Sherlock - shame about eBay...

Whilst delighted I switched from a PC (after 8 years) to a Mac-Mini (OS 10.4.7)
somewhat disappointed to find that searching eBAY via Sherlock, I'm restricted to the USA. [And that' s the only critcism I can think of ]
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi Holmbridge,
Glad your enjoying the Mac experience & that Sherlock's shortcomings is your only gripe.
I've never used Sherlock but, from what I can gather from these forums, it is largely defunct and now superseded by widgets. You'll find over time that there is less and less support for Sherlock and I wouldn't be surprised if it disappears altogether in Leopard, especially considering the widget creating tool that Steve Jobs announced at the WWDC.
…and wouldn't you know it there just happens to be an eBay widget! Again I haven't used it, (I hardly ever use Dashboard actually), but I would think that it is configurable to eBay.co.uk. You could, of course, just keep one or more Safari tabs open to whatever eBay auctions you are watching.
Have fun!
Adrian

  • Postal Outlet Comments About eBay

This is not a complaint ... simply a few notes about a conversation I had with the Postal Outlet manager this morning. I dropped off a couple of packages and, because it was quiet in the store, I asked him if he had received any comments from the regular eBay sellers who use that outlet.  He said that, in the last few months, the number of parcels brought in has dropped dramatically.  He said it wasn't unusual, after a weekend, to have as many as 100 to 150 parcels (from eBay sellers) in the Monday pick-up.  He says that now, on most Mondays, there might 25 to 30.  And sellers who used to bring in 10 to 20 a day... he says they only come in the store about twice a week now with a few packages.  And the refrain is the same -- no sales. I asked him if he and his friends ever shop on eBay (he's about 25 or so).  He said that he had a few times in the past but, the last couple of years, he never even thinks about that site.  Depending what he's shopping for, he uses Amazon, Staples, Best Buy, Costco or manufacturer's websites because they all offer free, fast and tracked shipping.  He went on to say that he's amazed that eBay is even "a thing" anymore, which made me laugh. Anyway, his comments didn't surprise me ... it just confirmed what I had been thinking.  I was little surprised, however, by the overall decrease in number of packages. So, a few thoughts from a millennial (him, not me)

Now, even if sales by Canadian sellers had remained even over the last few years (while the rest of the world is growing), the local postal station may have noticed a decline in the number of parcels for which they sold postage for eBay's business.   There are many factors including the fact that more Canadian sellers purchase their postage online to get discounts and do not need to go to the PO to buy it.  Others use forwarding services shipping through USPS and - based on posts on these boards - these businesses seem to be growing quickly.  Again these are parcels not seen by the local post office.  Also, a large percentage of sales by Canadians are in the lettermail/letterpost variety (including light packet).  These shipments do not require bringing anything to the local post office.  Finally another factor is that a growing number of Canadian sellers use discount postage to send their letters/parcels.  That is one way to fight the constantly increasing rates by Canada Post. You're absolutely right about the various ways sellers purchase their postage.  I purchase all my labels online and have sufficient stamps on hand to affix to lettermail.  BUT I still go into the drugstore where the postal outlet is located to drop them off.  Sometimes it's because I want the clerk to scan the expedited labels; sometimes I need stamps or usually I just need to purchase something in the drugstore.  The parcels I was referring to (which the manager said had decreased) have also physically been dropped off by other sellers in the neighbourhood.  So the manager (who also works behind the counter for full shifts) has first-hand knowledge of the number of parcels being dropped off.  I live in a highly populated area -- lots of apartment blocks -- and the mailbox in the strip mall where the postal outlet is located is usually full.  It's difficult to throw in a dozen or more letters, let alone parcels.  So we've all gotten in the habit of dropping them off personally.  And it's a friendly place to meet and visit. Why your local manager thinks his business has dropped that much is a mystery to me. Well, he really doesn't think that, he knows for certain how many parcels used to go through his outlet.

