Sharper text for DVD

can i get sharper graphics and text from my DV-PAL sequence if i output an uncompressed version and then compress that in MPEG-2 to make a DVD.

Exporting an uncompressed Quicktime from your DV timeline won't help.
I would expect that the problem lies in your DV sequence. Any graphics or text you use will be compressed as DV. If you want them to look their best you should work on an uncompressed timeline. This will mean rendering all your DV footage unless you have the ability to digitise it as uncompressed.
Once you have your sequence on an uncompressed timeline you can export an uncompressed Quicktime and you will retain that quality. 8 bit is fine for all but the most demanding of applications, and your DV footage is not up to that. Besides, you are going to compress to MPEG2 when you encode your DVD anyway.

  • Sharp text for the web

I like to put some (small) text on a simple image to use it on the web, but the text looks blurry. I've tried all the anti-aliasing options, but none of them looks sharp. Pixelfonts do not seem to look any better.
Is there any way to make small text look sharp in Photoshop, or should I use Illustrator e.g.?
I'm just a beginner in PHotoshop and I have no clue how to solve this problem.
    Thanks!
    Marie-Elise

In CS3, if you are using Save for Web, leave the file with the text layer separate and you can specify Maximum Quality for text by clicking on the little icon next to the box and specifying a separate value for Text.
They seem to have got rid of it in CS4! (Or hidden it even better than that little dot!)

  • Compressing Video for DVD Burn Makes Text Look jagged

    Hello,
I'm currently at the final steps of a lengthy video production project and am struggling to make the text elements of my finished video display correctly after compression prior to burning it to DVD.
I create and produce music for a living and don't have nearly as much experience with video editing. I'm a bit new to all of this and am using FCE 4.0.1 to create my video & Compressor and DVD Studio Pro 2 to compress and author video for DVD.
    *My main issue is this:*
I'm using an imported still image as the title card for my film. It's a mixture of large plain Helvetica Neu font text with some additional stylized lettering created in Photoshop (which is why I'm not using FCE's built-in text generators for the title card). The typography isn't very wild and crazy, it's basically big bold letters and a few gentle curves. I exported the image (1200x600) from Photoshop as a .png and imported it into FCE.
When I export my finished video file (.png title card and all) out of FCE, I export it as a raw uncompressed Quicktime file:
    Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i
    29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080) (Anamorphic not checked).
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd).
(It displays in quicktime at 1920x1080 though.)
After initially exporting from FCE, the title card image and all the other text in my movie created from FCE's built-in text generators look fine. It's only after I compress the finished movie in DVD Studio Pro or Compressor that I get jagged looking edges on the curves of my letters, primarily the title card image (the text generated by FCE's generators holds up okay).
In compressor I'm using the "MPEG-2 6.2 Mbps 2-pass settings for DVD" preset and in DVD Studio Pro. Using '2 pass VBR', 'Best' motion tracking, 'best' and 'highest quality' on all the compression settings I can find. I'm encoding at a total rate of 6.5Mb/sec max and 6Mb/sec average. These are standards for compressing to DVD and since I'm preparing a master for reproduction, I've been told I shouldn't increase the data rate over this or I'll run into player compatibility issues down the line.
Any ideas on how I can make this text image last through the compression process and still look clean and crisp without having to increase the data rate of compression? I'm going to play with different file formats for now, but it that doesn't work I don't know where to go from there.
Thank you for any help insights you can provide.

I started with a variety of HD raw footage (most of it gathered on Canon 5D Mkii SLR Digital camera in the form of: H.624 1920x1080) but converted all my raw footage prior to editing into:
    Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i
    29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080) (Anamorphic not checked).
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd).
I edited everything in Final Cut Express 4.0.1 using the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60 at 29.97 fps sequence preset.
When I finished editing all my video I exported it as a raw uncompressed quicktime file which is also:
    Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i
    29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080) (Anamorphic not checked).
    Field Dominance: Upper (Odd).
But when played in quicktime this finished video displays at 1920x1080, which I'm happy with. (I'm assuming this is the proper behavior of Apple Intermediate Codec? It seemed to take 1920x1080 footage, converted it to 1440x1080, and then spit it back out as 1920x1080 after the whole editing process.)
But seeing as how my issue is with an image file I'm creating in Photoshop and importing into my video sequence, I don't quite understand how the rest of my footage would really effect it. I've made sure to create the image using the same dimensions and pixel aspect ratio as my sequence frames by using one of the standard Photoshop screen templates (HD widescreen 1440x1080). I save my title card image as a non-interlaced .png file and import it into FCE.
When I place the imported image on the timeline, FCE doesn't resize it because it matches the frame dimensions of the sequence. When I view the image at 100% in FCE's viewer all of the image's lines, curves, and shapes display properly as they appear in my original photoshop file.
But for some reason FCE treats this imported .png image file as a 'rendered proxy.' So while it looks fine in FCE prior to rendering and exporting, when I export the video sequence containing this newly imported title card image, the resulting uncompressed quicktime file contains jagged horizontal lines across some of the characters in the title card image. It almost looks as if there's some interlacing issue going on.
However after much experimentation and trial and error I landed on a custom compression setting in Compressor that seemed to take care of this issue. I did as you recommended and selected a high quality 7.5 Mbps encoding preset (7.5 Mbps max/6.4 Mbps average), but noticed a 2 pass VBR rendered better results. What really seemed to do the trick was adding a deinterlace filter to the compression preset, and that miraculously seemed to eliminate the jagged lines in my title card image, restoring it to its original appearance (at least during my initial inspection in Compressor's preview mode).
After letting Compressor crank away, I looked at the finished compressed video in quicktime and the jagged interlaced-looking lines in my title card image have returned. Compressor's preview was somehow misguided.
Now my plan is to burn this compressed video to a DVD and view it on a TV to see if maybe these jagged lines in the final compressed version are only being caused by viewing on my computer's monitor. I'm hoping this is the case, otherwise I'm at a loss of what to do next.
If you need any more details please let me know. Otherwise I hope this is enough to give you a better idea of what issues I'm dealing with.
    Thanks again for your insights.

