Sharpening i-photo

i successfulluy used i-photo sharpening for at least a year. it is not a viewing size problem. it does not save sharpening. it does save all other editing. i have made a photo sepia and clicked on done and re-opened it and it will be sepia. move the slider with a photo in edit to blurr the photo as much as possible and click done then re-open it it will no longer be blurred. this is the same for sharpening.
here is how far i have gone. i completely erased my hard drive. (zeroed all sectors) re installed OS 10.3.9 then i-photo from my i-life purchased CD. it still does not save sharpening

I don't know if it's a version, system that is, thing but it works as advertised for me. Do you have the latest Quicktime version installed, 7.1.5? If not you might give that a try. Erasing the HD was definitely overkill as it's more likely an incompatibility issue with either the system or maybe just your account.
Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you can successfully sharpen/blur a file. If so then the next step would be to create a new, temporary library in your primary account and try there. Give those a try and post back with the results.
I know that sometimes slight sharpening is not visible unless you bring up the image in iPhoto's separate edit window and enlarge to 100%. But if you can see some obvious blurring then that step is probably not necessary.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How can I sharpen all photos in a gallery at one time?

I want to sharpen all of my photos in a gallery at one time. How do I do this? In Lightroom, you can sync....can I do this on Aperture?

I don't disagree ... .  I tested LR3, Ap3, and C1Pro5 for some large projects, and settled on Aperture because it's organization tools were a whole level deeper than LR's (at the time, C1P had none), and I prefered the interface.  I'm no wiz at LR, but I suspect the two are pretty much dead even photo developing tools.  I'm not at all tempted by LR, but I am drawn to C1P for photo developing.  If I didn't have so much time invested in Aperture -- and so many Images under management -- I would look again at C1P now that it claims to be fully integrated with a DAM.
I think Aperture could be easily the best of the lot.  Like you, however, I don't see Apple aiming for "best".
If you like Aperture and want to see it changed in any particular ways, send feedback.  Apple may not respond the way you want -- but they certainly won't respond to things they don't hear.

  • How to sharpen in photos

    <sigh>
Am I correct in thinking that Sharpening is another "feature" that isn't present in Photos?
So if not, not a problem, as you can always do that using an external editor like in dear old iPhoto - except of course you can't, as that's another apparently non-essential feature.
Not to mention screwing up smart folders when imported from iPhoto, not to mention where's "my photo stream", not to mention.. oh, I give up.
So, a week of swearing at Photos later, it looks like it's back to iPhoto while saving up for Lightroom or something else that can do the job properly
As much as I've been an Apple fanboi over the years, I am completely baffled by their approach and attitude here, in what seems merely like a blatant attempt to force people to adopt their tediously slow iCloud subscription service.  In 8 years of Macness, I am now very much thinking that "it just works" no longer applies, and with it, the main reason I moved to Apple in the first place.

    You're welcome
Exactly. All adjustments should be in the default set. The screen of a Mac is large enough for them, other than on the iPhone.

  • Sharpening in ACR has stopped working

I always open files as smart objects. When I sharpen a photo in ACR and open in Photoshop the sharpening doesn't appear; if I reopen in ACR, the changes I have made to radius are there, but the stregnth is zero. I have tried this on numerous photos, and have reset preferences...still the problem exists. The sharpening function used to work. Now what? Thanks!
I'm using a Mac Pro, with the most current version of Photoshop CS4.

There is a setting in ACR that says Apply Sharpening to Preview Only and maybe that is enabled?

  • Camera RAW 6.2 sharpening isn't used when open with Photoshop CS5.

    Greetings,
Lately I've noticed when I sharpen a photo in Camera RAW 6.2, that sharpening isn't carried over when I open it in Photoshop CS5.  It doesn't mater if I open or open as a Smart Object.
Also, I don't know weather this is associated or not, some adjustments don't appear to take effect.  Color or detail adjustments don't seem to take affect.

