Sharpening in Lightroom and/or Photoshop

It appears to me that I can obtain all necessary sharpening, including improved midtone contrast (normally obtained with the High Pass Filter in Photoshop) using the tools available in Lightroom 2.4.
I am considering the following Lightroom only workflow:  1.  Capture sharpen using Sharpening and Clarity.  2.  Local sharpening using the Adjustment Brush.  3.  Output sharpening using the appropriate module for the output.
Given this workflow, are there any reasons to use Photoshop for sharpening?  What can Photoshop do that Lightroom cannot do when sharpening photographic images?
Thank you.

Procedure is to apply global sharpening optimised for high frequency then send this image to Photoshop as a Smart Object. In Photoshop you create another smart object using the first as the master (i.e. Layer>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy). This Smart Object will have the same sharpening parameters as the master (i.e. the one created by Lightroom). Double click the smart object to open in Camera Raw. Adjust sharpening parameters for low frequency areas then close Camera Raw (Click OK). The new smart object will be obscuring the underlying high frequency smart object. Next we create a Layer Mask (first select low frequency layer) by holding down Alt/Option key then click on Layer Mask button at bottom of Layers panel. Select your brush, adjust to size, adjust opacity to around 30 to 50% (lower is probably better) and begin to brush away mask to expose underlying high frequency smart object.

I do not understand why using the LR adjustment brush to brush in sharpening is different from brushing in sharpening on a layer mask in PS.
Adjustment Brush uses the parameters as the Detail panel, so you're going to have a hard time getting values that are appropriate for both high and low frequency sharpening. If Eric drops by he may provide more info on the Detail panel link to Adjustment Brush.

  • Capture vs. Content Sharpening in Lightroom and ACR

    Hi,
    I have a question regarding sharpening in Lightroom and ACR. In the information I have read, many authors point out that Lightroom and ACR's detail panel is optimized to provide control over capture sharpening. In a post that I read recently by Jeff Schewe, he clarified that and said that we are really sharpening for both capture and content with the detail panel in Lightroom.
    That is confusing to me because after reading Bruce Fraser's book on sharpening, capture and content sharpening were treated as two different processes. If I understood correctly capture sharpening for digital captures was based on the characteristics of the camera and the file size of the image, with larger megapixel files receiving a smaller radius. In addition, I read that the radius in content sharpening is dictated by the dominant characteristics of the subject matter being sharpened, with high frequency subject matter receiving a smaller radius and low frequency receiving a higher radius.
    The reason I am confused is that it appears that capture and content sharpening for the same digital capture can at times be quite different. For example, I believe that the book suggests a radius for an 11 megapixel capture of .4. If the image content calls for a sharpening radius of 1.3, what do I do? In Lightroom/ACR I can only choose 1 radius.
    In all the reading I have done regarding the proper use of Lightroom and ACR, it suggest that you should use a radius that is suited to the image content. So it appears that we are that we are being encouraged to perform content sharpening only with Lightroom and ACR. What happened to the "capture" sharpening portion of the process?
    Since Lightroom and ACR are capable of recognizing the camera make and model as well as the file size, are they applying capture sharpening behind the scenes that is tailored to that specific camera and file. If not, then how are we achieving both capture and content sharpening in the same operation?
    Sharpening for both capture and content in one pass would seem to conflict with some of the basic concepts elaborated on in Bruce Fraser's book. I am assuming that since Lightroom is using Photokit Sharpener routines, that they have accounted for the capture portion of the sharpening, but I don't see that stated explicitly anywhere in anything that I have read. If they have, I say kudos to everyone involved as that would be great. I'm just looking for a clearer understanding of what's happening.
    If anyone can shed some light on this topic I would be very appreciative.
    Thanks,
    John Arnold

