Sharpening in LR4 and CS5

I  shoot RAW with Nikon cameras and use both LR4 and CS5 for post-processing.
My question is about sharpening in LR4 and/or CS5.
Can I do sharpening in LR4 and then again in CS5 by "Edit in Photoshop CS5"?
I recently read an article descrbing that in case we do sharpening in CS5, it did not recommend re-sharpening in CS5.
Could someone advise me which approach is the best for sharpening images between LR4 and/or CS5?

Big question, and one with a lot of answers and also a lot of differing opinions (certainly in forums!). My take, having studied this aspect of image processing a great deal over the past couple of years (this assumes you're shooting in raw):
Break up your sharpening into two (or three) stages. Two of them are key - capture and output sharpening:
- Capture sharpening. Sharpen in the Develop module of LR to "bring back" sharpness lost during the process of capturing the image and converting it into a digital form. Sharpness is lost during the conversion, and also due to the anti-moire (or anti-aliaising) filter that typically is present in most digital cameras (there are some expections, the only Nikon one without this filter is the new D800E), and the Bayer colour filter. The capture process robs some of the sharpness from the image (even when using top-end gear), and you need to recover that in Develop: this is specifically what the controls there are designed for. Note that in-camera sharpness settings have zero effect in LR. Note also that the beauty of being able to do this in LR is that you can tailor the sharpening to your particular image attributes. IMO, capture sharpening is a vital part of any post processing workflow.
- Creative sharpening. Optional (don't do this very often myself, but as with all things, that depends on the image), but you can do this if you want to emphaise a part of your image (the classic example that tends to get rolled out is a portrait where you may wish to add additonal sharpening to the eyes). This can, and generally should, be done in PS (in theory you can do it in LR using the adjustment brush, but from my experience that doesn't tend to give the best results.
- Output sharpening. This should be done at the very end of the process to an image that has been re-sized to it's final output dimensions (so for example if it's for a print, set up the print dimensions/ratio and the ppi before output sharpening). Furthermore, output sharpening depends greatly on the output device: print sharpening will typically need more (and use a different "thickness") than screen sharpening (for web viewing, etc). LR has built-in capture sharpening (available in Export and the Print module) which I'm finding to be very good, but some prefer other tools for this task. You can also do it in PS, but it will be more labour intensive to do so. Do this on a copy of the master file - never on the original.
This is a very brief overview, and there's quite a bit more to it than that, in particular the actual techniques and tools to use (and how to use them). Like I say, a big subject. If you're serious about learning more, I highly recommend the Real World Sharpening book (2nd ed): of all the material I've read on this subject, that's by far the most comrpehensive and informative work. Yes, a whole book just on sharpening - said it was a big question!
IMHO the "sharpen once and once only" approach is outdated, and it's just not flexible enough to cover all the bases. But not everyone will agree with this I'm sure...

  • LR4 and CS5 Raw versions

LR4 says it uses Camera Raw V 7.0 I only see version 6.7 in the Adobe labs. Are these the same? What if I use CS5, how do I maintain process compatibility?

ACR 6.7 is for LR4 compatibility.  ACR 6.7 knows how to convert PV2012 so you can view your LR4 processing in CS5, but the UI for PV2012 is not part of ACR 6.7.   For that you’ll need CS6/ACR 7.0, presumably.
So in answer to your question, just say Open Anyway, and ACR 6.7 will do the PV1012 rendering on the way into Photoshop.

  • Noise reduction and sharpening in LR4

Am I the only one that feels that the LR4 NR is inferior to that of LR3? I swear the only slider that does anything is the luminance and it is not as precise or powerful as LR3. The detail and contrast slders don't seem to do anything?? And as for the sharpening, the radius and detail seem to not do much as compared to LR3. Is it just that it is slower than LR3? I just feel as if I can't dial in things as precise. I am using RC1 with 5D3 files. Should I go for RC2? I heard is was even slower. Thanks

As far as I know, nothing was changed in the sharpening and noise redution between LR 3 and LR4, so I think you are "seeing things" that aren't there...and yes, PV 2012 takes more processing than PV 2010 but the image detail (sharpening and noise reduction) should be the same...