  • Photo dimension more than 4000x4000 pixel

Hello , I have a question to the employees of the Pixel Bender Photoshop PlugIn . Is there a real chance for the near future  to make Pixel Bender Photoshop PlugIn able to work with filters on photos wich have more than 4000x4000 pixel-dimension . Most of the semiprofessional or professional DSLR today make photos with higher dimensions .
I will buy the new Sony A65 - and there will be photos with the following dimensions :
    Still Image Size 16:9 :    L size: 6000 x 3376 (20M)M size: 4240 x 2400 (10M)S size: 3008 x1688 (5.1M)
    Still Image Size 3:2  :    L size: 6000 x 4000 (24M)M size: 4240 x 2832 (12M)S size: 3008 x 2000 (6M)
I think that it can't be the solution for all users of such a modern DSLR to take photos only in 'S size' or reducing the image dimensions in Photoshop to max.4000pixel . I buyed me the Pixel Bender Filter 'PSKiss Edge Gear' for sharpen my photos (over the GPU from the graphic-card) but it works only on photos with max. 4000 pixel ( I tested this on photos with different dimensions ). I had Email-contact with an employee of PSKiss and he said that it is because of the restrictions from the Pixel Bender PlugIn to max. picture dimensions of 4000x4000 pixel.
The hardware (CPU,GPU,RAM,VRAM) of todays computers has no problems to handle bigger photos in graphic-software like photoshop but I think too the
'bottle-neck' for this problem are the dimension-restrictions  from the Pixel Bender Photoshop PlugIn. I would be great if you have a solution for this in near future.

Thank you for your prompt answer to my question. Your informations are very interesting and very helpful for me.I heard  here for the first time from the 128MB textur size limit and your right - this is a much more better solution than the 4000x4000 pixel limit for the most users. I just tryed to work with my 'PSKiss EdgeGear'-Pixel Bender Filter in Photoshop CS5 v.12.0.4x64 to big pictures of my friends Sony A850 (they have 6048x4032 pixel and are 45-65MB as 8-bit .Tif) and it works fine. From the internet I downloaded testfotos taken with the new Sony A77 (it has the same picture size as the Sony A65 I will buy - 6000x4000 pixel ). I converted the 24,6MB (*.arw)-Raw to 8-bit .Tif (68,6MB)
and here also the EdgeGear-Filter works fine. Finally I can say - thank you for your work and this 128MB limit in Photoshop CS5. I can good live with it . OK - we cannot work on 16-bit .Tif  taken with a Sony A850/A900 or the new Sony A65/A77 because they have more than 128MB (about 166MB or 137MB) but because of your answer I'm hopefully waiting for the next release of your Pixel Bender Photoshop-PlugIn .Good luck for testing - and may the limits fall.

  • Iphoto book sharpening for print

    Hello everyone:
I am planning on sending an iPhoto album to print to Apple. I have one doubt regarding my final workflow step, which is the output sharpening: using either Aperture3  or Capture NX2 what are the most appropriate output sharpening values ana metods (for printing of course) to get a properly sharpened output and not a flat result or one that is oversharpened and may contain halos and other artefacts? Are techs from Apple applying any sharpening algorithms to the albums before printing?
If any of you have experince with this, I wait for your feedback.
    Cheers!

Do you plan to sharpen each photo in the book with Aperture or Capture NX2?  Unless you see photos which have obvious reasons for sharpening there's really nothing you need to do.  Just make sure none of the pictures have the Adobe RGB color profile.
iPhoto creates a PDF file of the book for uploading and printing.  You can preview that PDF file by Control-clicking on the background of the All Pages window and selecting Preview Book from the contextual menu.
You can save the preview to compare to the book when you receive it.
    Happy New Year

  • Photoshop CS4 no display preview for Smart Sharpen after making adjustments

I just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 which seems to work fine except for the preview window in Smart Sharpen and Unsharp Mask. I get a preview display when using the sharping tools after I open a photo but if I make adjustments such as Levels or Curves the preview window is blank. It's recommended to sharpen a photo after all other adjustments and effects are applied. I can't see how sharp I'm making the image and if I'm getting any noise. Adobe said it was a problem with the driver with the graphics card and to call apple for an update. Apple says it doesn't have an update. Does anyone know a work around? Adobe had me throw away preferences and uncheck open GL. Neither worked.

  • Selective SHARPEN (more powerful)

    Hello,
I am a relatively new LR 2.1rc Mac user (from PS/ACR) and so far love the app! But my biggest hindrance are the limited selective sharpening tools available.
Say I have a photo slightly out of focus. In PS I can use SmartSharpen (or even USM), with a very wide range of radius / amount / etc. to almost always salvage the picture. Since it's fairly strong I always use a layer mask to limit its effects only to where it's needed. (eyes on a face, for example)
This weekend I tried this in LR but found it's not possible. The local adjustment brush has Sharpen 0-100, but it's not nearly strong enough AND has no options for me to tweak, like SmartSharpen in PS. It's a shame, because now my workflow must involve trips to PS for selective sharpening. (and I almost always sharpen selectively)
Capture sharpening (in the Detail tab) was getting close but it affects the whole picture, which I don't want. Output sharpening (screen or print on export) also doesn't address this issue. And honestly, I do most sharpening selectively (via layer masks) to avoid unnecessary build-up of noise, so both of these LR options are less useful to me. (the auto-mask in Detail is nice but I would fine-tune areas further in PS)
    Just my humble opinion.
    Thank you for your consideration!

