Sharpening in Camera RAW

I'm messing around with sharpening in Camera Raw, is it true that when shooting in Jpeg the digital camera applies sharpening automatically ?
What's happening when shooting with an iphone ? It's true as well ?

Every camera model is a little different, but there is usually in-camera sharpening for JPGs, yes, although some cameras have a way to adjust how much. For a tiny camera like that in an iPhone, I’m sure there are all sorts of lens-geometry corrections, noise-reduction, and sharpening applied before the JPG is created.

Thanks for the reply.
I have now noticed that if I apply a very extreme sharpening in RAW,
it does not notice much, if at all, in Bridge. If I use the loupe in
Bridge or zoom to 100% in the slide show, the sharpening is certainly there.
I would have thought that such extreme sharpening would be noticeable
on a 1920 by 1200 monitor in normal slide show or Bridge view.
Perhaps it is using different previews. The curious thing is that
some of my older images are using Adobe 2003 and these show
sharpening in normal Bridge view.When I convert to Adobe 2010, the
preview is rebuilt and the sharpening is no longer apparent.

When to sharpen in camera raw?

Folks, Is it common procedure to use camera raw to pre sharpen images that you will work over for print, for web? If for web, has anyone found some good numbers? How about for print, or maximum enlargement, tho I know that's way variable. I guess I am looking for the thinking that helps make these decisions. How about after working a file, save to tiff, and then sharp in camera raw for final output instead of smart sharpen?

Really only since Camera Raw 4.1 and above would one really want to do capture sharpening...since you don't mention the CR version, there needs to be that qualification.
As far as the numbers, that all depends on the capture source and the image type. Pretty difficult (read impossible) to give ANY general numbers beyond the defaults...
As far as any further sharpening, that really needs to be done in Photoshop.

I want to do two-pass sharpening - capture and output - with output capture done just before I print. I do the initial (capture) sharpening in the ACR Detail/Sharpening panel, with Amount slider set to, for example, 100. Then, I open the image to PS CS5 as a Smart Object, and use layers and masks for further editting.
My question is, can I go back to ACR for the final (output) sharpening pass? When I re-open the file in ACR, the Sharpening Amount slider is back to zero, but the other three sliders are still at the settings I used at the start of the process, i.e., the capture sharpening. If I again set the Amount slider to a positive value, then again open the image in PS for printing, will my second pass through the ACR Sharpening panel take effect - will it accumulate on top of the initial sharpening?
By the way, the reason I want do output sharpening in ACR rather than, say, PS Unsharp Mask, is so I can use the Masking slider in ACR, which is much easier than the comparable techniques available in PS. I am aware that some say you should not do any masking for the output sharpening. I'd like to though.

This is pretty much the way I do it, and I also always found ACR sharpening superior to anything in Photoshop. There is the "sharpen for output" in ACR, but you have little control over it.
The tricky part is feeding the file through ACR a second time. I don't think re-opening the Smart Object will do anything more than you could have done the first time. I do it with a rendered TIFF, and have an intricate set of actions that I run in the Image Processor Pro. It's a mess, and you don't want to know.
The frustrating part is how to action ACR. I just can't figure it out. It'll work, and then I have to change some setting and the action stops working. I suspect you need a script, but so far I haven't found any.
So I've come to a compromise: I first process to TIFF in a temp folder, then I bulk open them in ACR to sharpen, then a second process to finish up.
For less critical files I have a sharpening action that comes close, involving edge masks and blend ifs, using smart sharpen which tends to preserve edges better than unsharp mask, and with less accumulation of noise.
Bottom line: I'm also very interested in further comments to this. BTW, I recently bought Lightroom 4, so maybe there is a posibility using that in a mixed workflow.

Camera RAW 6.2 sharpening isn't used when open with Photoshop CS5.

Lately I've noticed when I sharpen a photo in Camera RAW 6.2, that sharpening isn't carried over when I open it in Photoshop CS5. It doesn't mater if I open or open as a Smart Object.
Also, I don't know weather this is associated or not, some adjustments don't appear to take effect. Color or detail adjustments don't seem to take affect.

Camera Raw 6.3 crashes when using sharpening masking

On non-SSE2 CPUs (AMD Athlon XP for example) Adobe Camera Raw crashes when changing masking slider in the sharpening tool.
To completely fix this problem, you should install patched Camera Raw plug-in.

