Sharpness of NEF raw conversion for landscape photo is poor compared to ViewNX raw conversion

Raw conversion in ViewNX is far sharper than Aperture for some photos, enough so to differentiate as usable or unusable images. I tried adjusting sharpness and edges sliders in "RAW Fine Tuning" adjustments but even at maximum is terribly blurry compared to default ViewNX raw conversion. Overall color and dynamic range seem better in ViewNX for landscape shots but not critical like the blurriness... the difference is profound so I think I'm doing something wrong or the 3.2 update may have a serious bug. Anyone else have thisissue?
Aperture 3.2:
ViewNX:

I was talking with some others in another forum and someone suggested ViewNX may be automatically applying settings from camera default picture settings. So I just checked and in
menu->shooting menu->set picture control
(Nikon D90)
the standard "SD" setting is set to sharpen value 7 on a scale of 0-9.  Sounds like ViewNX is reading that value and applying some very strong sharpening in software on the raw image. However, I'd expect to set the Aperture RAW fine tune sharping adjustment to 100% and get reasonable close to similar sharpness. At this point I think I understand the issue but I also feel that ViewNX is much better able to sharpen the RAW image while introducing less unwanted artifacts.  It's a pretty significant point and I'd be quite happy to see improvement in sharpness from Aperture RAW conversion of NEF files.
I don't suppose there is any way I can configure Aperture to use the Nikon RAW converter? I'd love to have the option to choose or switch back and forth depending on the picture and results. There are times I prefer Apertures converter to Nikons.

  • Basic image adjustments for landscape photos

I am wondering what some basic adjustments are in Aperture that people make to their landscape photos. I am at a high altitude, and many of my pics are bright and sometimes a little washed out. I use Auto Contrast sometimes, but then it sometimes goes too far, and appears too dark. I was just wondering if there are some routine adjustments that one can make to enhance the image, without making it look unnatural. Something just to take out the haze, without affecting color.

    Hello Pritch,
I would recommend to adapt the camera to high altitude conditions, rather then to do too much post processing.

There are three scattering effects that do influence pictures at high altitudes: Rayleigh scattering, caused by scattering of the molecules of the atmosphere that tints the pictures blue,  Mie-Scattering and non-selective scattering from small particles (pollen, dust, fog) that makes them appear hazy and washed out. The amount of corruption depends on the meteoroligal conditions, only the Rayleigh scattering is always present.
At what altitude are you? Do you know, if the CCD-Sensor in your camera blocks UV-light completely  (some Sony sensors do) or lets some of  the UV pass? If the latter were the case, then you will notice quite a lot of Rayleigh-scattering from blue and UV light turning your pictures blue at high altitudes, and you might consider to use a Skylight filter or even an UV Filter; in lower terrain that usually is unnecessary, since the lens absorbs most of the UV.
For landscape photograpy the filter should be a flare less one, otherwise the lens flare will spoil the picture.
And - if you do not do it already - correct the white balance at the time you take the picture, the default white balance settings of the camera usually are optimized for lower terrain.
To correct the effects of Rayleigh scattering after taking the picture you have to adjust the colors selectively to dim the blue, depending on the amount of additive blue in the picture. A white balance correction might do that if you are lucky.
The Mie scattering and non selective scattering reduce the contrast and dim the colors by adding white to the picture. To compensate them you would need a white-subtraction filter (not white balance), Aperture does not have it.
But you can achieve quite good results with a combination of black point correction, enhance definition, enhance contrast, and a slight increase of saturation. I cannot recommend default settings for these filters, because the amount of correction needed will depend on the meteorological conditions. Also, you may not want to remove the haze completely, because it will give depth to the picture and might be artistically pleasing.
A nice example on how to deal with haze is in this thread

  • Transfering photos in NEF ( RAW ) fomat from a Nikon D700

The transfer of NEF (RAW) format photos from the new Nikon D700 does not work and generates a - file unreadable - prompt. Jpeg format photos do transfer ok into iPhoto08 from the same D700 .
Also, NEF format pictures transfers from a D200 or a D300 work ok.
Anyone with a solution plse ? Tks in adv .

You might try converting that RAW file to DNG (Adobe Digital Negative). Adobe has a DNG converter that might work for you. iPhoto will accept DNG files.
    Adobe DNG Converter Application
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • NEF(raw) photos turn into jpg when i drag from iphoto to my desktop?

why do my NEF(raw) photos from my nikon D90 turn into jpg when i drag them from iphoto to my desktop? i can not work on them in PS unless i dig into the original files in the masters list. i download them from the card, both go in, and if i look at the info it says that they are both there one in jpg and one in raw format side by side.  what am i missing and how can i drag the raw photo onto the desktop keep it in that format so that i can then put into PS.

thank you just tried and worked just fine, did not set any advanced options but opened up in PS any way.
well i have one other q that maybe you can answer, when i send photos to folks from iphoto, through macmail, no one can download the photos and keep on their 'puter. several years ago this changed and i have never found the answer. i will put on my desktop zip the photos and send that way. is their another??

