Shell Script - Sleep
Hello All,
We are printing pdf file outputs from shell script. Here we faced a problem that the shell script tried to access the output file(pdf file) while the concurrent program is running. For that we added the concurrent program names into shell script programs incompatibility list. This is working fine.
But there are more than 20 reports using the same shell script. If all the programs are running shell script waits until all the 20 programs completed.
I am thinking of another solution that, I have to issue a sleep command in shell script until the program completes, or until the output file is generated and the shell script can generate post script file from the output file.
I dont know what kind of lock the concurrent program is using, because shell script says no such file or directory while generating post script file.
Kindly help.
You would probably find more concurrent manager experts in the Apps forums. You could try using the output of ps -ef to see if the program your script should wait for is still running. Or you can use the lsof command to see if the file you are supposed to process is still open in another process. For example, lsof -f -- /output/my.pdf shows all processes that have the file /output/my.pdf open.

How to call a shell script from a java code
Hello can any one suggest me how to call a shell script from a java program that takes three parameters.
i have a shell script (msp_restore_gui) when i run this script in the command line in a RHEL5 ,SUSE10 and Debian machine it works fine .I even tested to call it from a java program and it also worked fine but when i used the same in a J2ee application where the user when clicks the restore button in a webserver this inturn sends the request to a java file named BackupManager.java where i call the shell script.But here it fails.Waiting for your suggestions.If you want i can put the code also hereyes the script is in /usr/local/mss/tools/backup and the script (msp_restore_gui) is as follows