  • How do I set up AE for DVD and Web?

    Hi -
I've got a project that must be outputted for 2 viewing environments - a Quicktime that will be uploaded to YouTube and  - a DVD.  If I'm understanding this PAR discussion, I will have to build this project twice!!
I know I need 720x480 for DVD and 480x360 for the Quicktime mov going to Youtube.  If I just burn the 480x360 onto the DVD I get some distortion.
I used square pixels for the Photoshop and AE files for both.
Part of the content is scans of forms - and the text should be sharp enough to read.  On the dvd is was way too blurry.
So let me start with this question - given these two destinations - what specs should I use when setting up my Photoshop and AE documents?
    Thanks in advance -
    jl

To support what the others have said:
"If you’ll be rendering and exporting a composition to more than one media format, always match the pixel dimensions for your composition to the largest pixel dimensions used for your output. Later, you can use output modules in the Render Queue panel to encode and export a separate version of the composition for each format."

  • Subtitle generator for dvd sp 4

    Hi
I need to create subtitles for a dvd I am makeing with version 4. I used to do it in subtitle editor 1 for dvd sp 1.5, but this does not work anymore acording to the manual, but it does not say how to do it.
Thanks in advance for any help
    Pepo

You can either just work on a text file in any text editor and import it as an STL file (info on format and commands available in an STL file are well-covered in the manual in Chapter 13), or get a utility like STLEdit ( http://www.stledit.com/ ) that can help create this type of file.
You can also create subtitles right from within DVDSP4, but I wouldn't recommend it as you can't use any DVDSP commands to export those subtitles. This can cause problems if you need to make wholesale changes to the file, or import it into a new project, or move every title forward or backwards a bit in time.

  • Pixelated, low quality text in DVD Studio Pro

Is it normal for the text in DVD studio pro to be pixelated and low-quality once you burn a project and enter full screen mode (is this because it is not vector-based)? Is there a *better definition/resolution setting* without going into HD which is not compatible with all machines? how can you get better quality line definition?
and most importantly..can you apply this setting to the project once it has been created?
    thank you for your help

buttons are have jagged edges and are little play triangles, just the standard shape for play...
..I spoke to someone today who said ts pretty impossible to get defined edges unless you have a super-expensive post production suite...right?..and something to do with anti-aliasing
any way round this 'jagged edge' issue or is it actually the program has this 'poor resolution'in accordance with you mac capabilities?
p.s. sorry about my language...as you guessed Im pretty computer-lingo-illiterate...so please answer plainly if you can...thank you ever so much...I think we might be getting somewhere...or at least to a point

  • How do I prevent errors importing foreign characters into subtitles for DVD studio pro?

How do I prevent errors importing foreign characters into subtitles for DVD studio pro?
I have figured out just about everything necessary for creating subtitle tracks in several foreign languages, but the only problem is that some individual characters in some languages (like the "open quotation mark" symbol in Lithuanian!) do not import properly into the subtitle track.  I can type or paste the symbols in manually, but this means doing it hundreds of times in several different languages, and defeats the purpose of using the system I've created.
Does anyone know how to import some of these odd characters.
I import characters using a text file saved in Unicode-16, and I set the language of the track to the proper language (for instance, Lithuanian).
I can't find the answer anyway, and really am stumped!!
    Thank you!!

i think i might have figured out a solution.  it's a quirk in the program.  i noticed that sometimes the quotation marks DO actually import, but only if they are in the middle of a sentence.  they only FAIL to import at the beginning of a sentence.  so, what i did was to paste a space before the beginning of every sentence with a weird low-down quotation mark, and it imported fine.
and it also seems to kill two birds with one stone, because sometimes it seems that DVD studio pro cuts off a few pixels at the beginning of a line -- so with a space inserted it just cuts off...nothing.
so far so good.  thank you for trying to help, Tom.  MUCH APPRECIATED.  this stuff can be very frustrating.  i'm already going bald fast enough....erg.