  • Can you do something about ebay?

i dont get it. i just chatted with someone at customer support at ebay
my problem is that i cannot modify the text using my mac. (i can do it using internet explorer) their answer was "you have to understand safari do have some issues" and i dont believe him i think safari is a great browser.
anyways i just want to know if any one knows if there is a way i can modify or design the text at this page using my mac or i just have to switch back to i.e.

Unless you can convince eBay techs that Safari is just as good as Internet Explorer, they will optimize the site for Windows and IE.

  • 3G iphone outstanding spec! Shame about the plastic back cover!

WOW I am so totally blow away by the spec of the new 3G iphone!
I have only one criticism why when Apple put so much care into the styling of the new Macbook Air & the first gen iphone/ipod touch etc with sleek brushed metal finish to the case have they opted for a plastic back cover on the new 3G iphone?
I hope if they are giving us the option of a black or white back cover that they have a rethink and also give us the option of a metal back cover too!!! Just a thought...
    Message was edited by: NRG1970

There is a simple reason that it has a plastic case.
In side the new phone there are 10 radio transmitters / receivers that all need access to the outside world via a radio transparent material. The radios are the multiple phone standards for world coverage, GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi. A metal case would not allow all these signals to pass through.

  • Where Can I Learn About Connecting an External Drive to My Airport Extreme?

I'm having trouble find information on this. I want to know the pros and cons of connecting my LaCie drive to the FireWire port of my base station so that different computers in the house have direct access to it. I'd like to know whether there will be a big change in the data transfer rate, any security issues, and whether permissions will be assigned automatically by the computer creating new folders on the drive. Also, I'd like to know whether Time Machine works well this way.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

You're right about the USB. Must have been imagining things. Darn those meds. Thanks for the speed comparison too; I think I'll experiment a bit. Shame about Time Machine though. I thought I had read a post elsewhere on the discussion board saying that Time Machine recognized an external drive connected to a router. It may not have been an AEBS, and perhaps recognizing it doesn't mean Time Machine will back up to it.
    Thanks again for your reply.

  • Logic boards for sale on ebay, anybody tried them?

So Apple does not want to fix our faulty macbook pros (which don't qualify for the nvidia timed bomb), and I'm not going to pay thousands just to get that peace of junk work again and sell it for half that price!
I, however, did some search on ebay and found so many logic boards that could replace my faulty one, the sellers claim it's all new and are authentic, but how come they got it in the first place!?! anyone had a successful experience with one of those sellers?
Otherwise should I send my Pro to the states to get the logic board replaced for free since the local apple retailer says it's not included... bla bla... so does it work that way? please help

Boomer, thanks for your reply. The reason why I am asking is that I read somebody's story on this forum that lives in chile or colombia or something, and his local apple retailer told him they can't replace the board in which nvidia's issue is not involved... then he called apple of the US and complained, then they told him they'd fix it for free if he lived in the states or at least send them the laptop... which he couldn't do. So I thought that would work for me, hopefully?

  • Question about error code

I have been having problems when I try to open applications such as IPhotos or Photoshop. They keep on quitting. I did the Hardware Test and it showed error code 2MEM/5/4:DIMM1/J31. Does anyone know what it means and what I should do? I do not have a warranty anymore and now I wondered if I am gonna have to get the coverage plan (my budget is tight right now). Thank you for any help you can give me.

Either the module has failed or has come loose. At this time I'd open up your computer and make sure it's still locked in place. Afterwards, no need to run the hardware test, just check with System Profiler to see if you were able to nudge it back into position.
Once in a while RAM modules do fail, but not very often.
    Edit-
Since you apparently did not purchase this from Apple, it probably is still under lifetime warranty by the seller, so look up your original order number on the invoice and fill out an RMA request on the website of your supplier, or of the manufacturer (brand) itself. If they don't have a Support section or warranty or RMA section, you'll have to email them.
Put off thinking about eBay until you find out if it will be replaced under warranty.
[If you had an extra 1GB of memory, that is not going to be a bargain on eBay, as many are just now upgrading and trying to buy that size, but if you had an extra 512MB, then that is what can be found for a fraction of the price you'd have to pay for new anywhere else. If you're really lucky you can find someone with a relatively new iBook or PowerBook who might be looking to sell what hardly had any use. Caution in shipping is required, as the biggest cause of RAM failure is mishandling of the module between manufacture and packaging.]