    The answer is that the detail section crosses over into creative territory and is not strictly "capture sharpening," although that is what is mostly meant to do.
    Following the ultimate logic of the "sharpening workflow" might make you conclude that Capture sharpening and output sharpening are purely scientific steps where you should not make ANY creative decision at all and that creative decisions are only to be made in the creative sharpening step. In the real world, there are creative decisions and decisions determined by the content matter that enter into the capture step too just like in the output step. You might like extra-crunchy prints for example, but somebody else might prefer softer prints making you approach the output sharpening with a creative intent. The sharpening workflow was probably (Jeff will know more about the history) more of an attempt to arrive at a more rational way of approaching the process and to provide a guideline. It is probably not meant to rigidly separate the workflow up in defined steps where in the 1st step you're not allowed to think or look at the image, in the second step you can go completely wild, and in the last step you have to close your eyes again. The goal was probably to make the photographer realize that the different steps have a different purpose. Not to make you turn off your creative genius or to treat the process like a black box.
    My approach to this, inspired in some part by Jeff's many posts on this, is to make the image look good at 1:1 using the detail tool in Lightroom/ACR. This is inherently driven by content of course as you use visual feedback. If your image is large swaths of plain color separated by sharp transitions with little structure, you probably do not want a high setting on the detail slider as you might induce halos and you probably want to use some masking. Conversely, if you shoot brick architecture, a high detail value might look good. If you shot at high ISO, you might need a different approach again to not blow up noise. Also, portraits might need a different approach. After the 1:1 optimization, I sometimes selectively sharpen (or blur!) parts of the image (rare but can be effective - example would be people's eyes). Then for the output step I use appropriate output sharpening for the medium according to my taste. You see that this is not rigidly following the workflow, but still is in the spirit.

  • Uninstall lightroom and reinstall photoshop

    I got on my computer to use my Photoshop program and it was gone! It was replaced by Lightroom. I figured it was an update to Photoshop and I installed it. I absolutely HATE it and want my Photoshop back!!!! How do I go about uninstalling Lightroom and re-install Photoshop? I already pay for Photoshop... why did it change?

    A Lightroom update will not update Photoshop. I don't know what you did, but unless you installed Photoshop intentionally it should be on your computer still. There is no way that a Photoshop  update would replace Photoshop with Lightroom. You must have left out some information.

  • Is the MacBook Air recommended for working with RAW photographs using Aperture or Lightroom and perhaps Photoshop?

    Is the MacBook Air recommended for working with RAW photographs in Aperture and Photoshop, or do I need a more powerful MacBook ?   The relative lack of weight of the AIr is what attracts me to it.

    For doing Photography with RAW files in either Aperture or Photoshop, the new MacBook Air is fine, but for Photoshop CS6 some of the filters and plugins really need a better graphics card and plenty of RAM.
    You'll also want an external disk if you are going to be doing lots of shooting.
    Summary:
    Yes, you can use an air but you'll want external storage and at least 8GB of ram.
    Or go MacBook Pro with 16GB ram with the 650M card.

  • How are Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe Lightrom different

    Hi,

    Appreciate the help!!!

    Quote "No-one but Adobe understands why Adobe insists on referring to Lightroom as both Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom."
    Up to a few months before Lightroom was released in the market and still in "Beta" mode the decision was made to change the name from "Adobe Lightroom" to "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom". This was a poor decision on Adobe's part and has led to confusion to what Lightroom is as a product.
    Lightroom is in effect an alternative to "Bridge and the Adobe Camera Raw Plugin" that is available for the use in Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements.
    Lightroom is not Photoshop and the inclusion of the name only causes confusion.

    Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 are standalone products. Each comes with its own Elements Organizer 11. When both are on the same computer they share the same Elements Organizer 11 catalog. Consequently, Premiere Elements 11 will continue to have its Elements Organizer 11 even if you uninstall Photoshop Elements 11.
    Lightroom is also a standalone product. Any questions about Photoshop Elements and Lightroom integration should be directed to the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Forum Photoshop Lightroom   and Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum Photoshop Elements
    Please let us know if I have targeted your question about all this relating to Premiere Elements.

  • What can Lightroom do that Photoshop 5 cannot do?

    I already purchased Photoshop 5 and have started trying to learn how to use it. In the box I found a discount certificate for Lightroom. I expected Photoshop to be comprehensive enough that it would include Elements, Lightroom, etc. Is this not the case?