  • LR4 and Camera Raw 6.7

    Hello,
This is my first post, so please bear with me if I do something wrong.
I got LR4 (update from 3) right after it was relesed.  I also have Photoshop CS5, so I ran into the PS/LR4 interoperability issue like everybody else.  I just checked the status of this issue and I read the followinng in the Lightroom Journal (posted by thogarty on March 12, 2012 under the title "Lightroom 4 Hot Issues":
The team would like to provide an update on several issues discovered since last Monday night’s launch. Thanks for your patience while we investigated and compiled this list.
    Edit in Photoshop Workflow
Currently, the Edit in Photoshop workflow asks that you have the Camera Raw 7 plug-in installed.  Please note that the Camera Raw 7 plug-in is not available at this time.  The correct plug-in for Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5 compatibility is Camera Raw 6.7, currently available on Adobe Labs Please keep in mind that currently Camera Raw 6.7 is a a Release Candidate version of the plug-in. A “release candidate” label indicates that this update is well tested but would benefit from additional community testing before it is distributed automatically to all of our customers.
This is a little confusing.  When I start up LR4 and go to Help>About I get the About window in whose upper right corner I see "Lightroom 4.0, Camera Raw 7.0".  What is going to happen when the Camera Raw 6.7 gets released and I install it.  Is it going to upgrade my PS plug-in only or, perhaps, downgrade my LR4 plug-in at the same time?
    REgards,
    Andy

I don't have Lightroom 4. And from what I had seen so far in the forum, I don't plan on getting it. But from what I have seen I don't think things are any different than they have been with previous versions. Lightroom 4 has been designed to work with Camera Raw 7, which will be part of Photoshop CS6. I don't have the CS6 Beta, and don't plan on getting it. But apparently ACR 7 is not yet ready for release. When you don't have the current release of Camera Raw my experience has been that Lightroom has always given that warning and provided you with the opportunity to edit a copy which includes the Lightroom adjustments. The reason this has to be done is that when you send a raw image from Lightroom to Photoshop Camera Raw Has to interpret the adjustments. And if you don't have the current version the best thing to choose is to send a copy that includes the Lightroom adjustments.
But there seems to be a problem at this point because Lightroom 4 has been released ahead of Photoshop CS6 and so things are out of sync at the present time.
When I was still using Lightroom 2 and even Lightroom 3 I was using Photoshop CS3. So my option was always to send a copy of the raw image to Photoshop. In those two versions of Lightroom the adjustments carried through and I felt the results were acceptable. Apparently, that isn't the case right now with the new version.
Sending a copy to Photoshop doesn't really cause problems, in my opinion. Even if you don't have to do that, once you have completed your adjustments in Photoshop that image has to be saved as a new image. The adjustments cannot be applied from Photoshop to the original raw image. That has never been the case.
In light of all the problems a lot of people seem to be having, I am steering clear of Lightroom 4, at least for the time being. I still get good results with Lightroom 3.6 and have full support for all my cameras. But it seems to me that it's going to take some coordinated effort from Adobe to get this Lightroom/ACR discrepancy resolved. Good luck to all of you. I'm just having a lot of fun with my Lightroom 3/Photoshop CS5 combination.

  • Should I Avoid LR4 and Get LR3 Because of My Huge Hierarchical Keyword List?

