SHARPENING TOOLS

I read a mid-year article in Photoshop News that in ACR 4.1 "A hidden preview of each new control is available in 4.1. On Mac, hold the Option key while adjusting a slider". I can't seem to make this work on ACR 4.2 (which is what I have installed)? Am I missing something? and if so, does this feature work in Lightroom's ACR, which is where I really want to use it?

In fact I have been viewing at 100% and higher, but finally realized that this feature doesn't work on Amount but does work on the other 3 sliders. Thanks.
Am I correct to understand that this feature does not yet work in LR, which is where most of my work is migrating?

  • Sharpening tool is not working in library mode or export LR 4.4

    I was editing phots when I suddenly realized that sharpening tool, neither the adjustment brush for sharpening or ordinary sharpening, would be shown in Library mode or when photos were exported. When I see the picture in Develop mode, they seem fine and I can adjust the sharpness as usual. So something goes wrong between Develop and Library mode.
    I have Lightroom 4.4. The ISO level in the pictures are not high at all, so that is not the problem, as I have read some explanaitions of. When I see the picture in 1:1 in both modes, they look the same after sharpening. But if I zoom more, I can definately see big differences.
    Can someone explain what is wrong? Is this a bug?
    Thank you in advance.

    Aha, that explains the Library mode. Still can't see the changes in the exported pictures, though. Everything else works.
    Are you running 4.1 or 4.1.1? Maybe that dot release will fix the issue if you're running an older version. And when you Export, do you have sharpening settings on there too? What about Edit In Photoshop command? Do you see the sharpening that way?

  • Iphoto 11 sharpening tool crashing?

    Please Help!  I have Iphoto 11 version 9.2.2  on Mac Mini Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    The sharpening tool consistently crashes the program and I am irritated! (to say the least) I go to use this most basic of all tools and BOOM! crazy colors in blocks jump on to the left side of my screen and I am locked out completely - only the spinning wheel of death moving about the screen.  I have to do a hard shut down to get back control.
    What is the problem? How can I fix this?
    Signed,

    Try the following:
    1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete iPhoto's cache file delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
    3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
    NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
    where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

    I am going through a final edit of photos and am trying to figure out a way to either a, add the sharpen tool to the tool bar on the lower left hand side of the screen b, have a shortcut key to get the sharpen brush (i see on line that it is control v but that is not working for me or c, find some other way that lets me get to the sharpen tool quickly and easily without having to hit the drop down and scroll to the bottom. There has to be a way...

    Frank -- my apologies! You are 100% correct. I must have added that to my custom command set. I have no memory of adding it.
    {Red-faced Emoji}
    It does illustrate something for this thread. The OP can follow your advice and add the Sharpen Quick Brush to his/her command set and use it with a keyboard shortcut.
    I find no way to activate a Brush from a Brick via the keyboard.
    The commands "Select Burn Tool" and "Select Dodge Tool" do nothing on my system except remove the focus from the current tool.
    Here, fwiw, is my current command set for Quick Brushes:
    Again, sorry for attempting a correction that was wrong.

  • Simple video sharpening tool?

    Is there a simple video sharpening tool avaliable?

    Hi Pantau,
        Could you please elaborate what do you mean by query too?
        From your post/question it seems you need metadata in some format which can be used with SparqlGUI. if so, it is not a big deal. RDF file can be used with SparqlGUI AND  With a few lines of code you can generate RDF file having metadata ofa file. To do so, please do similar to below lines  ( I am skipping checks, syntaxes etc.)
    1. SXMPFiles myFile;
    2. myFile.OpenFile(filename, kXMP_UnknownFile, opts);
    3. SXMPMeta meta;
    4. myFile.GetXMP(&meta);
    5. string metaBuffer;
    6. meta.SerializeToBuffer(&metaBuffer, 0, 0, "", "", 0);

  • PSE 7 - no sharpen tool?