    There is a lot of overlap between Lightroom and Bridge+Photoshop.
    If you need common access (i.e. you work on photos as a team), I'd suggest Bridge+Photoshop, if edits are done by one person, you may prefer Lightroom's local catalog.
    Both have the same core develop features (as provided by Adobe Camera Raw), but Lightroom has some value added, and some people prefer Bridge...
    There are many threads (and a tutorial by J.Kost) comparing the two workflows, but I've no links for you.
    PS - some of my favorite Lr features (not in Photoshop) are:
    * edit history
    * before/after compare
    * publishing
    * plugins

  • Sharpening in PS3 and lightroom

    Hi,
    After sharpening in PS3 with the intent of printing from Lightroom, what should the settings be regarding the sharpening in Lightroom? Still on high? How does the Lightroom sharpening affect the sharpening done in PS3, if in fact something is happening? Thanks again!

    John,
    Good question. You may already be very aware of the following, but for those who may not be, the sharpening tools in Lr are MEANT to be used as the first stage in a two or three step process, as outlined by Bruce Fraser in his book, RealWorld Camera Sharpening with Adobe CS2. Jeff Schewe, a close friend and collaborator with the late Mr. Fraser, has explained the whole thing both online in Lr tutorials and here on the forum.
    Bruce taught three stage sharpening:
    1) Capture, where you overcome the problems inherent in digital sensors and Bayer algorithms (this is what LR's sharpening is designed to do and does quite well);
    2) Creative, where you select specific areas to do sharpening with the settings appropriate for that area, including "de"-sharpening some areas if useful (done in Photoshop or your other full-pixel-editing program of choice);
    3) Output, sharpening designed to match the image to the specific output use, whether "online" or printed, and dependent if printed upon the specific size of the image to be output on the specific printing device. This last stage, also probably done with your chosen pixel editor, is done only for that specific print and you might choose not to save this as your "final" of that image.
    As you can see, the problem with printing from Lr is that it is not really designed to do the output sharpening ... but still, once you understand the tools it does fairly well, for smaller prints at least. I think you'll have to test what it does to an image already sharpened in CS3, and let us know what it does.
    I think, as Nicolas suggested, that if the Lr staff includes a printing module and expects us to actually use it, they might include a separate tutorial on this specific useage of the sharpening tools.
    For anyone who hasn't seen it, PLEASE go online and find Jeff's tutorial on the sharpening features of Lr and how to use them.

  • Printing: Lightroom and Photoshop

    Ok...so today I tried to run my first print since getting lightroom. Quick run down on my color management (although I am still learning on this subject as well). My monitor is calibrated with an eye one display. My camera (Canon 300D) is set to AdobeRGB profile. I am running an Epson 2400, Ilford Smooth Pearl paper, with the profile provided from Ilford, and have it set to have the printer determine colors. And I am running Lightroom and Photoshop CS2.
    I have been printing with this combonation beautifully for about a year now. I do have one small thing about my setup, even calibrated, my monitor is a little dark, so I must do a small curves adjustment on my final version to get the print to be perfect. I have accepted this (not the newest or best monitor) and just set an action to run before printing.
    So, today, I tried to print from Lightroom. The print came out WAY too dark...I mean, my blue sky is a dark purple...odd. So I said, well I need this print, let me move it to photoshop, drop the curve and print from there. Well...the blue came out blue, but the image is still a little dark...I will play with the curve again to see if I can get it right. I don't have a problem with doing this for now, but I am wondering why the images are darker then they used to be, even in photoshop.
    Also, can I create actions in Lightroom, something like develop presets that I can run AFTER I am done working on an image that we prep the document for print?
    Sorry for the long post...thanks for any help...

    So...you're using the canned profile from Ilford...and in Lightroom you've added that via "Other" correct? When you select that profile you are then using Lightroom color management and then you go into the Epson driver under Properties, Mode Custom and then select Off under Color Management, right? You've also selected the correct media that Ilford reccomends with the Pearl paper?
    If you hit print from there than that should take care of it. Note however that if you change the page template, it _WILL_ change the print output settings making you update to the profile again.
    So far, I get equal output results from Lightroom and Photoshop CS2/3 when using the same profile and printing under Mac or Win. So, if you are _NOT_ getting the same results, your settings are not equal-something somewhere is set incorrectly.