  • Jagged text from DVD studio pro

    Hi,
I have created a number of sequences in Final Cut Pro and in the beginning of each sequence I have added a text (chapter name) with the font Zapfino.
When exporting to quicktime in 720 x 1280 the type looks beautiful when I play back the .mov file.
I am importing my sequences to DVD studio pro for playback on television .
The type from Final Cut looks pixelated, jagged and terrible after the encoding. I added text in DVD pro to the menu page. That text looks fine.
I can not find a setting in DVD pro that looks like it will render the text better.
I have heard that the interlacing can damage text.
    Can anyone help?
I created my menu page in Photoshop with a image that is 720 x 1080 pixels in 72 dpi.
The first time around I created a title in Photoshop. That one looked terrible as well.
Secondly I created the title in DVD pro and as mentioned that looks good.
Do you recommend higher resolution than 72 dpi for a menu page?
    Thank you on beforehand.
    ggaarde

    Sorry I meant to say that my PS image was 720 x 1280 (not 720 x 1080)
It shouldn't be that size if you are making a SD DVD Menu. If you have later versions of Photoshop start a new blank project with pixel aspect ratio on for what you are doing (NTSC 4:3, NTSC 16 x 9 ) etc.
Other take a look at the guidelines in the manual for creating menus (For NTSC 4:3 720 x 534 and rescale to 720 x 480 without constraining proportions.) You are best off rescaling outside DVD SP and not letting DVD SP scale.

  • How do I create my own favorite template for DVD slideshows? I used to be able to select this from pulldown menu, but cannot now do so. I am directed straight to templates, which take more memory. I have a large slideshow, and need all the space I can get

First, how do I create my own favorite theme template for DVD slideshows? I used to be able to select this from pulldown menu, but cannot now do so. I am directed straight to already existing themes, which take more memory. I have a large slideshow, and need all the space I can get. I just want to use a picture as my DVD cover, and then insert a slideshow. Also, when I try to burn my 8.5gb double sided slideshow, all that burns is the music. It is a large slideshow, a memorial on the life of my now deceased brother. This means a lot to me and to my family, and I am having so much trouble trying to burn it. I have gone into Project View and selected appropriately. The bar shows I have room to burn this DVD, but it does not burn.  I have burned so many DVDs in the past, but this one just will not burn. I am so confused at this point. I will say this is the first 8.5gb I have attempted to create and burn. My specs list a 7.7gb or 4.7gb as operable....but there are no 7.7gb dvds. I had to purchase 8.5gb. Help? What am I doing wrong? I have spent so much time on this, and just cannot figure it out.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • Need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD

    Hello
Can anyone tell me the settings I need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD. I am mixing other 4:3 letterbox content. Evertime I make an mpeg with Quicktime conversion it is squeezed. I want it to be letterbox in 4:3
    Thanks in advance.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5 and DVD pro 3
    Regards,
    Dana Gonzales

In addition to using the advice above, make sure in Compressor (or other item you use to encode) that you are using the 16:9 encode ratio. If you are using QT conversion (which it sounds like from Final Cut?) also make sure that ratio is checked. Unlike a 4:3 m2v which will be 720 x 480 when you open it in QT, the 16:9 will be 720 x 404

  • Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12154

    Hello,
I try to install php 5.1.2 on a WIN2003 server and IIS6 with the OCi8 extension without success from several days.
On my server I've a 920 oracle client and the 10.1 instant client, I copy the tnsnames.ora in the instant client's directory.
I've declare many environnement variables :
    - NLS_LANG : AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
    - TNS_ADMIN : E:\...\oracle\instantclient_10_1
    - ORA_NLS33 : E:\..\oracle\920\ocommon\nls\ADMIN\DATA
With the php command line the oci_connect function correctly works : the php command line use the instant client's tnsnames.ora. I can query with success my database.
When I try to load a web php script (the same as the php command line script) I have the following error " Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12154" ( oci_connect( $user , $pass, $sid ) . The $sid variable have the value of an alias declared in the tnsnames.ora.
If I replace the sid's alias by something like this " (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=xx.xx.xx.xx)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=xx)" in the oci_connect function, I have another error : Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12705.
A web page with the phpinfo function displays the following messages about oci8 extension : It seems to be correct.
    oci8
    OCI8 Support enabled
    Revision $Revision: 1.269.2.8 $
    Active Persistent Connections 0
    Active Connections 0
    Temporary Lob support enabled
    Collections support enabled
Do you have any idea ? Thanks a lot

The web server is not seeing the Oracle environment correctly. You need to set PATH to the instant client libraries. ORA_NLS33 is not used for Oracle 10g clients. Perhaps you have some library conflict with two versions of Oracle on the machine?
