Sharpness issues with my canon. Not sure which lens would be best for video.

I have several lenses and I use the tamron 17-50.  My issue is that even though I do use manual focus, I don't seem
to get a very clear picture even with stills.   I even went inside canon to adjust the forcus and I am getting the same results.  I have 2 sony HDV FX7 that gives sharper  videos.  I would of thought Canon would of beat that!  Anyway, I am amature and still need to learn.  I have seen other videos that are so clear,  I really want to learn what I am doing wrong.
Canon 7d, Canon 50d, 2 sony FX7.

I can’t speak to video, but obviously that camera is capable of producing clear sharp images.  It’s hard to nail down the issue without seeing images and knowing your setup, but here’s a couple of possibilities:
A bad lens: it’s possible it just won’t lock on tact sharpness.  Do your other lenses have this issue?
Microadjustment: A lot of lenses are off focus by just a little bit.  But this is really only an issue at large apertures.  You can set the microfocus on your camera for each lens.  I’m assuming you just sent your camera to Canon, not the lens and camera together?
Camera Technique: are you using slow shutter speeds?  Maybe it’s camera shake.
Apertures:  Are you using apertures at the extreme ends of the scale?  Wide open will have a thin depth of field, so only a small portion of the picture will be sharp.  Conversely, if you stop down too much then diffraction will soften the entire image.
Filters: do you have any filters on the lens?  Cheap filters can soften images.
Also: are you shooting raw or jpg for stills? What program are you using for post-processing?

If your info is correct you need to first buy Snow Leopard from the Apple on-line store ($20) install and update to 10.6.8 and then buy Lion from the App Store for $20.

  • Which imac would work best for Graphic Design?

I am a Graphic Designer, currently using Creative Suite 2 (soon to be upgraded to CS3) and I need a new Mac for home. A Powermac takes up too much space, so I'm thinking about an imac with a 24" monitor and I have a few questions for the experts:)
Which imac would work best for graphics?
Is the monitor acurate for Pantone color matching?
Is the 24"monitor on the imac clear and bright?
    Is Leopard a stable OS?
I also need an (inexpensive) color laser printer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a bunch!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The 24" iMac uses a superior LCD panel to the 20" model and so is certainly better suited to your purposes. I don't know how badly having a piece of glass in front of the display would affect you as a designer though.
The display certainly is clear and bright. I use it on it's lowest brightness setting.
Leopard is stable but it's worth checking that drivers for any devices that you currently rely on are available. For example I have to go back to my 10.4.11 iMac G4 to use my scanner. Personally I can't get iCal to alarm in Leopard but that's a fairly minor gripe.
As this is the forum for much older iMacs I'd suggest re-posting in the Intel iMac forum and even Mac OS 10.5 Printing forums for better informed opinion:

  • [Solved]Setting up arch with Geforce 610m, not sure which drivers

Just as the subject states, I'm on an asus k53sd with a nvidia geforce 610m gpu and I'm not sure which drivers to install. I believe nvidia from the official repo is a necessary one but what else? There was also an intel based driver but I need to edit in what was since I can't remember.
    Last edited by cj360 (2013-10-21 22:37:21)

a GTX 610M is definitely not a legacy card. The 9800GT is, but yours definitely isn't. My laptop has a 480M, and still will be supported by the main drivers for a while. Even the 280 is still supported well in the latest drivers.
You are very likely using Optimus as pointed out by circleface. Especially as you mentionned using an Intel driver, I'm pretty sure you are on an Optimus laptop (like they almost all are since the past 3-4 years). Read this:  Optimus and this Bumblebee. You need a special configuration to have it work, involving optirun and prismrun.
You probably don't really need nvidia-xconfig especially if using Bumblebee. I think it does that by itself when it starts so you don't need to configure the hidden xorg server.

  • Which application is the best for video converter?

Which MacBook Pro application is the best for video converter?