    Quick update:
Without radius control Clarity unfortunately didn't work well. I see it as a local contrast enhancer and didn't help sharpen the photo.
Multiple sharpen masks did allow me to strengthen it, but due to lack of radius control it ended up bringing out high-freq noise. A quick trip to SmartSharpen in PS gave much better results, mainly because I could fine tune the radius to what was necessary.
On a side note - the sharpening in the Detail tab (non-selective) was working quite nicely when I fine tuned the sliders. Bummer you can't mask it.
My conclusion: More flexibility here would be definitely appreciated. I will be forced to go to PS just for selective sharpening, prohibiting what otherwise could be a LR-dominated workflow.
One idea: combine multiple virtual copies with a mask? I made a VC and used the Detail tab to fix the sharpening, and then thought it would be great if I could combine the two (in LR, I know I can export 2 layers to PS and combine there) VCs with a mask.

  • Auto Sharpening Defaults Manual Sharpening Setting

I always thought that Auto Sharpen had a fancy built in algorythm to analyize the photo and apply the appropriate type & amount of sharpening. Here's what the HELP function has to say about it:
The Auto Sharpen command increases clarity or focus without the risk of oversharpening an image.
Sounds good. HOWEVER, If I sharpen a photo using Enhance>Adjust Sharpness and then set the degree of sharpening that I desire, it somehow changes the settings of the auto sharpen tool. The auto sharpen tool defaults to using the same setting used by the manual sharpening. I found this to be true in both Version 6 & 7. Here's how I discovered it.
I had a photo with a lot of motion blur. I used the manual sharpening tool (Enhance>Adjust Sharpness) and played with it a bit. There was too much motion to fix it to my satisfaction, so just for funzies, I set it to maximal values and hit OK. After closing the photo, I opened a new one, did some basic exposure & color adjustments and then used Auto Sharpen. To my suprise, it used the same maximal motion blur settings that I previously set for the last photo, which way oversharpened my photo.
So this leves me wondering, what does Auto Sharpen do anyway? Does it just remember the last manual sharpening setting and apply it without any analysis of the photo?
Any words of wisdom out there?

  • Imported jpeg photos with noise after unsharp mask in photoshop

Hallo, I have this problem with Aperture (last update version). I have some photos in RAW/NEF format, I use Camera Raw for the main adjustment and then I use unsharp mask in photoshop for get sharpening. Photos are saved in jpeg max quality and I import the Jpeg files in Aperture. When I view this photos, for a few seconds photo looks good and sharp (I see loading... indicator). Then photos become blurry and it present a huge noise. If I export one of this photos or I view in Iphoto or in mac Preview, photo is very good. The problem is INSIDE of Aperture. If I don't use unsharp mask (from photoshop), all is ok!!! I tried to import files directly in Iphoto and photos are good.
    Thank you.

What your screenshots are showing, is exactly how the sharpening with "unsharp mask" is supposed to work. It emphasizes any variation of the luminance in the image, including the variance due to noise. The threshold parameter should be used to separate noise from the main edges in the photo. By setting this parameter to 0, you have disabled the noise suppression in this filter, and so the result is very noisy, most noticable in the darker regions of the image, where there are no real edges to be sharpened, only noise.  I'd recommend to set the threshold to a higher value, I usually use 10-20 or so.  My screenshot was computed with a threshold of 15.
But the big question is, why you are not seeing the noise in iPhoto or Preview. Have you pixel-peeped at 100 % in these apps? There must be some kind of filter applied that will reduce the noise that must be present.
Your second question: Why do the jpeg load first as bluury and then gradually become sharper? I only see this happen, when I save the jpegs with the option "Progressive"; this will encode the jpeg in scale-space - a pyramide of images at different resolution. When opening, Aperture will first load the coarse resolution as apreview, and the image will gradually become sharper.

