Sharp sound after start up and before shut down.

Hello. I'm on Dell XPS L401x laptop with JBL speakers. Earlier I had Arch Linux installed. I am setting it up again after hard drive crash. I have Gnome 3 installed and sound is being managed by PulseAudio - Alas setup.
Problem is that, whenever I boot up the laptop, there is sharp loud sound as if speakers were just powered on. Same sound pulse is heard just before the machine shuts down. Similar behaviour when I suspend it. Apparently, its a power issue. Speakers are being powered up and down, giving out the sound. But the sound is so sharp, that I'm afraid that it will break my speakers. Any solution to this? I am not using any power extra utilities yet.

I was so frustrated yesterday that I didn't even put enough information in OP - my bad. So, I'll put here whatever I've done.
First thing, I added a line to disable power save to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
After this, my startup pop vanished. However, suspend pop, resume pop and shutdown pop were still there.
Then I went ahead and edited file /etc/conf.d/alsa and set value of 'power off on shutdown' to "yes". This setting apparently mutes the speakers before powering the machine down. After this, my shutdown pops are gone. However, my machine by defult starts muted, which is annoying.
Anyway, I removed the powersave option from modeprobe.conf and start up pop is still gone.
So, current state is: No startup problem. Loud pops while suspend, resume and shutdown. Shutdown pop is removed by editing /etc/conf.d/alsa:
# Whether to mute the master volume when stopped ("yes" or "no").
# Useful for bad audio cards which make a noise on system poweroff.
MUTE_VOLUME="yes"

For the "before shutdown" pop - you may have to hack your initscripts so that the ALSA modules *don't* get unloaded.
As a bit of reassurance, I've never heard of these annoying pops being the cause of physical damage.
Its really nice to see you here brebs. I have been reading your posts about this yesterday. When you ask me to hack initscripts, exactly what is to be done. Will this work for suspend-resume. And thanks for the reassurance, but mine is less like a 'pop' and more like a spike!
One more important thing! On my earlier setup, I DO NOT remember using pulseaudio at all. Apparently, Alsa was managing everything directly. Is pulseaudio really needed? My experience wasn't particularly pleasant with it. Firstly, it defaults my sound to HDMI soundcard and I'm unable to hear anything. Secondy, nder input device, it does not list my microphone unless I select 'all input devices' from the dropdown on bottom of pulseaudio volume control. Thirdly, in applications like skype and google video call, I have to manually go to pulseaudio and tell it to choose the internal microphone of my laptop. Otherwise, it loves to take input from HDMI card!

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • Mac shuts down after start up and before it was acting very slow, please help!!!

Recently my imac has been running unusually slow when I open/close apps or when loading things, it sometimes would freeze or take about 20 secs to load etc.
So in an attempt to fix it it cleared all unnecessary files from my computer but nothing too technical.
Then yesterday i was told by my brother to go onto disk utilities and verify/repair the disk. Both times it failed and further repeats failed. After the repair disk failed a message along the lines of "back up data you want then restore the disk" something like that.
Now today when I started up my computer in the morning it was fine, then a couple of hours ago I restarted it, and now it won't turn on properly. It goes to the apple icon with a spinning loading wheel and a empty bar underneath and after about 20 secs it shuts down. So then I did the thing where you hold down cmd and r to open osx utilities and went to disk utilities again to try and repair/verify the disk and again the same failure and messages came up suggesting to restore my disk.
Being 16 I only understand so much and understand that I will probably have to put in the installation disk or something and "re do my computer from scratch." But I do have things I want to back up before I do so but due to the load up problem I have no way of backing up photos, music and files and i don't know if the time machine has backed up the data for me (I don't really understand the time machine). I'm currently using my phone to post this, any help would be greatly appreciated because I don't really know what else to do now. My imac is 21.5 inch that I bought around 2years ago late december time. Thank you for your time

Sounds like a classic HD failure. Take the machine to your local Apple Store or AASP, if it is still covered by AppleCare they will handle it at no charge. If you have been backing up then once the machine comes back restore from backup. I get you are only 16, so I'd explain to  your parents the computer needs to be taken in for service, if they bought it for you they would know if it is covered by AppleCare or not, assuming they originally bought the computer for you.
    Good luck.

  • IMac Starts Up And Then Shuts Down ...

    Hi ...
I'm hoping that someone out there can help me ...
I purchased an Apple 24" iMac about 3 years ago ...
It was pretty much working perfectly until 2 days ago ...
The last time it was fully operational I'd just switched the computer on for the day - opened iTunes - and was using the FINDER to find approx 600 MP3s to add to iTunes ...
Whilst the FINDER was searching for the MP3s the iMac froze ...
So I decided to RESTART the computer by holding the POWER BUTTON to shut the computer down ...
I gave the computer around 10 secs to shut down ...
Then when I pressed the POWER BUTTON to START the iMac again it reached the grey screen with the Apple logo and the rotating dial ...
The computer then started emitting an audible clicking sound as if it was searching for / organising data ...
The sound eventually stopped but the iMac froze on the grey screen ...
So again I decided to RESTART the computer by holding the POWER BUTTON to shut the computer down ...
I gave the computer around 10 secs to shut down ...
Then when I pressed the POWER BUTTON to START the iMac again it reached the grey screen with the Apple logo and the rotating dial ...
    And froze again ...
I followed the instructions contained within the EVERYTHING MAC booklet ...
I tried holding the OPTION key whilst starting up ...
I tried holding down the COMMAND OPTION P and R keys to reset the PARAMETER RAM ...
I also tried holding down the D key whilst starting up to test the Apple Hardware ...
My iMac passed the Apple Hardware Test ...
However every time I now try to start the iMac it reaches the grey screen (Apple logo / rotating dial) and then shuts down after approx 1 minute ...
Is this simply a boot problem ? ...
What alternatives do I have to boot up / correct the problem ? ...
I'd be ever so grateful if someone out there could help walk me through alternative actions to take ...
    Kind regards ...