    Hi.  I recently installed PSE 7 and the tools menu does not include a sharpen tool.  Where did it go?  Are there versions that don't have this tool?  I do have blur, sponge, paint, brush, smart brush, etc.  Just no sharpen.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
    It's housed in the same slot as the blur tool. Click the little arrow under the blur icon in the toolbox to access yet. Alternately, you can use R to cycle through that tool slot...blur/sharpen/smudge.
    Here's a link to the Photoshop Help page listing the items in the tool box.

    If you have a Mac, there shouldn't be any difference in the above. BTW, the graphic is showing the default double rowed toolbox configuration.

  • The sharpen tool in iphoto '08 is different

    Can anyone help me figure out how to "soften" a picture in iphoto '08? I just upgraded from '06, and the first thing I do (just about every time) is soften my photos by moving the slider to the left. In iphoto '08, it starts all the way to the left, disabling the ability to create a softer looking photo. Do I have to now buy a new program just to be able to soften again?!

    There are many differences between iPhoto book layout and Aperture book layout. I haven't looked for awhile but Apple used to have a pretty good description of Aperture book design on the pages where they market Aperture. If you want to create the book design then Aperture is a better choice. If you like pre-designed layouts that are appealing for family albums then iPhoto is the better choice.

  • What is the best workflow for Ultimate Sharpening w PSE 8?

    I shoot a lot of flowers close up and also birds. Both have lots of detail, feathers or stamen, so I rely heavily on sharpening. With birds, sometimes they are flying or distant or both which makes it challenging to get the pics sharp. Recently I have learned more about sharpening and now I am suffering from, "The more I know, the more I know I don't know." Also, some of my information is based on rumor and I would really appreciate any advice. How about if I discuss my workflow and ask some questions here and there.
    I shoot RAW with a Canon 7D and I almost always downsize my pics to nnnn x 1080 for this conversation, lets assume I always do this downsizing. I've heard that downsized pics should never be sharpened until after they are downsized. Is this true? Should I set all of the ACR sharpening sliders to zero? Should I also keep the Clarity slider low in ACR or is it more mid-tone contrast and less sharpening? Is there another way to improve Clarity in PSE, not ACR?
    When I am done with ACR and open in Elements, the first thing I do is crop and resize using Image, Resize, Bicubic Sharper. Then I fix blemishes. Next I select out the subject(s) and adjust with Color Curves and then Luminous Sharpening which seems to give me better results than Enhance- Adjust Sharpness. (After two years of using Elements I just found this Luminous sharpening and it is so good. I sure wish I would have notice that in Brundage's book earlier. I makes me wonder what else I am missing.) After the Luminous Sharpening should I try High Pass sharpening additionally or any other kind of sharpening? Are there any rules of thumb on when what type of sharpening works best in which application? For example, I heard another rumor that sharpening highlights or dark shadows just increases noise. Is there a good way to handle those situations, like select them out or use a special blend mode?
    After I am done with the subject, I usually inverse to the background and de-noise and/or blurr and desaturate to punch up the subject.
    Is full Photoshop required to get the best sharpening tools or is the sharpening similar and other aspects are more powerful? I use so little of Elements 8 that I would assume and hope that Photoshop or Lightroom would be overkill at this point.
    Thank you for reviewing this! If you can think of any way I could improve I would really appreciate any comments.

    Hi Barbara,
    I am humbled to be communicating with someone who wrote such and incredible book! Ok, enough blathering.
    This will also answer Andrewzaye's question about output.
    Maybe I shouldn't be resampling but here is my rationale. Most of my best pics I like to show occasionally on my HTDV which has a resolution of 1920x 1080. I resample my pics to get them down to that 1080 vertical resolution so that they will fit the native resolution of the screen. (The sides often don't extend the full 1920 but I don't have a problem with the black space on the sides.) This is based on my believe that images on LCDs look best at the LCDs native resolution (and I like to think I know about this because, as a sales mgr for Toshiba, I used to sell notebook computer LCDs by the tens of thousands to big computer companies.) Sometimes I resample and downsize again to email pics as n x 680. It seems to work fine with decent results but I am certainly open to suggestion.
    If I eventually decide to print out a photo, it will be to hang on a wall and for that I save the original CR2 file and the post ACR dng files. If I like something enough to print it, I don't mind editing it again and making sure I am getting it as good as possible. Of course I would keep as much resolution as possible for printing.
    Ok, those are my excuses. I would love to hear your thoughts on my sharpening questions.