  • Frightened about X-fi 16Gb mp3 player softw

Hi! I have just bougth a X-fi 65Gb mp3 player and I didn?t know anything about its software untill yesterday that I read about it in this forum... Is it really that bad?As far as I understood reading your messages, the software is very similar to the i-pod one, isn't it'sI don't know if you were talking about an old software, please tell me how it is. I haven't given the present to my boyfriend(the mp3 player) and if it is that bad probably I won't...Can anybody tell me if it is good or not?
    Thank you

Unfortunately for Creative, Centrale in its current form is pretty bad. The most recent download update is only slightly better than the copy that came with my X-Fi. On my XP Pro media computer, it still locks up way too much, particularly if I'm not careful on where I click on the left side of the program window. And no, it's still nothing like iTunes, although from what I hear lately with its own latest version 8 it's is no great program either. It's really a shame about Centrale, because the general design and how you're supposed to use if (if it worked right) isn't all that bad. The problems with program stability and the freezing however make it a HORRIBLE user experience, which unfortunately really drags down the X-Fi, IMHO.
The X-Fi isn't perfect and has its own issues, but most of those are easy to overlook because for the most part the X-Fi is a sweetheart to use (as long as you put blinders on when it comes to random play). But whenever I'm docked to the computer, Centrale really makes it hellish to want to keep using my X-Fi.

  • I can't see pictures when on EBAY. I can see them in Chrome and Explorer, but not Firefox

This just started happening in the past few days. I can't see EBAY pictures (there are some other sites as well where I now don't see pictures). I see the pictures fine using other browsers.

Do you have AdBlock Plus or any of the ad-blocking add-ons? If so, that may be what is causing the problem.
There's just something about eBay that makes these add-ons think the entire website is an advertisement and so they're just trying to do their job and block everything "ad-related".
If you disable your AdBlock Plus or whatever it is just for ebay, you should see it go back to normal.

  • Safari and eBay/Audible

Anyone else having trouble with eBay (Page not responding messages) and/or Audible (pages never finish loading)? I think the Audible problem started when they redesigned their site. (If it's working, don't mess with it??). I'm not sure about eBay, it seemed to show up with Safari 4, but reverting to 3.2.3 doesn't help. (I used Pacifist and replaced all the 4.0.2 files with the 3.2.3 files, not just the app.)
With eBay I have to be logged in; when I view an item it will start to display and then the page clears to a "Page not responding" message. If I hit the stop (X) button soon enough, I can save the page before it clears.
With Audible I have to sign in, then the home page just keeps loading, and loading, and loading. The "completed xxx of xxx items" just keeps chasing itself with the first number just behind the second as they both increment.
    (I've reset Safari.)

I was looking around in the Apple support area and I found a Safari troubleshooting tip suggesting that I create as new account and run Safari from there. Sounded like a good idea as it eliminates any customizations. And I can totally reset Safari in that account without loosing my forms and passwords.
Unfortunately I got the same results; non functioning Audible and eBay.