Docs to go is a bit more polished i think. It has been around awhile on other platforms and the sync is very well done. It works more as an extension of your desktop. You select the files you want to sync. They can stay where they are on your computer. If changes are made to either they update when you sync.
Quick Office allows you to move documents to and from your iphone and Any computer on any network as well as your iDisk if you have MobileMe. It has a server built in. You just enter the web address into any browser and you can see the folders on the iphone. It will work with Word and Excel fine. It is tricky editing a spreadsheet on such a small screen but it can be done.
Docs to Go has a little bit better editor.
I guess it depends on whether you want to be able to transfer files to a computer other than your own.
    Hope that helps

  • Would Like to get an iPod but not sure which one would be the best for me..

i have done some research on the iPods, the easiest to use, which ones are best for fitness workouts, etc. I had an iPod Classic sometime ago but I ruined it because I tried to install the program it came with but it was already installed and the second install I did ruin it. At least this is what the genius bar guy said.
Anybody who knows iPods fairly well. I am new to my MacBook Pro and I would like to be able to synch the music in iTunes with the iPod for music for various activities. I also have trouble with the ear phones that come with the iPods, so I was looking at a website that had earphones ranging from $300 to $500 approx for people who have various needs in addition to using them at studios while mixing new music. I just want a pair that will stay in my odd shaped ears, have great quality, and work well with the iPods.
Any recommendations on iPod for exercise. I am not big on videos but having some good music gets me through a hard workout. One problem I have is that the genus guys could not fix the multiple setting, software, preference settings, etc. that had become corrupted in my old Mac and because several genius guys could not fix the numerous problems they gave me a new MacBook Pro. However, they recommended that since my problems were all setting, software issues and problems I have add with adding music in iTunes, that none of my pictures, music or setting be transferred to the new MBP but to start over. They did not even save any of my iTunes and pictures which I thought was odd but what could I say since they were giving me a new MBP. If anybody has a legal way of transferring from my friend;s iTunes the music he has that I can use for the yoga and mind-body classes I teach, which I am getting nervous on because I start the classes next week. I do not have the money to buy the yoga and other fitness music in hours like I use to have. My friend will let me transfer some of his music that he had from his own cds and some but few from iTunes, but that I could get them on myTunes if I could find out how to do that.
I researched that and since my friend did not care about atwork, artists of the songs on one cd, for example, the genre, tracks, artists, etc. he does have some but I would want to do the research and get the artwork and the titles of the various songs, the tracks, and all the info one gets when they transfer a new cd to iTunes. I had this problem with some of my old music but with google images, and finding the cd online I was able to get all the CDs accurate, even the double CDs that iTunes would have as one cd, but I figured out how to get them to one cd.
The ways ITunes Help advices on moving songs from one iTunes to another computer with iTunes, they recommend an iPod, transferring them to a DVD and burn the DVd on to my new MacBook Pro, with several other option that were beyond my ability to understand. If anybody has suggestions how to get my friend;s songs to my iTunes so I can have enough New Age and Yoga music for the classes that start next week, I would really appreciate it.
I also want to start backing up using time Machine and LaCie Rugged hard disk FW, USB, 400 0r 800 FW, 7200 speed, usb, etc. I am not up-to-date on the speed of the LaCie and if the 7200 speed would be a waste of money. Any recommendations for getting this device, not hooking it up to a wireless devise but to the Time Machine. If it does not come formatted for the new MacBook Pro and is it a big deal formatting the hard drive so I would be able to start using it right out of the box. Any suggestions n the iPod, and the LaCie rugged external hard drive would be a hugh help. I cannot afford a Time Capsule right now so I though the LaCie would be the next best thing
    Thanks!!

  • Which Macbook would be best for me?