I abandoned LR2 several years ago because it crashed from my hierarchical list of 12,000 keywords. (Botanical and common names and other terms.) I have been using CS5/Camera Raw/Bridge to manage and edit my images. The hierarchical list is necessary for my stock photo business.
I will soon be needing to compare and edit images for a book publication and gallery show and I am thinking I may need to return to LR so I can work more effciently.  I do not care about not exporting some keywords or synonyms etc.  I think (right now anyway) that it is fine that all keywords associated with the images get exported for my stock submissions. I  ususally check off only the sub-keywords or sub-sub-sub keywords.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Is LR 3 able to handle my huge list of hierarchical keywords which is now larger than 12,000 words?
    2) Should I upgrade to LR3 and not to LR4 to avoid the keyword mess I have been reading about but don't understand very well?
    3) Is it possible to even upgrade to LR3 now that LR4 is released?
    3)  Would LR4 handle my keywords better or worse than LR2?  Than LR3?
    4) Is there a work efficiency reason to upgrade to CS6 without using any version of LR and continue using Bridge and Camera Raw as I have been?
    5) Is there anything else I have not thought to ask? I am somewhat technically challenged and dread learning new software, having been burned in the past with ExpressionsMedia disaster and LR2 which crashed etc.
Thanks for any and all input from the forum!

I try to answer your questions. I also have a large list of hierarchical keywords (funny ... also botanical names) but not as much as you have.
    1) I think that Lr3 is able to handle your list of keywords. I have not heard from anybody that there is a limit to the number of keywords that Lr is able to handle.
    2) There seem to be some keyword issues in Lr4. My keywords were perfectly fine in Lr3 but after upgrading to Lr4 some of my keywords were not populated, meaning that the keywords themselves were listed in the keyword list but the image count showed 0. I still have my Lr3 catalog so was able to check (with Lr3) that, indeed, in Lr3 all the keywords in question were populated with the correct number of images. Fortunately there were not too many of these not-populated keywords, so I corrected the issue manually.
Since correct keywords are mandatory for your stock business, you are right in hesitating to upgrade to Lr4. In my opinion, the improvements that Lr4 offers over Lr3 are mainly in areas that are - probably - not so important to a stock business: improvements in the Develop Module and new Process Version, the Book Module, the map Module. On the other hand I would think that image management is paramount for you and in this area Lr4 is not much different than Lr3.
    3) You will not be able to get an upgrade to Lr3 from Adobe now that Lr4 has been released. So you had to find a 3rd party vendor (B&H? Amazon?) who still sells Lr3.
    4) Apart from the issue described above, I don't see any difference in keyword handling between Lr3 and Lr4. Lr2 is too far back for me - I don't remember.
    5) My suggestion for you would be: You have to upgrade at some point. The longer you wait, the more difficult the transition will be because the differences of future versions to Lr2 will become greater. Since at the moment version 4.1 is in the works (there have been two RCs (Release candidates) of version 4.1 already), maybe it would be wise to wait until the final 4.1 version is out. maybe the keyword issues have been fixed.
    6) You can "upgrade" to Lr4 and still have Lr2 on your system. All the Lr versions are stand-alone versions, not "plug-ins" for the previous versions. So you can have two (or more) different Lr versions on your system. So I would suggest that you upgrade to Lr 4.1 (once this version is out) but leave Lr2 on your system. When you Lr4 you will be asked if you want to upgrade your Lr catalog to Lr4 and you have the option of saving the Lr4 catalog as a different file, so that your Lr2 catalog is still available for Lr2 (Lr2 will not be able to work with the Lr4 catalog!). That way, if anything is amiss in Lr4 you can go back to Lr2 and work from there.

  • Best strategy for using ACR7 in LR4 with CS5?

Although all my cameras are supported by ACR6, I would like to use the new process 2012 of ACR7.  I would like to try LR4 (giving ACR7) but don't really want the expense of upgrading from CS5 to CS6 since I don't need any of the CS6 new facilities.  But I would like to try the file organisation facilities of LR4 instead of Bridge (as well as having ACR7 of course).
I read that PSD files exported from LR4/ACR7 are not compatible with CS5.  Is this correct?  If so, is there a way around this, so that I can do final tweaks in CS5 to a 16bit file processed and output by LR4/ACR7?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

As far as I've heard, you should get PS CS6 if you plan to use LR4. Full stop.
But, I did hear that there is a 'release candidate' version of ACR6.7 you can get from here: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/03/adobe-camera-raw-6-7-and-dng-converter-6-7 -available-on-adobe-labs.html. This wont show up if you try 'Auto Update' for whatever reasons. Hasn't for me, at least!
There have been no complaints with the compatibility of the ACR6.7 RC with LR4 and PS CS5.