  • Ebay , mail and router

    hi
I finally managed to connect my router and its wireless capabilities.
Now I am facing new challenge.
I am using an actiontec701-GT with aol and my pb only.
By not using the firewall built in the router i manage to go almost on every site. I have setup wep 128 (just to avoid hackers) and have the latest firmware available for this model.
I have read a few topics on here about ebay issues.
I just cannot access the ebay page .co.uk. I have noticed that my save searches sent by mail, open the page, but I cannot log in, nor can i open first page using my bookmark or google link to access ebay pages.
I know ebay uses dll extentions on their pages. Could the 128 inscription stop me accessing ebay pages?
    Also
I can receive emails using Mail app, but cannot send any??
it doesn't make any difference weither i am using wireless or ethernet cable.
    grrr
    thanks for your help

  • Satellite X205-SLi1

I was working with my laptop this evening and all of a sudden my laptop just shut off. Now i have no form of power on my laptop. I have pulled the battery out, tried another outlet and nothing is working please help.
    Steve

Sorry that no one else has responded to this before now -- regrettably, I suspect that X205 has become a casualty of the terminal failure of one or both of its Nvidia GPUs and is now useful only for a parts machine (of which there are a large number on eBay, with very few X205s still in working condition offered by comparison).
However, if he wants to have an authorized service center check it out, then do a lookup of current providers at this link using the drop-down toggles or by putting in your ZIP code and distance preference (Dallas or Ft. Worth seems most likely for your locale):
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/gaspLocator.jsp?style=emea
In the past the service provider I've used in Austin (ARC) was really excellent, but is no longer on the list and seems from a brief scan of their website to have relocated the office and substantially reconfigured the business practice and objectives since the last time I needed their warranty repair services 6 years back.  Sorry to relay unhappy news, but good luck -- it's a shame about the GPU failure, but since Toshiba was NOT included in the class-action settlement approved last December (HP, Dell and Apple and only for select models by those manufacturers), all X205 owners are basically S.O.L. when that inevitably occurs.

  • Powerbook G3 series 8.6 to 9.2.2 upgrade

    Hi,
I just joined the discussions (today) so pardon my "novice" level - in advance.
    Background:
    =========
I have a Powerbook G3 series (bought in 1999) 333Mhz, 256Mb RAM and 4GB HD. It is running OS 8.6 (came with it).
I know that this is a "dinosaur" but remarkably it has "worked fine" (see further below).
I would like to keep it and "make it more useful" as I contemplate a newer MAC purchase.
So, I would like to upgrade from 8.6 to 9.2.2.
I checked in Apple's "Mac OS 8 and 9 compatibility with Macintosh
Computers" table and it shows that the G3 series can go up to 9.2.2
I considered OSX V10.4 but this G3 is not a "built-in Firewire" and also does not have sufficient RAM and HD for OSX (as I was able to surmise upon further research). Also it appears that even if earlier OS X versions were compatible they might run too slow on such an old machine.
    Specific Questions:
    ==============
I wanted to get educated on the "8.6 to 9.2.2" upgrade for any tips and warning so I searched the discussions topics re: such an upgrade and found very useful information from the various Q&As.
After absorbing all of the relevant discussions, I still have the following questions:
    1) It was suggested in one of the threads that "....a firmware update would be required before installing OS9..."
Would I need this for my G3 ? If so where would I obtain a copy ?
    2) It appears that to get to 9.2.2, I would have to do the following:
    a) do the firmware upgrade as per answer from 1) above.
    b) get a retail OS9 (white with gold 9) from one of the suggested sites
    and do the install
    c) download the 9 to 9.2.2 upgrade from one of the suggested sites
and do the 9 to 9.2.2 upgrade
I am not restating the suggested site names here.
Are the above steps a) to c) correct ?
    3) Is there any reason or "gotcha" to not upgrade from 8.6 to 9.2.2 ?
    4) Would it make sense to consider some earlier version of OS X vs 9.2.2 ?
Surprisingly and remarkably, my G3 has been working fine for the "most part" but I continue to run into snags when I want to upgrade Apps or when browsing certain sites or wanting to use later peripherals, e.g., flash disks.
For example when I switched to Gmail - it does not show all the features and suggests later browsers which all require 9.x or higher. Gmail does work for older browsers but with limited features.
Also, I am stuck with IE 5.1 (for Macs) and Netscape 6.x and can't use others, e.g., Mozilla.
I am hoping that with 9.2.2 (or some version of OS X) I will be able to bring this G3 to a much more usable level without much $$ expense.
Any help on my questions would be greatly appreciated.
I hope my question information is not overly long.
    Thank You.
Powerbook G3 series   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   333Mhz, 256M RAM. 4GB HD