  • PSE 7 for Mac

    Hello,
When is PSE 7 for Mac coming out, roughly? I've heard it it usually 6 months behind the Windows version. Is this still true?
In particular, I'm waiting for the "Auto find faces for tagging" feature. Interestingly, Picasa Web Albums offers this feature too: http://picasa.google.com/features-nametags.html.
    Thanks for any insight.
    Cheers,
    Derek

Tricia and Barbara, thanks so much for the replies. That's a bummer!
I've been looking around for a photo management solution on the Mac that basically:
    - is like Photoshop Album/Photoshop Elements Windows with quick and easy drag and drop tagging and intuitive user interface
    - [KEY] has tags and captions that are written to my files as IPTC or XMP metadata
    - has "auto find faces for tagging" feature like Picasa Web Albums
    - allows full-screen reviewing of images with quick rating/marking of "picks" in that mode
    - can handle 30-60K photos either by allowing me to easy have and manage multiple catalogs
    - can upload to Flickr Pro
    - can batch rename files using flexible variables/tags from EXIF data (like Photo Mechanic)
    - can batch export with variable sharpening (like Photo Mechanic)
I checked out Apple's iPhoto and Aperture, Photo Mechanic, iView Media Pro but none come close to offering the above feature set. Seems to me there are better photo management apps on Windows... PSE 7 and Google's Picasa.
Any suggestions? I suppose I could try using PSE 7 Windows in a Windows VMware virtual machine (or try CrossOver Mac) but then it'll be slow.
Thanks in advance for any additional feedback or advice.
    Cheers,
    Derek

  • How to view an image @ 100% ?

When I do some editing in iPhoto, especially sharpening, I'd like to see it @100%.
There is no indication at what % I'm viewing the image.
Is there any way to know that ?
When clicking "edit" on the bottom, at what size the image opens?
    Thanks!

ok, I found an Apple article from 2007 which explains how to do that. I'm posting it here for others:
    ===================================
iPhoto: Sharpness adjustment may not be apparent when viewing at less than 100 percent
Last Modified on: July 13, 2007
    Article: 301425
When you view an image at less than full size, iPhoto smooths it (a technique known as anti-aliasing) to get rid of artifacts that result from scaling down the photo. The relationship between anti-aliasing and sharpening is a trade-off; although anti-aliasing does not modify the actual image file, it does counter the effect of sharpening when viewing the image at less than full size.
Because of this, if you sharpen a photo, close it, then reopen it again at a less than 100-percent view, you may get the impression that your sharpness changes were not saved. In reality they were, but since the image has been re-aliased to fit your screen, the image's true sharpness may not be apparent.
To evaluate whether an image is sharp or needs sharpening, you should view the photo at 100 percent/full size while editing in a separate window. To open the photo in a separate window, you can either Control-click the image and choose "Edit in a separate window" from the shortcut menu, or change your iPhoto preferences:
From the iPhoto menu, choose Preferences.
In the General pane, locate the preference for "Double-click photo."
Set the radio button to "Opens photo in edit window."
    Close the preferences window.
Now photos will open in a separate window when you double-click them. Once in the separate window, choose 100% from the Size pop-up menu. If you don't see the Size menu, widen the window until it appears.
Tip: If you are editing the photo from one of the other view options, you can press the 1 key to quickly jump to 100 percent view.
Other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, handle anti-aliasing differently, so the degree of apparent sharpness can vary from one application to the next when viewing an image at a scaled-down size. You should see consistency when comparing the image at 100 percent across other applications.

  • Iphoto- sharpness ?

Note: This topic was moved from 'Using Mac OS X.'
Hi , I am new to mac osx. Just a silly question...
When I sharpen a photo in iphoto and I press done, after it saves it reverts back into the original photo. Has iphoto sharpened the photo or not ?.
I cannot see the sharpened photo anywhere. Will it print the original or the photo I edited ? pls help.

    Hey Makk,
I have the same problem, and I don't quite buy the explanation posted on the Mac Help site. I also have a problem when I try to adjust the tint, saturation, etc. It seems to not only revert back to the original levels, but overcompensates in the other direction. If I edit a photo multiple times, I usually get a finished photo that is both blurry and badly tinted. It doesn't make much sense to me that the photo should look different when you hit the Done button. I mean, what's the point of adjusting the levels and using the picture window as a guide if the automatic smoothing function and mystery tint phenomena changes it to something totally different? Does anyone know of a way to turn off these automatic funtions?