  • When Exporting from LR4 to CS5, Image is Changed

When I export my images from LR4 to CS5 using the Edit In... choice, I first get the ...may require the...Camera Raw plug-in version 7.0... which we all know doesn't exist. Not that that isn't annoying enough (I know - I can turn off the warning) but the image then presented in PS5 is not of the same quality as the one I am exporting from LR4. It's almost as if the Lightroom adjustments are not carried through. I have tried all three color space options to no avail. Also, I am not being presented with the dialog asking if I want to edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments. These are Nikon RAW files (.nef) that I am working with. Other images that are not RAW files do display the Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 dialog. What am I missing here?

There are other threads addressing this issue, but install ACR 6.7, which is available in release candidate on labs.adobe.com and you should get the same results from both apps.

  • LR4 to CS5 edited images saved to psd not visible in LR4.

Upgraded to LR4 and using CS5. If I edit an image in Photoshop then save it as a psd file to the origional location that the image was imported into LR4 the psd image-file does not show up in LR4.  If I search for the file using finder (mac) I find the file where I expect it to be but LR4 does not see it.  I used the same workflow in LR3 with no problems but, since ugrading to LR4 no psd images are showing up in the LR4 Library. Can anyone suggest a solution?  Thanks!

When I first loaded the folder, I experienced no problems. I processed 15 images and stopped. The next day, when I tried to go in, problems started. The 15 processed images were visible, but the other 800-odd images were covered with a "film", looked grayish. They were not accessible. I could not click on them to process them. I have never had this particular problem happen. I tried reloading the "grayish" images - LR4 showed loading, then when the operation was complete, "No images in folder." I tried deleting the folder, then reloading it. It didn't change - only the 15 images loaded. I moved the 15 processed images into a separate folder, then loading the folder containing the remaining images - "No images in folder." Weird. I use Windows 7 on a Dell PC.

  • Files Renamed when importing to LR4 and now can't find them in LR3

    Help!  What should I do???
Yesterday I installed LR 4 Beta.  I had a folder with 300 images in it on LR 3, obviously all files had names.  I imported these photos into LR4 to work with LR4 and they were renamed in the process.  Now in my LR3 folder, all the files still have there old names and the "missing photo ?" and I assume that's because the name has been changed and LR3 can't find them.  Any thoughts on an easy fix?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

Thanks so much for helping me with this.
I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem.  Now that I look at the
    import settings that were used:
    1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
    also renamed.
    2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
    changed LR4 names.
    1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
    1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2
    1201_003 changed to 1201_266-2
    1201_004 changed to 1201_267-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit changed to 1201_268-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_269-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_270-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit-2 changed to 1201_271-2
I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the
original file names, but this backup only has 203 of the 268 images I
    imported yesterday and are renamed.
    Thanks again,

