Shatter effect question

Hello so this is my first after effect EFFECT so im kind of slow but learning as fast as i can. Basically i took a still ima
ge then applied shatter to it. made it a video and everything works but the thing is i want the still image to be 6-7  seconds long THEN the shatter effect to take place and ive been through all the shatter settings and im really new to after effects if anyone can help thanks!
basically the shatter effect that im usin is just the default one where the glass breaks or whatever

I can save you some time by just pushing the "report abuse" button for you.
Shatter is one of the more complex effects in AE. It requires a solid working foundation in physics, keyframes, 3D, and something Shatter-heads we call anticipation. That's kind of seeing into the future that comes only with several dozen failed Shatter projects.
Only bricks that are touched by the force sphere can move so it is the radius setting which controls which bricks are allowed to start moving. If the radius is set to 0, no bricks are touched by the sphere and so no bricks move.
But just because a brick has been touched by one of the two spheres doesn't mean it's going to start moving. The sphere ust gives it permission to move. The rest of the physical forces must be set properly to impart their forces onto the bricks.
Complaining about Shatter not working for you won't help. You've got to just keep slogging away at the tutorials and the printed documentation until you start to understand how the dozens of control interact. But you OP states you're new to AE. My suggestion is to forget Shatter until you've learned much more of the basics. Then attack Shatter again in a few weeks. You won't believe how much easier it is to make it work. And, if you watch the Shatter tutorials again, you'll see how the authors talk to the settings to achieve remarkable effects that go far beyond explosions. I use Shatter often. I love it.

  • How to add motion blur to the shatter effect?

I am trying to add motion blur to the shatter effect, iv created my own custom shatter map with text that remains after the effect is complete, i have tried to add motion blur through the other blur effects and i have not found one that will do the motion blur correctly.
what im wanting is for there to be motion blur on the pieces that are shattering, any suggestions?

There are suggestions toward the bottom of this page, including a tip using the Timewarp effect. I found this by searching for 'motion blur'.

  • How to Make the Shatter Effect Travel Outside the Original Comp

    Hey guys,
So I'm trying to shatter a jpg image that I imported into After Effects 5.5, all is going well with the look, but I'm having a problem.  The shatter has the pieces floating upward as intended, but the pieces are disappearing at the border of the image. It would appear the image itself bounds the effect so that pieces cannot float beyond into the remainder of the composition area.
Is there a way to make it so the pieces can float out beyond where the image is? Thanks in advace.

Is this the effect you're trying to achieve?
If so, it was created by scaling down a red solid and pre-comping it using the following settings.
Then go back to your original composition and apply your shatter effect to the pre-comp.

  • How to control the shatter effect in Aperture 3

I am using Aperture 3 on an iMac, but have trouble trying to control the shatter effect in slideshow, I would like to be able to slow this down in order to see the effect in slow motion
    Can anybody help please?

Nope, it's a default.  Some themes let you do it, not the Shatter theme.

  • I  need help with Shatter effect

For the first time in my life I've chosen this effect. I'll be quick, I need to blow up Moon, but when I put shatter to it I can't see the moon anymore, I tweaked those settings, nothing. I can only see the trajectory of Moon's revolution I created. Any help tweaking those settings?

There are resources here that show you how to use the Shatter effect.
You description of your problem isn't very clear (Screenshots help.), but I'll venture a guess:
You haven't set View to Rendered in the Effect Controls panel for the effect. So, you're just seeing the wireframe representation of the forces and such.
Please, do us all a favor and read the documentation for features before using them and while you use them. There's a search box in the upper-right of the application window.

  • Shatter effect not working?!

    Hi,
I am trying to shatter a freeze frame from a video, yet when i apply the shatter effect on, all that comes up is the end of the animation, so like the shatter has already happened and only the outside 'bricks' and left with no animation before hand, i would really appriciate it if you would help me,
    thanks

It sounds like you need to have the Shatter effect's forces begin to operate at a later time than they're currently acting. See this section for information about animating the force controls.

  • Shatter effect not working completely

Using the shatter effect on a 6 second composition.  By six seconds i want the shatter to have blown in from the right and show the words.  The shatter works but at 6 seconds the words aren't fully solid. How come some of the text looks like it is still shattered?

When you say size do you mean the depth of it?

  • How to make a shatter effect in cinema 4D

    Hi
I'm trying to use the shatter effect in Cinema4d but in the lite version available through AE the collision and simulation tags are not available. So how one can use it without the simulation and collide tags  available?
    Claude

Yes but how? I've a tutorial and in the process you have to use the simulation and collide tags which are not available unless there has been a problem while the installation of the program was done?
The whole problem is that I have to break a building and I tried as you suggested the other day with Shatter to use a gradient but I must have used it wrongly because it did not work. This morning I found on Creative Cow a way to stop the pieces falling by setting with a key frame the gravity to 0 and viscosity to 1 but the result is rather artificial  as some of the pieces stop falling in mld air which is ridiculous. I tried then Cinema 4d following Sean Frangella tutorial and that's when I discovered that the essential commands were missing in the lite edition. I must say I find it a bit harsh to put a link to a software knowing that essentials commands will be absent.
I'm not petroleum magnate to spend the price of any of Maxon's offers for the full product. I'm an amateur trying to have a kind of original editing of his videos.

