr. gimbal2,
    In another occasion I would not reply to such a 'helpful' answer like the one you gave me (yes, it is undoubtedly an answer because that's how you classified it in the beginning of your reply), but as today I have plenty of time here in my job, for this week we're not working full time as usual, I decided to reply to it.
    You have to completely overhaul your attitude.I really didn't know I was taking so personal on this issue to have to 'completely overhaul my attitude'. Thank you for pointing that out.
    In stead of calling the technology dumb, admit to yourself that perhaps you don't understand it properly and that your ideas of what is correct design perhaps is a little lacking. I didn't call the technology dumb because I stated very clearly that I don't know for sure if it is working this way. I said in the last paragraph:
    +"I don't know if this is a JBoss implementation decision or if it comes from the Java EE 6 specification. Whatever it is, it goes against all good modular and good design decision."+
    So, I let implicit the fact that the technology or the implementation of the technology is dumb only if it doesn't allow this possibility. Regarding the fact that your said that I should
    admit to myself that perhaps I don't understand it properly, where did I stated in my question that I understand it completely? It's clear in the last paragraph that I don't. If I'm asking that's because I have doubts. Maybe my ideas of what is correct is wrong, and that's why I'm here in this forum. But everyone with a good sense knows that what I propose in this discussion is by no means a wrong design decision. Where is it a sin to have more than one EJB module in a EAR and a persisntece.xml file shared for the whole EAR? Does everyone that has more than one EJB module in an EAR module need to connect to more than one database? Is it wrong to want to have your DAO implementation in a separate EJB module in order to make deployment easy and also changes, if you later want to replace that implementation with another one without affecting
    the other modules? I don't think that a design decision that seeks this is lacking. I don't think that Java EE today is a dumb technoloby, but everyone knows that before it gets to the present level, it was a technology known to have made big dumb decisions that the community latter corrected, with ideas like O/R mapping (Hibernate), dependency injection (Spring), Struts and lots of other examples that we all know. No one can deny this and lots of wrong things will continue to be fixed in later releases.
    Maybe when you rise yourself back to that level, you open yourself up again to thinking in correct solutions in stead of trying to hammer through your own poorly chosen one.To be sincere, I see you took very personal about this issue. You really shows to be someone that has no respect to other people and you judge them too. I must say that I got surprised by the way you answered my post. I didn't expect to get such sarcastic answer to what I asked. I personally don't act this way. If I can't help a person, I also don't try to ridicularize him.

  • Sharing .band files between ipads?

    Hi all,
    I have seen comments regarding not being able to share from Mac GB to iPad GB, bur is it possible to share .band files between IOS equipment eg two iPads or an iPad and iPhone? I have tried beginning a song on my iPhone, then sharing to iTunes in a .band file (which actually saves a few folders and files to a folder on my PC). Then on trying to "add" a file to my iPad in iTunes, but there is no ".band" file that I can see, just the folder and it's contents.
    I realise I could save the individual tracks as aif files and load them into a new song, but this kinda defeats the purpose of being able to share a song file with a mate for both of us to work on in midi format....
    Am I missing something here?

    It should be possible using the File Sharing system, but currently only using a Mac. You can export a .Band project and copy it to a PC using file sharing but what you get is a folder. There is no proper way to copy that folder back into the iPad, or a different one. I have heard tales of success using tools like iExplorer to mess around in the device's file system but I've not tried that myself.

    It's actually very easy, all you need is a single FireWire cable. Here are the instructions right from the Mac's Help menu:
    Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
    You can use FireWire to connect your computer to another Mac and have one of the computers appear as an external hard disk on the other computer. This is sometimes called Target Disk Mode.
    To transfer files using FireWire:
    Shut down the first computer and leave the second computer on.
    Connect the two computers using a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. (If both computers have higher-speed FireWire 800 ports in addition to the standard FireWire 400 ports, you can use a 9-pin to 9-pin cable with the FireWire 800 ports to transfer data at higher speeds.)
    Open System Preferences, click the Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start up the first computer while holding down the T key.) A disk icon for the first computer appears on the desktop on the second computer. Drag files to and from the disk to transfer them.
    When you finish, eject the first computer's disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
    Push the power button on the first computer to shut it down and disconnect the FireWire cable.
    If the computer to which you connect your computer is running Mac OS 9, it must have FireWire version 2.3.3 or later installed. Use Apple System Profiler (located in /Applications/Utilities) to check the version of FireWire installed. If it has an older version, get an update at the Apple FireWire website at www.apple.com/firewire.

