Sharp stroke effects

I don't know if there have been a thread like this in this forum but please just allow me to ask this question.
I've been using photoshop and I always utilize the power of its blending options (effects). For almost all of my edits that I use the stoke effect until I came into this problem. I want a sharp cornered stroke effect but I googling didn't give me any hint. Can anybody here help me?

Why not Photoshop code writers give the users the option to select between rounded and sharp corners (just like the good old Aldus PageMaker). And even more, give the user the option to set the radius size when it opts to rounded corners.
Photoshop is primarily an professional standard image editing program and for that it is top of the range.
If you want more than the basic drawing tools that are provided, use a drawing program as JM says.
We don't need any more bloat!

Photoshop stroke effect transparency - non-additive

I am building a specialized map for my local area with territory borders that need to have 8-pt strokes around them. Because each territory needs to live on it's own layer (to be printed seprately after the overview map is done) I found the easieast method to be selecting each territory with the polygonal lasso tool and then make a new Layer via copy and then gve the top layer the stroke effect I need. I worked fine when the strokes were at 100% opacity, but I later decided that each stroke should only be at ablout 60% opacity so that you can see the roads, rr track and other detailes beneath. In this case, the problem arises when territory boundaries overlap (as pictured below) because the stroke transparency of becomes additive where the 2 strokes overlap.
Can anyone tell me what setting I may use to make these strokes so that they can overlap and appear with absolute 60%transparency?

Another idea is to stroke the center line at about 20 pixels, and blur the line. Then reload and invert the selection, and delete the pixels outside the selection. That would give a nice gradient on the inside, but a hard sharp edge on the outside. It might look OK from a design point of view.
I can't remember if I have shown this here before, but I sometimes use the same idea to add specular highlights to edges in photographs.
In this image the RNZAF Strikemaster was being lost against the background because its outline was tonally too close to the background. So I ran the Pen tool around its upper outline, and stroked it with white (on a new layer of course. I then blured the line, reloaded the selection, inverted it, and deleted the pixels outside the line. This works here because the windows in the background could easily have created the secular highlight on a shiny surface with an extremely flat reflecting angle. The eye picks on points like that intuitively, and on a subconcious level.

Stroke effects not exporting to PDF from CS3

Hi,
I'm using CS3 on Windows XP. My problem is that some stroke effects are not showing up in PDFs. On a two page document, the effects on page one do not show up on the PDF but the effects on page two show up perfect. I've tried multiple export presets with no luck. All the other effects export perfectly. The strokes are part of an object style, but I've tried doing them independently, also with no luck.
Thoughts? Help?

You'll get more help if you provide some more details about the stroke effects you are applying, and what they are applied to.

How do you increase the Brush Size past 50 on the Stroke Effect?

Hey Everyone,
I created a photo in Photoshop and I imported it to AE, and I've been trying to create a Spray Paint effect by using the Stroke effect and Reveal Original Image to look look like as if I'm spray painting the the picture on the wall. All is going well until I get to the brush size, and it only goes up to 50. Does anyone know how to increase it past 50? 50 is to small, it won't cover what I want it to cover for the stoke. I can't seem to figure out a way to get it higher than 50, and I don't know any other way to create the effect I'm trying to go for. Anyone know how to either get past this or know a different way to get make it look like I'm spray painting the picture on the wall? Any help at all would be great.

The After Effects CC (12.2) update increases the maximum size of the brush for the Write-on effect and Stroke effect to 200 pixels (from the previous maximum of 50 pixels).

Is it possible to apply a stroke effect to a Photoshop image in After Effects?

Hello,
I've imported an image (a maze) from Photoshop into AE, and I want the image to appear as if it's being drawn in using the Stroke animation. Is it possible to apply some kind of path along which the image can "fill in"--similar to how you can do this with text? I didn't see a way to convert the image into a shape layer on which I could apply the Stroke effect, either.

Followed everything you said up until using the solid as a track matte, where I got a little confused.
The effect worked more or less how I wanted when I set the starting value of the stroke at 100% and set track matte of my original image to Alpha Inverted. When I did this, it gave the effect that the solid was disappearing to reveal the original image, if that makes any sense.
Is there anyway to adjust the brush shape? Right now it is a circle, is it possible to change it into a square? The circle brush gives an awkward edge line as the lines of the image begin to appear with the stroke effect.

Outline Stroke, Effects, and Appearances.

Dear Adobe Users, Please come to my aid, I am at my wit's end.
I am trying to recreate the effect described here (http://opentype.info/blog/2012/08/09/the-google-maps-effect-in-adobe-illustrator/) - to whit, a a non-destructive, merged series of paths with a complete outline, with paths that can be resized at will without affecting any other paths, and any overlap areas should merge.* I have only been able to replicate it once and I cannot seem to do it a second time. Every single time I go to Effect > Path > Outline Stroke, nothing happens: an ‘outline stroke’ effect tab is added on the appearance panel, but nothing at all happens to my lines, they don’t change in the slightest.
I can add all the outline stroke effects I want (in the appearance tab) - no effect. I can double click on the outline stroke - nothing happens. There's nothing to edit. I can move it around - no effect. I can get OBJECT > Path > Outline stroke to work, of course, but that is not non-destructive: it destroys my paths, and I can't add new paths or anything.
I cannot copy-paste the successful attempt into new layers. I cannot duplicate the layers into new files and have the effects still work. I cannot copy existing paths into the layer and use the eye-dropper to copy the effects.
Please, someone, come to my aid! What did I do right, and how can I do it again?