I am currently in the market for a new laptop for university. I have one year left of my undergrad, and then two years postgrad, and it needs to see me through until the end. At the moment I am running a 2012 iMac and iPad Air, but I want to portability of the laptop. I find myself spending increasing time studying on campus and the word processing capabilities of the iPad just isn’t cutting it. My plan is to replace both units with a laptop, selling them to finance the bulk of the new unit.
My biggest dilemma however is whether or not I would be best suited to a 13 inch Macbook Air or the 13 inch Retina Macbook Pro.
I would be using the computer for approximately 5-6 hours on the days I have uni, during which time it would be used for basic note taking, word processing and internet browsing. Doing research my tabs can get intense, but nothing I think an air wouldn’t be able to handle. The 12 hours battery life is a big selling point here. Despite the 9 hour battery claims I am a bit sceptical about leaving the charger behind if I had a rMBP.
What is holding me back from jumping on the air however is my concern about its ability to play large 1080p movie files. I am a big movie nerd, and I don’t have a TV. I watch all of my video content on my computer. I both stream online and watch HD video from the iTunes store. My iMac handles this beautifully, but would the new air cut it when it comes to playing a 2 hour long HD movie? It would be a nightmare if every time I wanted to watch something it resulted in a heated, overworked machine trying to cool itself down with a loud whirring fan.
Whilst a retina display would be wonderful, I just cannot warrant all that the extra money on a machine that I will literally only be word processing and watching video on if an air would be up to it.
Can any Air owners, preferably those with later models, report on their experiences with watching video?
Any help would be appreciated! I’ve probably overthought the whole thing. What can I say? I’m a pieces.

  • Text Messaging Plans - Which plan would be best for me?

I tried looking all over the Verizon website but only found nation-wide plans for text messaging.
I currently pay $9.99 Data Package (Mobile Email) which I hardly use for my Samsung Reality phone. I saw that the offer said "Mandatory Data Package" so I asked the Best Buy Verizon representative there - he told me that even when Verizon says it's "mandatory", there are ways to get around it and that it wasn't mandatory. SO I foolishly thought he canceled it for me, later to find out we were billed for the $9.99 package. I called Verizon but to no avail, I was told it was mandatory. Enraged, I decided to just make the best of it. :'(
    1. Can I replace the $9.99 Data Package with a text messaging plan instead?
    2. What text messaging plans are available, and how much do they cost?
    3. Are there any text messaging plans that cover all four lines for me and family members? Or two? - Perferably cheapest and limited.
    Reasons:
    - My parents (two lines) don't see it necessary to use text messaging. So maybe a text messaging plan for two lines (for my sister and me).
    - I know there are times when sending a text is much more convenient and for college, I keep finding it more and more useful to have (i.e. professors that accept texts as urgent communication, texting a roommate or friends to ask a quick question without having to feel as if you've called them in class or at a wrong time, etc .. and also to text my family to let them know I'm okay when we're all busy with our lives (calling would be best of course!)) - (as well as it's social benefits ;D ) SO I'm wondering if there is any plan that would best fit the needs of my family members & myself.

If you have Talk minutes only you can add:
$5/mo for 250 texts (sent and received)
$10/mo for 500 texts PLUS unlimited texts M2M
    $20/mo for 5000 texts PLUS unlimited M2M
This is per line, and each line on a family plan can have its own bundle.
It makes more sense to bump up to the Talk & Text plan and get unlimited texting on all lines, if you have 3 or more phones and everyone likes to text! You have to determine what you can afford, how much texting you will do to figure out what will work for you.
If you can get by with 250 texts a month, the $5 plan may work (but they go fast, believe me!!)  For $10, you can have 500 texts plus all your texts between you and your sister and other Verizon phones are not part of the 500 limit, they are unlimited.
For $30 (the cost increase from the Talk plan to the Talk & Text plan), all of the phones on your family plan will  have unlimited texting to anyone on any network.  My suggestion would be to try the limited plans first, then bump it up if you keep getting close or going over your limit.

I have an Apple Mac Pro.  It is almost 7 years old and will not accept FCP X.  I have been waiting for Apple to make a new Mac Pro, but  I don't know when that will happen.
    Any recommendations?