  • Blur Tool Problem - Random Lines (Adobe CC 2014.2.1 Release)

    Hi,
    I'm hoping that I haven't ticked some obscure option, but I have been using the Blur Tool in Photoshop CC for a while and after the most recent update have had issues with it - basically, when I try to use it to blur a specific area, it randomly goes all over the place (as if I'd grabbed the mouse and moved it rapidly in a random direction).  Obviously if I can't use the blur tool with precision (well, any tool really!) it makes it hard to work!
    Some interesting notes / observations:
    The sharpen tool works perfectly - only sharpens where I point it, which makes me think that it's not an issue with my mouse.  No other tools I use have the issue either - only the blur tool!!
    I have no other pointing devices plugged in (I had a pen tablet plugged in - long story, prefer the mouse over the tablet :-)) so it's not some other pointing device making noise.
    Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?
    Thanks - blurring and then going into the layer to delete the random lines of blur is getting tiresome - and it's not very precise either.
    Cheers,
    Terence.

  • Camera Raw 6.3 crashes when using sharpening masking

    On non-SSE2 CPUs (AMD Athlon XP for example) Adobe Camera Raw crashes when changing masking slider in the sharpening tool.
    To completely fix this problem, you should install patched Camera Raw plug-in.
    Download link, 32-bit only: http://www.multiupload.com/SDPSHS6IK8
    Note: USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
    While it works just great for me, I can not promise anything.
    And note that this is NOT official fix for the problem, it needs to be fixed by developers so it's better to send bug reports.
    This solution can be used while there are no better solutions from Adobe.
    Just overwrite original plug-in, by default it is located in the: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats
    This will fix the problem for all CS5 applications: Photoshop, Bridge, etc because they all use this plug-in.
    Sorry,  but I will not patch previous versions, so you will need to update  Camera Raw to version 6.3 before using patched plug-in.
    This problem is present in all Camera Raw 6.x and appears only on non-SSE2 CPUs.
    You can read more details here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/733986?tstart=0

    It's been my experience, throughout my 36 year career in computer engineering, that RAM tests almost always succeed even when the RAM has intermittent errors.
    Do you have ECC (error correcting) RAM?  A system set up to use ECC RAM and with ECC RAM installed will correct some errors as it runs, and will halt and immediately tell you when an uncorrectable RAM error has occurred - which is FAR better than trying to forge ahead with bad data (which will ultimately crash it somewhere).  RAM errors happen more often than you'd think, probably because it's the one piece of technology being pushed right to the blistering limits in most computers.  Even if the chance of a RAM error is one in a billion, keep in mind that literally billions of RAM reads and writes happen every second.
    Every future computer system I'll have will have ECC RAM, as do my current ones.

  • Sharpening in LR vs. PS

    I am a novice with LR and PS and I am just beginning to be able to see what sharpening does to a photo. On page 218 of Kelby's LR book he describes how to automate sharpening from LR to PS.
    The process involves using Unsharp Mask, Amount: 120%, Radius 1.0 and Threshold 3. Then Fade Unsharp Mask choosing Luminosity from the pop-up menu.
    I ran this on Kelby's picture of an old truck available in Chapter 5 here: http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/lightroomphotos/
    I sent an unsharpened image from LR to PS and sharpened it as noted above. Then I used LR to shapen another copy of the photo. I then used Compare mode in LR to view both photos next to each other. I was able to see a substantial difference with the PS sharpened photo being far superior to the LR sharpened photo.
    I am now convinced that I will sharpen in PS, regardless of the extra
    -edit files, until a new version of LR does a much better job with sharpening.

    Sharpening in the Lr Develop module is essentially capture sharping. The Bruce Fraser article that Andrew mentions (in the post above) discusses this phase of sharpening.
    At the moment Lr lacks a robust set of output sharpening tools (e.g. sharpening in export and the Web and Slideshow modules). I also find the "Low/Medium/High" sharpening in the Print module to not be particularly useful.