Random SP2 error when starting oracle process through SHELL script
Hi All,
I am trying to process data in n-Number of tables through a package. The package is called through a shell script to create start data processing. All calls to the package are in a sql script which is basically exec calls-
exec package.process ('T1','some param');
exec package.process ('T1','some param');
exec package.process ('T..n','some param');
I have a shell script which I use to execute commands from the sql script. There is a reason behind using shell script. For some strange reason, I keep on getting -
ERROR: logon denied - check for valid user with valid privileges
SP2-0640: Not connected
SP2-0641: "EXECUTE" requires connection to server
SP2-0640: Not connected
for some EXEC calls. Problem is, errors are generated at random. So in one run, I get error for T10,T11 and then in next run I might get for some other tables.
However, when I am running the sql script from the sql prompt, all calls to the package are executed without any problem.
This makes me think, it is something to do with the way database connection being initiated through UNIX.
Has anyone faced similar issue? Your help/gudence is much appreciated.
DB: Oracle 10.2.0.5
OS: SUN Solaris 10
Thanks in advance.Login credentials are provided inside the shell script.
I did put a sleep(10) after EOF but no help. As mentioned if I run script file from sql promt, it runs without any hiccup. So it is the connection through the UNIX that is causing issue.
As pointed out by Sybrand, I agree that it does not make a sense to connect and commit after every sql statement. So decided to change the shell script and so far, the result from my initial tests on a sample data is quite encouraging. Hopefully I will have a solution.
But it will be nice to know why SHELL is doing what it is doing!!
Legacy prog are sometime big time eye-openers..;) -
Help changing permissions using a shell script
Hey,
Here's the situation. We have 18 Macs, they're all cloned from a master image and have 2 local accounts - Administrator and Student.
There are some files on the machines that the student account does not have permission to access, but it's critical that they do. I've written a shell script to change the files so that everyone has permission to read, write and execute them:
#! /bin/bash
clear
sudo chmod ugo+rwx /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components/FM8.component
sudo chmod ugo+rwx /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST/FM8.vst
sudo chmod ugo+rwx /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST/FM8\ FX.vst
sudo chmod ugo+rwx /Library/Application\ Support/Digidesign/Plug-ins/FM8.dpm
In theory, this means I can just run the script, type the admin password in once and its done (as opposed to typing in the password 4 times and navigating to each file individually.)
However, this doesn't quite work as planned.
If I run the script, navigate to the files using the Finder and 'get info' it declares that "Everyone" can "Read & Write". The student account can see the file properly, but the finder just thinks there's nothing there (Size=Zero KB.) Only when I explicitly add the Student account (Add->Student) and set it to "Read & Write" does it start working.
2 questions really - Why does it do this, and how do I make it work?
It was my understanding that if everyone could read, write and execute there wouldn't be a problem, regardless of which account tries to access the file?
Also, if there is a better/easier/faster way of doing the same thing I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks.Thanks Tony,
Your reply was helpful, I didn't realise you could tie all the paths together and just use one chmod command.
I actually solved the issues myself this morning (fresh head on after a good nights sleep!)
It turns out the 'files' I'm trying to modify aren't strictly files at all, they're packages. Using just chmod changes permissions for the top of the package only (hence why I could see the files but they said Zero KB.)
adding -R to the chmod modified permissions to everything inside the package as well, which has resolved the issue.
Thanks for the help though! -
[SOLVED] advanced shell script for mount and unmount samba share
Good morning guys,
Today I've a very long question....
Hope in your help....:
I usually move from different network.
For one of those I need to mount some share that are under an ActiveDirectory server.
To do that I use samba.
Especially I've made and use the below shell script.
I know that it's so stupid but I'm a very newbie:
#!/bin/sh
echo "This is a custom script for mount my citrix share"
echo "Please insert user password (must a sudoer user)"
echo " "
sudo mount -t cifs -o username='myusername',password='mypassword' //host_ip/TsHome$/myusername /home/myuser/samba_share/TsHOME
sudo mount -t cifs -o username='myusername',password='mypassword' "//host_ip/direction" /home/myuser/samba_share/direction
echo " "
read -p "Press ENTER key to close this terminal"
exit
As I say the script work but it's so crude...!
I want/need to implement it whit the follow addictions:
1. print a feedback on mount: somenthing like "TsHOME is now mounted" or "unable to mount TsHOME"
2. check if the share are already mounted: to prevent accidentally multiple mount. If a share is already mounted I want to print something like "TsHOME is already mounted on /home/myuser/samba_share/TsHOME"
3. ask for share password (now it's in clear on script) - This is optinal
4. un-mount the share before reboot or shutdown command. That because I've notice that If i reboot or shutdown without manually un-mount the share the step of unmounting network file system became very slow
If it's no extremely difficult, can someone help me to write this script?
I know that man exist but I'm not a programmer and it's so difficult for me approch it.
Thank you in advance.
Ale
Last edited by Alexbit (2010-09-23 21:29:13)Thank you very (VERY) much!
I've follow your information and.. it work!
If can be usefull to other this is the complete script:
#!/bin/sh
echo "This is a custom script for mount citrix share"
echo "****************************************"
echo " "
echo "Please insert domain password:"
read -s mypassword
echo " "
echo "|checking mount state...in share are not mounted mount it!|"
echo "+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+"
if grep "TsHome" /etc/mtab &>/dev/null; then
grep "TsHome" /etc/mtab | awk '{print "TsHome is already mounted on " $2}'
else
sudo mount -t cifs -o username='yourusername',password="$mypassword" //ipaddress/TsHome$ /home/Samba_share/TsHOME && echo "TsHOME is now mounted" || echo "unable to mount TsHOME"
fi
echo " "
if grep "direction" /etc/mtab &>/dev/null; then
grep "direction" /etc/mtab | awk '{print "direction is already mounted on " $2}'
else
sudo mount -t cifs -o username='yourusername',password="$mypassword" '//ipaddress/direction' /home/Samba_share/direction' && echo "direction pat is now mounted" || echo "unable to mount direction"
fi
echo " "
if grep "Area" /etc/mtab &>/dev/null; then
grep "Area" /etc/mtab | awk '{print "Area is already mounted on " $2}'
else
sudo mount -t cifs -o username='yourusername',password="$mypassword" '//ipaddress/Area' /home/Samba_share/Area && echo "Area is now mounted" || echo "unable to mount Area"
fi
echo " "
echo "All DONE!"
echo " "
read -p "Press ENTER key to close this terminal"
exit
I don't really well understand what I've to put in rc.local.shutdown....
I think somethings like:
#!/bin/bash
# /etc/rc.local.shutdown: Local shutdown script.
echo "This is a custom script for UN-mount citrix share"
echo "********************************************"
echo " "
echo "|check mount state: if mount then un-mount!|"
echo "+-------------------------------------------------------+"
echo " "
if grep "TsHome" /etc/mtab &>/dev/null; then
grep "TsHome" /etc/mtab | awk '{print "TsHome is NOT mounted -> going on..." $2}'
else
sudo umount /home/Samba_share/TsHOME && echo "TsHOME is now UN mounted" || echo "unable to UN-mount TsHOME"
fi
echo " "
if grep "direction" /etc/mtab &>/dev/null; then
grep "direction" /etc/mtab | awk '{print "direction is NOT mounted -> going on.." $2}'
else
sudo umount /home/Samba_share/direction && echo "direction is now UN mounted" || echo "unable to UN-mount direction pat"
fi
echo " "
if grep "Area" /etc/mtab &>/dev/null; then
grep "Area" /etc/mtab | awk '{print "Area is NOT mounted - Finished" $2}'
else
sudo umount /home/Samba_share/Area && echo "Area is now UN mounted" || echo "unable to UN-mount Area"
fi
echo " "
echo "going shutdown"
echo " "
sleep 5
I've try but it seems to ignore the IF statement... this is the output when ALL share are UNmounted:
$ sh /etc/rc.local.shutdown
This is a custom script for UN-mount citrix share
|check mount state: if mount then un-mount!|
+-------------------------------------------------------+
umount: /home/Samba_share/TsHOME: not mounted
unable to UN-mount TsHOME
umount: /home/Samba_share/direction: not mounted
unable to UN-mount direction
umount: /home/Samba_share/Area: not mounted
unable to UN-mount Area
going shutdown
Tomorrow I will test again when I'm at office.
Meanwhile can you check if I made a macroscopic mistakes?
Thank you again!