While it works just great for me, I can not promise anything.
And note that this is NOT official fix for the problem, it needs to be fixed by developers so it's better to send bug reports.
This solution can be used while there are no better solutions from Adobe.
Just overwrite original plug-in, by default it is located in the: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats
This will fix the problem for all CS5 applications: Photoshop, Bridge, etc because they all use this plug-in.
Sorry, but I will not patch previous versions, so you will need to update Camera Raw to version 6.3 before using patched plug-in.
This problem is present in all Camera Raw 6.x and appears only on non-SSE2 CPUs.

It's been my experience, throughout my 36 year career in computer engineering, that RAM tests almost always succeed even when the RAM has intermittent errors.
Do you have ECC (error correcting) RAM? A system set up to use ECC RAM and with ECC RAM installed will correct some errors as it runs, and will halt and immediately tell you when an uncorrectable RAM error has occurred - which is FAR better than trying to forge ahead with bad data (which will ultimately crash it somewhere). RAM errors happen more often than you'd think, probably because it's the one piece of technology being pushed right to the blistering limits in most computers. Even if the chance of a RAM error is one in a billion, keep in mind that literally billions of RAM reads and writes happen every second.
Every future computer system I'll have will have ECC RAM, as do my current ones.

Can I see sharpening detail like I can in Camera Raw?

A book I have on Camera Raw says that I can preview which areas are being affected when sliders for sharpening are moved by holding down the option key (Mac) and then moving the slider for radius, detail, masking. This shows a window that is gray with just the areas being affected by sharpening showing. Is this feature available in Lightroom?

It works exactly like in camera RAW. Just follow this sequence: Zoom in 1:1 on an area of interest (the B&W-type preview does not work in zoomed-out views), hold you option key and (while holding the key) slide the sliders in sharpening back and forth. You will get the exact same view as you see in ACR.

If you click it, the sharpening will reset to the default. You can do this in all the sections of Develop. Handy if you only want to reset a single section. You can always double click on the name of the slider to have just that slider reset to default.

Camera Raw will not assist in sharpening

Camera raw used to have a feature in the sharpening menu where pressing the 'alt/option' key while sliding the sharpening 'amount' would grayscale the image and make it much easier to view what was being sharpened. Has this feature been removed or have the shortcut keys changed? Thanks!

Sharpening applied in Camera Raw not showing when opened in Photoshop - CS5

Has anyone come across this problem. I have a bunch of files I have processed in camera raw, but when I open them the sharpening is not applied. This wasn't happening yesterday. Is there a bug? Am I missing something?

There is a camera raw preference whether to apply sharpening to the on-screen view only, or also to the exported files.
You probably inadvertently set it to screen-only and now after resetting, the default is both.

Help! Thumbnail + files lose Sharpening done in Camera Raw

I sharpen an image in Camera Raw... Looks great. I save it as a JPG to my ext HD. I open and thumbnail previews and file lose the sharpening I applied. Looks terrible. Reinstalled whole Design Premium. Didn't work.

Am I to understand you expect your thumbnail previews to be sharpened the same as your images? These things are generally at two completely different scales. Sharpening that affects a radius of 1 or 2 pixels in a 3000+ pixel image won't have much visible effect at 800 pixels.
A preview is just that - a preview. You should not expect to gauge the sharpening of the actual image by the sharpness of the preview generated. Image sharpening settings have to do with the development of the image, not the generation of the preview.
I think perhaps you're actually trying to solve a problem where you'd like to see more detailed previews on your monitor, e.g., in Filmstrip mode in Bridge, or for a slideshow. Have you tried investigating the different preview options in Bridge?
Also, something else to look at: In Bridge, choose Edit - Preferences - Advanced... Try checking the following setting, remembering to purge the cache afterward in order to cause the preview regeneration.

Any chance Photoshop itself will get Camera Raw's noise reduction and sharpening?

I would love to have the noise reduction and sharpening from ACR 6 in Photoshop itself for JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files. Yes, I know I can open those files in ACR, apply noise reduction and sharpening, and then have it then open the files to Photoshop. But it would be so nice if we could do that without having to go through Camera Raw.

Photoshop noise reduction filter has a basic preserve detail slider which I presumes does some kind of masking but this is not as good at ACR masking and third paty masking. You can of course add you own masking before using photoshop noise reduction filter. Sharpening also needs masking for sarpening will sharpen noise as well as detail.
IMO your better off with third party plug-ins that are designed to be the best. They keep getting better there is no clear winner for all images. I'm been satisfied with NeatImage and I have only had to pay for two upgrades. I had to pay for the addition the 32 bit plugin then and for the addition a 64 bit plugin. All other updates to NeatImage has been free of charge even the lates version 7 of the 64 bit plugin was no charge for me.