  • High pitch noise in CS4 and CS5.5

    Hello.
Firstly I want to say that yes I know people have asked this question before but as far as I can tell none of them have been solved. Some have somewhat useful answers but none of them truely solve the problem. This thread in particular probably has the most information about the problem I'm having http://forums.adobe.com/message/4298535#4298535
I recently tried Premiere Pro CS5.5 and CS4 (trial version) to replace my Corel Video Studio X6 which tried to replace Windows Movie Maker. Video Studio and Movie Maker both crash whenever I imported large video files.
Anyway I'm getting a problem where the video files I import to Premiere Pro CS4 and CS5.5 have a high pitch noise in the video preview.
It's a high pitch noise almost like it's getting feedback from something. Also when someone is supposed to be talking there's a very low distortion, like the audio started playing in very slow motion but the high pitch noise is still present.
I'll put a link at the end with the video file that's giving me trouble.
The video and audio are in a single AVI file. The video format is H264 shot at 60fps and the audio should be Mpeg-1 L2, 48khz at 320kbps. I don't know if the video's audio is in 24bit or 16bit.
I've tried different settings for premiere. Trying 60fps and 30fps for the framerate for the project. Trying 44khz and 32khz and 96khz didn't fix it. Using the "Desktop" preset in CS4 and Custom for CS5.5.
My audio hardware is a Logitech G930. It's a wireless USB headset with microphone. My motherboard audio is Realtek HD Audio. Both are enabled but I only use the headset now and nothing is being sent to the Realtek audio chip (according to Windows' sound options). The headset plays audio at 16bit 48khz.
The video file plays fine in every media program I own that can play the h264 codec. With the exception of Movie Maker and Video Studio x6. Video Studio will preview the video and audio just fine but when I try and skip around the program hangs and crashes. Movie Maker just plain crashes when I try and import the video. Some of the programs that can play the video are VLC, Media Player 11, and Media Player Classic.
I'm not sure if Final Cut Pro has the same problem. I don't have a Mac so I can't test it.
Here's a sample video that works the way it should. I pulled a BIK file from a game and converted it to H264 in AVI. Not sure what it's audio format is.
    http://www.mediafire.com/watch/15fr85n78xfu94x/Opening_Cinematic_Placeholder.avi
Just click the download button at the top right.
Here's an afflicted file. Not the exact specific file I have been talking about, but it has the same codecs. This one is shorter in length and smaller in size. It still has the high pitch noise, but since there is no one talking in this you don't hear the weird low pitch distortions.
    http://www.mediafire.com/watch/qqbk0n6io0lspn5/eso_2014-02-28_20-08-18-959.avi
Just click the download button at the top right.
If there's anymore infor you need let me know.
    Thanks.

    >single AVI file. The video format is H264
H.264 will not work inside an AVI wrapper http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854115
-Insignia camera uses H.264 to either AVI... SOME to MOV wrapper
-so use the MOV wrapper if YOUR Insignia camera offers that option
-Says VLC will convert in reply #6 http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1172956
    >can't believe a professional piece of software can't handle something this simple
As Jim said, not within the design specifications because it is non-standard video

  • Is it possible to have Indesign CS4 and CS5.5 both installed on the same Mac? 10.6.8

We have a bunch of recent Intel macs at our corporation.  Currently they should all have 10.6.8.  They were all imaged from a base image that has Adobe CS4 embedded in it.
We are now using a packaging software part of the JAMF Casper suite and AAMIE to push CS5.5 to the end users.
The problem is that we want to keep CS4 on the end user's computers in case of issues.  That way the end users can try Indesign 5.5 and see if it does everything they need to do and still have Indesign for backwards compatiblity.
So we created a CS5.5 install package using the AAMIE tool which works fine.  We then use Casper to spam the package out to a Mac.
The issue that arises is that a few Plugin errors occur during the lauch of Indesign CS5.5 such as:
Adobe inDesign does not recognize InCopy Bridge UI.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyExport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyExportUI.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
Adobe InDesign does not recognize InCopyImport.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in.
There was one more plugin error that occured before the first one but I forgot to write it down.
If we click okay to them, the application launches okay but when you quit and relaunch it, you still get one of the errors.
Is this because both applications are installed at the same time?
Is it offically okay as per Adobe to have Indesign CS4 and CS5.5 installed on the same Macintosh?
What else should we be considering what to do?

Well currently, I'm just testing this issue.  I just installed the trial version of  Adobe CS4 suite on my mac and then deployed the CS5.5 package on top off it  The resulting errors that I listed above are the same ones that occur when the end user has a licensed volume license install of CS4 and CS5.5.
So I'm still back to square 1 where when I deploy cs5.5 on an  end user's mac, they get those plugin errors when they launch Indesign CS5.5.
I am not sure about the licensing restrictions, I asked my Director and he is going to check with our VAR.