    Hello
Try target disk mode see if your mac shut down from this way , to do that
hold hon at start up "T" on key board just after startup sound until screen show a firewire logo as screen saver
    and wait ..
if by chance you have a second mac you can use a fire wire cable to link it , in that way your mac is like an external hard drive , most easy way to recover data from it
Try start in single user mode ,  use COMANDE - S at start up
Try start in safe mode , use SHIFT key at start up
if in all case you mac shut down after 1 or 2 min of use , certenly mean a mother board and or powersupply problem
be sure to have perform SMC and PRAM reset at least 3 times each
    HTH

  • Acrobat Standard 10 starts up and then shuts down within a few seconds

Im running windows 7 professional. I was using adobe acrobat Standard 10 and downloaded and installed the files to be able to view 3D pdf's. after that it would open acrobat standard and then shut down after a few seconds. So then i tried to use acrobat pro 11 and then it worked fine. The problem was that this acrobat was only a trial version. I then tried to do a system restore to just have the acrobat standard 10. I then was having the same issues as before. So i unistalled everything including the 3D viewing program. Reinstalled just acrobat standard 10 and i still have the same issue. I manually downloaded the latest update and that has not worked. I am not to sure what to do???

With the uninstall (and hopefully deactivation), you should have also run http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html and removed the Acrobat folder. the reboot and reinstall.

  • Mac Pro starts up and then shuts down, how do I fix this?

Recently when I start up my Mac Pro it start its process and then I see the Apple Logo and then the screen goes black and the monitor says I think something like no digital signal.  I have to start up my Mac Pro a number of times before it finally stays open.  Because I use to see a bright flash when the Mac Pro would start up or shut down, I thought that may be the problem had to do with my monitor but I'm not sure.  I tried disk utilities and Tech Tools Pro 6 but nothing so far has helped the problem.  I don't think its my harddrive since all test say its OK.  Then I remembered some says something that computers have an internal battery and that they need to be replaced from time to time.  I don't know if my Mac Pro has a battery but does anyone know if this would cause my problem?

There is a pram battery but I don't think that's the cause of your problem.
Have you blown all the accumulated dust out of your machine?
Try reseating the video card, maybe the ram too.
Run Apple Hardware Test (boot from your second installer DVD, push D down immediatly after the boot chime).

  • Photoshop 7 Starts up and then shuts down om on one user

We have three Users on this Dell PC running Windows XP Pro. My son is handicapped and his Photoshop starts up and after running all the intro stuff simply shuts down. This does not happen on my side of the same machine.
Someone suggested clearing out some fonts. I got my list down below 500.
It did not help. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

The Splash Screen goes by so quickly that it's tough to say.
It starts "Initializing" - gets one step or two past Fonts and shuts down.
I just tested my wife's side of this PC and her Phtoshop works perfectly - but, she never uses it.

  • Recovery folders in trash bin after restart, sleep and or shut down...

I noticed at times when i shut down, sleep or restart my imac "recovery" folders show up in my trash bin... i dont have a clue of why it does that.. is it a bad thing? why does that happen?

The folder is explained in this article; it appears because the startup scripts don't delete the contents of this folder.

  • Mail starts up and directly shuts down on Ipad

When I start mail on my Ipad, it opens up but directly shuts down

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
You could also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • My IMAC seems to have died after power surge. It shut down and won't start.  What shall I do?

my IMAC seems to have died after power surge. It shut down and won't start.  What shall I do?

I would recommend you try an SMC reset at this point:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If that fails to solve it, it is probable that the power surge damaged some of your iMac's hardware components, and will need to be repaired at an Apple Authorized Service Center.

  • Several Apps seem to just mysteriously shut down after using for a while. Same with Safari, I will be using Safari and it shuts down. Face book too. I've reset and shut down my iPad 3 and restart it, but it stills shuts down. What to do?

Several Apps seem to mysteriously shut down after using them for a while. Face Book shuts down , netflix, Safari, and other Apps. They work fine for a short while, or a long while, and then shut down and it brings me to my regular desktop screen. I've tried restarting by completely shutting down the IPad until I see the apple pic and turned it back on, but the shutdowns of apps continue. Anyone else have this issue? It generally started shortly after downloading and installing IOS 7......

    Hi jennyoutwest,

Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition. Before restoring:
Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes.
    Back up your device.
Transfer and sync content to your computer.

  • My power mac g4 was working fine i hit a key and it shut down and now it has the symble of the firewire slot floting around the screen and i can not get it to start back up

my power mac g4 was working fine i hit a key and it shut down and know it has a symble floting around the screen like the firewirs symble and ot wont turn back on how do i fix it

It does sound like the T key is stuck.
One way to test to see if the keyboard is at fault is to disconnect the keyboard, then start up the Mac.
Note - on that model, you can force a shutdown by holding in the power button (the one on the front panel of the machine) for 8 to 10 seconds.
You can also force a restart by pressing the small convex (bulges out slightly) button under the power button on the front panel (it's the one on the left).