Camera Raw Sharpening Settings for Landscapes

Would anyone be so kind as to tell me if they have their own preferred sharpening (Detail) settings for sharpening landscapes in Camera Raw, and what these settings are.
Also if you have sharpening settings for other photographs I would also be very grateful for them. Maybe there is a guide out there that gives suggested sharpening parameters for the Detail tab that someone may know of?

The short answer is to dial in what looks right. Sometimes that's NO sharpening. Only experience will tell you what will work best in YOUR post processing workflow. You have to experiment some to arrive at your own best practices.
May I suggest some additional things that I've found to be useful:
1. Convert to a resolution higher than the native camera photosite count. In other words, if you're shooting a 10 MP camera, convert to the 17 MP size.
2. Determination of a good conversion sharpening value will depend on what you're going to do with an image. You might, for example, choose to dial in a LOT of sharpening during conversion if you're going to immediately downsize an image greatly for web display. Or you might dial in very little if you have a sophisticated sharpening tool you're going to use later.

camera raw filter keeps adding sharpening when I open the image although there are no presets and all sharpening sliders set to zero- this doesn't happen with the same set up on my imac- Ps cc 2014 osx 10.9.5- can anyone help me turn this off, I've reloaded and update the Ps cc 2014

Thanks for the reply - the problem isn't with ACR itself but the new Camera Raw filter available in photoshop CC 2014 in the filters selection, this doesn't seem to include the workflow options that you get at the bottom of the normal ACR window- it's a really handy filter for quick final adjustments but on my Macbook keeps adding sharpening even when the sliders are at zero. Is there a workflow option menu for this filter ? Something strange going on somewhere- thanks again for the reply , Tom

Sharpening Portraits in Camera Raw

Would anyone be so kind as to give me some guidance on what sharpening settings (Amount, Radius, Detail, Masking) I should use in Camera Raw when editing PORTRAIT NEF RAW images from my Nikon D90?

Can't give you numbers for that camera but I can give general guidance...
For portraits you'll want a larger radius as opposed to smaller so think 1.2-1.5. Then, Detail will prolly want to be lower than the 25 default. You WILL want an edge mask...how much is a matter of taste. Be sure to use a bit of luminance noise reduction even if you are well exposed at low ISO. Most images benefit from 5-15 reduction. The Amount setting should be set so the image regains the sharpness lost by digital capture and AA filters. Don't try to sharpen for "effect'...all you want is to have the image "look good" at 100% zoom.

Getting Camera RAW 4.1 to leave things alone

Maybe there is a direct answer to this question somewhere on the forum, but I have been searching without much luck. Maybe someone has a concise answer out there...
How do I get Camera RAW 4.1 to USE all of my in camera settings, and then how do I most effectively open those files into PS3 for image processing (changing them into PSD) for any editing they may need?
My images are what I am looking for when they come out of the camera, and when I preview them in Bridge. It's only when the NEFs get opened into camera RAW 4.1 that they lose all their settings, and thus saturation, depth, contrast, etc.
I have heard about saving settings and profiles, but I am talking about thousands of photos in each shoot, with wildly different elements to them all. I work hard to make sure most everything is well set and executed in the camera when I shoot, so it is disheartening to have to "edit" which seems to mean just re-build everything I originally captured via in camera settings. Furthermore, it seems that this editing is very time consuming and rarely matches what I see if the previews.
I just want ACR's converter to not assume I didn't pay any attention to my in camera settings, and that I want to actually "edit" each photo in its interface. Thanks ahead of time for any help or suggestions that you might have. If it helps, I am shooting with D200s and D70s.

Camera manufacturers, Canon and Nikon in particular, perform in-camera RAW to JPEG conversions designed to generate the over-saturated, over-contrasty and over-sharpened images that appeal to most amateurs.
Their stand-alone RAW conversion software also performs the same conversion to your RAW images.
Noise is also hidden by compressing the shadows so you don't see much of the noise inherent in the image.
Adobe Camera Raw, ACR, on the other hand, comes with default settings designed to give you the most detail possible (even if this sometimes means revealing some of the noise hidden by the camera manufacturers in their RAW conversion software), as well as the most natural images.
That being said, you can calibrate your camera to ACR and come up with your own settings to produce exactly what you want, including the JPEG-look of the camera manufacturer, and save that as your profile.
The key is to learn how to use ACR properly and to calibrate your camera to ACR.