Ways to run a shell script that starts a python script
I have a shell script that is used to launch a python (2.5.1 installed via Fink) script (IDLE). The shell script, the IDLE script, and the python binary are all in /sw/bin as usual. This all has to be done AFTER X11 has been launched. I have to make this easy for my students to use.
In each account's home .xinitrc file, I have the lines
source .profile
vpython2.5 *
and this works, but it calls the vpython2.5 script every time X11 is launched. I've tried adding the vpython2.5 command to the X11 Applications menu, but this works ONLY if I add /sw/bin to the script name. Apparently the menu doesn't "know" about the current PATH setting. The keyboard shortcut I put in the menu neither shows up nor works either. So much for that option.
Now I've discovered Platypus and it looked promising, but I'm obiously not using it correctly and from the documentation, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
So here's the ultimate question. Is there a way to use Platypus to encapsulate the vpython2.5 script, preferably also starting up X11, so students will only have to click on the new app's icon? This is how OpenOffice.org starts up. It seemed simple enough to do in Platypus, but I never saw the IDLE window open up.I added a shortcut key "j" for the "xman" app in X11, and it seems to work fine. Did you press the command key with the shortcut key? Are you sure the shortcut key you selected does not overlap with others in the menubar?
There should be no problems creating an application with Platypus using a shell script. In my experience, you have to source all necessary files, assuming that the shell script does not recognize your terminal settings. You can also launch X11.app in the shell script with the following command:
command open -a X11
It is a good idea to pause the shell script until X11 finishes launching. To do this, you need a command like,
command sleep 5
Otherwise, if you try to start X11-dependent apps in the shell script while X11 is launching, it will fail. There may be better ways to do this.
Hope this helps. -
Starting and stopping an SQL query from within a Shell script
DB version:10gR2
OS Version:AIX
We have a C++ application called WpnCreate.cpp, which is causing some locking problems.
So, we have decided to capture(using SPOOL) the locking info(session info, blocking program,..etc) using an SQL query.
WpnCreate.cpp program is initiated by a shell script. So we need this SQL query(.sql) to start firing just before WpnCreate.cpp is called and when WpnCreate.cpp has finished executing, we need the SQL query execution to stop.
But how do i stop the sql query execution? Should i capture the session id and serial# of this session and use kill -9 at the end of the shell script?
Flow of the Shell script should be like this
Step1. Start firing the SQL query which captures the locking info and SPOOL them to a file
Step2. Execute WpnCreate.cpp program
Step3. Stop the firing of SQL query once WpnCreate.cpp has finished executing ( i don't know how)How will i go about achieving this?How can you run your step 2 untill & unless your step 1 gets over. You can run in background but then it will not capture the correct information.
I think you need to run your step 1 after step 2 , then only you will be able to capture the information.
You can run your C++ program in background and can wait for some time using sleep command and then run the query to check the locking information. -

Please don't overwhelm us with so many details!
Just off the top of my head ... as a general approach ... something like
nohup proca
nohup procb
nohup procc
while (some condition checking that all three procs are still running ... maybe a ps -ef |grep )
do
sleep 2
done
procd
But, we'd really need to know what it is you are really trying to accomplish, instead of your pre-conceived solution. -

and then recompiled the host procedure
executed the host procedure as per ur suggestion as follows (with out put)

bt, bt, bt, it still did not do any operations defined in the "ecs_script.sh"
in fact the script did nt executed.......

