Sharpening for books

hallo,
sorry for my bad english, here is my question.
i want to use nik sharpener for sharping my pictures and then print it in a photobook with iphoto. nik sharpener requieres information about the print method for sharpening; and i have no idea witch method is used for printing the iphoto books.
any suggestions for me?
in nik sharpener are many possibilities, like
• Color Laser
• Offset
• Inkjet
• Lab Phatographic
Any idea witch is to choose for the photobook?
many thanks in advance
kind regads
tom

I think inkjet should be the choice.
Since Kodak is doing the printing for Apple, I believe they are using some version of their (Kodak's) VERSAMARK printers which are inkjet. It's a much bigger, faster and better quality version of what you would have in your local CVS.
Or they would be using a DIRECTPRESS, but that is unlikely...

  • Output Sharpening for Blurb?

Thinking I'll try the Blurb book service. No problem capture sharpening in Lr. But what to do about output sharpening? Is there a way to take advantage of the output options in the Print module and move output sharpened images to a desktop folder? Or must I run everything through Photoshop?

Yes, John. I didn't see any difference except for the preview window in the Detail panel of Develop. Is that not still just capture sharpening? I assumed output for printed pages would still be available only in Print mode, or in Photoshop.
If anyone has tried outputting for book-making software, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience. Best-practice sharpening for these seems a little murky to me. I'm wading through Blurb FAQs and forums, but guess I'll probably need to make a test book to see what happens. Mainly, I wanted to try something other than an Apple book to avoid having to run everything through iPhoto or, heaven forfend, buy Aperture.

The audio inputs on Macs are line level inputs and not mic inputs.  You need a mic with a built in preamp (battery powered) or more conveniently a USB mic or bluetooth headset.

  • I can't search for books or authors on my iphone 6. It says no results found every time. Is there some setting I may have wrong? I have been using my kindle app instead.

I can't search for book or authors in ibooks.  When I search an author or book and click on it a message that says not results found comes up.  Even if I try to look up something popular like Dracula or Twilight.  Is there some setting I should have clicked?  It won't find or download any books at all anymore.  This started about a month ago.  I have been using my Kindle app instead.

    Hi laurieg23,
I see that you are having issues with your connection to the iBooks Store. Here is an article with some troubleshooting steps that will be relevant to your issue, even though the article was written for issues with the iTunes Store:
Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings > General > Software Update(iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking Check for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check the user guide for your device for help with connecting to the Internet.
Make sure that other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router.
If the issue persists, try troubleshooting your Wi-Fi networks and connections.

  • Solution to iPhoto spinning beach ball for Book projects with too many unplaced photos

A few days ago I discovered the solution to this problem for a client using iPhoto 9.5.1 in OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
    =====
TRIED ALL KNOWN SUGGESTIONS BUT NONE HELPED
My client had already tried repairing, rebuilding etc. the iPhoto Library, and I tried OS X's Disk Verify and Repair Permissions plus emptied the cache folder in system Library and in the hidden user Library folder (option-key "Go" menu, Library). None of this helped.
    CLUE TO PROBLEM
I noticed several of her iPhoto Book projects each had thousands of "unplaced" photos. In each of those cases, each Book project only had 10-50 "placed" photos used to order the book but thousands of "unplaced" photos. In a Book project, clicking on the bottom-right corner's "Photo" icon-button caused an extremely long lasting spinning beach ball making iPhoto unusable for long periods.
I discovered the problem by clicking once on an existing Book project's name in the left column of iPhoto, then letting go of the mouse with its arrow cursor hovering over the selected Book project name. Within 1-7 seconds, a little pop-up appears listing the total number of photos (placed + unplaced) in that Book project. For many Book projects, the total number was just several more photos than the number of "placed" photos, e.g., a Book with 25 photos showed "(37)" in the pop-up info by the hovering stationary mouse, meaning 37 total photos (placed + unplaced) are associated with that Book project.
    BUT...
...some projects listed over 5,000 (five thousand) photos associated with a single Book project that had only placed 20-40 photos in the final printed book. One Book project had 6,070 and several other small book projects showed over 1,000 photos. In each Book project with a mass of unplaced photos, clicking the bottom-right "Photo" icon-button caused a very long-lasting spinning beach ball, almost certainly because iPhoto struggled to build a huge list of thumbnails for the mass of unplaced photos.
My client didn't understand how to efficiently add photos to a new Book project and was clicking on the pull-down menu in the right column that appears after clicking the Photo icon-button within the Book project. From the menu she chose "Last import..." or other menu choice that added a mass of "unplaced" photos to the Book project.
She didn't realize that after creating a new Book project, she could simply drag an individual photo or multi-selected group of photos or an event or "faces" group from its respective library section and drop it onto the Book project's name in the left column, thereby adding only a small group of "unplaced" photos.
    USER SOLUTIONS
=====Delete mass of "unplaced photos" within a Book project
This works best for cleaning up smaller number of unplaced photos from completed Book projects.
    Problems with solution:
    - if the number of unplaced photos is huge, e.g., 6,070, the list of unplaced photos won't appear for a long, long time if ever.
    - even if the list of unplaced photos finally appears, there's no way to select more than one thumbnail at a time, i.e., command-a for Select All doesn't work, nor do shift-clicks and command-clicks for multi-item selecting. You must click one photo then tap the "delete" key on your keyboard repeatedly and fast for this to be practical (note: delete key presses are cached here (meaning accumulated until it catches up processing them later); tapping the delete key like mad then waiting for iPhoto to catch up takes lots of patience.
====Delete an entire existing Book project containing a mass association of unplaced photos
This is practical if you've already printed your Book project and no longer need it. My client chose this method for Book projects with a mega mass of unplaced photos.
    Problem with solution:
    - for incomplete Book projects in progress with a mass of unplaced photos, you'd have to start over after deleting the whole thing.
    NEED FOR IMPROVED IPHOTO FEATURE(S)
    (1) The existing "Clear Placed Photos" button within a Book project might be useful, but it'd be even better to also have a button to "Clear Unplaced Photos,” and this button should be available outside of the section that struggles to display thumbnails of large numbers of unplaced photos. Clicking "Clear Unplaced Photos" would do the trick.
    (2) An additional iPhoto behavior might help: iPhoto should warn with an option to cancel when adding a mass of photos to the "unplaced photo" section if the number of photos exceeds ??? (400??).
    (3) Add another choice to iPhoto’s special startup Administrative window (Repair, Rebuild, etc.): "Remove unplaced photos from existing projects. (Doesn't destroy any photos in Library)"
    Whew!