  • Suddenly slow transfer of files between computers over LAN

    All, I have the following: HP Desktop, XP Pro, SP3, with Maxtor external HD Dell Laptop, VISTA Business, SP2 Both 32 bit Both running Norton Internet Security 2011, including firewall Linksys WRT54GL router V1.1, connected to DSL The external HD is configured to share over the network. I use it to move files between the twp computers, and to access the Internet. It has been working fine for about 3 years. Everything is still working, except that the speed of transfer, either direction, between the laptop and the external HD has dropped to nearly zero. Files that used to take a minute or so to transfer now literally take hours, and depending on the software, may time out. The problem is not so much the speed over the network, but that the data is only sent in short bursts, with long, many seconds, delays between. As the file progresses, the process gets worse. Typically, it takes as long to send the last 10 % as the first 90%. In the past, the data was sent in a continuous stream. The access between the laptop and the Internet is still fine. I am in a rural area, and have verified that there is no other WiFi to interfere. Using my backup program, I have rolled both my computers back to a time when everything was working. The problem still exists. That seems to point to the router. I have flashed the most recent firmware and reconfigured, but not help. Google turns up lots of hits, but nothing that fits this. Any suggestions on what to do next? For now, I am just swapping the USB drive physically. Alan

    Try to reset the router and reconfigure it.
    Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
    Change the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings.
    Go to Wireless tab and click on Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon Interval to 75, RTS and fragmentation threshold to 2304. Save the settings. Power cycle the router and see if that helps you.
    Disable or turn OFF the firewall or Anti-virus software on your computer.

  • Sharing music files between users while maintaining ratings

    I have two users on my MacBook Pro which I use every day.  One is my normal "home" user I use when at home.  The other is my "work" user which I use at work (I'm a software developer, so I have a separate environment for that).
    All of my new music gets downloaded/copied to my "home" user.
    To get the music into iTunes on my "work" user, I've taken a couple steps:
    1) I made an alias of my "Music" folder under the iTunes library in my "home" user and moved it to a more publically accessable location "/".
    2) In my "work" user, I've opened the preferences, gone to the "Advanced" tab, unchecked "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding a library," and changed my iTunes Media folder location to the /Music alias.
    This works great.  However, I've taken the time to rate all of the songs under my "home" user, and I'd really like those ratings to show up for my "work" user.
    There is 1 solution which is to copy the "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Library.xml" files from my "home" user to my "work" user.  However, this is cumbersome.
    Is there some way I can make the ratings just show up/sync?  Ideally, adding music under "home" would also automatically show up under "work," too.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your response.
    I do understand that what I want to do is not possible with iTunes if I can't get both users to use the same library file.
    Both users can access the same iTunes library file.
    However, it can only be accessed by one user at a time. (you can't have iTunes open on your home machine and work machine at the same time).
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folde in the you moved to a more publicly accessible location.
    That's all you need to do.
    Make sure you quit iTunes when you want to access the library while on the other computer.

  • Importing and sharing iPhone apps between computers. (legal?)

    I have several computers. Is it legal to transfer iPhone apps between computers using thumb drives or SD memory cards?
    Thanks!

    This shouldn't be a problem as long as you are using the same iTunes account with another computer.
    The problem is in regards to iTunes content including apps - iTunes content can be synced or transferred to an iPhone from a single computer only.
    If you try to sync your iPhone with iTunes content on another computer, the iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased first before the content will be re-transferred to your iPhone - even when using the same iTunes account, so I'm not sure what would be gained by doing this unless you want to start using another computer for syncing iTunes content with.