Scale Strokes & Effects in Photoshop CS5

The Scale Strokes & Effects-option used to reside in the Preferences dialog box.
Seems like it has been removed in CS5, anyonene know why, or where a simmilar function
may be found?
Thing is, when i add a Stroke (Layer Effect) to a layer, the thickness stays the same when I
transform/resize(ctrl-T) that layer. I really need the border to shrink accordingly as shown in
the image below.
A workaround would be to convert the layer to a Smart Object, but when working with all too many
layers, it's more about saving time.

Don't remember seeing such an option in Preferences. You are getting confused with Illustrator.

Why are the stroke effects on my vector shapes in PS5.5 not showing?

They were there earlier...
Layer effects are enabled for the affected layers and the layers show the stroke effect active on the shapes, in a colour and size that would be very visible.
Is there some other overall setting I may have accidentally triggered?
I've tried restarting a couple times.

Thanks Mylenium, I just checked that and that's not the problem...
Other files are fine, so it must be something specific to this file...
Strokes on single lines (unenclosed shapes) are fine in the this problem file too.

InDesign cs5, stroke effects js

Hi,
I need to change stroke's effect to Difference' and I could not find anything for effects in the OMV under StrokeStyle or anything under Stroke. How do I assign it, or am I'm looking in the wrong place at all.

Hi,
Well, unfortunately, you are looking at wrong place.
StrokeStyle is managing Dashed/Dotted/Striped strokes, and not for managing stroke effects.
You want to change stroke transparency settings, so the code would look like this:
app.selection[0].strokeTransparencySettings.blendingSettings.blendMode = BlendMode.DIFFERENCE;

Scale and Stroke Effects

I'm trying to manipulate my stroke and see the option for
AI > Preferences > General > Scale and Stroke Effects
though after checking it, it does not seem to change anything. What does it do?

Read it again.
The preference is not Scale and Stroke Effects. It's Scale Strokes and Effects. It determines whether Strokes and Effects are scaled when you scale the object(s) to which they are applied. It is also selectable in the Transform palette's flyout menu.

Missing the stroke effect in AE CC

I can't find the "stroke" effect in After Effects CC. Is it gone? Or is something wrong? Any idea how to get it back?

Not sure what you mean. There's been no change in that regard. It's still under Effects --> Generate --> Stroke. if it isn't in your case, you need to provide more details and explain.

How best to animate Stroke Effect for a text gif?

In CS5, the stroke effect can produce some great looking effects on text--- but I've not found any way to animate stroke, only the basic parameters; you can keyframe a style on-off, but I need to keyframe the scale slider in the Fill Type window. I tried going into After Effects CS5, but it lacks the fine detail parameters for stroke that get the effect I want ( it doesn't allow Pattern Fill at all, nor Scale). Is it not possible to animate the special effects? Hoping someone might have some ideas on how to get stroke effects animated on text.

To make any smooth motion, you'll want to make it into a
movieclip, then tween it using AS or timeline tweens. You can
connect this action with some script on a button allowing for more
control.

Is there a way to temporarily disable "Scale strokes & effects"?

I want to be able to scale some charts without changing the stroke size. But I don't want this preference permanently changed. Is there a key to hold down so that when I enlarge the charts that the stroke size stays the way it is? Thanks...

Julie,
Why go to the preferences?
I suggested your using the Transform palette flyout and tick/untick Scale Strokes & Effects there.
And you can scale up using the Transform palette by adding *2 and *2.5 in the W or H box and Ctrl/Cmd+Enter, so you can keep everything there.
It also has the easy option of deciding where to scale from by selecting the relevant Reference Point.

Stroke effect

Is there a limit to the number of instances on layers that the Generate Stroke effect can be used? I currently am experiencing major rendering/preview issues when having more than 20-25 layers running simultaneously. I have a six-core system with 24GB of ram and a video with 2gb dedicated DDR5 ram, that usually runs flawlessly. I'm currently working on a project with about 500 layers, of which 200 are generated strokes using paths copy and pasted from Illustrator.

Thank you for the insights and ideas, they are very much appreciated. While I am working with many layers, I should point out that they are not all on at the same time throughout the timeline. Each animated stroke is completely unique. I definitely have OpenGL off and my preview resolution is often at a custom level below quarter. Here are more details if you're interested, but again, I really appreciate the input.
I am working on animating a illustrated map that is an 8000x8000 png. I have probably 250-300 layers of the map with various animated masks, moving camera, feathering, modes, roughen edges and opacity to simulate ink bleeds. While this sounds heavy, the 2 minute clip usually took about 4 hours to render at 960x540. The previewing at either half or quarter resolution was maybe a second or two to load. As soon as I added the animated lines using the paths from illustrator, render time shot up to 25-30 hours estimated and climbing. These lines are not incredibly complicated, using 15-30 points at the most. I found that 15-20 simultaneous instances of layers with the Stroke Effect on didn't change preview or render time at all, but as soon as the number inched above 20, everything took a nose dive. 10 minutes just to preview a single frame at half resolution, retiling of my open windows and palettes, white screen flashes. If I dialed it back to 20 or less, back to normal! So, I decided I would precomp just the lines, same story. Ended up doing two passes with every other layer turned off each time, and the render time was about 6 minutes for the two minute clip at 1920x1080. If I tried to render just the Stroke Effect layers allowing up to 30-32 simultaneously, the same problems would return, even without the additional ink bleed layers. For some reason, this just felt like a really hard and unexpected wall to come up against, especially given the relatively minor additions of the lines compared to the overall complexity of the project, as well as the continued problems even when isolated.

Multiple Stroke effect in a Single Text !

I came across a project where i have to use 3 stroke effect to the Title, So in simple duplicated three times increase and adjusted the stroke size of the duplicates but, it became tedious at times to correct the size of duplicated text everytime we change the title, Any possible way for multiple stroke effect without duplicating the Text (have tried the text animate properies with stroke too)