  • I've Just migrated my mac to a new iMac and CS5 is dead

I've Just migrated my mac to a new iMac and CS5 is dead, I can't uninstall it or do anything with it. When I try to load an application it just crashes (I'm guessing because it needs registering on my new machine) and I can't uninstall it.
I've been using CS5 for the past three years, and contemplating getting Creative Cloud. The problem is, it looks like I didn't every properly register CS5 with my Adobe ID, the software package was a download from a thrid party seller, and the email account the sent all the registration info to is no longer in use. . .
When I try to use Application Manager to uninstall it just tells me I need application manager and gives me a link to Adobe's website to download it. I download it, install it, try again, same result, tells me I need to download it. . .
    Frustrating.
Any help greatly appreciated, I'm currently completely stuck!

CS5 is not officially tested and certified for Win 8. You may try compatibility modes and turning off al lsecurity stuff, but should be prepared that it may never work.

  • Fontproblems and fontcaches in Illustrator CS4 and CS5

    Hello all,
I've been having a serious and severe problem using Ilustrator and fonts.
As this is a very complex problem to explain, I'll try to make it easy to understand.
First I'll tell you the specifications and software used:
Imac 27 inch running  MAC OS X 10.6.7 with follow software:
    Illustrator CS4 + Illustrator CS5, both installed
Fontreserve (running a central server and macs connect through a MAC-client) http://www.extensis.com/en/support/font-reserve.jsp
So we use an external third party fontsoftware to manage and activate our fonts used in Illustrator.
We only have the required system fonts installed on our systems.
We recently ran in a big issue concerning fonts within Illustrator.
I'll try to explain what the problem really is ...
So normally we boot up Illustrator and we activate our fonts in fontreserve.
The fonts get loaded in Illustrator. So that does work like it should.
But the problem begins when we deactivate fonts.
Font reserve does deactivate them and in Illustrator the deactivated fonts are gone or so it seems ...
After a restart, I only start Illustrator. So our client fontreserve stays closed.
I opened the job I worked on before the restart and Illustrator opens the document and loads the fonts.
You read it right, Illustrator does find all the fonts which, before the restart, were deactivated.
Where does he gets those fonts?
So I started to investigate and tried a couple of things.
    1) I physically moved the fontreserve-plugin out Illustrator so it will not be loaded on startup.
That didn't fix it because Illustrator still finds the fonts.
    2) I physically plugged out the network cable to be sure Illustrator could not contact our fontserver.
Sadly he still did find the fonts.
    3) I used "Tweak Freak" to clear my fontcaches. I also searched for "AdobeFnt" to clean out the cache from Adobe itself.
    This did not work either.
    4) I tried opening the document again but this time in CS5. And guess what? Illustrator CS5 asks for all the fonts that are missing, which is correct because not one font has been activated.
Strangly enough I decided to reopen Illustrator CS4 (Illustrator CS5 still beiing open as well), and suddenly Illustrator CS4 asks for the fonts too?
A minute ago he still found all the fonts and after opening Illustrator CS5, it does not ...
So Adobe what is the connection between Illustrator CS4 and CS5?
And where does Illustrator store its fontcache?
It would be nice to run a script on shutdown te delete all possible fontcaches.
So after spending a couple of hours fixing this problem, it seems that I still don't quite understand where the problem lies.
    I'm hoping you can.
As this is an urgent matter, I hope to get an answer or support as soon as possible.
    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to see what files Adobe Illustrator has open by using the Activity Monitor.app application.
To do so, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder). Locate Adobe Illustrator in the list and then double-click on it. This should open up a new window like shown in the image below:
Switch to the Open Files and Ports tab, and it should list every open file that Illustrator is using.