Like I mentioned in the post, corruption was probably ruled out by running all the Admin features at iPhoto startup (e.g., Rebuild, etc.). I also stated in my post that I also ran a Disk Verify and Repaired Permissions in OSX (via Disk Utility). I also emptied system Library cache files as I stated in my post.
I was paid to figure out the solution and am not getting paid to troubleshoot for Apple. The more unplaced photos there are in a Book project, the longer it takes to build thumbnails. It's an old general problem in computing when building lists on the fly.
The delay happened for all Book projects with lots of unplaced photos (almost*** certainly more than Apple imagined a user would use), and the beach ball delay was proportional to the number unplaced photos, which super large numbers of photos.
I very much doubt photos are corrupt. But Apple will probably figure it out. It was EASILY reproducible. Try it with different number of unplaced photos known not be corrupt (they display fine elsewhere and iPhoto's and Disk Utlity's admin Verify, Repair etc features show no problems).
    I'm done with this.
My client's iPhoto works well now and she knows how avoid placing exorbitant numbers of unplaced photos into her project. I'm not getting paid to answer all this, so good night.

  • How to upload two different asset values for Book & Tax Depre in FA

    Hello all
kindly let me know how to resolve a situation where we have different methods of calculating Depreciation. For Example SLM for Book Depreciation and Diminishing method for Tax Depreciation.
To calculate depreciation we use straight line method for book depreciation and diminishing value method for Tax depreciation. In this case, we have 2 different asset values to calculate book and tax depreciation.
Since SAP allows to upload only one asset value (Gross book value), I get correct book depreciation value but incorrect value for tax depreciation as the tax depreciation is calculated based on gross book value instead of net book value (gross book value less accumulated depreciation value).
    For Eg
    FOR THE FIRST YEAR
    BOOK DEPRECIATION:
    Asset Value = 1000
    Depreciation Method : SLM
    Depreciation rate is 10%
    Depreciation Amount = 100
    TAX DEPRECIATION:
    Asset Value = 1000
    Depreciation Method : DIMINISHING METHOD
    Depreciation rate is 15%
    Depreciation Amount = 150
    FOR THE SECOND YEAR
    BOOK DEPRECIATION:
    Asset Value = 1000
    Depreciation Method : SLM
    Depreciation rate is 10%
    Depreciation Amount = 100
    TAX DEPRECIATION:
    Asset Value = 850
    Depreciation Method : DIMINISHING METHOD
    Depreciation rate is 15%
    Depreciation Amount = 127.5
KINDLY LET ME KNOW HOW TO UPLOAD THE PAST DATA WITH TWO DIFFERENT ASSET VALUES (IE 1000 & 850)  FOR THE ABOVE.

  • Is there any substitute for book publication?

We are currently running BPC Microsoft version and considering migrating to the Netweaver platform.  I understand the Book Publication Wizard is not available in Netweaver.  We use this feature to generate lengthy reports and losing it would make reporting a very difficult process.  Does anyone know of a workaround or substitute for Book Publication?

    Hi Barb,
You are correct it won't generate PDF's.
Are you considering going to BPC 7.5 NW? If so there are some workarounds that could be leveraged but they are not ideal.
For example if you have Crystal Reports as well, you can use the integration to pull your BPC data into a formatted Crystal Report and use the PDF scheduling to generate your "books" in that way.
Otherwise as Jeff mentioned you would have to leverage the Distributor and Collector and print to pdf via some type of task scheduler job but this  would require you have either Adobe Professional or some PDF generator like PDF XChange.