  • RAW JPEG PROBLEM  I'm new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

I’m new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW+JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

How did you import from iPhoto? If you saw the Import panel with raw -jpeg pairs, then you probably did not import your iPhoto library as library, but as files, and then you will see plenty of duplicates - previews, thumbnails, originls, edited versions. If that should be the case, it would be better to delete the import from iPhoto and to import your iPhoto library again, but this time using "File > Import > Library".
Only that would require compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture.  What are your Aperture and iPhoto version numbers?

I don't know the answer, personally, because I don't use Lightroom. This is the Camera Raw forum.

  • Does Aperture support NEF RAW files for the Nikon D810?

I am unable to open NEF RAW files for my new Nikon D810.  Are there any updates of suggestions.

Apple has not yet reverse-engineered a RAW update for the d810. I would suggest that you shoot RAW +JPEG with all your NEF images on the CF card and put your JPEG optimal fine images on the SD card in slot 2. Save your NEF images and CF cards until the Aperture 3.5.1 RAW update for the d810 finally is available. In the meantime, you will have JPEG optimal images on your SD cards that you can import and process in Aperture. Good Luck.

    What is N-OS?
For the camera raw problem, every new camera has its own raw format and ACR must be updated to include it. That hasn't happened yet for the D5500, so you'll just have to use the Nikon software till Adobe gets the info and releases an updated version of ACR. It's not unusual to be in your situation if you buy a camera model that's only been out a month. You just have to wait a bit.

    Hi,
I'm from germany so no 'best buy' but I think I will lock around sleeve/bag for a different product with same measures. Any tip?
The clear plastic case is not what I want. I would like to use the player without such protections. I just want a sleeve to protect the player while its in my jacket/pants.
Btw, i have bought this version: Creative Zen (maybe european version?). I also doesn't seem to have your mentioned sleeve. I also couldn't find it on the website.
    Anyway, thank you,

  • Drop zones for both portait and landscape photos?

I'm looking to create a template similar to the Appletv screen saver. I can figure out how to stack the photos in 3D and do motion paths. My question is specifically how to create drop zones into which I can drop either portrait or landscape photos without having to worry about them getting squeezed or cut off. Or is there some other software I need to use?

Thanks so much to both of you. Mark, you are exactly right. I would like to be able to somehow dump a bunch of photos, regardless of orientation, into existing drop zones and have them look correct. I tried placing a portrait photo into the existing drop zones in the appletv motion project and it cropped it. On the actual Appletv itself, it does not crop or squeeze portrait photos.
Do you know of any workarounds to help me do what I would like to do, other than learning how to program core animation?

  • Cant import NEF RAW images into Photoshop Elements 9.

before anyone says i have the updated camera raw plug in because i have already looked so it should work, but it doesnt.
i took the images with the Nikon D3200 i NEF RAW format.
but photoshop kept on saying that the format was not supported, i was opening them up through FILE, OPEN, then i was browsing for the photos, but it would keep ion saying that the file was not supported.
but then i saw some where that you ha to open the image up through OPEN AS, so i did it that way, and for a moment it looked like it was working but then photoshop elements 9 crashed and it said it couldnt open up the image due to problem, can someone help me.
for the time being i will just use the JPEG images because i took and NEF RAW image and a JPEG image at the same time, which later on i will just replace the image with the NEF RAW image when i get it to work.
but until then cam some one help me try to get it to work, thank you.

before anyone says i have the updated camera raw plug in because i have already looked so it should work, but it doesnt.
The problem is that PSE9 will not support the version of camera raw that is needed for D3200 RAW files.
To make use of these D3200 RAW files, you need to download the FREE Adobe DNG Converter (version 8.2) and then use that software to convert the RAW to DNG.
Alternatively, you could purchase PSE 12, and then your D3200 RAW files will open properly without need for a converter.

  • Lightroom 4.4 will not import NEF RAW files from Nikon D610

I shoot a Nikon D800 and have never had any issues importing my NEF RAW files into Lightroom. I borrowed a friend's Nikon D610 and shot a bunch of NEF RAW files. I downloaded them to my computer the same way I always do. For some reason, Lightroom will not import them. The error message is: "The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. (455)"
My Lightroom 4.4 is current and up-to-date.
Bottom line: I have a bunch of RAW photo files I can't import into Lightroom for editing. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    >Just curious -- is there some difference between the NEF files created on my Nikon D800 (which are easily imported into Lightroom) and the NEF files created on the Nikon D610 (which are not easily imported into Lightroom)
Lightroom 5 supports the D610. There is a big difference between nef from the D610 and older cameras. They were shot with a camera that Adobe hadn't profiled yet when LR 4.4 was out. Otherwise, if you hack the nef files to read that they were shot on a D600, LR 4.4 will read them, but I would caution against doing that as the sensor is slightly different on the D610 than on the D600, resulting in differences in color rendering. Simplest is as dj says to convert the nets to dng (which embeds the newer profiles in the file) or to upgrade to LR 5.