  • Initiating an explosion with the Shatter effect

Guys thanks again for all your help.  Now I am trying to create an explosion with a shatter effect.  Problem is when I apply the shatter effect to my Shape I created, it assumes I want the explosion to occur as soon as the video starts to play.  Actually I would like the explosion to occur a little later in the video, maybe about 25 frames into the video.  I can not find a setting to key frame the start of the explosion.  Is there a key frame for this and I am not seeing it?  I even tried moving the shape out in the timeline so it does not appear until about the 25 frame, but this does not work either.
    Thanks again
    Let me know

Like I said previously "Problem is when I apply the shatter effect to my Shape I created, it assumes I want the explosion to occur as soon as the video starts to play."  This is not what I want.  I need a key frame to initiate the explosion about 25 frames into the clip.  The physics controls the location on the screen and the direction of the explosion, but to my knowledge it does not control the timing of the explosion.  I have viewed Lynda tutorials repeatedly.
The tutorials make it look like it is possible to start an explosion later in the timeline but there is no explanation of how he did it.  It looks like the explosion should occur when the "Shape" occurs in the time line, but After Effects is not working that way for me.

  • Shatter Effect : Is this a Bug?

    Hi
I was using the shatter effect last week (AE CS3, Mac OS 10.5.2, Mac Pro) after not having used it for years. Anyway, I had a layer which I wanted to shatter at the end. So I split the layer where I wanted the effect to occur and added the shatter effect to the end half. However all I could see in the layer was the final state of the shatter effect. Despite being applied to a separate layer (the beginning having been effectively trimmed off with the split) the effect was still being applied from the start of the media! I expected the effect to apply only to the visible footage.
I won't lie and say this didn't cost me a lot of time ... I tried to repeat the effect on another computer... but used the whole clip as a sample and so it worked fine! Then I started ploughing through plug in versions .... I'll leave it there! However when I finally twigged that the effect was always operating on the whole media clip I was able to work around by animating the radius from the clip start to it's IN point on my layer.
Seems odd though.... unworkable on a long clip!
Is this a bug? Or am I missing something fundamental?
    Thanks
    Lee

Sounds to me like you've missed the most important part of controlling shatter. There's never a need to split a layer. All you have to do is animate the force size, or value, or position to shatter the layer where and when you want it to.
Shatter is based on a real world model. In real life, if you want to shatter something you have to apply a force to an object. In AE you can adjust and animate the size of the force, the position of the force, and the amount of the force. Set size to 0 and nothing will happen. Move the force behind or in front of the layer and nothing will happen. Set the value of the force to 0 and nothing will happen. It's just like real life. By default Force 1 is set to break apart most of your layer. Force 2 is available for a second kick to the pieces.
I've never figured out why most users seem to miss this concept. If force 1 is 0 then there's nothing to make the layer shatter. Just set it to 0, Set the keyframe as a hold keyframe, then move down the time line to where you want the effect to begin and add value to the force 1.
You should also try moving the position of the force or animating the size.

  • Shatter effect bug?

I've used shatter effect before - and when you apply it and preview, it should give you a generic shatter - that you can then modify.
I'm getting nothing. tried to apply it in the middle of a clip - looked at tghe head to see if it put it there - no.
anyone else having problems? it's almost like the default settings aren't working.

The effect always recognizes the in-point as the start of the action (if you don't keyframe the forces and such). Are you sure you are not seeing nothing simply because the simulation part is already over and at the point it has returned to the initial state? Also, do perhaps the first few frames only contain transparent areas so it does not render any visible stuff?

  • If you need help quickly... Guideline for posting an effective question.