  • Color change on exporting from lightroom and saving in Photoshop CS5

    I have been having issues with my pictures with color management.    I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5.  I thought over the last 2 years that it was just me.   I have bought a Eizo monitor with a hood, calibrate with a i1display pro, painted my walls gray, updated my strobes from alien bees to elinchrome bxri's.   Updated my sekonic meter to a L 758.   Have done custom white balance with gray card, expodisc, xrite kits.   The problem has been over the years when I work on a picture in lightroom and export it as jpeg or adobe rgb it gets saved to my external hardrive and the colors are really bad !!   You can go back and compare the picture in lightroom to the picture on my iomega external drive and there is a significant difference.   I do some animal photography and I had a dog that had brown fur and when I export it out of lightroom the dogs fur is actually a bright very orange color.  Same thing happens with skin tones.     When I import the photos into lightroom the pictures look ok.       The same thing is happening when I go from lightroom to photoshop the picture color looks good but when I go to File-save as - tiff or jpeg the colors are changing.   It does not matter what color space I am in I have tried them all it is still happening.    If anyone has any insight that would be great.

             Thanks everyone for the help.   I have only been doing photography for about 2 years and the color managment part has been my hardest thing to get right.   My monitor ColorEdge CG243W LCD.   Wide color gamut of 98%.  Has a sensor on front of monitor that detects ambient brightness but this will only work if you are in a custom color mode.  Modes are: custom,  sRGB,DCI,EBU, Cal1.   I use the Cal 1 to be able to use the Colornavigator software that came with the monitor.  You also have to be in custom color mode to be able to manually adjust brightness, contrast, temperature on the monitr itself which I do not use because I use the Cal 1 mode.   I was not sure about the digital input signals.   I am on the DVI-I in which this allows digital signal input and analog signal input.    There is a DVI-D mode that allows only digital input only.    Also did not know if I needed to be concerned about setting the frequency that corresponds to the grahic board in the monitor ?    My bandwith was set to normal and now is on wide.   My digital input is for 1920x1200 resolution.   Appicable signal is Vesa CVT RB.  Frequency is 60 Hz.   Yes I did call Eizo twice last year when I got my monitor and did not get very far.     I have also called and spoke to a color specialist at my lab and told him the problems I have been having and he just told me to leave everything in sRGB.   Well I would like to get the most from my monitor's color gamut and when working on my pictures so that is why I am still determined to get this figured out.
    I use the i1 Dislpay Pro hardware to calibrate with and the ColorNavigator software.     When calibrating.   I go to create a new target---select enter manually--Gamut ( monitor native--states recommended)--Brightness 100cd---White point (6500k)--set black level (recommemded states mininum 0.2)---gamma 2.20---priority (set automatically to standard, this adjusts gray balance while maintaining the contrast)---then I hit calibrate and it goes through the process.   The results I get are:                                            Target                                               Result
                          Brightness                                        100cd                                              99.9cd

  • I only bought Lightroom and Photoshop subscription but it appears the cloud overwrote all my other old programs and is now demanding a new serial

    Hi,
    I joined the subscription service but ONLY purchased Lightroom and Photoshop.  I had other legally aquired adobe programs on my computer that I was perfectly happy with (dreamweaver - I olnly do the bare minimum of stuff with it, i write my own code mostly - therefore did not need an upgrade)...now it seems Adobe has taken it upon itself to update ALL of my programs to the newest versions and will not let me use any of my stuff until I pay for a new serial for ALL of it.  I can't even read a PDF all of a sudden, because i magically have the newest version of Acrobat, which I NEVER asked for....
    So they basically used my membership and HACKED my computer and updated software - I say hacked because these updates were without my permission...and now they are trying to force money out of me?????  This should be ILLEGAL!  this was a really really really crappy thing to do, since I DO NOT have the money to buy serials for all this other software.  THANKS A LOT FOR SCREWING ME.  would you please now HACK my computer again and fix this????  I should not be forced to update all my software if I DO NOT WANT TO!
    If Adobe does not remedy this I will cancel everything and find other stuff to use.  Too bad, because I prefer this software, but there is always another alternative...
    FIX THIS!!!!!