    macd-sm,
There are 6 updates (7 if you have an iPod what can be used with OS9) that can be applied after OS9.2.2 update has been applied.
CarbonLib v1.6 - extremely useful for your system, read all about it and download it here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120047
AppleScript v1.8.3 - again, useful for your use of OS9.2.2, it's all here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120128
Authoring Support v1.1.9 - useful if you plan to burn CD on a supported replacement internal drive (that burns CD's) or a supported external drive, using iTunes or the Disc Burner in the Finder. It replaces Authoring Support v1.1.3 that was installed with OS9.2.2, so it's not going to break anything installing it. It's here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120083
QuickTime v6.0.3 - It's up to you if you want to upgrade to QuickTime v6, or stick with v5 (that is installed with OS9.2). I keep an OS9.2.2 system as a retro system, for once in a while to run older software. As such I don't need the latest QuickTime for web surfing, so I stuck with v5, but you may want to use v6. It's here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime603formac.html
Mac OS Runtime for Java 2.2.6: Pretty much essential if you're going to be using the web: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209
iTunes v2.0.4: This is the latest version of iTunes for OS9. It was a bit of pig to find this download page, so download it and keep it, even if you decide not to install it straight away: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120073
I can only add to a possible source of OS9.2.1 retail CD's, eBay. Make sure you get a good clear picture of the OS9 install CD, along with any other software they may be selling with it. All the usual "caveat emptor" warnings about eBay apply. I've never bought this CD from eBay - ironically I gave mine away with the PowerBook.
Maybe just another little note about the upgrade. You may find that some of your older apps, utils and games will cease to work under OS9. Maybe 90% of what I used, worked no problem. Then 90% of the rest worked after downloading a patch or two. I can only think of one or two very old games that stopped in OS9. If you have any "must-have" apps that you need to work in OS9, post details of them here and we'll do our best to let you know.

  • Sync between iPhone and iPad failed spectacularly

    The equipment:
    iPad Mini Retina
    iPhone 5S
    The OS: 8.1.3 (on both)
    The Objective:
So my wife has an iPad and an iPhone. She's been using Podcasts on the iPhone for quite some time, and hasn't had a problem with it for quite a while now - it seems most of the bugs have been hammered out. Shame about losing the reel to reel.   She, quite reasonably, wanted to sync Podcasts across her devices, the iPad is relatively new and she's naturally been using it more and more. The iPad had no subscriptions yet, the iPhone had many, with many episodes not yet listened to. So we turned on "Sync Podcasts" - first on the iPhone, then the iPad.
    The Fail:
My wife opened the Podcasts app on the iPad (just a moment after enabling syncing) - huh, only two of her subscriptions showed up. She rolled her eyes at me because, rather expectedly, it didn't Just Work. So I opened up the podcasts app on her phone - and it immediately crashed. Huh. I opened it again. Two subscriptions - everything else, GONE.
    The Result:
    She was displeased.
She just finished resubscribing and trying to figure out what episodes she still had marked as new. We left "sync" turned on. Is it safe? Has anyone seen this? Is syncing going to be a headache? It's not synced with iTunes - she never uses it, she is pretty much post PC, except she uses her MacBook Air and handoff is a life saver, but whatever.
We also have two Apple TV's (with the Podcasts app) - I'm afraid to even go near the icon. If this is a harbinger of Photos, color me terrified.