Whenever you have a question that you would like answered, do pose that question effectively.
First, do not assume that because you have tried many, many times that your question is understood by someone else. What is obvious to you may not be for another. So please state in a very detailed and structured way what steps you have taken to cause your problem, how you can replicate this problem, under what circumstances on what hardware/software.
The fact that you have nearly given up because of your problem does not mean that someone else can readily understand this problem. When you go to your doctor and say: "I have a pain in my stomach" he will ask you a lot of questions. Same applies here. Your doctor may need to know about any medication you have taken, your blood pressure, history, etc. If you want help, be as PRECISE and ACCURATE as possible.
Second, this is a USER TO USER forum. So ranting will not help. What may help is a STRUCTURED approach to describing the problem you have.
Third, do a thorough search of posts here, on other fora and with Google before repeating what has been asked a thousand times and has worn out the patience of regulars here, who have answered your question a dozen times already. Use the FAQ and the Wiki to find answers to questions that have been posed and answered repeatedly. Do not assume you are unique with your problem. Well, you are unique, the problem you have most likely is not.
Fourth, realize that even though it may be highly frustrating to you to not be able to solve YOUR problem, by posting your question here, you are dependent on fellow editors to help you on their free time without compensation, so bear with them to help identify what EXACTLY is your problem. If you lack that decency, you may forfeit their help, so why did you come here?
Fifth, consider your work flow in light of the purpose of Premiere, an editing package. If you have problems with rotoscoping, programming with APL, spreadsheets in general, word processing on a mobile phone, importing Panda bears into a local zoo, feeding nearly distinct whales in the Alps, or anything far removed from the purpose of PP, you may be better off in posting your question elsewhere.

The most frustrating issues one can encounter are hangs, BSOD's (blue screens of death), system errors and other cases of seemingly random erros that require rebooting, restarting or similar actions, only to be confronted with the next hang, BSOD or system crash.
These errors are often difficult to locate, due to the large variety of systems, components and driver or software versions in use. This is often further aggravated by sheer lack of expertise, understanding of what needs to be communicated in order for others to help solve the issue at hand. And that list is very long.
So, in order to make it a bit simpler for the average user who encounters these problems, follow the following steps when posting a problem:
    1. Clearly describe the main problem in the topic, but be brief. Not so brief as to only say: "Help!" or "URGENT" or another meaningless statement but get to the point, like: "PP crashes on opening, requiring a reboot" or "Using DL the system hangs upon return to PP". You get the point.
    2. Briefly describe your hardware, software, OS and versions in use, including disk setup, video card and driver versions, etc.
    3. Describe source material, including codec (not AVI, which is not a codec), project settings and other relevant info.
    4. Describe as accurately as possible what you did, what steps you took, what happened at what moment and what you did to try to resolve it.
    5. Go to Start/Run, type in DXDIAG, enter and save all information to a TXT file. Include a link to that file in your post.
    6. Go to Start/Run, type in MSINFO32 (or similar for 64 bit OS), enter and save the results as a .NFO file. Include a link to that file in your post.
    7. Download Process Explorer , and either post a screen shot or a link to the results.
    8. Make a screen shot of the results of SpeedFan or HW Monitor and include that in your post.
When you perform these basic steps, you avoid endless questions about your system and people may be able to help you faster.

Question for the professionals:  How can I create a “channel change” with distortion, etc. effect on Final Cut Pro?  I need it for a sketch so with each segue, or scene, it looks like the “viewer” changed the channel.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Browser and transition/effects questions

Sorry Guys n Gals, me again!
    Simple q's for you all...
Firstly, when I view browser by "large icons" is there anyway I can arrange the clips by order they were captured? I can do this as a list but for some reason cant do it in "large icon" view!
Secondly, when I apply a transition or effect can I preview it (like in i-movie) before rendering it?
    Thanks

    Ta Gary.
Bit of a bu**er that Apple didn't allow us to have order of capture easier on icon view!! I really dont think I have the patience to re-label all my captured clips after I've captured em!!
Oh, and after I typed the [stupid] question of "how to preview effects/transitions" I realised how stupid a question it was. I think I've figured it out now!
Now just wait for my next silly question/s............

  • Spry Effects questions

I have two (2) questions about using the Spry Effects script in a horizontal slide configuration.
    Question 1:
In DW CS4 if I add the command <duration: 500,> the numerals turn red.  I also get an error in line ???? from DW which is the line the variable is on.  If I go ahead and accept the change I see the desired quicker slide in Firefox and Safari.  The default is 1,000 milliseconds so I am cutting it in half.  But!  In Internet Explorer 7 the script locks the browser window up.  Even if I revert to the saved HTML and JS files the problem still persists.  This problem also occurs if I set the duration higher than 1,000 milliseconds.
This also happens if I upload the files to the Internet.  I was forced to redo the line in question and copy my saved SpryEffects.js over to my working directory.  This unlocked the file in Internet Explorer 7.  Any suggestions on how to get the quicker response time in Internet Explorer 7?
    Question 2:
In Firefox I get a border around the button that enacts the Spry Effect.  I set the text decoration to "none" for both of the IDs for the images.  This thin line does not appear in Internet Explorer 7 or Safari 4.0.3.  My version of Firefox is version 3.5.3.
The file can be viewed here.
    Thank you in advance.

I have also found that the Spry works better in FireFox than
IE7, when it comes to video

Check out this page and you will see that the Spry tabbed
menu stops the video in FireFox but not in Explorer. I have seen