Do not put new money today into Mac Pro 2008 or previous. (the FBDIMM memory is too expensive).
Some say skip the 2009 model as the 2010 is better (has built-in support for hex processors) but not a lot more money.
Computers will always be better, faster, and cheaper if you wait. [A new Mac Pro may not be solid on day 1.] At some point, you have to get your work done, and just have to hold your nose and choose from what is avaiable and stable at the moment.

  • Which forum would be best for this question?

We have an application written in VB6 that utilizes ADO and Microsoft Jet and Replication, specifically Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.5 Library and Microsoft Jet and Replication Objects 2.5 Library. The application has been in daily use in hundreds
of government offices for 11 years. The database part of the application has been very stable until recently. We started noticing a problem in about October 2013. Sometimes when the user looks up some specific account, the application will return an error
that says "record has been deleted". If we run a JRO compact routine that we utilize in our backup process, the problem is fixed. It is my assumption that this JRO compact routine is the same process that is run in Access 2000 when I ckick Tools
    > Database Utilities > Compact and Repair Database. The code that calls the JRO.CompactDatabase is listed below.
        Dim jro1 As JRO.JetEngine
        Set jro1 = New JRO.JetEngine
        'compressDatabase
        jro1.CompactDatabase "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & XXmdb, _
        "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & BUmdb
        Set jro1 = Nothing
(*** NOTE: the JRO routine is the current best solution to our problem, not in any way we know of the cause of the problem.)
We are unable to duplicat the error except to the extent that if the problem exists in a mdb file we can, after we are told which account to access, see the error when we look up that account. We have not been able to find out how or when the error / problem
/ corruption is created in our application.
We expect that some routine or process that is run on an account, under certain conditions, encounters an error or creates a corruption and that this error, due to some error handling routine or lack of one, goes un-noticed at the time the corruption happens.
This error has occured maybe 50 times since October 2012. If the error occured prior to that time, it occured so seldom that we have no memory of it. The office in which this error occurs most often did install a new server with new server software the first
week of October. The problem has happened in maybe 5 offices in addition the the office mentioned. We do not think this problem is caused by any version updates to have made.
Any ideas as to what or why?
Thanks for your help, John Brown

I'll have to move this off-topic because as Cor says, VB6 is dead and gone as far as support is concerned.  There is a sticky thread at the top of these VB forums which also contains some links to VB6 resources.
That said, it sounds to me like you've reached the limit of the access database.
This error is COMMON with old access databases once they reach a certain size and age.  You will have to continually perform the compact and repair when these errors occur and they will continue to occur periodically now that the database has reached
a certain size and level of activity.  As records are deleted, the error will reappear.
The solution is to move onto SQL for the database since you have obviously exceeded what an access database was meant to handle.

  • 3D or smart TV, which one would be best for living room?

This time I have planned to upgrade my 5 years old Vizio TV to any 2012 smart TV. I want a good looking display screen for my living room, price isn’t the issue for me though, TV design and picture quality are. I am debating between 3d or smart TV from LG, Samsung and Vizio but, all the other options would be welcome as well.

CNET also noted the best in "features" (this would largely weight in "smart" options) as the Samsung ES series being 1st place then the LGs noted above by Dval coming in a close second.
Rwillen is correct also as plasmas own the PQ market. 3 or 4 of this years model got a "10" by cnet and I think the closest LEDs were Elite and XBR at an 8 ( I think) with the LGs coming in at "7" or lower.
So the question is more of what you weight your opinion on. Obviously it's going to be give and take, just read reviews and judge for yourself what is the important factors are as each person is different.

    Hey,
if i'm not mistaken you press the left alt key , right next to the cmd key.
I don't know how to get into the bios and i do not believe you can select an os to boot by default other than windows and mac os x, after you install grub it should be defaulted by efibootmgr but if you tell mac os x you'd rather boot from it you'll have to re bless grub :

if all this crap is too much for you, you can always go for refind which is really easy to install and remove. just google refind and install it in mac os x, uninstalling it is as easy as deleting it from the /EFI folder on the mac os x partition if i'm not mistaken.