    Thank for replying.
I tried to find the Accounts as you said but do not see the Accounts button in either the Notes app itself, or in the Setttings > Notes.
I've googled about but not found a solution.
Seems like Accounts is only available when you are syncing through USB to itunes.
I wasn't synicng to itunes and so assumed they would be stored somewhere locally on the ipad, think it is this that has been overwritten when added icloud to the device.

  • The N97, Ovi, and some of my hatred.

This is what's pi$$es me most off at the moment. There's more, but I can't be arsed to mentally whip myself by reminding myself about it. But this should cover my main points of bloodraging fury.
The camera. Why is the production N97 equipped with a camera that would embarrass a prototype?
It drowns the entire left side in led light when the so called flash is used?
While I'm at it, why is there not a proper flash? If Sony bloody Ericsson can do it, so can Nokia.
And then there's the protective cover that isn't protective, but is in fact the freaking opposite of protective.
Why does my lens have scratches because of the cover? And it isn't just me either.
Try googling "n97 scratched camera" and see what results you get.
There are someone in Nokia who should go back to working in a boot factory.
There were no touch pen in the box the N97 came with. Which is just as good, because there's no place in the phone to store it. I tried to use it with a pen from a Nokia 5800, and surprise, surprise, it was a huge improvement. So therefore it could not be a part of the N97 package. If it's any good, the N97 couldn't have it. Just like a better placement of the camera leds such as on the N97 mini, not for the big N97.
Ovi suite. The old PC Suite might've been old, but newer isn't always better. There's several things about Ovi suite I that makes me want go to Finland only to slap Nokia programmers across the face with rancid salmons.
For instance, why, oh fcuking why, is there no bleeding obvious way of moving movies from the N97 to my computer like there was on PC Suite. It had a film strip icon, hooray!  The Ovi suite only want to synchronize all the images I have in "My Pictures" folder, even AFTER I have selected a different folder to synch with?
I do abso-fcuking-lutely not want to have all the **bleep** from My Pictures on my mobile phone.
I have even MOOOOVED all the images from the old My Pictures, to a different folder just because Ovi didn't want tolet go of the idea of putting all my old My Pictures images on the N97. And yeeeeeeeezzz.... I have restarted Ovi, but no good.
Restarted my computer, yup, still NFG.
Another thing that makes me truly furious. Playing music on the piece of $hit that I was stupid enough to buy without testing first (because all the previous Nokias I had were excellent mobiles at the times they were new).
I were under the obviously wrong impression that all I have to do to put some music to my retarded mobile was to just adding it by using Ovi. Surely I could play whatever tune I wanted once they were on my mobil, just like on the N95?
Could I heck. The tunes are undoubtedly on the mobile, the Ovi on a different computer sees them on the mobile, but I cannot access them from the mobile. As far as the crabby user interface on the N97 is concerned, there's just the sound files I made with the mobile itself on on there. Nothing else at all in the Music app.
Ovi doesn't do ANYTHING better for me than the old PC Suite did. The things that are allegedly improved by jamming Ovi in my virtual throat are not something I want anyway. Ovi looks gayer though, presumably to suck up to the Apple-drones.
Who by the way got a real nice piece of hardware in the iPhone. Just a shame about having to deal with Satans iTunes by going that route.
On the positive note, Maps is the saving grace of Nokia for me. Otherwise I'd enjoy throwing the N97 at a brick wall, or jumping on it, and urinate all over the remains. I hate this mobile with a passion, so I might go back to the N95 until the next flagship Nokia. And if it isn't at least as good as the competitors, I've bought my last Nokia after many models of Nokias. The user interface isn't a reason to stay with Nokia anymore, so why bother?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The biggest n97 alternative IMO is the Samsung OmniaPRO B7610 It runs on WinMo, but I like WinMo, so....
Anyway, I understand your gripe. The n97 was a bad unit. However regarding the new Nokia that would make you smile, I am not sure if this would do the trick but later this year Symbian^2 and Maemo 6 will be released