My first foray into shell scripting: tomcatctl
I've written a tomcatctl script (a script for controlling Tomcat, loosely based on all those other somethingctl scripts for controlling things, like apachectl).
It does start, stop, restart, status and version. It seems to work okay on my MacBook Pro, however, on my old, creaky G4 server, there seems to be a problem with restart. Apparently it tries to restart Tomcat before it has completely quit, leaving Tomcat in a weird, undead, zombielike state where it appears to be running, writing zero k log files, and not responding to requests, and it stays this way until I reboot the machine.
If anyone out there is brave enough to try it out, I'd like to get some feedback, especially from people with different configurations and people with a little shell scripting experience.
I'm sure I've made every conceivable noob scripting mistake, and I can't assume any responsibility for any damage it might cause, although I didn't manage to destroy anything while I was writing it, and it even worked fairly well on a 7 1/2 year old machine, except for the issue noted above.
Download: http://idisk.mac.com/dlivesay-Public/tomcatctl.zip
Unzip and put it in your command path. Please read it first and understand before you run. There are some lines at the top that have to be commented out or removed before it will run. You will probably also need to configure at least the "$CATALINA_HOME" environment variable before it will work.
Please, please, pleeeease don't use this on a production server until it has been throughly tested on a similarly-configured machine!Joshua S wrote:
What if you put in sleep between the stop and start (for restarting) so tomcat has time to shut down gracefully?
That is not a very elegant solution. There is no way to know how long to wait. There should be some mechanism to determine when tomcat has successully shut down.
Or, it could be a problem with the way you are starting tomcat. Follow the instructions in this thread to track it down. -

hi frnds
i need a help,i want to use a shell script to shutdown the database if the database is not shutdown properly using shutdown immediate.If shutdown immediate hangs it should check whther the database is up then call another script contains shutdown abort and startup and shutdown.
The problem is it is not go to the next line when the shutdown immediate hangs.I am giving my script how can i fix this
with regards
ramya
ORACLE_SID=CDRD; export ORACLE_SID
ALERT=/tmp/dbalert
dbstop.sh
sleep 300
ps -ef | grep ora_smon_$ORACLE_SID >$ALERT
if test -s $ALERT
then
dbabort.sh
sun7start.sh
sun7stop.sh
echo "Database Down"
else
echo "Database DOwn"
fiI suppose that when you say "shutdown immediate hangs" you mean that it hangs indefinitely. Shutdown immediate could take a long time to complete for some reason (e.g. SMON has to clean up extents which are no longer needed and mark them as freed).
I don't know a way to exit from an (indefinitely) hanging process, unless you kill it from another session.
Maybe shutdown abort is not the most advisable way to go normally, but sometimes you can't avoid it, and personally I've never had problem with it (maybe I'm lucky :-)). -
Executing Shell Scripts through PL-SQL
Hi All,
I am trying to execute a shell script from PL-SQL but I am not getting it right .
the code i used is as follows
----JAVA CLASS ---
CREATE OR REPLACE AND COMPILE JAVA SOURCE NAMED "Host" AS
import java.io.*;

--- THE SHELL SCRIPT IS -----
#!/bin/sh
# This script removes the carriage returns from the Files having .DAT1 extensions in the /test/ Directory

# e.g. file 'test.DAT1' is onverted to 'test.DAT'
# LOOP on /test/ DIRECTORY FOR SEARCHING FILES HAVING EXTENSION *.DAT1

do

# SEND THE CONTAINTS OF SELECTED FILE IN LOOP AS A CONTINUOUS STREAM TO NEW FILE NAME USING 'gawk' COMMAND
gawk 'BEGIN { ORS = "''" } { print $0 }' $file_name >> $new_file_name
# ABOVE LINE WILL CREATE A NEW FILE WITH SAME PRIMARY NAME BUT .DAT AS SECONDARY NAME(EXTENSION)
# REMOVE THE PRIOR FILE(s) AFTER SUCCESSFUL CALL TO 'gawk'
# $? returns 0 if the call to gawk command is succesfull

SQL>CALL DBMS_JAVA.SET_OUTPUT(1000000);
SQL>SET SERVEROUTPUT ON SIZE 1000000
SQL>exec host('/root/sh ecs_script.sh'); -----------------------------------------------1
now, the statement 1 is the path of the Shell Script ecs_script.sh
which uses gawk command and does some operations on some file..
but when i give the call in Statement 1 its giving error like
/bin/sh is not a directory
so i am not getting wHat should I do so that my script "ecs_script.sh" gets executed..
Please Help.The Java proc says:
> finalCommand[0] = "/bin/sh";
finalCommand[1] = "-c";
finalCommand[2] = command;
You call it as follows:
SQL>exec host('/root/sh ecs_script.sh');
The final command will be:
/bin/sh -c /root/sh ecs_script.sh
Is this what you intended?