  • Capture Sharpening for Canon 1Ds II

Hi.  I have been away from my photography for some time and am slowly coming back up to speed on things new.  For now my focus is on capture sharpening for images shot with my 1Ds II.  Previously I used Photokit with variable results and an action combining Smart Sharpen and the sharpen feature embedded in Reduce Noise.  (I had, in fact, had a number of discussions with Bruce Fraser a long time back about the results I was getting with Photokit and the 1Ds II. It was my disappointment with the results from Photokit that led to a preference for the results of the SS/RN action.)
I've just read the following thread with interest:
    http://forums.adobe.com/click.jspa?searchID=250337&objectType=2&objectID=1207380
It seems things have moved along a lot.  I currently have CS3 (ACR 4.6, the latest I believe).  My question is have things have moved on beyond the discussion contained in the above thread? I am not focused, at this point, on upscaling/downscaling but rather simply on getting the best full pixel base image.
Is there anything in CS4 (ACR 5.x) which would improve capture sharpening?
(BTW I have previously used Photozoom to upscale.  The thought of scaling in ACR seems incompatible with then image-editing independent of output size so that the final work can then be output to any desired size at any point in time.)
Finally, for output sharpening I used Photokit.  I have not yet purchased Lightroom. I have yet to fully evaluate the benefits although these seem to be purely workflow oriented rather than 'functional'. One thing in the above thread piqued my interest though and since it's related I will ask: are there significant advantages to output sharpening in Lightroom versus Photokit?
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    Steve Kale wrote:
Only if one can get an image to final output satisfaction are they useful.  I suspect that's a minority of cases but maybe ACR has developed way beyond my current impression.
Well, I guess you haven't downloaded the demo and actually used ACR 5 yet huh? Many, many photographers find with the addition of local tone/color control the numbers of images that MUST go through Photoshop has been drastically cut. So, for those people who can do most everything in ACR, there's the useful ability to do output sharpening. Very handy when you are doing a batch save of a bunch f images intended for a web page or prints at a lab. The only caveat is that for the output sharpening to be effective, you must be able to spec the final size in ACR. That's a bit crude at the moment but should improve in the future...
As for Photoshop having output sharpening as well...I don't disagree...but that's a separate business issue that I can't really get into. Hopefully we will be able to work something out down the road.
The issue with Advanced B&W printing is an Epson issue to fix...it can't be fixed by Adobe (or at least shouldn't be). However, it works just fine if you use intentional double color management and set the CS4 to handle color management and send the driver Adobe RGB (as the output profile) and then also set the driver to Advanced B&W. This works for CS4 and Lightroom 2.x.

  • Looking for some creative guidelines for book formatting

I am formatting a book, my first one, and am about to start refining the overall formatting to make it look beautiful. I'm running into a bit of a creative block, and am looking for some basic guidelines for book formatting. I'm wondering about fonts, how many to use, ideas about heading heiarchy's, fonts for tables relative to the rest of my text, etc.  I have everthing formatted, but it just looks ackward and ugly because I don't have a sensitivity to the standards.
Does anyone know of a resource where I could find some guidance on this?

  • Looking for books published using iBooks Author

I'm looking for books published with iBooks Author and there's no way to search for this in the store as far as I know. If you've published a book using IBA, please post the link in the comments. Thank you

I´m thinking about what size of the text I should use.
Right now I have size 16 Palatino and small blocks of text so it should be easy to read
My experience is this: 16 point text looks (and is experienced as) standard print text in books.
Here's a trick for iPad vermisilitude I use on my iMac with 1920 x1080 resolution: In iBooks Author I set the screen to "Fit Page" and then resize the screen manually to 92%. This very closely matches an iPad screen. In my case, it helps with selecting fonts.
    All the best.

P.S. This would be better in a new forum.

  • Searching for books in the bookstore

Is it possible to configure the iBooks with some keywords on the apple book store?   Currently they do not show up in search results when some specific keyword searches are used.  Or would I have to make sure these keywords appear in the books description for the books to appear?

    K T wrote:
I said to 'focus' on those areas. If there was no consequence to what the descriptions say, there would be no point in having them.
Well, the OP was about keywords for search results and, as far as I can tell, the description has no influence on search in the store. It seems that only title, subtitle, and author are considered in a search.
If you feel the process is flawed, feel free to send feedback, etc.
Search is currently very limited in the store, compared to other distributors, such as Amazon. In fact, every time I use the store, I find that the experience is really clunky in comparison.
As well, look into Chomp - it's coming online in the store now.
It would be good if the store had smarter search technology. Right now, I don't believe it's being used for books.

  • Plug-in for books

I have downloaded a plug-in from a third party for books, but can'rt figure how to get it installed or to use it.  Graphicstudio is the download

Quit Aperture before you run the installer.
To install your Graphistudio plugin double click the installer disk image. Then click the installer package icon to run the installer.
Your new book layout options now should be available when you select a "Book " theme when editing a book. Graphistudio should appear in the "Non Apple Books" section of the Drop Down menu.
You may have to log off and on again to make the changes recognized by Aperture.
